"In 1404, King Taejong fell from his horse during a hunting expedition. Embarrassed, looking to his left and right, he commanded, “Do not let the historian find out about this.” To his disappointment, the historian accompanying the hunting party included these words in the annals, in addition to a description of the king’s fall."
Happy King Taejong fell off his horse day!

Fandom Problem #5228:
Some dumbass called me a hypocrite because I like historical fiction but am grossed out by porn about currently-alive celebrities. I don't know how to break it to you that King Taejong of Joseon, who died in 1422, is not going to get offended by how he's portrayed in fiction. Random Celebrity 12345 on the other hand...

In Defense of Lady Kang/Queen Sindeok (1/3)
As promised, here's the first part of my defense of Queen Sindeok, explaining her historical political situation + clearing up some common fandom misconceptions about her, which I don't blame anyone for since they originate from the show itself. I must admit that I have a bit of a soft spot for her since history generally tends to be unkind to women - this extends to modern media and MCTNA is no exception:
(more under the cut)
Before we start, I thought I'd give a small refresher on the Yi family constellation - crucial for setting up the conflict and crown prince issue - with the aid of this extremely useful graphic by bodashiri (excluding the daughters for simplicity's sake):

(From here: x)
As you can see, Yi Seong-gye (King Taejo of Joseon) had two wives:
His first wife Lady Han (Queen Sinui) gave birth to six sons: 1. Yi Bang-woo (Prince Jinan), 2. Yi Bang-gwa (Prince Youngan), 3. Yi Bang-ui (Prince Yikan), 4. Yi Bang-gan (Prince Hoean), 5. Yi Bang-won (Prince Jeongan) and 6. Yi Bang-yeon (Prince Deokan).
His second wife Lady Kang (Queen Sindeok) gave birth to two sons: 7. Yi Bang-beon (Prince Muan) and 8. Yi Bang-seok (Prince Uian),
meaning that Seong-gye had eight sons overall.
With that out of the way, let's get started!!!
1. Queen Sindeok was NOT a concubine
(From here: x)
She is referred to as Yi Seong-gye/King Taejo's capital/Seoul wife in the show too:
However, every time Bang-won calls her a concubine and her children illegitimate there is never any pushback or correction by anyone, not even when he calls her younger son Bang-seok/Prince Uian a ‘seoja’ (illegitimate child born to a commoner concubine or royal concubine) in front of Seon-ho:
You'd think Seon-ho would defend Bang-seok by correcting Bang-won... but nope. Nada.
Not even Queen Sindeok (!!!) is allowed to defend herself and her children when they get accused of the same:
Like, what is this madness!!!
Anyone who doesn't know about Korean history would never even SUSPECT that this isn’t actually true, and that Queen Sindeok is in fact a legitimate second wife and queen. By giving no pushback to the (false) claims of illegitimacy, the show seems to implicitly support Bang-won’s narrative of her being a lying, conniving, greedy bitch who wants to push her child on the throne despite having no right to it whatsoever as a concubine and bastard respectively.
Queen Sindeok's tragedy, the one that MCTNA fails to portray, is not that she was a concubine who tried to rise above her station (because she was not); it's that, due to the transition from Goryeo to Joseon, she found herself caught between two conflicting sets of laws:
(From Tombstones without a Tomb by Hildi Kang)
A queen while alive, and unjustly demoted to a concubine in death by Bang-won/King Taejong who used these legal changes and the new Confucian ruling to his advantage, her status was a matter of contention for scholars and kings alike for almost 300 years, until finally, in 1669, the scholar Song Si-yeol managed to amass enough people and put enough pressure on King Hyeonjong to make him give in to their demands and restore Queen Sindeok to her rightful status and honor as queen.
+ Bonus:
(From Tombstones without a Tomb by Hildi Kang)
Turns out that according to the new Confucian ruling, Bang-won himself should have been considered illegitimate too!! Surprise!!!

Remember, an elephant is not just for Christmas!
If you are a medieval ruler like Henry III who received an elephant from his brother-in-law (St) Louis IX of France in early December 1254, be prepared to spend:
£6 17 shillings 5 pence (refund to the sheriff of Kent for transporting the elephant from France to England) £22 20 pence on a multi-purpose elephant house at the Tower of London £24 14 shillings 3½ pence on food for the elephant every nine months
By comparison, a laborer might earn just 1-and-a-half pence per day, while a well-to-do knight might live on £15 per year. (For more, see Cassidy's and Clasby's article from the Fine Rolls of Henry III Project.) And don't forget, you will have to pay for the elephant's keeper, too! The monk-chronicler Matthew Paris helpfully depicted Henry III's elephants alongside one of its keepers for scale. The man is labelled as Henry de Flor, "mag[iste]r bestie" ("caretaker of the beast").
Sadly, Henry did not have these expenses for long: although many medieval legends emphasized elephants' longevity, this elephant only lived until 1257 in the inhospitable northern climate. When it died, it was initially buried in the tower, but Henry later had its bones transferred to Westminster Abbey.
Despite these difficulties and costs, elephants had a notable history as diplomatic gifts in the Middle Ages, even in regions where elephants did not naturally live. Charlemagne's elephant Abul Abbas is a very early example of the phenomenon, and by the eleventh century Byzantine emperors were receiving elephants in Constantinople. In 1228, the Holy Roman Emperor Frederick II received an elephant from al-Kamil, the ruler of Egypt, and King Louis IX probably also received his elephant from an Egyptian ruler before regifting it to Henry III.
Side note: although the "white elephant" gift exchange claims to be based on a southeast Asian ruler's practice of punishing courtiers with a gift that would cost them a lot of money, there is not much historical evidence for this before the story was shared in the Anglo-American world in modern era. Some elephants fought back over being passed around as gifts, though. In the early 15th century an elephant and other rare animals arrived in Japan. (Martha Chaiklin has suggested that they were intended as a diplomatic gift for someone else, but were blown off course and ended up with the Ashikaga shogun.) The elephant was extremely grumpy and trampled some courtiers, so the shogun regifted it to Taejong, ruler of Korea. The elephant continued to trample courtiers in Korea and was expensive to feed, so Taejong exiled it to its own private island, where it continued to live.

The BG3 companions and where I would take them:
Gale- Libraries. Old ones, new ones, ones all over the world. Show him the Veritable Records of the Joseon era in Korea - he’d be fascinated by extensive record keeping and how we know King Taejong fell off his horse. We might not have wizards, but there’s enough interesting stuff in history for him to be entertained for a long time
Wyll- Needs an absolute break. Treat him to an actual spa day so he can relax. Show him a national park or two, introduce him to the works of Shakespeare and Super Smash Bros. Make up for those last few years as a teen he didn’t get
Karlach- Axe throwing and a roller derby. Absolutely destroys at both and she’s having a good time about it. Put that rage to good use-we’re getting pizza after and will join Wyll for Smash Bros
Shadowheart- Absolutely vibing at a rock or metal concert. Show her fishnets, ripped jeans and muscle tees and she’s sold. She might come out of it with a tattoo and a desire to learn the electric bass. Take her to a record store and talk about music for a while.
Lae’zel - A kendo club. I think she’d think that overall most military operations in our world are devoid of honor and tact, but would marvel at things like kendo or fencing. Would likely be upset that no one is actually killed, and might actually try and kill someone if she was able to join the club.
Astarion- Art museum. Judge the art to your hearts content my guy. There’s an exhibit on fashion, let’s look at stitching and beading and how intricate people are with their craft. No risk of being touched, low key environment. I think it’d be good for him.
All of them- therapy
#Jaheira can join Wyll for the spa day but I don’t think she’d actually relax#Minsc is absolutely joining Karlach but also just shows up wherever#Halsin…the Monterrey bay aquarium#he’d like it there I think

the thing is there is a Taejodae and a Taejo and a Taejong and a Goguryeo and a Goryeo and a Balhae and a Baekje (not trying to claim legitimacy by invoking each other just bad for me personally) and two separate prince uks (same dad) who both became posthumous kings after their son took the throne & one of those sons was the other one's grandson and i think the uk-uk progeny also married a bunch of maternal-grandpa-uk's grandaughters and so introducing McCune-Reischauer to my quest to untangle goryeo royal family drama has been an experience for me. translation is such a miracle and i am so grateful but also i'm crying at the club (interlibrary loan request form).
#i'd like to shout out wikipedia i'm trying to press beyond u but someone undeniably put a lot of work in there#wikipedia editors of the goryeo royal dynasty you're heroes and scholars#libraries of redacted u are NOT i am not trying to untangle Buddhist monastery lore#why are you all so up on goryeo era buddhist monastery lore AND NOTHING ELSE

Tree with Deep Roots episodes 12-17

I don’t know why this nerd king/pet genius dynamic gets me going but it does

Yeeesss, a reenactment of my favorite scene!! “I was even prepared to slash down the former King Taejong in order to protect you. I cannot stand down.” Mu-hyul sweetheart :(

Please tell me any other head of state who would solve this problem in this way lmaooo. Yi Do turns every student protest into debate club

Whenever someone in this show realizes that Hangul is only 24 letters and lose their shit about it I get goosebumps over my entire body. Also shout out to Jo Hee-bong for consistently playing the funniest, goofiest, most charming rascals in this cinematic universe. He’s just my silly little guy <3

It takes a certain kind of cruelty to live among commoners one’s entire life and then choose to die on the hill that they shouldn’t get to read or write. “Uncle Sambong wouldn’t have wanted this” bitch Uncle Sambong is going to crawl out of his grave and return as a vengeful ghost to slap you around the head for distorting Milbon’s philosophy. THE PEOPLE ARE THE ROOT, YOU JERK

“The woman Yi Bang-ji loved was also Jeong Do-jeon’s woman.” Lmao what? Mu-hyul wore his squeakiest clown shoes all throughout SFD, I see. Well you and me both, musa-nim

Even watching this scene in a flashback with different actors is giving me post-traumatic stress 😭

Hii Sea, I saw in your tags that you associate the color blue with Seon-ho and green with Sung-rok. So, I got curious, do you associate any colors with Hwi and Bang-won (and possibly why)?
Hi Lilja :DDD So clever of you to ask about colors since you know I always have MANY thoughts about that!!
Okay, let's start with Hwi... he may be red-coded and starts to wear it once he starts to work for Bang-won, but that doesn't feel like his true nature and I always think of yellow/gold as his color due to the canon sun symbolism for him, equally capable of nurturing life as destroying it. I also associate that color with his hero narrative and the hero's journey he goes through, taking him from a simple boy with simple dreams who doesn't have an easy life but is nonetheless happy with his small family/home (consisting of Yeon and Seon-ho) to someone who, in the wake of 'betrayal' and war trauma and the loss of his home (all he wants is to go home, but what do you do when you return from war only to find your home is no longer there? that your sister has forgotten you and your friend has become a stranger?), schemes and backstabs as ruthlessly as anyone else in the show in pursuit of his goals and later revenge, uncaring of who he hurts along the way; to finally remember and rediscover his heart again, the simple dreams he once had - that all he ever wanted was a simple, happy life surrounded by his loved ones. That they are his country and he wants to protect them. That he wants to go home. He regrets, repents, tries to understand, forgives and accepts, apologizing to Seon-ho who usually always ended up taking the brunt of his anger and is arguably the one he hurt the most with his schemes/quest for revenge. He will never be that simple, joyful boy in the beginning again and he will never be able to wipe the red from his ledger, neither of them will be able to, but underneath the dirt and blood there's still gold. There always will be. He finally comes home to Seon-ho.
Bang-won is true red for me due to us seeing him in that color from the start and his line about all the blood he spilled for his father seeping into his skin like tattoo ink. He's a hunter and killer and was forced to stain his hands red when killing Poeun to protect his family and his father's revolution, for which he takes the blame. Of course he has his own ambitions as well and his path to the throne and reign as King Taejong are very much drenched in blood to consolidate the work of his predecessors and lay down the unshakable foundation of a five hundred year dynasty. He thinks he's the only one fit to be King and lead Joseon to its first red rising dawn, and sacrifices everything at the altar of the throne, including his own feelings and the people he loves, even family, leaving him in a position where he is above everyone else but also tragically alone, which reminds me of what Haksan tells Ha-seon in The Crowned Clown (ep. 8, 00:18:09) about what it means to be a king that I think describes Bang-won perfectly:
"A king cannot exercise his power as he wishes. The throne he sits on is for an immoral beast, one that feasts on flesh and blood. To protect that seat and the nation, he must sacrifice all he has, even his own heart. That is his cruel destiny."
Thank you for sending me this ask - it was very fun to think about! :D 💙

Queen Wongyeong: The Kingmaker
In this episode, we’ll be going back to the foundation of the Joseon dynasty and take a look at the life of Queen Wongyeong, the primary wife of Yi Bang-won better known as King Taejong, the third king of Joseon. Queen Wongyeong shaped the Joseon dynasty from behind the scenes and was a mother to the most revered king in Korean history: King Sejong the Great. If you enjoyed this video 🙏 please…
