*INOUE CLAN.

“The Inoue Clan (井上一族) were a family of shinobi native to Water, members of Kirigakure’s bottom caste, and the prior owners of the land on which it was built. The Blood Release is a kekkei genkai found exclusively in their lineage.

Historically known as the Daimyo’s dogs during the Warring States Era, they served as his personal protectors and soldiers out of mutual loyalty. Before their subjugation, the country’s western territories were in thrall to the Inoue. No foreign invader ever made it past their dark shores.

They were officially purged by Kirigakure following the end of the Third Mizukage’s reign. The last known Blood Rlease user died in the Fourth War, and the clan is currently listed as extinct.”

(Trivia: the Inoue’s symbol, which consists of a large, black square and three white triangles, represents their progenitors.)

CHARACTERISTICS.

Appearance.

Thanks to their own careful inbreeding, Inoue belonging to the ruling family are instantly recognisable from their dark green hair, while the majority of the clan possess light blonde colouring. However, those with stronger blood ties to the Hoshigaki are known to have blue hair of various shades. Blue/green eyes are the most common within the clan, usually being narrow and upturned.

They have sharp fangs, ranging from a single pair to two, as opposed to an entire mouth of shark-teeth like some of their countrymen.

Inoue members also tend to have pale skin with cool undertones. Freckles, moles, or other marks are uncommon. Tattooing, due to association with traffickers, is highly looked down upon with occasional punishment, depending on the outrageousness of the design. 

Scars in those who awakened the Blood Release are numerous, usually in the form of cuts on the arms/legs – prompting the derogatory nickname of ‘Water Tigers’. They are also very tall, in comparison to both local and international standards. The average height for men is roughly 210cm, while the average height for women is around 180cm.

Temperaments.

The Inoue are known for being short-tempered, dauntless, and difficult to control... But are also said to be awkwardly endearing. Their clan is not one that encourages open affection, so its members are left to display their more positive emotions in ways that are often misread by others due its vagueness, or in ways that are blatantly obvious.

They are most infamous, however, for their powerful and ultimately bloody grudges --- as well their extreme loyalty. There are countless stories of an Inoue’s voluntary sacrifice and suffering for the sake of those they love. Traitors are rarely found among their ranks, and those guilty are tortured and executed.

Shinobi.

One of the oldest shinobi clans in Water, the name “Inoue” has become near synonymous with violence. This is partly due to their inherited strength. Through incest, infanticide and careful outbreeding, the Inoue cultivated a bloodline that consistently produced monsters over their thousand-years existence. Notable figures hailing from the Inoue clan include: Inoue Maou (the “Red God”), Inoue Megumi (Water country’s first female serial killer), Inoue Kiseki (the Sandaime Mizukage, the “Blood Beast”), and Keumi Minami (the “Bloody Wraith”).

Shinobi born from this clan tend to have water affinities, innate talent in the ninja arts, outstanding pain tolerance – and very short lives.

Illness, Health & Age.

The Inoue are extremely prone to sickness of both mind and body. Even without the Blood Release’s consequent heart problems, they’re an overall sickly and frail clan.

Members are very vulnerable to disease, catching them more often and easily than most. The invention of vaccines aided their survival of such things, but weak immune systems coupled with Water’s poverty meant it remained a fatal problem well into their annexation by Kirigakure.

They are also more susceptible to Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, Bipolar Disorder, depression and  schizophrenia than the average person, and are more vulnerable to substance abuse. The lack of information on mental illnesses led to the clan blaming any ‘deviant’ behaviour as the result of “Blood Rage”, a so-called madness caused by a person’s inherent weakness. Affliction could lead to an Inoue being executed depending on severity.

All of these factors, combined with their body’s degradation from the Blood Release, meant that an Inoue’s average life expectancy was twenty-eight during the village era (twenty-five during the Warring States Era).

HISTORY.

The first Inoue was born 150 years following the birth of Indra and Ashura. The ancestor to all Blood Release users, a man named Maou, had humble roots. He was the fifth son of a poor farmer. His mother’s identity is speculated to be the missing daughter of the Daimyo. She was famed throughout the five major lands for her green hair – which Maou and all his siblings possessed, despite it being a rare, rare trait at the time. Not only that, she had been ‘missing’ a year when the eldest son was born. 

Both Maou’s parents died when he was eleven during his village’s slaughter, in which he awakened the Blood Release for the first time in history.

He made use of his powers and began his own crusade for power and wealth. Now a mercenary, one favoured by the new Daimyo (who was possibly his uncle), Maou soon found himself rich, feared and close to the royal family. He was gifted land by the Daimyo himself – a misty coast estate next to the mountains. It was hard to find, hard to attack and easy to defend; Maou was grateful, settling quickly.

He married three women. The only one of his wives whose name is known is Inoue Kayo, his last remaining sibling and younger sister. She became his first wife, and bore him three sons and a daughter.  The second wife gave Maou three daughters. The third wife gave him three sons and two daughters. After the birth of his youngest child, Maou died.

His twelve children continued his conquest, maintaining a close bond with the imperial clan while waging war against the west. Their descendants became primarily available for them, thus creating a relationship that benefitted both families. An Inoue was always present at court, be it as a guard, concubine or shadow and the Daimyo reliably filled their pocket in return. Those with divine blood trusted only the Inoue to protect their lives wholeheartedly.

They were loyal to the royal family above all others,  but they were still a mercenary clan that could be bought by coin – although they never accepted missions that conflicted with the Daimyo.

Their ‘Golden Age’ ended at the First Mizukage’s hands. 

He wanted their land – resource-rich, well-defended, strategically perfect – and he would have it, even if a thousand people had to die as payment. The Inoue fought well, but not even Blood Release users stood a chance against a clan coalition. They lost, shoved into Kirigakure’s bottom caste following the defeat.

Their lives in the village was less than pleasant. Inoue were treated with suspicion from the moment they were born to the moment they died, receiving nothing but the worst of everything. When Inoue Kiseki’s, the Third Mizukage, civil war rolled around, most understandably turned against their peers. This generation of Inoue were monstrous, fueled by rage and resentment for their stolen inheritance that could be hidden no longer. Their very presence on the battlefield was a promise for carnage. Both sides of the conflict were left traumatized.

Following the Mizukage’s death, his clan were deemed too dangerous to let exist. 

Unlike the other blood purges, which were mostly carried out by unsanctioned civilian mobs, the Inoue’s genocide was both decided and carried out by Kirigakure’s government. The ruling family were publicly executed for unexplained crimes of treason. The rest of the Inoue were killed individually by hunters, most mist-nin being kept in the dark to prevent another conflict.

A few dozen Inoue managed to survive, the majority fleeing their homeland for asylum only to be killed during the journey. Only seven remained in Water. By the time Uzumaki Naruto graduated, that number was reduced to zero.

Six people became all that was left of the Inoue after the Fourth war, only half being full-blooded. They chose to let their clan die, living the rest of their lives using aliases and obscurity to hide their existence. Despite Terumi Mei officially putting an end to the Inoue’s eradication, promising safety for any survivors, they were too frightened to return.

During Kirigakure’s modernisation, a statue depicting the Inoue was placed near the memorial park. It is an apology for their tragedy, as well as a ‘thank you’ for their service to both the country and village.

It is all that is left.

He soon proved to be one of the main factors in winning the Fourth Shinobi World War, leading him to achieve his dream and become the village's Seventh Hokage ( 七代目火影, Nanadaime Hokage, literally meaning: Seventh Fire Shadow). In the following years, through many hardships and ordeals, he became a capable ninja, regarded as a hero both by the villagers, and soon after, the rest of the world, becoming known as the Hero of the Hidden Leaf ( 木ノ葉隠れの英雄, Konohagakure no Eiyū, literally meaning: Hero of the Hidden Tree Leaves). After joining Team Kakashi, Naruto worked hard to gain the village's acknowledgement all the while chasing his dream to become Hokage. He became the jinchūriki of the Nine-Tails on the day of his birth - a fate that caused him to be shunned by most of Konoha throughout his childhood. Naruto Uzumaki ( うずまきナルト, Uzumaki Naruto) is a shinobi of Konohagakure's Uzumaki clan.

The dirt on our boots shakes free over time

Written for @shikasaku-week​ and tagging @raendown​ for the help with Sasuke’s troublesome love life.

Day Three: Sky/Earth (I went a bit far with it, tho)

"Sobo-sama! Sobo-sama!"

The old lady turns around, a smile already blooming on her thin lips. The child running towards her has the widest grin on his face, his short pink hair plastered on his forehead. He finally catches up to her, his small hands fisting around the hem of her formal kimono.

"How are you doing, Kiseki-chan?"

"Kaa-san told me about Sofu-sama and the Fifth War! Is it true?"

She chuckles, her wrinkled eyes glittering with mirth. Kiseki looks up to her face, wonder on his features. Her hair is still as pink as it was in her youth, and there are now three seals on her forehead. She doesn't have any reason to use them, but she knows how important it might one day be to have that much chakra to pass on.

It does make for an interesting sight when she's invited by the Hyūga clan. Their children practice their Byakugan on her and most of them end up with teary eyes and a headache for days. She's been told on numerous account that she's a supernova of chakra. It does wonder to her ego in her old age.

"It is very much true, Kiseki-chan. Would you like to know more?"

"Totally! Do you mind if I bring my friends?"

"Of course not. Tell your father he can take a day off watching over you little hooligans."

"Sobo-sama!"

Sakura keeps walking, laughing softly as he starts to pout. She slows down when she feels the familiar chakra of her daughter-in-law. In a swirl of leaves and dust, the woman appears next to them.

"Hello, Giri-san," she says, nodding towards the dark-haired woman.

"Honoured Clan Head," her daughter-in-law answers with a private smile. They've always gotten along just fine, often finding a shared enjoyment in making their respective son and husband miserable. "I hope Kiseki hasn't been bothering you."

"Nonsense. I hear you've been telling my grandson stories."

"Shouldn't I?" Giri tenses, knowing the subject is a sensitive one.

"As long as you made it into epic tales of glorious battles and complete victories, I shall be happy," Sakura says with her straightest face, before giggling like a school girl at Giri's paling cheeks.

"You are cruel, Sakura-sama."

"Of course I am, I was in a team with your father for almost three decades."

Kiseki looks between them like they're passing a ball, an amazed expression on his sweet face. Sakura doesn't mention the sharingan he must have activated on accident, and neither does Giri. She was born without the kekkai genkai, and knew how happy Sasuke was that Kiseki inherited the eyes.

"I've invited Kiseki and his friends for a cup of tea and a chat. I believe they are quite interested in the war stories involving my husband."

"I'm glad to hear that, Sakura-sama."

"Give my regards to my son, will you? You should both take a small break, I wouldn't mind taking care of Kiseki for a few days."

Giri looks unmistakably grateful at the offer and bows respectfully before vanishing. Kiseki takes off running, promising to come back later for tea. Sakura shakes her head fondly and continues her path towards the Hokage's office. She longs for her son to accept the Clan Head position so she can step down. She's been leading the Nara clan for almost twenty years now, and she'd like a vacation. Or at least for those painful Council sessions to stop.

The room is already full by the time she steps inside. She hides a smirk when she sees Kakashi, looking younger than her and sitting at Suisen's right. Ino's son looks as sharp as ever in his Hokage's robes, his blond hair and blue eyes a painful reminder of the precious people they lost.

The session begins and Sakura is becoming quickly bored. Most of the matters addressed aren't relevant to her clan and she quite frankly doesn't give a fuck about the trade routes being slowed down by a caravan from Kumo. But she might have the second most powerful position in the entire village and her presence has been mandatory for the better half of her life.

Kakashi sends up a sharp look, sharper than his tremendously old age should allow him to. She carefully checks that no one is looking her way before sticking her tong out. His eyes go wide and he tries his best to hide a snort of laughter. She does her best not to feel smug about it.

Finally, Suisen frees them from the torture and Sakura leaves the room side by side with Shino and Chōji, her only friends still sharing her difficult (ahem) position of Clan Head. She nods towards Shiawase, Giri's younger sister and actual Uchiha Clan Head. The young woman bows, her dark skin and brown hair an impressive contrast in front of the white wall.

Sakura still has no idea how Sasuke managed to score a wife as kind, honourable, pretty and terrifying as Kumui. He came back with her one day, declared that they got married in Kumo and that anyone who had a problem with this could take it up to his wife because she was way scarier than him. Despite being a civilian and missing a leg. No one asked. If Giri took her father's colourings, Shiawase looks a great deal more like her mother despite having the sharingan, albeit a weak version of it.

Chōji walks her home and she kisses him on the cheek before going inside. She could already hear the chatter and laughter of the children in her garden. Sakura joins them, not surprised to find Kiseki gathering medicinal plants, helped by his friends. She's even less surprised to recognize in them a good portion of the Konoha 11's legacy.

Sakura will never get rid of the bitter taste in her mouth when she can't find any mop of black hair, or any white eyes. She knows she should be grateful that a good half of her promotion survived the Fifth War, but the price is too much in her eyes. Iwa has been wiped out from the map and is now Land of Fire territory. Kiri and Konoha are the strongest villages, and most of Kumo's ninja moved to the Land of Wind, where they established a new Kumo. The ashes of the old one where still burning when Kiri made it their. There are only three great nations now, and it's mostly on Iwa's greedy hands.

Yet Hinata was killed in the first days of the war, followed by Lee a few weeks later. How is that fair, that two of the sweetest persons in her village died so soon? Looking at the children playing before her eyes, Sakura has to fight against the frown she can feel twisting her features. She lost her best friend in the whole word in this fucking war, and no one managed to replace the Naruto-shaped hole in her heart. And if that wasn't enough, Shikamaru gave his life to ensure that peace would last. The Fifth War took everything from her, and if it hadn't been for her sons, Sakura would have found a way to bring them back and to hell with her soul and principles.

"Sobo-sama! You're home!"

At Kiseki's shout, everyone turns around to look at the legend standing in a kimono and tight bun, with a soft smile on her wrinkled face. After the Fifth War, people started calling her Titan. She has never heard a more ridiculous nickname, and her promotion has made sure not to let her forget it as the years went by, prompting their children to call her that, and later their grandchildren.

(in her defence, how could she know that destroying the entirety of Iwa's defensive wall with the press of a finger and throwing the massive door in the Tsuchikage's face would result in this nonsense?) (yes, she knows she's a hypocrite)

"I'm glad to see all of you. Has anyone brought you tea, yet?"

Murasaki points in the direction of the tray, under the shadow of a sakura tree. Her face turns three shades darker under Sakura's amused eyes. She goes to kneel next to the tray and pours herself a cup. The children quietly gather around her, her three grandchildren closer to her. Sōga nestles under her arm, her green eyes closing slowly as she waits for the story. Yaseika leans on Kiseki's shoulder, his new clan marking slowly healing on his round cheeks.

"You're all here to hear about your grandparents and the stories of their battles in the Fourth and Fifth war, yes?"

"Yeah!"

"Well, last week I told you about my first partner, Inuzuka Kiba." She has to stop when Yaseika and Sōga start cheering. "This week, I have for you the tale of Konoha's greatest mind, who was also my husband. His name was Nara Shikamaru, and he is the reason the Land of Fire still stands today."

💓- A memory about their friends

“ Why is sensei so worked up today ? ” 

The usually collected woman had been unreasonably temperamental today, and Minami could see the dried blood on her fingers where she had picked at her hangnails nervously. It wasn’t just her either - all of the adults seemed to be in a foul mood. The eight year old couldn’t help but be confused. All of the other Academy students seemed to be equally uninformed. 

“ Maybe someone important died ? ” Junko offered, playing with her long red hair. Typical.

“ Maybe Zabuza-chan got killed by the ghosts ? ” Daiki was quick to add his own comment to the conversation. He always rushed at any chance to insult Zabuza - he did murder Daiki’s sister after all. 

“ Ooo, maybe the Mizukage died ? ”

“ Nah, ma brother told me that the Mizukage turned out to be a traitor. ” 

“ Don’t be an idiot ! Sensei will hit you if she hears you say that. ”

A loud bang interrupted the excited whispers, scaring the life out of a couple students. Minami jumped in her seat, quickly facing the front of the class. Kiseki giggled at her twin’s terrified expression before turning her body around to see just who caused the noise. 

‘ Oh mans, it’s that guy. He’s scary. ’ Kiseki discreetly nudged her younger sister, only to get a kick to the shin back. Before the class of Kirgakure students was the only jounin instructor at the Academy. What was he even doing in their classroom ? He only taught the older and better students. A new, tense feeling contaminated the atmosphere. It was never good news when people like him appeared.

“ I am here to inform you all that as of today - ” Whispers broke out again, the children ( taking advantage of their sensei’s reluctance to do anything but sit at her desk ) eager to discuss their new theories. 

“ QUIET ! ” That shut up the twenty or so children very effectively. Regaining his composure, the intimidating teacher continued his announcement, although still mildly pissed at the Academy students rudeness. 

“ Due to our Daimyos orders, as of today, Kirigakure is at war. ” 

The man tried to finish his announcement, but the outraged cries of the children drowned out his voice. Minami sat in stunned silence, and she could hear Kiseki and Junko yell and demand answers from the Jounin instructor. Their classes sensei slumped at her desk, shoving her marred face into her hands. 

                                                                                                                     It had been six months since war was declared.  Their normal instructor had been sent to die somewhere foreign, like most of the Chunin Academy teachers. Because of the severe lack of teachers, most classes had been merged together for the time being. The Keumi twins barely had any time to hang out with their friends lately due to their separate training ; it was almost a blessing that the two had the day off so they could relax and rest. 

Junko and Minami sat underneath a large tree, as it was unbelievably hot and the shade offered some shelter. The bright eyed Uzumaki girl was attempting to style her friend’s hair, occasionally waving at Daiki, who was playing war with the other boys. Kiseki and her ‘ cult ’ animatedly discussed new jutsu they learnt, with Kiseki glancing at the strange haired duo every few minutes. It was a nice break in Minami’s usual routine of training, tests, training, and even more tests … 

“ My papa heard a rumor last night. There was something that happened ..? Something happened to the Three Tails, and now all the higher ups are superrr angry. I think they killed a couple people cuz of it. ” Junko spoke calmly, as if talking about the weather or what she had for dinner last night.

“ Three Tails ? Ain’t that’s important ? ” Minami questioned, wincing when the Uzumaki tugged at a knot in her hair. “ Ow ..! ”

“ Sorry Mimi. And yeahs, it’s important. Konoha’s angry too. ” Minami huffed at that, and Junko sighed as she heard Minami’s ever so repeated rant.

“ Konoha sucks ! They can be angry all they waaants, I don’t give a frick on what they think - they’re Fire rats ! They can eat my - ” 

“ Maa, Mimi, I’m bored. You do my hair now !! ” Junko was quick to change the subject. When Minami started her rants, she then complained about ‘ disgusting outsiders ’, not realizing how uncomfortable her best friend looked when she mentioned the Uzumaki were ‘ an example of how immigrants should be.’

( Young Minami was super xenophobic tbh because she copied what the adults said )
