Ryan W. Briggs, Max Marin, and Ellie Rushing at Philadelphia Inquirer:
BETHEL PARK, Pa. — In the sea of caps and gowns, Thomas Matthew Crooks hardly stood out. Few people clapped when his name was called. A YouTube video of his graduation two years ago from Bethel Park High School shows a slender and bespectacled student receiving his diploma with a soft smile. But the class of 2022 awoke Sunday to learn that the 20-year-old Allegheny County man was notorious, the shooter in the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump during a rally that left an ex-firefighter, Corey Comperatore, dead and two other attendees wounded. U.S. Secret Service counter-snipers killed Crooks moments after he opened fire on the Saturday night rally from a nearby rooftop. The FBI said Sunday they believed he acted alone. He had not been on the bureau’s radar.
Crooks’ actions shocked residents in his hometown, sparked countless conspiracy theories online, and prompted investigators to begin combing through every aspect of his life, looking for motive. The mystery has been fueled by a near-total absence of Crooks’ social media postings, political writings, or other digital fingerprints. Several former classmates appeared on national television Sunday, quickly casting Crooks as a stereotypical loner who was bullied heavily during his time at Bethel Park. One of them, Jason Kohler, told reporters Sunday that students tormented Crooks “almost every day” and that he often wore “hunting” outfits to class. “He was just an outcast,” Kohler said, “and you know how kids are nowadays.” Yet, two former students interviewed by The Inquirer disputed the characterization. They did not recall specific incidents of violence or other antagonism involving their now-infamous classmate in the community they described as generally tight-knit.
[...] The slight traces of public information Crooks left behind leave few clues about his political ideology. Federal campaign finance records show he made a $15 donation to progressive political action committee in 2021 after President Joe Biden’s election, but later registered as a Republican, according to Pennsylvania voter data. His father was a registered Libertarian, his mother a Democrat. Crooks’ body was found on the rooftop of an agricultural tool manufacturing plant a few hundred feet from the rally with an AR-style semiautomatic rifle — legally purchased by his father. The shooter was wearing a T-shirt promoting “The Demolition Ranch,” a YouTube channel for gun enthusiasts. If Crooks maintained any personal social media presence, it went largely undetected on Sunday. Discord, an instant messaging platform mainly used by video gamers, released a statement acknowledging Crooks held a “rarely utilized” account that contained no information relevant to the shooting.
Sigafoos did not recall Crooks making political overtures in class, but rather as someone interested in how government works, and “not trying to insert his own beliefs into it.” Another former classmate did not share this view. Max R. Smith recalled taking an American history course with Crooks as a sophomore. He did recall Crooks making political statements — but they shed no light on his actions Saturday. “He definitely was conservative,” he said. “It makes me wonder why he would carry out an assassination attempt on the conservative candidate.” Smith recalled a mock debate in which their history professor posed government policy questions and asked students to stand on one side of the classroom or the other to signal their support or opposition for a given proposal. “The majority of the class were on the liberal side, but Tom, no matter what, always stood his ground on the conservative side,” Smith said. “That’s still the picture I have of him. Just standing alone on one side while the rest of the class was on the other.”
The gunman who killed rallygoer Corey Comperatore and attempted the assassination of Donald Trump at Saturday night’s Butler, PA rally was not only a registered Republican but also a vehement conservative.
This should hopefully put an end to the right-wing’s nonsensical claim that a “violent leftist”/”Antifa” tried to kill Trump.

Archaeologists Uncover 5,000-Year-Old Wine in Egypt
A new discovery has been made by an archaeological team from Egypt, Germany, and Austria working in Upper Egypt. They found some 5,000-year-old wine inside sealed jars that had never been opened.
This discovery was made in Queen Merneith’s tomb in Abydos, Sohag. In addition to the ancient wine, the team also found furniture that was used for funerals.
Mostafa Waziri, who is the Secretary General of the Supreme Council of Antiquities, shared on Sunday that these old jars are big and in good condition.
Dietrich Raue, who is the Director of the German Archaeological Institute, added that the team also found out more about the life of the ancient queen and the time she ruled.
When they looked at the writings on one of the tablets found in the tomb, they discovered that Queen Merneith had a significant role. She was in charge of important government offices, explained Dietrich Raue.
Raue also mentioned that the team is still working diligently to find out more about this enigmatic queen’s life.
Christiana Kohler, who leads the mission, revealed that their research into the tomb has revealed that it was constructed using materials like raw bricks, clay, and wooden planks.
Kohler pointed out that Queen Merneith’s royal tomb in Abydos is possibly the only one from the First Dynasty that has been found up to this point.
“This observation, together with other evidence, radically challenges the oft-proposed but unproven idea of ritual human sacrifice in the 1st Dynasty,” Kohler stated.
Additionally, she mentioned that there are 41 tombs near the queen’s tomb, which belong to her advisors and servants. Queen Merneith was the first female pharaoh
There’s evidence to suggest that Queen Merneith might have been a ruler of Egypt on her own. This idea is based on official records.
If this turns out to be true, and the earlier royal wife, Neithhotep, didn’t rule independently, then Merneith could be considered the first female pharaoh and the earliest queen who ruled on her own in recorded history. She governed around 2950 BC for a period that we’re not sure about, according to Wikipedia.
Merneith’s name, which means “Beloved by Neith,” has symbols related to the ancient Egyptian deity Neith on her stele. She might have been the daughter of Djer and likely the senior wife of Djet.
Being Djer’s daughter would make her the great-granddaughter of Narmer, the first pharaoh to unite Egypt. She was also the mother of Den, who succeeded her as ruler.

The Journey So Far
It had only been less than two weeks since Saedre finally arrived at her destination in the southernmost area of the Azure Span. Through misty forests and along the fringe of icy tundra, the journey to the Azure Archives on foot was a treacherous one with landscape alone. Adding the conflict deep within these lands of dragonkind to the mix only made it all the more challenging and not to mention, her troubles with her familiar, Aveem.
In truth, Saedre was never meant to make this journey alone. It was to her surprise that she had reconnected with Mason Kohler at the encampment within the Waking Shores, where he had quickly volunteered his assistance to her plight with Aveem’s troubling malfunctions. After all the two had been through in the time that had passed since they had last seen one another, she supposed she couldn’t really find herself surprised by his enthusiasm to aid her; just as was his nature in general and simply their relationship over the years.
And what of their relationship? That was turning out to be pretty damned challenging now and she didn’t really have time to think about that. No matter what feelings churned within her once more when seeing him again, the lid containing them must remain in place. Besides, it didn't seem like either of them were in a place to actually touch upon that subject yet.
Managing to avoid the more heavily impacted areas of conflict at first, it was once the two had reached the Ohn'ahran plains when they had found themselves separated. After hours of grueling tests meant to prove their merit to a small tribe of centaur they encountered, the two barely had a moment to truly rest at the camp before they found themselves caught up in an unexpected attack launched by primalist allied centaur on their newfound allies.
Overwhelmed by their forces, Saedre and Mason were somehow separated in their retreat when she had fallen behind, swept up in a small group of centaur moving the opposite direction when they scattered. Since then, there had been no word on Mason’s whereabouts even though she had tried to find him after the dust had settled. Scouts were able to confirm he was not among the fallen and so, it was with a heavy heart that Saedre made the reluctant decision a week later to continue on with her journey to the Azure Span where she sought the aid of the blue dragons on Aveem’s troubling issues. There was at least some hope that maybe Mason might find his way there as well since the two shared the destination.
“It is pointless to linger behind,” Remret plainly stated to her; one of the centaurs she managed to escape with. “My people know these lands better than any, so if anyone can find the human, it is us. You would only get in our way.”
Saedre huffed softly under her breath as she recalled the centaur’s harsh words and continued to watch the snow fall outside of her window. Nearly two weeks since her arrival to the Azure Archives and still not even a whisper of Mason’s whereabouts. Not even Aveem could assist her as the familiar had been in keen observation under the eye of Zifangosa; the blue dragon who reluctantly agreed to aid the elf.
“If patience is all I have to see me through, then so be it then,” she muttered in the tone of one who very much lacked that virtue at this point in time. If anything, she needed to keep herself busy and so, that is just what she would do.
@masonkohler for mentions.

How his moods altered like the spring weather: the showers following fast on a sunny day, greeting her with his generous smile, speaking love with his dark eyes, pressing her hand, lauding her facility with words often leaving little gifts in her desk: a small, dew-damp bouquet of wildflowers, a book blooming magically between a dull dictionary and a worn-out grammar, or some little sweet pastry nestled unexpectedly in the lap of a dull assignment.

Why There's No Bartosz in the Origin World: A Calculated Infodump
So I know there were a few people who were upset about the fact that Aleksander and Regina's relationship didn't make it to the Origin World despite both of them still existing without time travel. I've also seen some people who said they felt bad for Bartosz because he didn't make it to the Origin World even though his birth wasn't the result of time travel. But after some careful consideration (read: hyperfixation go brrrr), I think I've come to a fairly logical conclusion about why this is the case. Originally, I thought that Aleksander and Regina only met because Aleksander pulled a gun on Ulrich to stop him from bullying Regina, and that event no longer happens with Ulrich out of existence. But there's more than that, and in this essay I will here is my explanation.
In season 2, when Clausen is interrogating Aleksander about the disappearance of his brother, the real Aleksander Kohler, he mentions that his brother disappeared "without a trace. Nothing." When someone in Dark disappears without a trace, nothing, we can pretty safely assume that time travel is to blame. Clausen assumes that his brother is dead and suspects "Aleksander" (Boris) of being the guilty party, but the disappearance happened in Marburg, not Winden, so we don't see it play out. It could be a Mikkel situation (taking on a new identity and a new life in a different time), or a Mads/Erik/Yasin situation (he just died and his body was dumped God knows when).
The letter that Clausen receives tipping him off about travelling to Winden to get answers about his brother's disappearance would at this point likely be presumed to have been written by Claudia. But after the events of season 3, it's much more likely to have been written by The Unknown, for 3 main reasons:
First, it includes the same quote ("he who has eyes to see and ears to hear...") that The Unknown says to Gustav Tannhaus before murdering him in 1888,
second, the handwriting on the letter matches the handwriting used by The Unknown when he writes the notebook,
and third, the motherfucker knows everything. Everything about what happens in both worlds, at every time, and is constantly catapulting between timelines murdering everyone in his way to make sure those events keep happening. (Though it remains unclear whether or not he knew there was a third world.)
So with this information under our belts, there's a pretty strong theory that The Unknown fabricated the Marburg incident to look like a murder and to make Boris Niewald look like the guilty party, which would lead to the following chain of events: Boris changes his name to Aleksander > he flees his past and comes to Winden > he meets Regina > the two of them get married and have Bartosz.
Keeping Bartosz in existence definitely would've been in The Unknown's best interest as Bartosz needed to produce Noah, the perpetrator of many of the Adam's World disappearances, and Agnes, who the Unknown would get with in both worlds to produce Tronte, and the Nielsen loop would continue.
So ultimately, in a world without time travel, Aleksander Kohler never disappeared, and the other events subsequently didn't occur. Boris Niewald never changed his name, he never fled to Winden, he never met Regina....and they never had Bartosz. (Yes, the writers could've come up with another reason for Boris to come to Winden and meet Regina which could've yielded Regina Niewald and Bartosz Niewald, but based on the way everything was set up, it would've required an explanation and I'm not sure such an explanation could fit into the dinner scene without being hamfisted).
I won't lie, I was pretty sad about losing Bartosz as he was my second favourite character behind Claudia (who thankfully made it), and he was the one member of the teen generation I really thought would survive. But if you can come up with a way for him to still exist, by all means, write a fix-it fic. That's what they're for. (Some good examples can be found in this post by @haljathefangirlcat)

Starting in 1982, Marvel Comics began a line of graphic novels and trade paperbacks aimed at adults. This venture vanished in 1993, but Marvel resurrected it 20 years later in in 2013. While DC is better known for its mature comic collections, both the first and the second generation of Marvel Graphic Novels have some gems shining in their vaults.
Marvel Graphic Novels feature dozens of different characters, from obscure figures, like Marada the She-Wolf, to some Marvel fan favorites like Thanos. To their credit, they encompass nearly every genre, from fantasy to noir crime thrillers to pure superhero fiction. These graphic novels are inarguably the best of Marvel's bunch.
10: Marada the She-Wolf Is Underrated
The daughter of Caesar's firstborn daughter and a princess turned slave, Marada Starhair is a legendary warrior with arcane powers and weaponry expertise. A collection of stories from Marvel's Epic Illustrated, Marada the She-Wolf follows her adventures throughout the Roman Empire, combining the sensibilities of Conan stories with a Heavy Metal art style that still holds up today.
Marada is one of Marvel's most obscure heroes but Marada the She-Wolf is one of the greatest graphic novels of its era. John Bolton's art is truly marvelous and it goes great with Claremont's fantastic take on this character. While Marvel has a long history with sword-and-sorcery characters like Conan and Red Sonja, Marada is their long-neglected sibling and this book shows off her many merits.
9: The Pitt Is Weirdly Realistic
By focusing on three different characters -- Nelson Kohler, Colonel Browning, and Professor Jenny Swensen -- Byrne and Gruenwald did a terrific job at conveying the powerlessness of this kind of disaster in The Pitt. This graphic novel is a gruesome story with emotional dialogues and plenty of dark panels. The Pitt is perfect for those who want to read something serious with a true-to-life take on superheroes' actions.
8: Daredevil/Black Widow: Abattoir Is a Great Thriller
Starlin's Daredevil/Black Widow: Abattoir is a noir crime graphic novel featuring two of the darkest Marvel superheroes. When Black Widow disappears during a serial killer investigation that put her on the radar of a sadistic telepath. Daredevil will have to find her before she becomes their next victim.
Daredevil/Black Widow: Abattoir has great art, a story full of epic twists and turns, and an incredible team-up. This story takes the reader by the hand into a full thriller from Daredevil's perspective and his thoughts only make things darker. Chiodo's blurry lines and soft colors add to its cinematography. Daredevil and Black Widow make for an uncommon pairing -- especially post-MCU. However, Abattoir proves that they deserve more projects together.
7: Fans Will Love Kingpin in Daredevil: Love and War
In order to save Vanessa from a mysterious illness, Wilson Fisk kidnaps the wife of a doctor, forcing him to work for him. In the meanwhile, Daredevil tries to find them. Daredevil: Love and War follows this race from the perspective of Kingpin, offering readers an interesting insight into the villain's mind, turning him into a sympathetic villain.
By focusing on Fisk's perspective, Miller paints the pathetic picture of a desperate man in love, which almost makes readers believe that Daredevil is in the wrong for trying to stop him. This kind of emotional complexity in a villain is exactly what graphic novel readers want to see.
6: Doctor Strange & Doctor Doom: Triumph and Torment Features a Rare but Interesting Team-Up
Doctor Strange & Doctor Doom: Triumph and Torment follows an uncommon team-up. Doctor Doom and Doctor Strange join forces to free the former's mother from the most diabolic Hell forces. The first step of their quest is to travel to Mephisto's Infernal realm, where their souls will change forever -- including a tear-jerking ending.
Doctor Strange & Doctor Doom: Triumph and Torment is basically a Marvel buddy film plus pumped full of a spooky atmosphere and heavy lore -- especially since Doctor Strange, Doctor Doom, and Mephisto are all lore-heavy characters. Its unique premise makes it stand out from other graphic novels, as well as the masterful way in which it interconnects the three characters' backgrounds.
5: Amazing Spider-Man: Hooky Is Great for All Ages
Amazing Spider-Man: Hooky pits Spider-Man against a monstrous villain, Tordenkakerlakk. This beast, created by Kurudred the Blood Drinker, only gets stronger each time Spidey defeats it. Given this, it slowly and steadily becomes one of his biggest challenges yet.
For Amazing Spider-Man: Hooky, Spider-Man travels to a fantasy realm. This makes Hooky very different from most of Spidey's stories. However, that's exactly what makes it great. It's quirky, it's full of magic, and it's quite unpredictable. Since Spider-Man teams up with Marandi Sjorokker, a 12-year-old sorcerer, this novel is a great option for kids too.
4: Claremont Did a Terrific Job With X-Men: God Loves, Man Kills
X-Men: God Loves, Man Kills follows the fight between Reverend William Stryker, a mutant-hating preacher who killed his own son, and Magneto, who is investigating Stryker's crime. After Stryker kidnaps Professor X to use him as a catalyst for a mutant massacre, Magneto teams up with the X-Men to save him. Since X-Men: God Loves, Man Kills was written in the '80s, amidst the rise of televangelists, this comic delves into some uncomfortable truths.
X-Men: God Loves, Man Kills premise is simple, but it's a great tale about anti-mutant prejudice. Stryker is a terrific villain and the Magneto/X-Men team-up opens the door for any possible plot twist. Claremont understands his X-Men perfectly. Originally an outside-of-canon graphic novel, X-Men: God Loves, Man Kills became canon following 2003's X-2. Since then, it's been a central story for X-Men at least in popular culture.
3: Amazing Spider-Man: Family Business Has Great Pace
One of the most iconic Spider-Man stories ever, Amazing Spider-Man: Family Business sees Spider-Man learn about his own past at the same time as the reader. When he becomes the target of Kingpin's most recent plan, CIA agent Teresa Parker, aka his own sister, will become Peter's most important ally.
Amazing Spider-Man: Family Business stands out from other Spidey graphic novels because it has great cinematographic quality. It basically puts Spidey into a Bond-like mission, which is a change of pace for this character. Regardless, it works perfectly. Gabriel Dell' Otto and Werther Dell'Edera's art is amazing too, as it definitely keeps up with the narrative dynamic vibe.
2: Avengers: Rage of Ultron Explores Serious Topics
Titan falls and Ultron rises by taking control of the whole planet. In order to fix this, Starfox contacts the Avengers. When Starfox seeks the Avengers' help, he finds them in the middle of an ethical conflict due to Hank Pym's use of AI in his experiments.
Ultron as a whole planet -- possessing its inhabitants, even -- puts the Avengers in a true problem due to the scale of the villain. The battle against Planet Ultron makes for a thrilling story. By combining it with the complex discourse of the novel -- fatherhood, artificial intelligence, ethics --, Remender offers one of the best Avengers storylines ever.
1: The Death of Captain Marvel Is Incredibly Emotional
The Death of Captain Marvel follows Captain Marvel's fight against Nitro, a battle in which he gets cancer. The comic features this fight, as well as the aftermath, in which Mar-Vell dies due to this illness, surrounded by all his friends and allies, such as the Fantastic Four, the X-Men, and the Avengers.
Marvel's first graphic novel ever is also its best work. The Death of Captain Marvel is an emotional ride. It starts as an action-packed romp, allowing Mar-Vell to showcase all his abilities. However, it soon turns into a sad, realistic take on a terrible illness. Captain Marvel's death was such an important milestone, so much so that -- contrary to most heroes in this universe -- Mar-Vell hasn't returned from the death yet.
