Quick and dirty. Literally. I dropped my deep fryer in my sink while trying to put away the used oil. Fucking horror show.
This one was so fast, I even forgot to take a photo of the marinade. It was very dark, pretty much black from the soy sauce and black vinegar, with chunks of garlic in it. I didn't have dark brown sugar, so I used golden sugar with a touch of molasses. Chinese cooking wine smells surprisingly sweet, this is the first time I've used it. And of course, Chinese five spice.
Marinated for 10 hours while I was at work, after pounding the cutlets to flatten them out a little.
Another recipe with triple step dredging. Which you know I hate. It was meant to have chili paste on the side, but the closest thing I could find was Korean hot pepper paste. Not exactly right for a Chinese pork sandwich, but the flavour profile went really nicely.
Nearly forgot to snap a photo of the plain ass sandwich, so here's a couch shot right before I bit into it. Nothing but toasted white bread, and the fried pork cutlet.

Taste was a 3 out of 5. Juicy and flavourful, but still a little dry with nothing spread on the toast.
Difficulty was a 2 out of 5. Very straightforward as long as you don't drop your deep fryer...
Time was about 20 minutes, not including marinade time.
If I made this again, I would pan fry it to make my life easier. I hate this tiny deep fryer. I would also spread the chili paste onto the toast instead of awkwardly dipping the sandwich into it.

Familiar Wife. Food.
In episode five our two main dorks go to a tiny little restaurant for 단까수. I’ve seen it in a few dramas before and thought it looked delicious.
So tonight I got everything I needed and made it for my family. Everyone loved it.
Even my stereotypical teenage niece. She eats cereal, Mac n cheese, and microwaves ramen. 💀
I expected her to say “naw.” when I asked her if she wanted some but she took some of everything—even the sauce (which had onion in it which she says she hates) after I had her taste it.
After dinner she had a clean plate. Something that’s rare for her. And she said, “It was really good.”

WITCHY KOREAN STYLE PORK CUTLET
This stuff is sooo good. I highly recommend you make this ^_^
Ingredients
For the pork cutlet:
4 thin sliced boneless pork loin (tenderized)
1 cup panko breadcrumbs
1 egg
3/4 cup flour
Salt and pepper (enough to season the meat)
1 cup canola oil
For the gravy:
4 tbsp butter
1/4 cup flour
1/2 cup Worcestershire sauce
1/4 cup water
1/2 cup beef broth
1/2 tbsp sugar
1 tsp tomato paste
3 tbsp milk
To make the Pork: Beat your egg, and set out three plates. One for the egg, one for the bread crumbs, and one for the flour. Tenderize your pork until very thin. Season with salt and pepper. Coat in flour and dip in egg coating evenly. Cover each side with breadcrumbs and place all your port chops on a plate covered in plastic wrap for later use.
To make the gravy: On medium heat melt butter and stir in flour. Add in your Worcestershire sauce, water, and beef broth. Wait for it to combine and thicken stirring frequently. Now add in sugar and milk. Let it simmer on low heat for about 5 more minutes.
Cooking instructions: Cook your pork in a deep pot filled with oil on high heat. Cook for 3 minutes before flipping it to its opposite side for another 3 minutes. Place paper towel over a plate and place your pork one by one on it. Serve your pork cutlet and spoon gravy on top, you can also serve with mashed potatos, and corn ^_^

Nara Chicken & Tonkatsu
Did you know when I was younger, I used to get tonkotsu & tonkatsu mixed up? I mean, I’m sure some ppl now-a-days get it mixed up.
Bcos my coworker friend Soomin & I started vacation at the same time, we went for dinner after work together. She really likes the tonkatsu from this place so we came here. It was my 1st time here~ but they have CHICKEN!!
Located in an obscure place; next to a daycare in the Meadowlark area. I *feel* like it’s gonna be good, judging by how they look lol
We were greeted a friendly ahjumma (Korean term for an older lady- middle aged). When we arrived, there was no one else in the restaurant for dining besides us. Yayyy!

My view. The water bottle is like. .. as Korean as it can get. I’m loving the vibe already haha you know, I wished all restaurants could have this water system. It makes more sense for the server to take away & refill the bottle/container OR bring a new one that’s already filled up from the kitchen, than going around & refilling glasses.
Here’s the rest of the restaurant. It’s a very narrow space. Not many tables, but that doesn’t mean larger parties aren’t welcome. I’m sure they just pull up tables but still, the space would only allow for max 8 ppl (2x tables of 4). I don’t think it can do 2 ‘large’ tables of 8. It’d be very crowded.
Anyway, the food came fairly fast bcos again, we were the only ppl there at the time. No one would awkwardly eat dinner at 1640h xD
Soomin’s pizza tonkatsu. It comes with a bowl of rice & a little salad (the tonkatsu sauce not in picture). The bowl of brown sauce off to the side is Soomin’s side order of curry bcos she doesn’t like rice LOL so she has to have something saucy/soup-y to eat her rice with.
The pizza tonkatsu looked different than what I had in mind. I was imagining a flat cutlet with cheese & stuff on top. .. like a pizza. But it was stuffed-style. I had a piece & it was good! Super crispy. It was probably like 70% cheese when you examine the ‘height’ of the tonkatsu. The flavour was not very pizza-y. Subtle pasta sauce flavour but mostly cheese. A LOT OF IT. See below for the width of the pork layer.
Now here’s mine.. the cheese tonkatsu. I thought the pizza one had A LOT of cheese but this one had MORE cheese proportionally. Don’t let the 4 pieces fool you- it gets super filling bcos the breaded pork cutlet basically act like a bowl for the cheese o_O in this picture, you can see how thin the pork layer is. It was like this for the pizza tonkatsu as well. Flavour-wise. .. honestly, all I could was cheese. The meat layer was so thin I almost forgot it was there. It almost blends in with the cheese, you know what I mean? So texture-ally, it was basically deep fried cheese.
We also 1/2 order of the original fried chicken. Half order here was 6 pieces.. . =/ I can tell you know that the chicken is better than SFC, which USED to be my fav Korean chicken place but not anymore. I found the chicken here a little over-fried; however, overall, decent chicken with juicy meat & crunchy exterior. It comes with kimchi & pickled radish.
VERY steep pricing here. I’m not sure if the tonkatsu was worth $20 each. But I’m no expert with tonkatsu. Is this the market price for tonkatsu? I have no idea. It just doesn’t seem like much & there was more cheese than anything else. I don’t think it is worth $20 personally. As for the half order of chicken .. $16 is also very expensive to me - esp when you compare 6 pieces to 11 pieces from Chicken For You. (with the latter being better quality fried chicken)
Overall, the food was decent. TBH I was disappointed in the tonkatsu bcos there was just SO much cheese & so little meat. The thinness of the meat was comparable to grocery store deli-cut sandwich meats, ie: very thin! The place is worth a try, IMHO, but now that I’ve tried it, I don’t think I will go back unless someone else suggests going/ordering from there.

First Week of School
I made it through my first full week of school, and I think I’m going to have a lot of fun. My class is from all over the place: Syria, Spain, Colombia, Thailand, Japan, Macau, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Australia, and the US. I was expecting it to be a diverse class, but wow. It was kind of strange at first being in a classroom where there was no common language, but I haven’t been stressed or overwhelmed by it. I already love my teachers, and they’re super welcoming and friendly. The age range in my class is also huge, and it’s really nice being in a learning environment where grades aren’t a concern. I know midterms and finals will be a little bit stressful (as these are basically our only two grades) but in the meanwhile I will just be enjoying my learning. I’m suspicious over how/if I’ll make a friend/friend group in the class, but the four hours we spend together has been a great time.
In addition to the main class, I signed up for a pronunciation class that hasn’t started yet, and I have a tutor with two other Yale students. The tutor has been kind of questionable so far (especially given the price we’re paying for it) but we’ll see how it goes.
I’ve finally gotten into a solid routine which consists of going to class, the gym, watching k dramas, reading, cooking (sortof), and studying. This has been more than enough to keep me busy, and I’m glad I fit in as many toursity before school started as I did. I’m currently experimenting with cooking, and although I wasn’t planning on doing it, nor do I know how to, I don’t really like the idea of going every night to eat. So I’ve only been making some pretty basic things right now, like beans and pasta, but I hope to get more sophisticated. It is quite hard though, because on top of my lacking skills, the kitchen is very limited.
A Tasty Meal by David Landolfi
Besides getting in a routine/school, I’ve been exploring when I have larger chunks of time, doing some fun things with Light fellows, and having talks with religious people who urge my presence at their church. The people in Seoul who hand out fliers/advertisements, intentional don’t hand them to foreigners I’m pretty sure, but for these religious groups I think its the opposite. At first you think they want to have an innocent conversation and you say to yourself ‘wow, this is so nice.’ Then you realize they’re either trying to get you to join their cult or have you buy something, and you have to find the quickest escape route. I somehow keep ending these interactions by giving them my contact information, and regretting it the second the walk away.
I’ll end my rant for now. It’s been quite a while since my last blog post, but I decided that I wanted to get through my first full week of school before writing again. I’ll leave u with some notes and pictures.
Notable foods I’ve tried since last blog post
-Butter Janjeorim bibimbap: Apparently a childhood favorite - butter, meat, rice, and a few vegetables. Mix it around and you have urself a tasty meal!
-Sundae (Pronounced soondae): A super cheap street food that’s basically a full meal. All you need to know is that their blood sausages, don’t look into how they’re made any further or you won’t want to eat them
-Tonkatsu: Japanese-style pork cutlet that’s really common in Korea. Had it with oodong noodles which were also quite tasty
-Tonight I’m going to Korean all-you-can-eat barbecue and I could not be more excited. I’ll let you know if it lives up to the hype.
