Notes from Kjell...
My favourite piece at this exhibition was an installation - Arsenal, a store room with shelves from floor to ceiling, with drawers some half opened and some items, oldish children’s playthings and some books of lead, a lot of different things. Some curled labels were stuck on. The light in the room was weak and it was almost like dusty spiderweb was creeping out of the corners. It was a narrow room. I suppose nobody can leave that room without some thoughts…

Q&A
Kjell on Anselm Kiefer
After visiting the “Walhalla” exhibition at the White Cube, London
Kiefer’s artistic language I feel I can understand. I don’t always have to study his pieces in detail. It is more like I catch the “atmosphere”. I don’t know for sure if my ideas are the same as the artist had. That doesn’t matter, I surely get some ideas! I suppose nobody can leave that room without some thoughts… Enriching art it was!  I had an emotional reaction to the room - it is the impression that is important, not the intellectual, detailed exploration.

Kjell’s reaction to the recent political changes...
Is the recent political changes effecting your work in any way?
As most people I have big worries about the situation in the world. May goes to Washington as Chamberlain went to Berlin? And I absolutely don’t like it! Maybe this background is why Kiefer spoke so directly to me this time?  All of a sudden, anything seemed possible. I am concerned about what might happen if people do not speak up and act now, before too much damage is done.

Q&A
Kjell talking about his Symphony series
Q. Kjell, what drove you to create paintings inspired by Beethoven’s Nine Symphonies?
A.  When I realised that I could convert audio inspiration into my painting work, I thought of "painting" a couple of my favorite symphonies. Years went by until I felt ready for this project. And then I decided to make one painting for each of the Nine Symphonies.
