Thinking about Sidon and how old he might be, there are actually a couple of clues in Breath of the Wild.

Link's childhood friends from Zora's Domain remember him very clearly even though it was over 100 years ago:

"We used to swim together when I was but a child... Remember? Well, it has been 100 years since then. And now I'm over 130 years old."

"What is the Big Bad Bazz Brigade password? Fluffy white clouds! Clear blue...[Zora] [...] The only people who know that password are members of the Big Bad Bazz Brigade!

"We...used to play together all the time."

Sidon, on the other hand, only has a fuzzy recollection:

"I recently remembered something...a fuzzy memory from my early childhood. There was a swordsman that came by every so often and spent a considerable amount of time with Mipha."

Rivan states that he was a child when he, Bazz, Gaddison and Link all played together as part of the Big Bad Bazz Brigade while Sidon says he recalls a "swordsman" in his early childhood.

Link was skilled with a sword from a young age and Bazz mentions that Link taught him sword fighting, but to call a Hylian child of 4 a "swordsman" is quite a stretch. Therefore, he must be recalling Link after he had the Master Sword when he would visit Mipha which was at least 3 times according to her diary since he acquired the sword.

Also Link must have been part of Bazz's brigade when he was a child because he did not visit the domain so often after getting the Sword according to Mipha's diary which states that it was ages between two visits. Sidon also recalls that Link spent so much time with Mipha when he was there that he felt Link was stealing Mipha away from him, so Link wasn't running around with Zora children saying things like "fluffy white clouds, clear blue Zora" when his responsibility as the chosen hero was heavy on his shoulders. Link was skilled in combat since he was 4, so he likely trained with Bazz while they were both kids as well since he had more time and freedom to do it then rather than later.

Therefore I assume that Rivan, Bazz and Gaddison were all part of the same generation along with Mipha and Kodah (another one who knows Link from his time in the domain), so I don't think it is a stretch to assume that they would be of similar ages.

In my previous post about Zora lifespans and ages, I used the developer note for Paya's age to determine Link's age since she was made to be around his age: 18-20 years old. We know Link is at least 17 and born before Zelda because he ascends Mt. Lanayru with Zelda on her 17th birthday, and only those of 17 or older may ascend the mountain.

I also determined that the Zora may grow at half the rate of Hylians, so 40 years old would be about the same development stage as a Hylian at 20 years old. Mipha, who is an adolescent actively growing to full size as she was never considered unusually small for a Zora, would have been a similar development age to Hylians of 15-17.5 years old which places her around Zelda developmental age at the time of her death which falls in line with what Urbosa says about her, Zelda, Link and Revali:

"Zelda, Revali, Mipha, and Link are so young. They are Hyrule's future. Daruk and I hope to help them see that future."

I placed Link at 19 years old in my last post simply because it was right in the middle of Paya's age range, so I'll use that number again to simplify my math since him at age 4 would have been a nice 15 years before the Calamity.

If Mipha was at least 30 but no older than Rivan whom I considered about 35 at the time of the Calamity, then she would have been 15-20 years old when Link was 4 assuming that he is 19 at the time of the Calamity.

This means that Zora like Rivan can recall things 100 years ago when the are around 20 years old, so Sidon would have had to have been younger when he saw Link in the time leading up to the Calamity.

If Sidon was born around the time that Link first came to the domain, then he would have been old enough to remember Link around the time of the Calamity. Even if Link was 17, Sidon would have been 13 when the Calamity struck. If Link was 19 then Sidon would have been 15.

Therefore I think placing him at about 10 years old when the Calamity struck would be more likely as that would be the equivalent to a Hylian of 5 years old which would be well within an age of fuzzy recollection.

The elephant in the room is Mipha and Sidon's mother who is never mentioned even once. We know that Zora hatch from eggs because Muzu makes a reference to "hatchlings", so whatever happened to Sidon's mother could have been from even before he hatched.

If Mipha did write about her mother or her brother's birth in her diary, it would not be unexpected that the paper pages were damaged by water in the domain while it was lost for 100 years. It's surprising that her paper diary could have survived at all in the Zora's Domain—I wonder where she left it...

[edit] actually Mipha's mother is mentioned once on one of the Zora monuments about Mipha's birth, but there is no mention of what happened to her or when Sidon was born.

Anyway...I think it would make sense that Sidon was about 10 years old and vaguely recalls Link when he would visit Mipha. This is very speculative of course—all that we know for certain is that Rivan is over 130 years old and recalls when he and Link swam together as kids but Sidon cannot recall Link very much at all 100 years ago.

I cried. It was dumb. And now we’re supposed to get ice tomorrow and I���m driving the ambulance in that nonsense. The weather and I are not coordinating well, lol.

Mipha is trying out a hot spring for the first time and almost gets scared of her wits because Cloud and Zel are nearby

Fierce, Abel, and Rusl are tracking Yiga but Fierce is about to throw that out the window in lieu of something he deems more immediately important

The reunion of Big Bad Bazz Brigade (and Sidon) I wrote a few words about how each of them works in the group in this particular story. From Bazz's perspective though, so who's to say how truthful those observations are. Typed transcript of my scribbles under the cut:

Captain Bazz's very annoying friend group, as explained by Bazz. So no objectivity at all. Bazz: One sane man (or so he'd like to bielieve) Full of sufferig.

Rivan: Too pretty for his own good. Firmly holds the record of "most bad decisions taken in a lifetime". Direct cause of roughly 80% of Bazz's problems. No concept of personal space. The only truly good person at this table.

Gaddison: Firm believer in "violence is always the answer". Annoyingly observant but refusing to use this power for good. Stupidly strong. Stupidly gay. Sadly, -not- stupid.

Link: Chaos incarnate, no perception of long time consequences of his actions. Weirdly, the best person to turn to for some hones heart-to-heart. Both a teenager and a 120yo at the same time, with all the emotional pitfalls of it.

Sidon: Bazz's boss, Prince, adopted ypunger sibling (in a way) and old friend all at once. Maybe even more. It's complicated. Annoyingly confilict avoidant, desperate to keep everyone happy. Smitten.

Other people Bazz considers his friends, but aren't part of the gang: Kodah, Kayden, Jiahto ---

Of course I have so much more to say about every one of them, and the descriptions vary wildly, based on whose pov we choose to assume. They are all in some ways terrible and problematic, full of various traumas, but also friends who try to do their best. Such is life. There also is a story behind all of it, obviously. I don't know if I'll ever end up publishing the pages upon pages of comics I have about those guys, since it'd require loads of editing and rewrites, and i don't have this kind of time. But on the off chance I will, I want the personalities to be revealed in this way instead of big headcanon dumps. It's more fun this way.

It was still damp from her great dive from the island above. “If even you and your friends could not stop him for good…King Rauru, my magic has been greatly weakened, the Master Sword is shattered and you say Link is still ill from the gloom.” 

She thought of the painted chamber, the gigantic murals, full of bold colours and gems. She remembered the titanic form of the Demon King and his army of monsters (and people! People had sided with him!) sweeping across Hyrule, the mural coloured with so much red. He’d been grinning. He’d looked excited, like it was all tremendous fun. And the mural of Rauru and his team…The Sage of Light, the Sage of Spirit, the Sage of Wind, the Sage of Lightning, the Sage of Fire, the Sage of Water, the Sage of Time. A whole team had not been enough to kill the Demon King. Rauru had to seal him. The seal was broken. What could she do? 

“You have the Triforce of Wisdom,” Rauru said. “As well as Hylia’s Golden Power. I have been informed the Master Sword can heal itself? That was what my dear Sonia told me, when she first told me tales of the sword. When I asked Link he confirmed it. Do you have a team of your own?” He asked the question as if he already knew the answer. Perhaps he did. 

The Big Bad Bazz Brigade. Kaneli once called them The Champions Reborn. Mayor Reede called them all living legends. 

Link, Sidon, Bazz, Rivan, Yuki. Fi. Yona, Gaddison, Kayden, Kodah, Torefeau. Dorephan and Muzu. Impa, Paya, Purah, Robbie, Josha, Jerrin, Granté. Dorian and Cado. Riju, Buliara, Barta, Vilia. Hudson, Bolson, Karson, Rhondson. Teba, Saki, Harth, Kaneli, Tulin, Molli. Yunobo, Bludo. Beedle. Cece, Sophie. The Deku Tree, Hestu, Ivy and Skull Kid. 

They were not all warriors. Tulin and Molli were not even teenagers yet. But they were family. They were all dear, brave, amazing friends. 

Yes, Zelda had quite the team indeed.

Joined by Rauru, her ghostly ancestor, Zelda explores the Great Sky Island and visits its shrines. Gifted mysterious Lights of Blessing and Zonai abilities, her magic grows for the first time in years. Finally, she can enter the Temple of Time.

Unfortunately, the temple leaves her with more questions and fears. The chief among them: where, exactly, is Link?

Finally got the Zora domain (my favorite domain)quest moving after being distracted for 30 hours. My thoughts on my precious Zora fam:

- I’m still hurt that Bazz didn’t recognize me when I freed him. I thought we had something special.

- Kodah is still best Zora girl after Mipha. I love that she doesn’t try to keep referring to Link formally and reverts back to Linny.

- Muzu still a bitch

- Yona isn’t bad. You guys are just mean. ( Plus I’m a multishipper. Nothing can get in the way of your ship if you have more than one.)

- Sidon’s still perfect and I love him.

- So glad King Dorephan is still alive. I was so scared when I got there and didn’t see him.

The zora domain always makes me feel at home. The Zora are so warm to Link. I love to see it.

Link Character Analysis Pt. 1

Child Link

Just as a little note here, by “Child Link” I am talking about the child version of Link from BOTW

What was he like?

Unfortunately, we don’t know much about Child Link in game besides what we learn from the Mipha memory and Mipha’s Diary (BOTW DLC):

- He’s described as “curious and full of energy with a ready smile”

- Has “exceptional swordsmanship” only at “about 4 years of age”! AND he was literally going against adult knights and even beat them! Why that was allowed, I’ll get to that later…

- He’s very impressed by magic!

Where did he live?

Ok. This one’s an unpopular opinion for some people but here’s what I found.

- According to Creating a Champion (pg. 376) , Link had likely started his childhood in Hateno Village.

- HOWEVER, also according to Mipha’s Diary, the KING sent a group of knights to the Zora Domain. The same group of knights that Child Link was with. MEANING that even though Link may have at least been born in Hateno Village, he must’ve ended up in Castle Town, where he spent the rest of his childhood, gaining traction as a gifted swordsman.

Link’s Family

I may be cheating a little on this one, but by also looking at past Zelda games, I can kind of piece together what his family is like.

- In Memory #11 (Shelter From the Storm), Zelda makes the first mention, probably in Zelda game history, of Link’s father who was a knight.

- Although I’m sure Zelda was talking about Link when she gives the comment “Your commitment to the training necessary to fulfill your goal is really quite admirable,” I think she was also still comparing Link to his Father’s journey of becoming a knight. According to Creating a Champion, Link is NOT of nobility. And unlike all the “likelys” and “maybes” that this book says about most of Link’s past, this information is for certain. Therefore, Link’s father would have had to work HARD to rise the ranks to be personally asked by the King to go to the Zora Domain with the other Hyrulian knights with him.

- Strangely enough, just a few paragraphs before this, Link is said to be born into a line of knights. These could also probably have been Hateno knights too

- This is the point where I’m slightly cheating. In the Japanese version of Creating a Champion, there’s a whole TWO PAGES of concept art that us English speakers are missing out on. 😔 On one of those pages, we can see an image of a (what looks like) 12 year old Link with an older man and a little girl. The man may look older than a father but, after what Zelda said, this can likely be Link’s Father!

- And the little girl would likely be Link’s little sister! Unfortunately, there’s no evidence in the game that Link had a little sister, but after looking at the Wind Waker game for reference, I have a feeling this girl is supposed to be BOTW’s version of Aryll. She even looks like she loves Cucco’s while Aryll in Wind Waker loves seagulls! I could go on about what this means for Link and his backstory, but then that would be touching “spoiler territory” for my duology, and I don’t want to do that just yet!

Link’s Childhood Friends

Most of Link’s friends that are mentioned in game are actually Zora! Although I’m sure he had some Hylian friends as well.

- Bazz: Was the leader of the Big Bad Bazz Brigade (BBBB). Link trained him sword fighting (or at least the “art of the blade”).

- Rivan: him and Link used to swim together when they were kids. Also a part of the BBBB

- Gaddison: her and Link used to play together as kids. She was also part of the BBBB, known as the heroine.

- Mipha: she used to heal Link whenever he would get hurt in training.

I’m not adding Kodah to the list because (I assume!) she didn’t “befriend” him until he was older

unfortunately I can't find a clip of Bazz talking about the BBBB, but believe me that it's in the game!
