I'm impressed with how well Doi's new Konohana Sakuya harmonizes with Kaneko's existing Nocturne JP goddesses despite not being part of their exact same template.
I dare say the demons revealed for Vengeance thus far are some of Doi's best yet and may mark a turning point for him as a demon designer!

New post! This was a lot of fun to read about. I've seen many fujizuka in my life, and I think it's a wonderful way to make mountain worship more accessible.

omg I just saw that your post saying you opened your asks and had to run to ask you this thing I've been dying to for ages lmao.
I wanted to know your thoughts on the SS theory that Kishimoto based Sasuke and Sakura's writing on Japanese gods Ninigi no Mikoto and Konohana Sakuya Hime. It's a very old theory that I've found in forums dating as back as 2008 so I assumed that you might be familiar with it. I've only seen one SNS blog discuss it which I found strange for the same reason of being an old theory. Anyway, hope you have a great day!
I have seen it before, yes. To be honest I don't have much more to say than the other person. It's a flimsy theory because the only similarity is stuff like her name and Ninigi being associated with Amaterasu and Kusanagi.
What did their relationship contribute to? People living short lives because Ninigi was cursed for his shallowness (only liking her for her looks). So this is obviously not positive, but where is anything referring to their relationship and what it's supposed to represent shown in the manga? Unless you count Sakura liking Sasuke only for shallow reasons, I'm not seeing any.
Meanwhile, Naruto and Sasuke's mythology reference is shown as them being complimentary opposites that cooperate together and find true happiness within each other (chapter 698). [link] Once again SS is all about style with no substance (and that's me being generous because their ship is far from having style either). Kind of like how they don't care about development, context or narrative in anything else either.

Ouyamatsumi - Day 173
Race: Kunitsu Arcana: Strength Alignment: Light-Chaos March 24th, 2025
Tumblr media
One of my favorite aspects of SMT V is the presence of Punishing Foes: giant demons that roam the map and prove to be a far bigger hurdle to battle than most of the other demons throughout. While I have my issues with SMT V's exploration, (mainly in the samey environments, though that was addressed in Vengeance,) the Punishing Foes add a lot of extra challenge, and it can be seen first in the very first Punishing Foe you ever encounter in the game. Who doesn't remember when you first arrive in Da'at and see this massive stoney being walking around in the distance, only to realize that, holy shit, you can fight it?! Only for you to be sent right back to the main menu because, well, what did you expect. That first massive demon you run into isn't just some nameless golem, though- it's Ouyamatsumi, and his role as a major (albeit optional) hurdle in the game is well fitting, given how powerful he is in the mythology he comes from.
Interestingly, Oyamatsumi isn't actually mentioned very often- he's a rather obscure Kami in the Shinto pantheon, all things considered, but given what we do know about him, he was incredibly interesting. Oyamatsumi was one of the first kami born to Izanami and Izanagi, and, importantly, he was also the older brother of both Susanoo and Amaterasu. This is incredibly interesting given one major fact- he was a Kunitsukami, while both Amaterasu and Susanoo were Amatsukami and the relationship between Kunitsukami and Amatsukami was rather famously very strained, to say the least. Past this, Oyamatsumi was also a god of mountains, the sea, and, curiously, a god of war as well- while Hachiman was typically seen as the god of war, he was more the patron god of warriors, while Oyamatsumi seems to have been the god of war as a concept overall.
Most of what we know about Oyamatsumi, though, is in his startlingly long lineage. After he got married to Kaya-no-Hime, the two pumped out babies like there was no tomorrow, giving birth to many genderless deities. This is recounted in the Kamiumi, which states that they birthed Ame no Sazuchi, among many others. Their children... also don't have many sources, but one of his children does. He gave birth to none other than Konohanasakuya-hime, one of the most important deities in the entire pantheon, as well as the healing queen of many a Vengeance run. Admittedly, the family tree of the kami is about as complicated as any other religion, so that's about all I can go off of regarding this topic, but still- being the baby daddy of several NB deities and then the father of Konohana Sakuya is definitely worth noting.
There's not much more to go off of, past this, though- he may have been the god of Mt. Fuji, but most sources say that role belonged to Konohana Sakuya, so yeah. A little hard to parse. Still, he's a very cool figure from what we know about him, but I'm also admittedly very tired today and haven't had anything to help me wake up yet so I'm kinda running on fumes and can't really do much more research past this. In SMT, Ouyamatsumi takes a lot of inspiration from his role as a god of the mountains, being made of literal earth and stone, and I honestly love his design- I'm so glad they didn't stray away from making him look like a living mountain, especially in SMT V, where his sheer scale makes it clear what his role is, right away.

It's funny how ss fans can be wrong even when they are... right. Yes, I'm not contradicting myself.
As you all can see thanks to the pics I posted, one of them was "talking" (read: whining) about how ss has mythology references as well.
Well, I won't denying it.
Saying otherwise could be 1. false, 2. wrong, 3. hypocrite, 4. honestly against my very line of work.
However, I would like to point out something:
Ninigi has, indeed, similiarities with Sasuke, such as:
a. his "connection" with Amaterasu
b. kusanagi
c. he will marry Sakura
But. The similiarities end here.
Now, that could be hardly casual given Kishimoto's clear knowledge of mythology, history and literature; however, aside from the marriage and the sakura flower, the similiarities between Sakura and Sakuya-hime, instead, stop here.
Thinking he could have used this specific, eventual, references to mark Sasuke and Sakura's relationship as a romantic one is ontologically wrong.
Why? For the genericity of the references, obviously.
Amaterasu and Kusanagi are two milestones of Japanese mythology and one can find them in several legends, related to very different characters.
Secondly, the comparison between Sakura and Konohana Sakuya-hime isn't flattering.
She was the usual empty, batshit crazy woman who burned the hut with their children inside to prove she didn't cheat on him.
You can find it in every, single, version of the myth. The girl was not fine.
The usage of fire as well: great, really, but a fuckton of japanese deities are fire-repellent, so it's like to say... nothing spectacular?
Now, about the "sources" they shared:
Aside from the one pic with Kaguya (totally out of the blue, I would say, given I only stated sun and moon symbolism are often associated with sexual intercourses or lovers), we have:
Tumblr media
- Sakura and Sasuke's name on the sand (probably written by Sakura, don't know why this is relevant.
- Sasuke with kusanagi (that's okay) and snakes: here the snakes are clearly the focal point. But why? Was Ninigi associated with snakes?
- The cover with Sakura wearing a sakura-flowered dress and while holding the Uchiwa fan.
The last one specifically is... interesting because: where is the deep references? The flowers? That's the girl's name. The fan? It seems more like another sign of Sakura crushing on Sasuke and writing "Sakura Uchiha" on her notebook while giggling.
So, the point is:
If you want to make an analysis you need:
1. real sources (not photos already crafted to prove your ss point) - btw, I gave actual books, but they refused to take them in consideration;
2. to use images consistently.
Here a summarised analysis:
Shinjū is a Japanese term meaning "double suicide". Lovers committing double suicide believed that they would be united again in heaven. It was also possible for lovers to commit a murder-suicide (muri-shinjū).
This is a clear example of Shinjū's reference:
Tumblr media
Here, we have:
- the will to die together
- the hope they will meet again in the afterlife
- the "connection of hearts" (from the very term's meaning and the context)
Here the sources:
1. Becker, Buddhist Views of Suicide and Euthanasia, Philosophy East and West
2. Takahashi, Cultural dynamics and the unconscious in suicide in Japan
3. Leupp, Male Colors: The construction of homosexuality in Tokugawa Japan
4. Heldt, Between followers and friends: male homosocial desire in Heian Court Poetry
5. Saikaku Ihara, Love of Comrades
6. Saikaku Ihara, The Great Mirror of male love
7. Rogers, She loves me, she loves me not. Shinju and Shikido Okagami
8. Heine, Tragedy and Salvation in the Floating World
THIS is a sensible reference. And a very small analysis.
Tumblr media
And a parallelism.
Bye :)
PS Tumblr fucked up the pics order (sorryyyy)

Mishima Jinja
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
From the shrine history plaque:
"This shrine enshrines three Shinto deities: Oyamazumi-no-okami (god of sacred mountains). Amatsu-hidakahikoho-no-Ninigino-mikoto (the first legendary ancestor of the Imperial, Family), and Konohana-sakuya hime (goddess of fertility)
This shrine was originally founded in 1160 by imperial order Kenshun-mon-in formerty called Taira-no-Shigeko, consort of the retired Emporor Goshirakawa, had been childless and she prayed desperately to a deity named Mishima-no-kami in Settsu district. Receiving a divine prophecy, she became pregnant and gave birth to a prince, the future emperor Takakura. With profound thanks to Mishima-no-kami, ever powerful Goshirakawa ordered Taira-no-Shigemori to found a shrine, dedicating it to Mishima-no-kami.
This shrine has since been worshipped at not only by the Imperial Family but by the public for the sake of fertility and easy childbirth.
To this shrine are donated a large number of votive tablets with pictures of eels since the slippery fish is revered here as messenger of the divine guardian. It is still a practice for worshippers not to eat eels while praying for their wishes to come true.
An Unagi Matsuri (eel festival) is observed every autumn at this shrine with its deities adored as guardians of birth, growth, and free life for all creatures."

Is there any pattern with inspiration/relation to Konohana Sakuya?
Hi! Konohanasakuya-hime is the titular deity of Mount Fuji. She's traditionally associated with fleeting cherry blossoms because of this part of her myth:
Sakuya-hime met Ninigi on the seashore and they fell in love; Ninigi asked Ohoyamatsumi, the father of Sakuya-hime for her hand in marriage. Oho-Yama proposed his older daughter, Iwa-Naga-hime, instead, but Ninigi had his heart set on Sakuya-hime. Oho-Yama reluctantly agreed and Ninigi and Ko-no-hana married. Because Ninigi refused Iwa-Naga, the rock-princess, human lives are said to be short and fleeting, like the sakura blossoms, instead of enduring and long lasting, like stones (via wikipedia).
I have never encountered kimono or obi directly hinting at this goddess, but if you'd like to reference her, any sakura (flowers on trees or not, falling petals etc) and mountain pattern (Fujisan if possible of course ^^) would work nicely!
She's also a goddess associated with sake brewing, so sakura + sake objects (like masu or sakazuki cups for ex.) would be very cool!
If you are going a darker route, sakura + fire pattern could hint at the birth hut episode of her story - which also links her persona to volcanoes. (Note that sakura+braziers is usually a pattern association hinting at nighttime cherry blossom viewing parties)
(anyone played Okami around here? I just realized the camellia sisters could be a reference to this part of Konahana's mythos :3)

An excerpt from my travel journal…. I climbed Mount Fuji whilst menstruating! I feel like a superhero! I really can’t believe it happened and that, through each difficult step and intrusive thought to stop, I did it! What’s more surreal, is that I climbed this mountain with three male “strangers” that I met at my hostel 6 hours before! “Women were strictly forbidden from climbing the mountain for centuries until 1872, only being allowed access to the mountain as far as the second stage. One of the main reasons was that women, especially beautiful ones, may make Konohana-sakuya-hime angry and cause Mt Fuji to erupt” -wiki During our summit, we decided to read up about the mountain. This text about women not being able to climb the mountain, due to sheer male idiocracy, was enough to put fire in my belly! Not only was I a woman, but a currently menstruating woman, who hadn’t eaten breakfast! During the hike, I had to pee-twice! The people I was with were perfectly respectful of this- and I felt both efficient and relieved when I caught myself before I bled through to my white cargo trousers! Yep- I changed my tampon on Mount Fuji, and immediately after, got back to climbing it. You see, in addition to the beauty of the mountain, new friendships and personal challenges to overcome, there is nothing like a man saying I can’t that pushes me to prove that I can.
