Korean Art and Craft: A Fusion of Timeless Traditions
Korean art and craft are a mesmerizing fusion of several traditions from this culturally rich country. Rooted in ancient customs, these art forms have evolved over the centuries, encompassing calligraphy, pottery, painting, and handicrafts. Utilizing a diverse array of mediums, colors, textures, and materials, these artistic skills have been passed down through generations by master craftsmen. Let's delve into the unique and captivating world of traditional Korean art and craft.
Calligraphy - An Art of Elegance:
Among the most cherished Korean art forms is calligraphy, the art of handwriting. Its origins lie in China but were embraced and refined by Korean artists over the centuries. The beauty of calligraphy lies in the character lines, brushstroke intensity, and nuanced tones of ink. Calligraphers often use the "Four Treasures of the Study" - paper, brush, ink stick, and inkstone - to create their masterpieces. This art form shares a connection with ink and wash painting, as both utilize similar tools.
In Korean calligraphy, the "Four Friends" are paper, a brush, an ink stick, and an ink stone, collectively known as Munbangsawoo. Traditional hanji, made from Korean mulberry, is a preferred paper for calligraphy, offering excellent absorbency and reflection of ink. Calligraphy in Korean art encompasses various styles, including script calligraphy, cursive or grass script, block script, and official script.
Korean Pottery - A Tale of Timeless Beauty:
Korean pottery is another exquisite art form deeply ingrained in the country's history. Three main types of Korean pottery are commonly distinguished - Cheongja (blue-green celadon), Buncheong (slip-coated stoneware), and Baekja (white porcelain). Each type holds its own unique allure, but the white porcelain, in particular, has garnered praise from collectors worldwide.
Goryeo Celadon, crafted between 700 and 1,000 years ago, is renowned for its jade blue color and intricate inlay decoration. White porcelain, the primary ceramic art between 100 and 600 years ago, features motifs painted with oxidized iron, copper, or cobalt blue pigments imported from Persia via China. On the other hand, Buncheong porcelain, developed by Goryeo potters, gained popularity under the Joseon dynasty, presenting a realistic and unpretentious style.
Handcrafts - A Reflection of Artistry:
Korean artisans once created an array of handcrafted goods for their homes, showcasing their skill and creativity. They wove beautiful baskets, boxes, and mats using bamboo, adorned with natural black and red lacquer for durability and beauty. Masks, dolls, and ceremonial ornaments made from Korean mulberry paper demonstrated their artistry.
Embroidery, decorative knot-making (made up), and natural dyes also played a significant role in traditional Korean arts and crafts. The art of hand embroidery, the most time-consuming and skill-intensive of all, captivates with its intricate designs of silk flowers and animals. Additionally, jogakbo, made by stitching small pieces of fabric together, serves as both wrapping cloth and an artistic marvel.
Paintings - Portraits of Korean History:
Painting has long been the cornerstone of Korean art, providing glimpses into the country's beliefs, artistic sensibilities, and techniques. Goguryeo tomb paintings, dating back centuries, offer valuable insights into early Korean artistry and beliefs. Goryeo artists excelled in capturing Buddhist icons, while Joseon's literary elite were drawn to idealized landscapes and plant and animal symbolism.
Types of Korean paintings include Daoist paintings, Buddhist paintings found in abundance at temples, Confucian paintings with themes of fidelity and filial piety, and decorative paintings used for ornamental purposes. The works of artists like Kim Hong-do and Sin Yun-bok added diversity and realism to Korean art, depicting scenes of everyday life and even moments of intimacy.
Korean art and craft, a treasure trove of diverse traditions, continue to inspire awe and admiration. These art forms, from calligraphy's graceful strokes to pottery's timeless beauty, reflect the nation's rich cultural heritage. The preservation efforts by organizations like the National Intangible Heritage Centre and the Korea Cultural Heritage Foundation have ensured that these masterpieces remain alive and cherished. Today, galleries and exhibits proudly showcase these crafts, offering an invaluable glimpse into Korea's illustrious history and artistic legacy.

Making porcelain moon jars at the moment 🌜Moon jars were made in Korea in the 1300s to 1900s and used for wine, flowers or as ritual votive vessels. They are made in two halves, which unite to create a unique organic shape, and often with uneven surface and milky white finish. With my obsession for looking skyward, the progression felt inevitable. Let's see where we go from here... 💕 . . #moonjar #koreanpottery #clairedeluneart #ceramics #porcelain #clay #moon #jar #handbuilding #love #white #inthestudio #wip #adambuik #joseon #lucyrie #history #new #handmade #vessel #votive #offering https://www.instagram.com/p/ByVCACvl7Vy/?igshid=hrv0g5j335uh

@yidopottery 🍵 Review🍵. ⚜️ Yido Pottery Handmade Straight Mug. ⚜️ History: Yido Pottery brings Art to Daily Lives. Yido creates Handcrafted Traditional Korean Pottery, while sharing Beauty in Korean Ceramics. Yido wanted to keep the tradition alive, with the original handmade & handcrafted pottery making techniques. The Founder; Yi Yoonshin, is a ceramic artist. I love this quote by Yi Yoonshin; “The bowl is completed only when the food is contained. The most important condition of a good bowl is how good it makes food”. ⚜️ Details: This sturdy handcrafted mug is simple, yet unique! The mug comes from the Collection; “Cheongyeon”. It’s a “Refined aesthetics of blue”. Each piece, including this simple but lovely mug, has unique qualities. Each piece is glazed with 💯 % natural materials, and then fired in a kiln at 1,250*C. This glazing & firing helps create the unique colors. ⚜️ My thoughts: As you can see in my photos; I decided to enjoy some of my Osulloc Orange tea in my New Yido Mug with breakfast! It keeps my Tea warm, and just looks beautiful with the colors! My Yido Pottery Mug fits nicely in my hand, and easy to sip my tea. The bottom won’t slip, it’s more rough than the rest of the mug. I would love to collect a Set of this Yido Pottery, and also recently got the Bowl. I just haven’t opened it yet, to get photos on how well these are wrapped for protection during shipping. 🤩 I like that they are Lead & Cadmium Free! ⚜️ Thanks to @0.8l_usa for letting me try this Complimentary for my review, and for @yidopottery for creating Art for Daily Living! 🍵 #yido #yidopottery #handmade #mug #cup #pottery #Korea #artwork #koreanpottery #koreanartwork #lifestyle #blogger #08liter #08L #literite https://www.instagram.com/p/BnLGCXpBi20/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=mynu47ztjhh7

Cheongyeon Handmade Straight Mug kindly provided by @08l_usa & @yidopottery complimentary in exchange for my honest review. 7oz. Retails for $25. Avail at yidomall.com.. ▫️ 🍵🍵🍵🍵🍵 Design 5.0.. Unique celadon green handmade mug that is the epitome of elegance in minimalism. Each piece is a special piece of artwork handcrafted in South Korea. They design simply designed dinnerware that makes food look appealing. 🍵🍵🍵🍵🍵 Durability 5.0.. Made with 100% South Korean Clay, a smear of glaze, brown dots & freckles. Micro & dishwasher safe ✔️ Heavy feel. 🍵🍵🍵🍵1/2 Functionality 4.5.. Pieces are intended for serving not cooking but are microwave and dishwasher safe. They should not be placed on direct heat sources. Also hand washing is recommended to avoid soaking in water. Mild detergents must be used as well. ▫️ My thoughts 💭 Minimalistic, clean lined design with gorgeous handmade details, this mug by yidopottery grabbed my full attention when I became aware of the brand. Upon arrival, I was a bit worried as it wasn’t packed in the most efficient way, so I was afraid it was going to be damaged. It was safe, but much smaller than I expected. For me, I think it’s most appropriate as a tea 🍵 cup or to use in a decorative way. It is really beautiful!! I especially adore the bronze emblem on the side which makes it unique & gives it a special feel. But I like my coffee ☕️ cups to be giant sized! Although, I do appreciate that this can reheat my coffee in the microwave! That’s a big plus! Seriously, there is no point to a coffee ☕️ cup if you can’t heat in in the microwave! Overall, this is a lovely piece of handmade pottery and I will enjoy getting to use it in various ways! What’s your favorite brand of coffee? I’m always on the search for a good affordable bold roast!!.. . . . #yido #yidopottery #handmade #mug #cup #pottery #Korea #artwork #koreanpottery #koreanartwork #lifestyle #blogger #08liter #08L #08LBestAugust #koreanproduct

Yeoju Pottery Tour
Saturday, February 18, 2016 We visited the town of Yeoju today on a bus tour to see Korean pottery. The tour was organized by the army MWR (Morale, Welfare and Recreation) office. It was a busy day and we are enjoying some down time at home now! We left around 8am and returned at 5pm. Along the way, our bus stopped at about half a dozen pottery studios and storefronts. We were amazed at the variety of ceramics available! There was every type of pottery you could imagine from traditional kimchi pots and folksy planters to the finest and most detailed porcelain vases. It was enjoyable seeing the variety of ceramics and we took note of several shopping outlets my parents may enjoy seeing when they visit in June.
There were 9 of us on the bus tour including my new friend Kim James and 2 ladies she introduced us to, Sammie and Michelle. Shawn was one of only two men in the group and somewhat kept to himself so I could enjoy some girl talk. Since neither of us are big shoppers, we were finished at each stop sooner than many of the other attendees. We had been under the impression that the trip was more educational and included some tutorials or touring of actual working ceramic studios and techniques. Unfortunately, it was simply a shopping trip - but we know now for next time! Shawn and I did get 4 small pieces of pottery to remember our stay here in Korea! For more information at Korean ceramics, see the links below: Yeoju Ceramic Art Complex

I visited some East Asian galleries at the art museum today, and made some drawings! I consider the first three to be finished. They are all examples of Korean ceramics: the oil bottle comes from the Three Kingdoms Period and the celadon pieces come from the later Goryeo period. Last is a work-in-progress sketch of a Japanese warrior. I will post an update of this sketch in the future.
