As a matter of fact, they do!

Design- and personality-wise, they aren’t that different from their counterparts (other than M!Bow’s scars and affinity for Ice instead of Water), but growing up in the more hostile environments of the Mirror World - as well as hanging around with bad influences like Dameta and (Shadow) Dedede - do end up pushing some of their more negative traits to extremes. In M!Bow’s case, it is their aggression, recklessness, and tendency towards rebellion. In M!Para’s case, it is his cowardice, frailty, and tendency towards compliance.

Kintsugi is the art of decorating your scars with pieces of Agni.

In the Fire Nation, the amount of golden marks are a sign of status. Only the Royal Family can afford to seal every single wound with Kintsugi. Such is the weight of this tradition that, among the ones with Agni's blood, it is the highest mark of dishonor to have a natural scar, for it proves you aren't worthy of the privilege.

After the Agni Kai, Ozai forbid Zuko's scar to be sealed with Kintsugi. The boy wasn't worth his title, his traditions or his pride. Zuko would be broken, but he wouldn't be beautiful. Not anymore.

(And sometimes it's easier to pretend he never was)

xehanort kintsugi story 👀👀👀?

Haha, so this is actually the main document for Fool's Gold, it just...never got officially renamed at any point. (Break Your Heart Like Glass is actually similar; it remaned 'Baldr story' in my documents until I actually posted it.) Basically, I knew I wanted to do a story in the series from Xehanort's perspective, and there was a lot of interesting stuff about him (his relationship with the Player, his "memories" of the Union Leaders, his connection to Ephemer...) that I wanted to kind of explore. This was basically my opportunity to do that!

(It was surprisingly easy to write, which was...kind of a relief after how hard it was to write Fill the Cracks with Gold, aha.)

Fan-made IF Routes

Nameless Wanderer AU: Julius loses his Name in Priestella and strikes out on his own, aimless, only to end up getting dragged along by the mysterious possibly-the-Archbishop-of-Pride named Schwartz who claims to be another victim of Gluttony.

Crusch IF: Reinhard brings Subaru to Ferris after Elsa’s assassination attempt, where he ends up being hired as a worker in Crusch’s mansion. Everything goes pretty well for the first month, until about two days before the Whale is scheduled to hit — at which point Subaru’s mind shatters.

Nect Reveal IF: Julius sees into Subaru’s memories when they link souls during the fight against Petelgeuse, where he 1) concludes that he is a couple months old, as he cannot see into his time from beyond the Great Waterfall and 2) figures out RBD in its entirety.

Housecat IF/Chewtoy IF: Everyone is an animal hybrid and housecat!Subaru has developed a complex where he has started to think that he was summoned here as a domesticated cat to serve as a chewtoy for all the wilder and more dangerous animal hybrids of the Re:Zero world.

Whale IF: Subaru dies during the Whale fight and resets to moments before it begins, where he spends about two months continuously looping in order to get every single person out alive. Everyone figures out that he has some sort of time travel ability behind his back. He has no idea.

Omegaverse IF: Omegaverse.

House Arrest IF: Reinhard kidnaps Subaru alongside Felt due to him being a suspected Witch Cultist.

Amnesia IF: Instead of Joshua and Julius losing their names in Priestella, Subaru loses his memories. Everyone gets a front-seat view to Subaru’s second spiral into madness as he rediscovers RBD, one loop at a time.

Natsumi IF/Homosexual IF: Crack AU where Subaru has internally accepted Natsumi Schwartz before the start of the series but is now consciously repressing her anyway due to fears of how crossdressing might be seen in this medieval-style fantasy world. He is so bad at this that everyone thinks he’s gay. This does not stop him from trying to present himself as a Man at every opportunity and giving everyone — especially the traditionally masculine men he is attempting to emulate — massive amounts of psychic damage.

Kintsugi IF: Reinsuba Soulmate AU where traumatic events show up as golden scars on your soulmate’s body. Reinhard has no idea who his soulmate is or what the fuck could be causing all of these horrifying injuries and he is trying desperately to find out whoever’s responsible.

Feral Subaru AU: Subaru is Isekai’d at ten years old and is immediately traumatized by Capella before being taken in by Emilia. He bites people sometimes.

Runaway IF: Subaru and Emilia have a miscommunication post-Petelgeuse that leads to Subaru (wrongly) concluding that he is unwanted, and for the very good reason of painting a target on everyone’s backs, and so he leaves in the middle of the night and accidentally kicks off a manhunt that lasts for an entire year.

Back to Zero IF: Everyone learns about RBD in its entirety, and then everyone except for Subaru gets sent back to Subaru’s duel against Julius. Chaos ensues.

            “Why are you here, Eraqus?”

            “Huh?”

            Baldr carefully set his gardening tools aside, rubbing dirt off his pant legs.  In many ways, he didn’t look that different from the Baldr Eraqus had gone to class with: same eyes, same hair, same face.  But the clothes had been exchanged for jeans and a t-shirt, his hair pinned back, his face set in an expression Eraqus wasn’t used to.  “I didn’t know you liked gardening,” he said, with an awkward smile and a laugh, like that could get him out of answering.

            (There were a lot of things he didn’t know about Baldr.)

            Baldr sighed, near-quiet.  He didn’t quite look at Eraqus, eyes shifted to some point over his shoulder, but it was enough to make his heartrate spike.  (He was too close, this was dangerous, there was no one else here, what if Eraqus had to—)

            “I—I just wanted to see my friend.”

            “No you don’t.”  The words were quiet, but unyielding, and they made Eraqus flinch.  Baldr’s eyes shifted to his momentarily, then flicked away again.  “Or—you don’t want to see me.”

            It was baffling enough to start Eraqus out of his worry.  “But you’re…the same person…?”

            “I’m not.”

            “Is this about the whole ‘darkness’ thing?  Because I thought Master Yen Sid said—”

            “Eraqus.”

            Eraqus faltered.  It felt a little like something was crumbling between his fingertips.  “I just wanted to see you,” he repeated.

            He didn’t say, You’re the only one left, besides Xehanort, and he’s changed and I don’t know what to do.

            He didn’t say, I want things to go back to the way they were.

            He didn’t say, I still don’t want to believe that you were the one who killed them.  Just give me a reason to forgive you.  Please.

            He didn’t say it, but Baldr seemed to pick up on his thoughts, anyways.  He sighed again, closing his eyes, and when he opened them again he finally looked at Eraqus.  “Go home, Eraqus.  This is just going to hurt you.”

            “I—no.  No, that’s—I don’t want to.”  That hurts more.

            Baldr’s expression turned conflicted briefly, but he smoothed it over.  “You flinch every time you look at me.”

            Eraqus tried very, very hard not to prove his point.

            Baldr seemed to notice, anyways, a bitter sort of smirk crossing his face.  It softened into something sadder—something understanding in a way that made Eraqus’s stomach twist uncomfortably.  “Maybe we can try again sometime—but not yet.  Not when you’re still hurting.”  Baldr shrugged, glancing aside.  “And maybe by that point you won’t want to.”

            A protest bubbled in his throat—he would never give up on his friends, ever—but it got caught behind his teeth, and he just stared at Baldr and tried to ignore how lost he felt.

            After a moment Baldr turned back to his garden, digging into the dirt.  Eraqus didn’t think it was supposed to sound loud, but it did, the noise filling in the holes where conversation should’ve been.

            He couldn’t leave.  He couldn’t stay.  He couldn’t move, and so he just stood there, awkward in his indecision.  He’d never felt so out of place in his life.
