Fun fact, the reason I know of Firewatch is because of @tea-brigade's Snowbaz Firewatch AU and it's been years since I read it so I was like "cool, I don't remember how that fic ends so I can play this game without getting spoiled and afterwards I can reread the fic :D" but I did vividly remember Simon being pushed off a cliff.
Long story short, during the entire game... every time Henry climbed down the rope, I expected someone to cut it off and let him fall down a cliff. Or have someone push him off a cliff when he walked close to a cliff. AT EVERY CLIFF I WAS LIKE "HENRY, NO."
Henry did not get pushed off a cliff!

I gave Korinne a much needed redesign!
I'll probably be going through all of the Mythirian guard and giving them new outfits eventually. Rather pleased with how this turned out.
For those curious, she's an echidna/pangolin/lizard hybrid of sorts.

Erica Goes to a Bar
Outside the bar, people mingled in clusters, bodies pressed against bodies pressed against walls. Erica didn’t spare any of them a glance. They certainly didn’t spare one for her. None of them were the body she was looking for, anyway. It wasn’t worth her time to linger. Warmth spilled out the newly opened door into the cold night, like a trapped beast pressing against its constraints. Erica gagged at the stench of it, sweat and booze and sex mingling in a cocktail she had never found appealing. She choked on the heat of too many bodies in a packed space, swallowed down the bile rising in her throat, and forced her way through the doorway. Her heels stuck to the floor. She was already sweating. Skin brushed against skin and she recoiled away from it, crashing into more skin stretched across too sharp bone. Her head spun. From the heat? The physical contact? Or was there something in the air, one of the many psychedelics Festus loved to play with? She wasn’t in the mood to be toyed with. When she finally reached the back wall, she sagged against the bar. The stone was cool against her forehead, a balm against her burning skin, her burning blood. She hated this place. The Hortus Hedera, the Ivy Garden, filled with perfectly pruned flowers. Only the best were allowed to bloom, and only the most toxic flourished. “Why don’t you join the Garden?” Erica had asked Korinne once. “It would get you out of this palace. Maybe you could flee the island altogether. I’m sure they have the connections.” Korinne had rolled her eyes. “They offered,” she mouthed. “I turned them down.” “Why?” She had hesitated for a moment, panic flashing in her eyes. One hand drifted to the charms in her hair, and Erica understood. Myra. “Every drop of blood I’ve spilled is a prayer,” Korinne finally explained after an extended silence. “Money desecrates the ritual.” Erica could understand that, even if she didn’t subscribe to the same belief—her father didn’t consider his bloodshed to be anything more than what it was—but it made her job much harder without an inside connection. If anything, Korinne was a reason for them not to help her. Why would they actively help the competition?

So, the very first product to bear the Forgotten Realms logo was Douglas Niles’ novel Darkwalker on Moonshae (1987), but that book was not conceived as about the Forgotten Realms at all. Instead it reflected with Niles’ own world or one under development at TSR’s UK division (or some combination of the two); the half-finished novel was stranded when TSR UK was shuttered.
Meanwhile, Greenwood’s Moonshae Isles was this remote, rather sleepy archipelago (it sounds sort of like a combination of Harn and Earthsea, which I must say is rather appealing). It was deemed too large and too empty for the public-facing campaign setting, so it was removed and replaced with Nile’s Celtic-themed realm. I don’t know if it is amusing or aggravating or what, but Greenwood always avoided bringing in obvious real-world cultures into his home Realms, so it is fairly ironic that the first major TSR addition was the plopping of a British-shaped island onto the map.
The book is almost entirely lore. History, geography, sociology, important people, groups, factions and so on. Very little in terms of mechanics. I honestly can’t quite say why I feel like this one is more usable as a game sourcebook than FR1, but I feel like it is, even with less attribute block and zero explicit adventure hooks.
Couple other interesting things. First, this is the second generic world that Niles created that wound up bolted onto the Realms. The first was the Bloodstone Lands. And, he also bolted someone else onto the Moonshaes — Aaron Allston’s Korinn Archipelago is here, making N4: Treasure Hunt a retroactive Forgotten Realms adventure.
Tim Hildebrandt cover art, which I find somewhat surprising. I think this is one of maybe three contributions to the visual history of D&D. It’s quite tranquil. Interiors by the great George Barr. I am really unused to this idea of having really good illustrations in a FR sourcebook. That is definitely something that dropped off in the ’90s.

ᒥ🎲ᒧ— "Its not often we get new faces in Korinn, 'specially pretty ones like yours, mate." Edward smirks, reaching for his drink as he flirts with this Pirate. Unfortunately, as he goes to grab his drink he mistakenly knocks it over. "Fuck!" He groans, having spilled the mead all into his lap.
The older pirate had got his attention and he stopped beside the table briefly to give him a once over with eyes as blue as the sea. Being so attractive he made the poor man spills his drink. Killian snickered at the clumsiness. "I can tell. You're the fifth one to try and I haven't even made it to a table yet." Killian with a shake of his head. He knew he was very good looking, but either the pirates here were particularly horny or the pickings were slim with attractive people to screw around with.
"That drink may be on you but I'll cover your next one, mate." Killian said sweetly with a wink and moved on towards the back. His crew cleared a table for him, making the people sitting there get up without causing a scene and claimed the table. The young captain and two others sat down, the first mate and quartermaster. One taking out cards to start dealing with the rest of the crew standing around the table making sure no one bothered their captain while others went to the bar to order everyone's drinks. Which included a replacement mead for Ed that was brought over to him.
It didn't seem like the new pirate was interested in socializing much, having come to drink and hang out with his own crew. Though his gaze wandered back to Edward as if considering giving the man a chance. But his attention was drawn to his own drink arriving and switched his focus on that and the casual card game.

thinking of actually breaking the promise written in my url and actually killing off one of my wardens 😔😔😔
it's about my Aeducan, Portia. she already dies in her canon worldstate, since she refuses Morrigan's offer, but she was supposed to live in my all-my-wardens-in-one worldstate, but I'm so used to her storyline finishing at the end of origins, and it just doesn't sit right, I feel almost like I'm betraying her character by making her live?
So I think she's actually going to die at her Warden joining (it happens just before the archdemon fight in my multiple-wardens worldstate, since only my Mahariel (Mela) was actually conscripted by Duncan at the beginning of the game, the other "origins" joined the adventure later on by different means. So, yeah, once they meet Riordan they decide to all join, despite the danger. Each one sort of has their own reasons, but Portia does it mainly because she honestly believes that's the only option she has left if she wishes to live in dignity. She lost everything but she can still be worthy of Orzammar if she stands by its values. Killing darkspawn, devoting her life to it, that's her calling now.
And she met people she truly learned to care about, and she bonded with Brosca (Korinn) like with a sister she never had, and learned to see her place as (former) princess of Orzammar in a whole new light, and she fell in love with Leliana and and and... but she needs it, she needs it to make things right, and she's determined, almost happy, she's where she's supposed to be.
And she dies.
While her best friends make it, and have to live on.
Cousland (Ilsramel), who agreed to the joining, but by the Maker, he didn't want to, he was so scared. He was so happy to be alive, in love, so unwilling to lose any of this, to risk it, after losing so much already. But he drinks from the cup, because he's even more scared of being left alone, and he makes it, and relief and joy turn immediately into cold stone guilt, knowing he made it, but Aeducan didn't. And he'll carry this weight all the rest of his life. He lived, so he must carry her dream too now.
And Brosca (Korinn), after the Battle of Denerim, coming back to Orzammar. And she never cared about politics or it all, not even much about the Casteless, because that's just too big and useless brainfarts to lose time on when she needed to bring food to the table. But now she gets it. Now it's their people, their story, their legacy. And she'll make it better, she'll maker Aeducan proud, and, closer to the Stone like that, she can almost feel her by her side.
#oc : portia#oc : Ilsramel#oc : korinn#just writing stuff down#i care about the little creatures in my head! this is my way of paying respect to them

a guide to the cult of bhaal, as found in baldurs gate, written 1490 DR.
the hierarchy.
the temple located in the undercity of baldurs gate is led by the high primistress korinn maelcress, supported by her second in command, the first murder, orin the red. the resurrected sarevok anchev serves as apparent leader of the nine cowled deaths, reporting to his granddaughter orin, and standing as head of the murder tribunal. all highest positions of leadership within the church are currently held by bhaalspawn, although the lower offices are held by the regular cultist.
whilst the high primistress would typically only lead a specific faction of the church, all remaining factions across the sword coast report to the city due to the selection of korinn as bhaals chosen. it's unclear if this change to the hierarchy would stand should another chosen take her place.
over the last decade, the bhaalists have made a concentrated effort to recruit from the lower city. the high primistress, since her ascension, has divided recruitment into two specific efforts. the cowled deaths continue their outreach with the common killer, approaching them with the expected dogma to recruit new night blades / reapers / assassins.
korinn herself leads the second effort to recruit new cultists from the most vulnerable in the lower city, using the strength and fear of her fathers dogma to lure in those who desire power and the chance to gain it. as such, the temple finds itself full of fresh initiatives eager to learn and prospective recruits seeking them out.
the temple.
the temple as found in the undercity has seen better days. largely disused in the century since the bhaalspawn crisis, there have been recent efforts to restore the sites of bhaal worship in the city. the bhaalist crypt, seat of the murder tribunal and cowled deaths, has already been largely restored with only superficial damage remaining. the antechamber to the hall to the hidden sacrificial chamber beyond all see regular use, and the site was expanded to include holding cells and an area to take inventory of their victims possessions.
the temple of bhaal has so far seen only limited repair with broken staircases and collapsed pillars. while there have been efforts to restore the most important areas for worship, it'll likely be many more years before all of the temple is accessible again. the bridge leading to the temple has been fitted with traps designed to release the blood of their victims from a chamber hidden somewhere in the temple. as expected of bhaal worship, there are multiple hidden rooms within the temple with the most important being bhaal's rest, its location only being known to the high primistress, which houses a steel sarcophagus with a decorated skull head.
other restored locations within the temple include the body alcoves, displaying notable kills and their possessions, and the room of the high primistress which has been expanded to account for it doubling as room of the chosen. for those residing at the temple, there are smaller private rooms for leaders within the temple, and shared dormitories for the regular cultist.
the entrance to the old library is collapsed leading to the establishment of a lending library within the inner sanctum holding important texts, still there are active efforts to clear the way into the library so that it can be restored and sacred items can be placed on display.
descending into the temple will reveal a variety of rooms, including private rooms for worship, an armoury, research rooms for cultists selecting their next targets or preparing their first, and finally a closely guarded room to keep sacrificial kills. the room is well kept and near luxurious, sacrifices being well fed and bathed in the days leading up to their slaughter in bhaals name.
the central feature of the temple is the inner sanctum, a circular platform with a stone altar of bhaal set in the middle, and witnessed by the large carving of a skull into the wall above. there are gutters leading out from the altar that fill with blood upon release, as well as funnels that collect the blood from sacrifices and lead to the hidden chamber. only the heads of the temple are permitted to stand on the platform during sacrifices, with few exceptions, with cultists filling the rest of the space for prayer.
in the last few years there have been new efforts to earn gold for the temple. the longest standing one, besides looting corpses, being candulhallow's tombstones which hides the entrance to the bhaalist crypt and makes a small profit on selling high end tombstones to the city's residents. cultists have been encouraged, as well, to take on bounties and paid assassinations to seek wealth in bhaals name. a recent venture has been the selling of excess blood and bodies of the cults victims to more questionable residents of the lower city, causing an additional room to be set up in the lower part of the temple to keep these bodies and bottles of neatly labelled blood.
traditions.
traditionally, there was a strict code of dress for bhaalists within the temple regardless of whether they were there during a ceremony or simply residing there. it was expected to wear purple or black robes, with limited allowance for personal alterations such as bone adornments or sashes, regardless of their place within the hierarchy. when embarking on a mission or a quest, cultists were expected to wear full armour and a cape of high quality.
the modern church of bhaal has largely done away with this for those in higher rank, with only the lower levels of cultist like the reapers and night blades still required to wear robes in purple and black and hiding their faces at all times. the level above, invokers and deaths heads, also have a set uniform to wear in simple leather armour in black and other dark colours.
cultists of a higher rank can now dress as they choose, although the leaders of the church tend towards wearing their preferred armour regardless of the occasion. the high primistress has four sets of armour to pick from, some displaying bhaals symbol prominently and others more discreet for venturing above ground. one tradition that still holds is the use of ceremonial daggers, with one being presented to each cultist upon passing their final test as an acolyte to carry, although only highest ranking cultists are permitted to use them in their killings.
a recent change in tradition, albeit an unspoken one, is the allowance of non cultists into the temple. in the past, anyone seeking the temple would first have to pass through the chasm to prove themselves worthy of entrance to the temple. recently, however, the high primistress has personally escorted guests down to the temple without any such tests ; whilst not unexpected for personal guests and close allies, she has taken small groups from the lower city should they show promise during her recruitment efforts. these individuals are watched closely after returning to the city and will be killed if they refuse the cult, otherwise they are left to make the journey back to the temple alone.
rituals.
whilst bhaalists have a reputation for disorganisation and infighting, the church of bhaal prides itself on its observance of several holy rituals. the most commonly known are their holy killings ; as all killings are made in the name of bhaal, this shouldn't be mistaken for sacrificial killings performed at the temple. as expected of the god of murder, the majority of rituals involve the celebration of murder and honouring the process of taking a life.
one ritual cultists must perform before ascending to a higher rank requires secrecy from all those involved. the cultist is charged with a target by a higher member of the church and must go out and kill them with only their bare hands. upon completion, they must privately inform the high primistress, or the highest ranking member of the church available, so that the kill can be verified. when all conditions are met, the senior members of the church organise a special ceremony in the sanctum with the cultist assisting in a sacrifice to bhaal.
a monthly ritual observed by the temple involves the previously mentioned bhaal's rest. once a month, the bhaalist with the greatest kill count or the most impressive kill is rewarded by undertaking bhaal's rest. rather than a sacrifice to bhaal, the winning cultist accompanies the high primistress in leading prayer that night before being blindfolded and led to the hidden room. there the sarcophagus is filled with blood of previous sacrifices and the cultist is shut inside for the night.
a lesser but private ritual followed by bhaalists is the day's farewell, to be undertaken at the end of the day or before setting out for the hunt if they have a target that night. the cultist must give thanks to bhaal as they wash their hands in blood, and while many rituals require the use of humanoid blood the days farewell allows for any blood so long as its observed.
bhaalists have their own observation for the feast of the moon, the only ritual the church of bhaal follows on a specific date. gathering at the temple for a ritual feast, they discuss notable kills from the previous year as well as those cultists who died in their service. usually these stories are of their own kills but its not uncommon for younger cultists to share stories of infamous bhaalspawn.
dogma.
'murder is not just a duty, but as pleasure. let your killings be especially elegant, or grisly, or seem easy so that those observing them are awed or terrified. make all folk fear bhaal. tell folk that gold proffered to the church can make the lord of murder overlook them for today.
every single murder you commit strengthens our master. you are required to kill once every tenday, during the darkest time of the night. if this is not possible for any reason, such as imprisonment or other constraining circumstances, you will make up for your killings twice over.'
