It's crazy that gifs are pretty ubiquitous on the internet in the sense that they are not the most important piece of media but they are useful and they are passed around and they are a convenient way to represent something that requires one to closely analyse and watch but nobody actually works at creating gifs for the sake of them EXCEPT on Tumblr where giffing is an art form and giffing as a skill is a traditional practice which requires shared wisdom and basically everyone partakes in it and then the really crucial gifs get passed around and get crossposted to other sites and get used to make a point and get talked about but none of those other sites are working hard at creating gifs and when Tumblr finally croaks whenever that is the joy of giffing will be lost. It's like Tumblr is a small monastery in the mountains in italy and the bishops who come here all engage with the work related to the copying of manuscripts and texts that are widely used by libraries everywhere but no one gives the monastery it's due and then one day the monastery closes down and now nobody knows where to get copies of that particular text in that particular style and it's a major loss for scholarship in the world.
