Gravitation
Okay!! It is about 1:55 am and I just finished listening to this in it’s entirety, so let’s review!
In my original post, when I said I’m not a fan of the autotune, Audrey and the chorus girls are by far the main offenders. I’m just not really a fan of them, I feel like they tried way too hard, and it just didn’t work for me. Also, Audrey sounds a bit... emotionless(?) to me. I feel like Tammy Blanchard was trying too hard to do this voice for her that she completely forgot to express emotion, especially in that scene where Orin hits her in Feed Me. Pretty much every Audrey I’ve heard is breathing fast, panicking, maybe on the verge of tears. But Tammy? “I’m sorry DOCtuh, I’m sorry DOCtuh.” I didn’t feel a thing there. Maybe I’m not being fair to her (to me, Kerry Butler takes the cake as Audrey, and I’m just comparing Tammy to her) but I did try to keep an open mind, and she just didn’t cut it for me. But that’s just my opinion. (it’s too soon though to know whether it’s unpopular or not!)
On the other hand, I love Jonathan Groff’s performance, even more than I expected to! He lacks the sort of Awkwardness and Nerdiness that I think is pretty center so to Seymour’s character, but I love how he plays him as being Hecka Freaked Out by this whole situation, better than any other actor I’ve heard, so that sorta makes up for it, in a way? (Although part of me would argue that all of his screaming in the Act 1 Finale is a bit over-the-top, but then again, I would be having a mental breakdown too if I had just chopped up a person, even if it is a person that I despise with all of my being, and am currently feeding that person to a talking, man-eating plant.) His voice is incredible, but like I said before, it doesn’t feel quite like Seymour, just because it’s too perfect, and again, not awkward and nerdy enough, ya know what I mean?
Kingsley Leggs was a great Audrey II, he’s just got a great big voice, and, I mean, he was pretty much all we can ask for as an Audrey II. Kudos to him đŸ‘đŸ»đŸ‘đŸ»đŸ‘đŸ»
Christian Borle was a fabulous Orin, quite possibly my all time favorite (certainly enough to give Steve Martin and Douglas Sills from the 2003 cast a run for their money!) He was absolutely hilarious and delivered all his lines so well, and Dentist! was absolutely priceless.
Overall, I think I really enjoyed this! It’s not my favorite version, again, but it definitely has enough gems in it to keep me coming back for more!
So I’m listening to the new LSOH cast recording now (I just finished Feed Me!), and I’m just gonna say it... it certainly has its strengths, and it has its weaknesses. For example, I don’t get what’s up with Audrey constantly emphasizing odd words and syllables, and I’m simply not a fan of the heavy use of autotune in this recording (I admit I have a hard time respecting singers who rely so heavily on it that it’s that noticeable in their recordings, and then I can’t hear anything else but the autotune. I mean nobody has perfect intonation all the time, except maybe BeyoncĂ©, so I have no problem with pitch correction being used I moderation. But if it can be heard in practically every other phrase, the way I see it, it’s a problem. Anyway, rant over.) But I also really love Orin in this version, and there are some Moments in this recording that just cracked me up and I would give anything to see them live on stage.
“Seymooouur... how would you like to be mY SON?!”
“GAAUGH!!”
“Look. You’re a plant. An... inanimate object.”
“DOES THIS LOOK INANIMATE TO YOU, PUNK?!”
“aAAaaAAAH!!”
(So basically Seymour’s little screams every now and then are just. The funniest thing to me đŸ€ŁđŸ˜”)
Jonathan Groff just rocking that solo in Feed Me! Like, YES, sing it boy!
*matter-of-fact* “No. I don’t know anyone who deserves to get chopped up and fed to a hungry plant.”
Overall, it’s not my favorite version of Little Shop, I think that honor will always go to either the movie or the 2003 Broadway cast (sort of both I guess?) But yes, it is very enjoyable to listen to 😁

A thing that’s really cool about Hadestown is how Hermes became more attached to Orpheus over time with each passing iteration of the story. Looking at it chronologically it feels like it was planned, but it stemmed from the story needing a narrator and went from there!
In Vermont, Hermes was on Hades’ side pretty firmly, trying to tempt both Orpheus and Eurydice away, but still helped Orpheus get on the train cause he felt like it. On the album he didn’t tempt either of them away and was kinda detached from proceedings, but gave Orph instructions on how to get to Hadestown the long way. By NYTW, Hermes is firmly invested and friendlier to them both, sticking around the whole time to narrate and by the end considering Orpheus a friend.
Kingsley Leggs’ Hermes in Edmonton is the first time he has a fatherly air to him, and he has a soft spot for love and Orpheus specifically. By London he’s invested in Orpheus’s gifts more than before and shows interest in his bring-back-spring project, and by Broadway and the touring version he’s taken Orpheus under his wing from a young age and does whatever he can in his capacity as narrator to help Orpheus and Eurydice, trying to ensure the tale goes well.
