Reluctant Reader Wednesday: Cat on the Hero’s Lap by Kousuke Iijima and Shiori 

Red is a level 3 hero, who goes on quests with his companions Grace (a level 12 mage) and Aina (a level 10 martial artist). Red is very brave when it comes to fighting monsters like goblins and even dragons. But recently, he’s become the victim of a creature that’s proving to be even more dangerous: a cat who keeps keeps coming over to sleep on Red’s lap. 

Red needs to level up if he’s ever going to help his party with their ultimate mission: to defeat the demon king. But every time this mysterious cat appears, it heads straight for Red’s lap. While the cat is sleeping on his lap, Red can’t fight at all, he can’t level up, and his party is defeated again and again.

Is this cat his friend or his enemy? And does Red have any future as a hero, if he can’t even manage to get around a single cat?

KR Wizard HCs:

Nitoh's Mayonnaise obsession just manifested recently.

Because of Kimaira, Nitoh has lost his sense of taste, and the only thing left was his mouth's sense of touch and he can imagine the mayonnaise's flavor if he puts it in his food.

Yamamoto never transformed again after Nitoh retook his mantle as Kamen Rider Beast.

He also knew that he would need the driver and rings sooner or later.

With the support of his wife, he continues to train with Haruto and sometimes Nitoh and Mayu so that he won't get rusty.

And there won't be a repeat of what happened with the artificial Phantoms.

Shunpei now makes the magic rings. Mayu is the one giving him the magic stones that he would fashion into rings. So far he has outfitted the three KR Mages of the rings he has created.

With varying levels of success.

[Really the worst of it was the Dress Up ring forcing them into a set of clothes instead of the clothes they imagined wearing]

[The less said about the type of clothes they're forced to wear as, the better]

Speaking of rings, Yamamoto has gotten more use with his magic by caring for his child than in battle, despite the mages and wizard's magic being so battle oriented.

Because he's used to making creative decisions for his magic and take care of his children, he's gotten more strategic and creative use of magic in battle.

He once used the earth rings to make a mini patch of sand in his backyard for his child to play with.

He has even used the wind rings to safely carry his child to the ground after falling from a high place.

These creative uses are then relayed to mayu for her to practice with and use in battle.

When a big battle comes around, and Mayu's the only one fighting, he helps everyone by making a strategy.

Among the mages, only Yuzuru has access to Nitoh's animal rings.

and all the animal rings he has are for three things, defend, attack, and escape.

Yuzuru and Nitoh rotate the rings that they would use between them.

the hope ring inside of Haruto has unknown power.

One time when things really got dire, the hope ring exited Haruto's body and gave Shunpei and Rinko access to their powers in another world, as kamen rider orange mage.

This gave both of them the magic rings their other world counterparts have.

Iijima; I was attacked by one of the current Kamen Riders

Iijima: Spouting that Kamen Riders should die and whatnot.

Iijima: No, I'm relatively fine.

Iijima: Are you sure? Yamamoto-san's house is near, I can just give him a visit.

Iijima: Kousuke-niichan is out of the country something about a dig site and he was needed.

Iijima: He's right here, I froze him, Do I just leave him here?

Iijima: Okay, got it.

Iijima: Hello, Sakurai-san, I'm Yuzuru Iijima, Kamen Rider Mage.

Iijima: A Rider ally gave me your number in case something happens.

Iijima: You could say... one of your allies tried to attack me?

Iijima: Oh no, I'm fine, I just froze him.

iijima: Oh yeah, I was also Kamen Rider Blue Mage, I don't exactly transform all that often nowadays.

Iijima: Yeah, I was a kid when I became a Rider.

Iijima: Much younger than Takeru-niichan and Sougo-kun when they got their Rider powers.

Iijima: I believe I was 14 at the time.

Iijima: You'll get him?

Iijima: What if he attacks you instead?

Iijima: You'll have someone with you? okay?

Ijjima: Should I wait for you, Sakurai-san?

Iijima: I can leave him here?

Iijima: Okay.

CHAIN NOW!

More chains, this time they were made of metal, sprouted from the ground and wrapped around the frozen form of Michinaga.

Iijima: They told me I can leave, so might as well.

This is precisely why Riders do not like involving kids (especially the modern ones) in their affairs... nutjobs like Azuma could find them and go after them just for being associated with Riders. They're fortunate that Yuzuru can defend himself and that Azuma hasn't sunk to that level... yet.

At this point I honestly cannot muster any sympathy for Azuma. I'm not expecting him to let go of his grudge when he's clung onto it like Linus with his security blanket for half a season.

You want to talk about Wizard, Tale??? Even the most obscure of characters? Well then, how about How did Yuzuru (Kamen Rider Blue Mage) feel when even though he was there to save his Kosuke-niichan, Nitou still ended up using the Chimera driver and became beast? (Wizard vs Gaim movie)

Yuzuru is devastated. He's shaking and angry sorts of tears are welling in his eyes. He's demanding from Nitoh, "Why?" and he knows better not to shout but he is raising his voice. His breathing is uneven but Nitoh only pats his head, gentle and kind as ever. "Kousuke-niichan...what if you...what if..." he can't bring himself to say anything further because it's Chimera's claws tearing out his heart from the inside - scratching it up and shreds of the organ are left.

"I'l be okay, Yuzuru." Nitoh assures him with a smile, confident rays of the sun soaking up the boy's vision.

Gods above, Yuzuru wants to believe tat so badly.

But really, Yuzuru is calling up Kouta the most to ask about giving more Helheim fruits to ensure Nitoh will be okay.

Nitoh: Hello, Yuzuru!

Yuzuru: Kousuke-san! Can you please get this robot off of me.

Nitoh: Is Baymax following you?

Yuzuru: Yes! And I need to find that artificial phantom that I bumped into.

Nitoh: Yuzuru, let Baymax treat you.

Nitoh: He will follow you everywhere if you won't

Nitoh: It's the only reason he's in this universe because Kadoya did not let this guy treat him.

Nitoh: Baymax followed him.

Nitoh: But he lost track of Decade, so here he is.

Welp, among the secondary riders, Nitoh is one of the sanest (if we don't count his obsession with Mayonnaise)... because in Ep40 the female mage suggests that Yuzuru should become a Mage and Nitoh immediately protests...

Huh. I guess he doesn't have mayo for brains XD

Seriously though, good for him. As I understand it, Haruto and three other magicians were required to start the Sabbath, and Yuzuru became a candidate as he was able to resist giving into his despair. While I don't think hiding him would've worked (Fueki would likely have found him anyway, since he kept tabs on the people being turned into Gates), putting him on the front lines is a whole other matter.

If Riders like Kousuke Nitoh and Haruto Soma were incensed upon finding out that a 12-year-old (assumed age, he was in middle school after all), Yuzuru Iijima, became Kamen Rider Mage, and was mind-controlled at that, I don't think any of the good riders will take kindly to that happening to anyone else.

Assuming that Yuzuru was indeed twelve when he first appeared (it was after the New Year afaik) he'd be younger than Sougo when the history nerd became Zi-O.

Would Sougo use this to his advantage and deflect the mothering of all the Riders towards Yuzuru? Takeru wasn't successful on that front when he tries deflecting the mothering to Sougo, was he?

Of course not. Having one more baby Rider doesn't mean the other babies get babied less. It just means there are more baby Riders to baby

Haruto: The kid did not sign up to be a Rider.

Haruto: Nitoh and I trying to protect the kid.

Haruto: Even if he’s trying to step up to Nitoh’s duties when he was unable to access his magic.

Emu: Let me get this straight, he did not choose to become Kamen Rider mage?

Emu: He did not choose to become a Rider.

Emu: Not even a higher power or a sentient transformation trinket chose him.

Haruto: Correct on all accounts.

Emu: You still should have made all of us aware of him.

Emu: So we’re not blindsided that some kid suddenly appeared in your place.

Haruto: We had hoped that it won’t come to that.

Haruto: and be there whenever he transforms.

Emu: Plans rarely work in our favor.

Emu: You know that, Souma.

Haruto: So I should bring him here for you to baby him?

Emu: You know I only do that out of concern.

Emu: Considering who the active Rider before me was.

Kadoya: We should probably not tell Tokiwa about this.

Kadoya: He’d be so disappointed that he’s still the baby Rider among the main Riders.

Somewhere… Sougo: Onore Dikeido!

Hmmm... I don't think Haruto would ever tell anyone, let alone the worrywart mother hen of the Riders, that a 14 year old was basically coerced into becoming a Kamen Rider.

As I mentioned, I think it would be far more likely that he retired/gave up being Mage instead of keeping up with his training. Turned in the Driver and the ring, all of it, and just lived the rest of his life as a normal person. And I think Haruto and Kousuke would've respected his decision enough not to disclose his secret even when pressed by fellow Riders.

It's not entirely unheard of- iirc, Hibiki had a young man training under him as an apprentice to eventually succeed him, but he ended up not pursuing that path. While Hibiki ended up reconnecting with him, he didn't insist on his former trainee resuming the apprenticeship. And I don't think Hibiki would ever tell anyone about him either.
