Anyway,

I'm new here, so this might be way off, but, y'know... Canon is a gentle suggestion.

I think that both Tide Goes Out and Bomb Rush Blush were, to some degree, the Squid Sisters being pushed into rivalry in order to make the music sell better. Therefore, they were given these songs as pre-written material that didn't actually fit their artistic vision and instead served to appeal to the widest possible audiences.

To be completely honest, I don't have a ton of thoughts on Bomb Rush Blush. I love Callie as a character, especially since I saw your analysis of her, but her style of upbeat pop isn't generally my thing, so I have no clue how to come up with lyrics for her. This'll be entirely Marie-focused as a result. That being said, I'd love to hear your take on it for Callie!

Let's get the lyrics out of the way first. The first version to drop, at least in Tide's case, would probably be the Caitlin Koi one. No shade to her, of course, but her style of lyrics for this one seems to prioritize making it sound nice. They absolutely CAN be deep - some of the more recent songs showcase that really well! Just look at Unconscience, the writing on that one's incredible - but in some cases, her lyrics seem to follow more of a Swedish pop approach, y'know? It can be very "I Want It That Way"-esque, which makes a lot of sense for the Squid Sisters' careers.

That being said, I usually listen to Tide Goes Out slowed down by a lot (I just think it's smoother that way), and that does change the tone a bit. So, down the line, I think it'd be nice if they each got to re-release the songs and change them as they see fit.

Marie's ends up being a lot more depressing. Essentially, it's a love song, centered around an unhealthy relationship that she wishes she could make work, but she doesn't believe she's actually strong enough to mend.

There are some pretty clear parallels here, but what really got me attached to these lyrics are the key differences - not just in what kind of relationship it's about and what the context is, but, more subtly, the idea that Marie doesn't tend to fight for the things she wants, UNLESS it's to help Callie in some way. Because, holy SHIT, that hits a little too close to home!

The long and the short of it is, I think Marie has a lot of apathy holding her back, but her love for her family is strong enough to pull her through it. Unfortunately, she's gonna have a hard time being independent and living a life she's genuinely proud of if she can't do it for herself, too...

So I think this new version of the song should be about her and Callie both FINALLY being happy with who they are. They still support each other and have gotten better at communicating, but they can also function just fine as individuals. Also, beyond that, they're HAPPY!

Notably, Tidal Rush has a little bit more Tide than Rush, while Blushing Tide is more Blush than Tide. Not by a lot, but it's noticeable. And I think that's important, because it means Marie isn't as insecure about her leadership, and can now let Callie take the spotlight without worrying about it becoming a competition.

... Also, this doesn't mean much, but I think it'd be cute if Callie got a little more of a punk vibe moving forward. Like, that sort of Miley Cyrus or Demi Lovato thing, although probably not as intense since she already did some of that while working with Octavio. It'd contrast with Marie's more traditional tone really well, I think.

Edit: WAIT ONE MORE THING!!! I think this version of Tide should imply a happy ending! Like, something to show that Marie is willing to fight for herself now, too. I'm too tired to think of lyrics right now, but if Callie's love song gets to be a little "edgier", Marie's should get some softness to balance it out, too, y'know?

En Praga, República Checa, el 19 de octubre de 2023, FESTKA, el productor checo de cuadros de bicicletas de carbono de alta gama con sede en Praga, anuncia la última incorporación a su creciente línea de colaboraciones con artistas. Un Proyecto con un Trasfondo Personal El proyecto denominado Spectre Bodies, presentado en las últimas dos semanas en Designblok de Praga y en la edición de Bespoked de Dresde, la feria de bicicletas personalizadas más grande de Europa, tiene una historia muy personal en su corazón. Hace más de un año, durante un paseo con un grupo de clientes, Michael Moureček, co-fundador de Festka y diseñador de bicicletas, tuvo un grave accidente. Sufrió una lesión en la pierna que requirió una cirugía importante. Afortunadamente, todo salió bien y después de cientos de horas de fisioterapia y ejercicio, pudo volver a montar en bicicleta. Sin embargo, pronto se dio cuenta de que su cuerpo y su bicicleta actual ya no eran uno. Hablemos de algunos animes

Honestamente, no tenía en mi radar a muchos animes que salieron esta temporada, por lo que me fue una grata sorpresa descubrir tantos estrenos prometedores. Mencionaré algunos y mi impresión hasta ahora de ellos (la mayoría no tiene ni seis capítulos a la fecha así que tampoco esperen un análisis completo)

- Housekishou Richard-shi no Nazo Kantei (que se traduce algo así como “Los Archivos del Joyero Richard”)

Esta fue la primera sorpresa. Si bien al principio tenía toda la pinta de ser un anime sencillo que rayaba en lo simple y sin nada especial, es en realidad un recuentos de la vida bastante interesante de ver. Cada capítulo tiene pequeños misterios relacionados con joyas, los personajes son sencillos pero uno les toma cariño fácilmente, y aprendes una o dos cosas sobre gemas. Lleva tres capítulos apenas, pero es un anime muy bonito para ver, de esos que buscas cuando quieres relajarte.

- Runway de Waratte (“Sonríele a la Pasarela”)

Un drama de diseñadores, modelos y moda que, honestamente, aún no me convence del todo, principalmente por el contexto del mundo de la moda y las pasarelas, pero es de esos animes que relatan la historia de personas esforzándose por cumplir sus metas a pesar de todo, así que igual le estoy dando una oportunidad. Nada demasiado importante por aquí, lo consideraría un anime como Housekishou Richard-shi: de esos para ver cuando te quieres relajar. Hasta ahora el drama ha sido bastante moderado, pero ya veremos si se mantiene así o si se convierte en un drama total.

- Kyokou Suiri In/Spectre

Me llamó la atención desde que lo anunciaron y resulta ser bastante entretenido. Es algo así como un Natsume Yuujinchou macabro pero genial. La protagonista, Kotoko, es probablemente el punto más fuerte debido a su personalidad, pero el resto de personajes que han salido son igual de queribles. Eso sí: en sólo tres capítulos ha demostrado tener una habilidad para ir de 0 a 100 que no es normal. 

- Pet

Otra sorpresa de la temporada. Es bizarro, está muy enredado y está genial. Tiene un algo surrealista y distópico que me encanta, además de que la premisa y la manera en que lo desarrollan es muy interesante. No parece que vaya a tener muchos personajes, sino que será una trama con unos pocos, pero que son los justos para contar la historia que quieren. Esta temporada trae unos animes de misterio bastante buenos, y Pet es una de las recomendaciones que haría a cualquiera.

- ID:Invaded

Tenía muchas expectativas de éste, especialmente por que es un anime original, y no ha decepcionado para nada. Es de los mejores animes de misterio que he visto, sobre todo por la forma que presentan para resolver los misterios tan única e interesante, aunque algo difícil de entender al principio. La animación es muy buena, pero lo que resalta más es probablemente el soundtrack. Cada misterio que presentan es mejor que el anterior, y tiene un toque psicológico que me recuerda a Psycho-Pass pero menos extremo, diría yo. Sin duda uno de mis favoritos de esta temporada y una recomendación instantánea.

- Rikei ga Koi ni Ochita de Shoumei shitemita (“La ciencia se enamoró, así que intenté demostrarlo”)

Esta es la comedia romántica que necesitaba. Kaguya-sama: Love is War, que salió el año pasado, fue bastante bueno, pero personalmente me gusta más este anime. Es gracioso desde el comienzo, la pareja principal es adorable y de paso te enseña dos o tres cosas de matemáticas. Es algo así como Wotakoi, pero con cerebritos en vez de otakus, y tiene el tipo de comedia que me esperaba lo cual me alegra mucho. Honestamente, hacía tiempo que no me gustaba tanto una comedia romántica, así que es una brisa de aire fresco y es (creo) la única de la temporada, por lo que resalta más aún.

- Haikyuu!!: To the Top (“Haikyuu!!: Hacia la Cima”)

Ufff, qué ganas le tenía a esto. La cuarta temporada de Haikyuu por fin llegó, con un nuevo estilo menos áspero pero que mantiene la calidad de los movimientos, y con el soundtrack igual de bueno que siempre. Además, llegó justo cuando el manga entró en su arco final, por lo que hay muchos sentimientos encontrados al ver esta temporada, donde personajes muy relevantes aparecerán. Nada más que decir que espero con ansias los capítulos de los partidos.  

- Jibaku Shounen Hanako-kun (“Hanako-kun del Baño”)

Ufff, qué ganas le tenía a esto. Empecé a leer el manga cuando anunciaron el anime, y el anime ha superado mis expectativas. El estilo que le dieron a la animación es genial, los colores que usan son preciosos, y si de por sí el diseño de personajes del manga ya es muy bueno, los actores de voz que escogieron completan perfectamente la estética. No hay más que decir aparte de que este anime es precioso visualmente, y la historia que está por desarrollarse es incluso mejor. No sé hasta dónde animarán, pero supongo que será hasta el arco en donde sale Mitsuba… O tal vez lleguen hasta el arco del mundo ficticio (no sé cómo se llaman los arcos del manga sorry). Como sea, será fácilmente uno de mis favoritos de este año. 

 Y finalmente, dejando lo mejor para el final....

 - Eizouken ni wa Te wo Dasu na! (“¡Quita tus manos del Club de Cine”!)

Este anime será probablemente el mejor de esta temporada. Desde el diseño y la animación, pasando por los personajes y hasta la historia: no hay nada a criticar de este anime (por ahora). Así como Bakuman era un manga sobre cómo hacer manga, Eizouken es un anime sobre cómo hacer anime. No sé ni dónde comenzar con este anime porque todo es precioso y todo merece ser mencionado. El más recomendable de la temporada, la sorpresa más grande que me llevé y el mejor opening de todos, que ya se ha vuelto todo un meme. Véanlo. De veras, véanlo. Por fa. Es genial, lo prometo.

  … Y eso es todo, creo. Hay otros animes a mencionar, pero ninguno que se encuentre en mi lista para ver: 

Darwin’s Game no me llamó la atención lo suficiente como para verlo al ser un battle royal. Majustushi Orphen Hagure Tabi dicen que es muy bueno, pero no me enganché para nada con el primer capítulo y hasta me aburrió. Plunderer y Hatena Illusion parecían interesantes, pero no lo suficiente como para pasar por alto el hecho de que son ecchi. De Number24 y Somali to Mori no Kamisama vi el primer capítulo, pero tampoco me engancharon como para ver el siguiente, y todavía no he visto Dorohedoro.

winter anime 2020 part 6: it is fin(e)

Part 5 seems to have fallen into some sort of Tumblr memory hole (it’s not flagged and I know this because I have plenty of actually flagged posts, and people can see it just fine with direct links, but it doesn’t even show up in my own timeline), possibly because of screencaps of shota bulge. But that’s just Interspecies Reviewers, and I’m a honest dude with honest screencaps. You can find it here.

A3! Season Spring & Summer

Oh, P.A. Works. You never know whether you’re getting Dr. PA (Shirobako) or Mr. Works (Glasslip) with them. The last thing they did was most definitely a Mister production (since it was Fairy Gone), so maybe they’re up for some greatness again? In short, no. A3 isn’t dreadful, but it’s more reminiscent of the likes of HaruChika, so maybe an undergraduate at most. It’s more than a bit confusing but at the end of the day it seems to be about a girl that inherits a shitty theater house and now has to make the various boys that hang around in the vicinity do actor things. This is based on a mobile game of the otome persuasion and while I was sussing that out, I saw some people be very insistent that it's MOST DEFINITELY NOT A REVERSE HAREM. It must be some other genre of fiction that is all about one girl being surrounded by pretty boys all day then. Anyway, the main girl is alright, so it seems fairly watchable, but overall it’s just somewhat clunky and not of the highest quality, so I don’t think it’s for me.

ARP Backstage Pass

ARP is a boyband anime, remember those? It’s a really predictable one too - mostly just introductions of the characters, who are all the kinds of characters you might find in a boyband anime doing vaguely boybandish things. You know how these go. What’s funny though is how it looks, which is to say it looks painfully cheap. Not that that’s rare for boyband cash-in anime (I’ve covered the topic extensively), but ARP is unusual in that it has above average looking CG performance sequences too. In the end this makes it look like they had these fairly okay CG music videos already and thought “I know a guy, we’ll pay him 10bux and have him bang out some flimsy connective animation and then we can pretend we have a TV show.” A+ hustle if true.

Dorohedoro

The manga Dorohedoro is a fairly known quantity, and that’s a good thing too because fuck me if I have to explain what it is. Okay, what it IS is not hard to explain: It’s a surreal tone piece defined by a grimy punk-on-acid aesthetic and an irreverent and dark comedic tone mostly based on ultraviolence - what’s hard (and tedious, and beside the point) is to explain the narrative content, so I won’t. The line between lolrandom nonsense and on-point surrealism is very thin, and you need a ton of style to pull the latter off convincingly. Dorohedoro definitely manages to make it work so far, and the only thing I don’t like as far as style is concerned is that they do the main characters in CG. It’s not bad CG, but this is a show that’s particularly good-looking otherwise so it’s still a step down - though CG tends to hold up better when the looks deteriorate over the season, and MAPPA aren’t the most solid in that regard. Hey, at least with them you can count on a ballin’ OP and Dorohedoro definitely comes with one of those. It still makes very little sense, and going by the opinions of people who read it, this won’t change in the foreseeable future or possibly ever. As long as it keeps the style and the quirkiness coming, I don’t really mind.

Kyokou Suiri / In/Spectre

So I was pretty positive on the first episode of In/Spectre, in particular the way it escalates from people sitting on a bench talking about nothing to youkai hunt shenanigans. I also liked the main characters quite a lot and the chemistry between them even more. Still, a few doubts remained - it wasn’t very visually appealing, it’s obviously based on a very talky novel, and what it eventually ended up revealing is that it’s essentially just some modern edgy version of Gegege no Kitarou or the many, MANY imitators thereof. But so far, so good, seems like a winner.

Then I got to episode 2 and it was so excruciatingly bad that I dropped the whole show 20 minutes in because I couldn’t take it anymore. Episode 2 is 5 minutes of very stilted characters banter, followed by, no joke, 15 solid minutes of Kotoko reading a newspaper to a snake. It’s not particularly relevant or interesting news items either - apparently Exposition Shinbun does gangbusters in this universe. The lame direction doesn’t help with any of this, in the end it was the director of Endride after all. With my professional duty already fulfilled by this point and an episode that is a contender for worst episode of the season so far, I ain’t got time for this shit.

Natsunagu

Natsunagu is a short whose unique selling point is, and I quote, “the first over-the-air television anime produced by a local government that lasts one quarter of a year.” Thanks, Kumamoto Prefecture, that’s exactly my strike zone right there. Apart from that bit of hilarity, it’s quite alright I guess. There isn’t much to the first episode because it’s all of 3 minutes long and barely establishes the concept (girl goes to Kumamoto to find an internet acquaintance), but it looks nice and it has a smooth tone that goes down easy. Might just watch it to be able to say I did.

Runway de Waratte

Runway de Waratte is about a girl who wants to become a super, nay, hypermodel but is overly short, and a guy who wants to become a fashion designer but isn’t an asshole. You know, I’ve had some luck with fashion-based anime before, but Runway de Waratte is no Paradise Kiss. There, I said it. It doesn’t even have a Franz Ferdinand ED! Runway de Waratte is the most basic shounen take on the same material; while Paradise Kiss was about a bunch of weirdos and outcasts, this right here is about a rich girl who’s mad that she’s too short to get everything she wants for free, but makes up for it with trademark assertive shounen enthusiasm. Designerman is, of course, the sensitive type and the show thinks that makes it say something about gender roles, which is just adorable. Runway is also very peculiarly paced, to the degree that I’d say it does border on just plain badly written - there is so much time spent on establishing the characters in a vacuum (and they’re hardly complex), only to rush through the part where things actually start to happen during the end credits. And it’s a bizarre coincidence plot too. This is another show that isn’t fundamentally busted and borderline watchable, but would simply have to be significantly better for me to give it more chances.

Rikei ga Koi ni Ochita no de Shoumei shitemita

As someone who has been known to post charts about zettai ryouiki golden ratios and whatnot to social media with the comment “SCIENCE, BITCH”, I can’t really complain about this comedy in which science people attempt to get into romance but can only do so scientifically, graphs about chingrab angles etc included. Furthermore, I also think it’s more funny than not. Don’t expect too much from it, and in particularly don’t expect a show about ostensibly clever people to actually be clever itself. But I have an opinion about spicy romances between people trying to one-up each other, see #1 on this list for details. Of course, RgKnOndSs is nowhere near as good as Kaguya-sama, since it’s far more pedestrian and predictable, and it has some aspects that outright stink too; in particular, the obligatory interlude where science bear appears to badly explain some superficial science concepts is an annoying waste of time every time. Less bad but still not good are scientists #4 and #5, because they’re just very tired otaku clichees that I’ve seen a million times before. The main pair isn’t any less stereotypical, but at least a romantic comedy about them is news to me (no, fucking Steins;Gate does not count and even if it did, Okabe and Chris are tremendously unlikeable jerks with negative chemistry), and rounding out the cast is common sense girl that has common sense, which is probably necessary but not exactly innovative. In the end, this is a very minor production in all aspects, but Himuro’s incredibly dumb/adorable ponytail wag makes it worth watching. Q.E.D.
