Haven’t seen the movie itself but here’s one fun fact: the movie protagonist’s name (Nagiko) most likely is a reference to 淸原諾子 Kiyohara no Nagiko which is the purported true name of 淸少納󠄁言 Sei Shōnagon—the authoress of an essay collection called… The Pillow Book (枕草子 Makura no sōshi).

The Pillow Book Directed By: Peter Greenaway (1996)

Maison Martin Margiela was a costume designer for the pillow book, the film tells a woman (Nagiko) with a body writing obsession where ones life story is written or calligraphed on the skin. Nagiko grows up she finds a powerful link between calligraphy, human flesh, poetry, and sexuality.

秀才 vs 天才 (Heian Caster Quartet)

Interesting tweet by a JP peep who commented that in Murasaki’s own eyes, she was just 秀才 while Sei Shounagon would be 天才 . The best translation I could muster for this would be Murasaki is merely “brilliant” while Sei Shounagon is a genius. Of course, some academics would likely argue that the author of Tale of Genji is most definitely a genius and may even be brighter than Sei but the FGO Murasaki not only idolizes Sei Shounagon but (accurate to her “portrayal” in her diary) can be quite negative on herself. Those same feelings of inadequacy could also describe the feelings Douman would eventually feel towards Seimei. However in this case Douman came first and would eventually be ruined by his own jealous (along with Seimei) while Murasaki arrived after Sei’s time in court. While Douman was also a genius, Seimei would be a prodigy like no other in regards to onmyodo. These negative feelings are part of what drive a wedge into both pairs’ respective relationships.

In regards to Seimei and Nagiko, we don’t know too much about Seimei but we do know that until the very end Seimei seemed to refuse to recognize Limbo as Douman and had hoped to be able to save his former rival from his monstrous descent. In parallel, despite seeing probably the “worst” of Murasaki in Valentine’s 2020, Nagiko still vehemently asserts Murasaki as being wonderful and her friend. I doubt Seimei has an equivalent Teishi sama like Sei does though but Douman is still stuck desperately craving Seimei’s attention in Heian-kyo. I suppose while Seimei/Douman would be a more classical Sun/Moon ship (although it’s rather premature until we get Seimei as a unit), I’d sooner declare KaoNagi as  the far side and near side of the moon respectively.

Les érables déversaient d’incarnates larmes sur l’encre de l’étang. Assise à sa table, les corolles de ses robes déployées autour d’elle, Sei Shônagon laissait goûter son pinceau. Les caractères se dérobaient à l’approche du soir.

“Je ferai de ces feuilles un carnet de chevet !”. Ces mots d’autrefois lui tirèrent un sourire amer. Sa Majesté était alors encore en vie, son salon vibrait de bons mots et de couleurs chatoyantes. L’impératrice s’était dissoute en fumerolles d’encens, son enfant avait dévoré sa vie. Sei était pour beaucoup une pittoresque relique. Son arrogance dans l’épreuve suscitait à la fois le rejet et une admiration teintée de pitié.

Les commères n’attendaient qu’une occasion de se réjouir de sa déchéance. Sei  avait évité la chute en trouvant refuge dans la famille de sa maîtresse. Les issues étaient peu nombreuses : se remarier, se faire nonne, rentrer chez son père ? Venir à la cour avait été son choix, il fallait s’y tenir. La dame continuait à faire assaut d’esprit, sa combativité n’était pas morte sous la cendre. Elle brandissait haut son savoir, y compris concernant le bastion masculin des écrits chinois. 

“Elle tournera mal en étant si arrogante”, disait-on, particulièrement la dame Murasaki. Qu’en savaient-ils ? Kiyohara Nagiko, la femme qui avait laissé mari et fils pour poursuivre ses ambitions, leur échappait sous le masque de l’impertinente Sei Shônagon. 

“Qu’importe si je tourne mal, j’aurais été heureuse”. Cette certitude l’enveloppa d’un doux cocon. Son pinceau pouvait ressusciter la glorieuse époque de l’impératrice. Les épisodes déplaisants pouvaient bien être mis de côté, Sei offrirait un monde lumineux à la postérité.

Any idea why Nagiko had a nickname for Michinaga in Heian-kyo, but not for Seimei and (presumably, pre-Interlude 2) Raikou? Wasn't Heian-kyo set after Teishi's death?

Nagiko didn't have a nickname for Raikou before the Interlude because she's her dear brother's killer. The Seimei situation is seemingly just a hint that his vibes are more rancid than Douman's.

Shinko e la magia millenaria, online il trailer italiano del film

Il premiato lungometraggio diretto da Sunao Katabuchi (In questo angolo di mondo) sarà proiettato al Lucca Comics & Games 2019.

Yamato Video ha pubblicato un primo trailer per l’edizione italiana del film d’animazione “Shinko e la magia millenaria” (Mai Mai Shinko to Sennen no Mahou o Mai Mai Miracle).

Il premiato lungometraggio diretto da Sunao Katabuchi (In questo angolo di mondo, Black Lagoon) presso lo studio Madhouse, uscito nel 2009 in Giappone, sarà proiettato doppiato in occasione del Lucca Comics & Games 2019, sabato 1 novembre alle ore 18:00 presso il Cinema Astra di Lucca. In apertura dell’evento ci sarà un’introduzione a cura di Gualtiero Cannarsi, mentre a seguito della proiezione si darà spazio al commento e al dibattito col pubblico.

Tratto dal romanzo del 2004 “Mai Mai Shinko” di Takagi Nobuko, il film della durata di 95 minuti circa, si avvale delle musiche di Shusei Murai (Silver Spoon, Aiura) e dei fondali realizzati da Shin’ichi Ueara (Paranoia Agent, Paprika, The Tatami Galaxy).

Does Sei having the body of a high schooler have anything in particular to say about her characterization? Or is it simply as stated in her materials profile, that she's just insecure about being "too old for the job" but is otherwise mentally the same Sei Shonagon that lived through Teishi's death?

It's mainly to sell the zoomer party girl aesthetics. Why she chooses this visual identity is because of her need to be visibly having fun at all times. No deep secrets in this one.

I just wanted to pop in and say a quick thanks for all your translation work, it's made understanding a lot of Servants that would already be a little bit difficult to grok without the proper cultural grounding very easy, and I found some new favorites (Nagiko) along the way!

It makes me really happy that you singled out Nagiko specifically. She's OKSG's (and my) very special girl and I just find it really important to make as clear as I can how much love is poured into every aspect of her character.

Sei Shounagoncharov

Shounagoncharofu is an unreleased 973 tanka by Kiyohara no Motosuke. The poem is meant to immortalize the obscure tale of Yamamoto no Goncharofu (sometimes phonetically rendered as Goncharov to reflect a different dialect of the time), the failed owner of a red light district who traveled to Kyo in search of a new life, only to caught in the machinations of the terrible oni of Mt. Ooe and continuously stain his karma to climb in their rankings, ultimately attaining a status analogous to a shounagon among the demons.

Later in life, Motosuke's own daughter Nagiko became an unofficial shounagon in court, leading Motosuke to humorously attach the kanji 清 to the title of his never published manuscript, resulting in the infamous title of Sei Shounagoncharov.

The tanka reads:

言茶露負 - Goncharofu 罪重ねりし - tsumi kasanerishi 切なひ徒 - setsunai to 遊女主なりけり - yuujoshu narikeri 鬼の小納言 - oni no shounagon
