Katsu Bar, 3801 W 6th St, Los Angeles (Koreatown), CA 90020
Tumblr media
Katsu Bar, a Korean take on Japanese food, has a polished fast food feel. The menu includes fried chicken sandwiches, katsu sandos, katsu & katsu curry plates, ramen, and udon. There are more katsu options than usual: chicken, pork, or portobello. You can also choose the sauce (berry katsu, spicy mayo, Baja chipotle, BBQ) they use in your katsu sando. The daily special is one item of the day that’s $10 and dine-in only.
Order at one of the kiosks at the register. Someone will bring the food to you if you choose to dine in. The food was ready quickly.
Rosemary katsu sando ($10 on Tuesday, $13 regular price): yuzu cabbage, wholegrain mustard, Japanese milk bread with choice of sauce, served withy waffle fries. I couldn’t taste the yuzu in the cabbage slaw or the rosemary, probably because the spicy mayo flavor overwhelmed the other flavors? The sandwich was good – the pork was thin but juicy with a crisp, crunchy panko breadcrumb. It was served hot. The mayo did have some heat. The milk bread was soft and slightly sweet. The sandwich fell apart easily. They also left the crusts on the milk bread, not that I minded. The waffle fries were extra crispy (dipped in batter?) but soft on the inside. They were also served hot with ketchup on the side. It was a good value and satisfying.
The place was pleasant. It looked new and clean, with small white tables around the perimeter. They served the sandwich on a ceramic plate. Katsu Bar is in a strip mall with valet parking only. Parking is difficult to find in the area.

Calic Bagel, 2748 W 8th St, Ste 107, Los Angeles (Koreatown), CA 90005, Score: 34/50
Tumblr media
Calic Bagel opened recently in Koreatown. They offer LA style bagels, hand-rolled, and baked daily. They’re known for their Calic stuffed bagel which is a take on the Korean cream cheese garlic butter bread. Except for the super loud music, it’s actually a great camping spot. Place your order at the kiosk and they’ll bring your order to you.
Score: 34/50
Food: 4/5 – They have bagels (4 kinds: plain, sesame, everything, jalapeno cheddar), schmears (blueberry, fig pecan, jeju hallabong, sweet corn, black sesame, etc.), stuffed bagels, and bagel sandwiches. Bagels are $3. Bagels are on the softer side.
Coffee: 3/5 – I didn’t have coffee but they carry Groundworks organic coffee. I don’t think they have a full espresso bar.
Wi-fi: 4/5 – Free, unlimited, the password is posted by the register, wasn’t stable
Ambiance: 4/5 – Newish looking, semi-industrial, fairly simple décor but pleasant
Noise: 1/5 – Loudest pop music ever
Plugs: 3/5 – Saw three outlets
Parking: 5/5 – Covered underground parking, plenty of spaces
Comfort: 3/5 – Some chairs are padded, some are not, tables are close together
Bathroom: 5/5 – Male and female restrooms with stalls, nice looking
Art: 3/5 – Nothing, some color photos of their offerings
Tips: They also sell some drinks, hot sauce, salt, and other condiments. Online ordering is available.

Flour Fresh Cream Donut, 833 S Western Ave #38, Los Angeles (Koreatown), CA 90005
Tumblr media
Love whipped cream, so the idea of milk cream donuts definitely appeals to me. Flour Fresh Cream Donut opened last year inside the Rodeo Galleria in Koreatown (there was once a froyo stand inside the Rodeo Galleria). The Korean donut shop has a variety of filled, raised donuts (e.g., crème brulee, Boston cream, s’mores, misugaru, sweet potato, blueberry milk cream, black sesame, strawberry milk cream), and also fluffy twist donuts. The donuts start at $4 each. They also have donut sandwiches, coffee, and tea (including Korean tea).
If you order at least 4, you get a nice box. I don’t think there’s any quantity discount though.
Strawberry milk cream donut ($4.50): There’s plenty of cream in the center but it’s piped in (vs. splitting the donut in half and making a donut cream sandwich) with a swirl on top. The donut is served cold (refrigerated). The temperature threw me for a second. The raised donut was chewy and not too sweet. The cream was also not that sweet. I was expecting more strawberry flavor though. The cream had no strawberry flavor. All they did was add half a fresh strawberry on top.
Unfortunately, they don’t have the sandwich style milk cream donuts.
BLT donut sandwich ($8): The round raised donut was cut in half. The donut was not glazed and wasn’t that sweet. It had some type of crumb (panko?) on the outside. The sandwich was really good and with ample filling– lots of romaine lettuce, thick pieces of bacon, an egg, thick slice of tomato, and mayo. It was simple but the donut elevated it.
Order at the counter. They have a few tables inside. Parking is easy to find and limited to two hours.
