i have over 2,000 hours in skyrim and im just now learning you can tell all of the companions about skjor's death ??? have you always been able to ??? this is sad hello ??

first impression: Another wise old mentor.

impression now: Not so wise. He's retreated into a shell and lets Aela and Skjor throw their weight around too much while he ponders his immortal destiny. This may be the result of some game development weirdness. The Prima Skyrim game guide says he contracted the Rot and his condition is going downhill quickly. If we accept he's ill and weakening in his room, that would explain a lot. (Though, can werewolves contract the rot?)

favourite moment: The chilling account of his dream in his dialogue, of being dragged away from Sovngarde.

idea for a story: Not explored at all in game, it's intriguing to me whatever is going on between Vignar and Kodlak, who are both old school members of the Companions, steeped in the old lore and history. Vignar has stayed out of the werewolf stuff and the Circle, and Kodlak hasn't. Vignar has chosen a side in political landscape of Skyrim and Kodlak stays neutral. Kodlak welcomes you into the Companions. Vignar suggests you don't get involved with them.

Does Vignar know about the werewolves? He's been around a long time, albeit with a career away from Whiterun in the Legion for years. This would be a fascinating relationship to flesh out. All we have in game is that Kodlak's ghost says, "You see only me because your heart knows only me as the Companions leader. I'd wager old Vignar could see half a dozen of my predecessors."

I don't know exactly what tack I'd take with them, but there's meat for a story there.

unpopular opinion: Well, I already said in my Athis ask that the Circle are incredibly selfish and Kodlak took part in that farce of a honourable tradition for a long while. I wonder if he feels guilty about how deceived his fellow warriors, as well as guilty about the taint on his soul.

Killing the Glenmoril witches to save your soul from a deal you yourself made with Hircine is morally questionable, to say the least. Maybe they were also an incredibly evil threat that needed killing, but the game doesn't go into it. I don't btw think this is bad characterization, I do like the desperation as time runs out.

favourite relationship: Vilkas and Kodlak's trust is touching.

favourite headcanon: He knew Krev the Skinner once.

So you all know when you do the Companions quest line, you eventually attend Kodlak's funeral? Well I had Serana as a permanent follower during this because I had yet to take her to her family's home. If any of you are familiar with Serana, you'll know she likes to use things in the surrounding area if she has to wait for even 3 seconds... so naturally, during Kodlak's funeral she decided to use the sky forge... where they were burning him. Talk about adding fuel to the fire. Damn vamp wanted to make sure that wolf was extra crispy.

No disrespect to either Kodlak or Serana. I love them both but that shit was funny to me 🤣

Headcanons

Jorrvaskr is a two-three level house (the roof is still the shape of a ship, because that’s cool), and the ground level functions as a gym.

Kodlak is the manager of said gym

Although most people are insecure about going there to work out because most of the companions are so buff that it makes them flustered 😭 i mean c’mon, there is a member called Njada Stonearms, and I think that says a lot about her

The gym has one part where you can work out with modern equipment and one part where you can train yourself with weapons

The Skyforge is still there, untouched, and it’s a pretty famous tourist destination.

You can either buy really expensive weapons (expect maybe if you are a friend of him or if you’re a member of the Companions) or less expensive small merchandise, maybe a nice ring or a cute keychain

The Underforge is probably cleaner than most members’ rooms

Sometimes the Companions do demonstrations for the tourists (even if some of the members cough cough Vilkas cough cough are salty about it), or for the kids during different festivals, city days, etc

They show either cool fighting choreographies or cool tricks to the audience and sometimes ask kids to help them with their performance (mostly Lucia because she is an orphan)

The sewer system is crazy in Whiterun. It’s like New York’s, except here you don’t find ninja turtles, you find warrior werewolves

They are hairy

You can’t just ask them to shave because it would just regrow in like 5 hours

I think maybe their androgenic hair grows slower, so that’s why they can shave and maintain a stubble instead of a beard

Or they just shave every morning and night

And they don’t have nails; they have literal claws

Because lycanthropy causes keratin to grow faster? Or concentrate more? Like their hair is also very thick

So the members always carry a nail file with them

The Vigilants of Stendarr sometimes get canceled because a lot of members are close-minded and want to hunt them down? Okay, not every member; some of them let the werewolves go free if they saw them only hurting like bandits and such

The companions either wear gym clothes or armor. No inbetweens.

And Kodlak is like a very muscular grandpa.
