I'm cleaning up my blog's theme (please take a look! I like this new theme's readability) and found a Kiwi6 link lying around, and this led me to learning the service shuttered its doors just two years ago. RIP.

So I'm reading the postmortem now. It ranges from the predictable, the unsurprising but still kinda wild, the disappointed-in-humanity, to whatever this is.

Viruses/malware distribution: People kept trying to upload malware in increasingly creative ways. At first it was bitcoin_booster.exe so I just banned the file signatures; they eventually figured this out so I restricted EXE uploads to paid users only. Then they started subscribing with stolen credit cards so I had to turn off EXEs for everyone. So of course they switched to uploading ZIP files, and I had to severely restrict those. But then they just renamed them JPG or MP3 or whatever and...ultimately I ended up exploring a few integrations with antivirus systems but the costs were sort of prohibitive and I couldn't limit the scans to specific file types only as they kept figuring it out and renaming the files. Eventually this sort of died down because the best case for a malware distributor is their victim runs a freshly downloaded executable, and the "conversion rate" drops if they have to unzip something or change a file extension. I still got the occasional alert whenever Google Safe Browsing found something.

To this day I still don't know what this guy was trying to accomplish by sending me this email.

Pesky MP3 Links and How to Get Them Without MP3Skull

Please keep in mind this was originally written in 2016, and is being moved as is from Caution as it closes. That said, feel free to read it below.

So you used to use MP3Skull and now that it's down you have no MP3 links? So you're new to roleplaying and don't even know where to begin to find MP3 links, nonetheless how to use them? Yeah, I've been there. This is going to be a really straight forward guide to get the song you want to actually PLAY on your site.

The first thing you're going to want to do is go to Youtube. On Youtube, find the song that you want and then copy the link to the song directly.

Next you're going to want to go to a Youtube to MP3 converter site. You can google it but the one I like it Youtube-MP3. On this, enter the link to the song you chose and download the song as an mp3 file.

Now go to Kiwi6. Register and activate your account before uploading your file. When it's done uploading, grab the link to your song that ends in .mp3.

Go back to your site, into your settings, and edit your profile info. Scroll down to where ever there is a place for an mp3 link. It's important that after you've uploaded your song that you grab the link that ends in .mp3 or else it won't play.

Congrats! It now will play the song you chose. Celebrate this by playing that song on repeat until you hate it and have to follow these steps all over again to change it... Not that I've done that or anything...

hi! unfortunately i forgot the song wasn’t on youtube, but i’m gonna look thru my history real quick to find the safest way for you to listen to it) i found it through a saddening amount of time going through yandex and surfing through shady mp3 sites for the download, and the VK post with the information has disappeared :( however i LUCKILY have all the songs saved on my computer! i’ll get them to a file sharing service of some sort in a bit and reblog this post with the link!

I'm having trouble getting the audio player to work on macaron suite, what sites can the theme use audio from?

I like to use Dropbox or kiwi6! you just have to make sure you edit the dropbox url like in this tutorial.

edit: I should probably specify, you have to upload your own audio file.

HEY I was wondering, were you planning to put your Pianowrimo pieces up anywhere for download, like on your Bandcamp maybe?

Hi!  Well!!  I had thought about bandcamping them, tho I kind of forgot again, so thank you for reminding me!

So... I could...?  It’s a nice ready-made set anyway and I think a solid 30 minutes of music.  Maybe as a pay-what-you-want or.....???  

They’re not live piano recordings but they are consistent sound.  and I’d need some kinda album cover.  Bandcamp has been really nice and easy to use but I haven’t put enough time or focus into it or general self promotion I guess to get really anywhere with it;;

Related, I actually have a lot of piano music (...like... 100 things, short things) that I’ve been wanting to publish/”sell” in some way, if people are interested.  

I guess this would be a nice sort-of-freebie trailer to that.  Then I’d like to get more live recordings and that’s a whole thing in itself and then there’s the question of is there a way to sell sheet music that works for me.... (Or, are more people interested in recordings than I quite appreciate?! / would they be, i mean clearly I’m not getting thousands or even tens of hits here!)

thinking aloud here! I’d love anyone’s thoughts / would-you-buy/gift/download-for-free-this?-and-what-would-you-like (what about pdf sheet music? I mean currently that’s freely available here anyway) contributions.

How’d ya do that with in-built music players? I still haven’t figured it out and have resorted to using HTML

     I hear it works differently depending on what sort of built-in music player you have, but the themes I work with all just have a blank tab. So, if that’s what you’re working with, hopefully this will help.

     On a lot of themes, when you go into ‘customize,’ it’ll have a little input area called ‘music code’ or ‘music.’ That’s where you’ll put the music player code itself, but you have to actually generate a music player elsewhere which is where I kept messing up.

     Step 1, pick what music you want, and get mp3 files of it. I think some music players may be able to stream a youtube video, but I’m not sure on how that works.

     Step 2, upload it to a file hosting place where you can get a direct download link. I recommend kiwi6.com, that’s what I’m using personally. The link you need for the music player should end in .mp3. On that site, it will refer to that as the ‘direct link’ after you’ve uploaded it.

     Step 3, plug those direct links into your chosen audio player generator. I personally used Billy Audio Player, but I think there are other options as well. Note it needs to be a small one in that general style, otherwise it won’t fit in a little teeny music player tab.

     Step 4, generate the player, and copy the code it gives you into that ‘music’ slot in your theme. From there you should have a working music player! (In theory)
