A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court (Penguin Classics) A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court (Penguin Classics) Paperback – February 28, 1972 by Mark Twain (Author),‎ Justin Kaplan (Introduction) --Book Condition: USED/RARE in very good condition in spite of age (beige pages). Light wear (Scratch/fold mark) When Connecticut mechanic and foreman Hank Morgan is knocked unconscious, he wakes not to the familiar scenes of nineteenth-century America but to the bewildering sights and sounds of sixth-century Camelot. Although confused at first and quickly imprisoned, he soon realises that his knowledge of the future can transform his fate. Correctly predicting a solar eclipse from inside his prison cell, Morgan terrifies the people of England into releasing him and swiftly establishes himself as the most powerful magician in the land, stronger than Merlin and greatly admired by Arthur himself. But the Connecticut Yankee wishes for more than simply a place at the Round Table. Soon, he begins a far greater struggle Editorial Reviews From School Library Journal Gr 5 Up-While Mark Twain is most often identified with his childhood home on the Mississippi, he wrote many of his enduring classics during the years he lived in Hartford, Connecticut. He had come a long way from Hannibal when he focused his irreverent humor on medieval tales, and wrote A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court. The hit on the head that sent protagonist Hank Morgan back through 13 centuries did not affect his natural resourcefulness. Using his knowledge of an upcoming eclipse, Hank escapes a death sentence, and secures an important position at court. Gradually, he introduces 19th century technology so the clever Morgan soon has an easy life. That does not stop him from making disparaging, tongue-in-cheek remarks about the inequalities and imperfections of life in Camelot. Twain weaves many of the well-known Arthurian characters into his story, and he includes a pitched battle between Morgan's men and the nobility. Kenneth Jay's narration is a mix of good-natured bonhomie for Hank and more formal diction for the arcane Olde English speakers. Appropriate music is used throughout to indicate story breaks and add authenticity to scenes. This good quality recording is enhanced by useful liner notes and an attractive case. Younger listeners may need explanations of less familiar words, and some knowledge of the Knights of the Round Table will be helpful. Libraries completing an audiobook collection of Twain titles will enjoy this nice, but not necessary, abridgement. Barbara Wysocki, Cora J. Rule Britannia is like if Peter Pan was an 80 year old woman and Never Neverland was being reverse colonized by Americans because of Brexit and Wendy was her 20 year old granddaughter going “fuck, not again” every time her grandmother opens her mouth to encourage the six orphans she adopted to to interfere with a military action, and the 3 year old they were worried wouldn’t be able to speak keeps surprising everybody by spouting profanity when they least expect it.
I am begging you to read Daphne du Maurier’s final novel

The Boy King: A Prelude
Tumblr media
excerpt from GOD'S OWN CHAMPION by Dr. K. Aa, a stunning new biography of Roderick the Terrible, himself. Armed with the recent discovery of a trove of letters sent to and from the emperor's court during his fabled reign, Dr. K. Aa has published her much-awaited new biography on the most controversial emperor in Astairan history. Available wherever books are sold. Preorder your copy, today!
EDUCATING AN EMPEROR
roderick's early life, in terms of the history annals, would appear to be a relatively quiet affair in which a little-known second son received a sterling education. in the years to come, there would be much speculation about roderick's childhood, with some historians claiming that he was undoubtedly his father's favorite -- how else could the boy have emerged w such confidence as to topple so many nations? others would cite quiet determination as his mindset -- a humble beginning overshadowed by the spectacular future, but fewer would be those few who would hit upon the truth.
the records of roderick's elder brother were detailed, drenched with near-obsessive care for a father whose favoritism would prove extreme. For this firstborn son, the finest tutors in the world were shipped from across the continent to instruct the young prince, his tutelage ranging from warcraft to statescraft, with individual scholars cultivated to instruct him in philosophy, science, alchemy, falconry, oratory, art, history, and every other pursuit a young royal might anticipate. what is less sure is the education of the heir apparent's younger brothers. did they, too, benefit from the scholastic training heaped upon their elder brother and, even, upon their elder sister?
a recent cachet of letters gives us, perhaps, a touch of insight upon the question. dated from the early part of her reign, roderick's second of many queens writes the following to her brother, godfrey of hanthom. "...and when i asked my husband whether he should suffer one man to give instruction to both his sons, when the time came for edmund and arthur to be educated, he replied that any crafty man may learn from his brother's tutors, if he cares so to do..." while the document is fragmentary, this retort does give some insight into the mind of the emperor. it seems he had already thought carefully about mining a brother's instructors for information, suggesting he may have gleaned something from his own experience of the kind.
nonetheless, the question cannot at present be known for certainty. what is certainly fact, however, is that roderick's own education, while certainly planned to be much the inferior to his brother's, was quite well attended as well, with roderick's tutors (though of less quality), instructing him on a similar variety of subjects.
this very early matter of education is the first openly observable rift between the two families of roderick's father, for it was not only lines of gender, as might be persumed by the culture in which roderick was raised, that lesser tutors were engaged: it was upon the matter of mother, for roderick and alaric were born to the old king's second wife. yet, for all the care put into his half-siblings' studies, the truth is that the surviving children of the original dynasty were all gotten on the king's second queen.
...
A KINGLY FATHER
there has been much speculation upon the relationship of roderick with his father, but with the recent discovery of his body and the CT scans run over it, it seems many of the tales -- long relegated to the status of mere myth by scholas -- may indeed be true.
most readers will already be familiar with the colorful tale of the king beating his young son half to death, each blow bloodying the child till, at last, the horrified monarch gathered his comatose boy in his arms, shrieking and wailing for what he had done. most scholars have been quick to dismiss the lurid tale as nothing more than propaganda meant to drum up some scientific explanation for the horror that would follow -- yet, it may prove just that. according to the story, the boy was comatose for three days and, when he at last awakened, was never quite the same afterwards.
his remains indicate that this may, in fact, be true, his skull itself wearing the marks of his trauma. says dr. bonespert, "There is very clear evidence of brain and skull trauma from a very young age written here in the bones, badly healed over fractures showing damage to a growing child. did the king truly knock down his own child and bash his head repeatedly against the marble floor till it ran red with blood and he wept his remorse over the boy, like the stories say? who can really know? but something terrible did happen to this person in his teen years: its right here in his bones. that much we can see for certain."
THE FIRST ASSASSINS
there is another story, as well, that might perhaps account for roderick's childhood injury, though source materials say that he was in his twenties at the time, already king and beginning his bid for empire. according to sources, roderick stood before a cheering crowd, arm raised as he made a speech upon the glory of empire. writers of the time note how his eyes shone, his voice booming with certitude: this, they said, was the very image of a king in his prime.
all, however, did not agree, it would seem, for one amongst the crowd leapt upon a ledge with bow and arrow and shot at the young king. for a moment, the writer notes in horror, the young ruler stood staring at his attacker before raising his arm and pointing one finger towards him even as blood coating roderick's whole side. "he looked an angry god," writes the witness. "and next he looked nothing at all." next thing anyone knew, the king stumbled back, collapsing from the parapet. the would-be assassin was signed and hanged, drawn, and quartered for his transgression, with the ailing young king rising from his bed to witness the execution. this was to be only the second of a series of assassination attempts, with the king's -- soon to be emperor's -- ferocity only growing with each attempt.
the first assassination attempt against his own person (as opposed to one of the many poisoning schemes perpetrated in his view against his father) was, in fact, a more intimate affair. it was roderick's first campaign following his father's death, a hard-fought war against roderick's late stepmother's home nation of antilla*, almost immediately following the death of his father. roderick, himself, had gone to the front with his first wife and future empress where they stayed in a tent together. one night, an agent tore inside, threatening roderick with a with a scimitar. fortunately for roderick, he kept a knife beneath his pillow and was awakened by his wife's scream just in time. the two men fought with roderick ultimately defeating his opponent and slaying him on the spot, but not before the assassin slashed roderick across the chest.
according to legend, realizing that the assassin's blade had been poisoned, his queen quickly sucked the wound clean and spat out the poison, saving his life, only -- the legend nearly always states -- for his neglect of her ultimately to doom her mere years later. had she doomed the rest of the world in saving his life?
but whether any of this is so cannot be said: his bones bear scars enough but where each might have originated cannot be said...

do you have any favourites parts of season 2? (I agree that the plot has been.... Thin? Non-existent?) But what are the things about this season that you've enjoyed?
hello anon! a few things i’ve enjoyed are:
-the new guest stars. watkins, hill, and raphael are knocking it out of the park. we waited longer than i wanted to to see june and dulé but hey, at least they’re here now! im already kinda attached to their characters and im pretty sure all of them are gonna get fucked over so im scared fjgkjhfdg
-just seeing all these mf characters again. ive missed them so much kjhgkdfjh i could watch them watch paint dry and i’d be okay with that bc i just MISSED THEM
-CONNIE. RESURGENCE. OMFG. i saw xosha roquemore (the actress who plays her) credited for 2x05 a couple weeks back and i FREAKED. OUT. god why do i love this narc. acab except for connie because i like her and she’s pretty (seeing her in full color and 80s style was a REVELATION)
-mo coming back ugh i missed him at the jammer group. seeing him complacent and beaten down HURT. im ready to see him fuck blair up i love blair but he’s walking away in handcuffs this season if mo has anything to say about it
-blair/harris. ok they’re cute i said it (plus they’re easily getting the most screentime out of all the couples this season which is nice bc their relationship is so much less established than the others)
-mo/dawn flashbacks mo/dawn flashbacks mo/dawn flashbacks mo/dawn flashbacks mo/dawn flashbacks!!! i knew we would be seeing their backstory but i didn’t expect it to be the first thing we saw all season!!! i love mo/dawn and i love getting backstory since i was waiting to know more about their past for so long and!! it’s here!! now we know everybody at the jammer group used to work for leighman and that’s why they hate them and we know mo and dawn go back a decade and!! it’s just so satisfying to KNOW i love to see it
-the entirety of Fore! (2x04) yassir. fucking. killed. that. shit. he was the sole writing credit for that episode, and when i saw that on the imdb page i simply knew it would be god tier. and it was! admittedly a little plotless, but that’s par for the course this season, plus it was early enough in the season to get away with it i think. the twist at the end. corky’s entrance. blair/harris. blair being an idiot. blair being a high idiot. yassir x being the king of feminism. yassir lester writing andrew’s emmy reel like that. we haven’t seen season 2B yet but 2A peaked with fore!. period. try to disagree with me. you can’t.
-ofc the 80s aesthetic that we all know and love. i saw somebody describe black monday as a period piece once and it seemed kind of ill-fitting bc it’s not set in victorian era england but yk what? it’s totally fitting. this is a period piece. the 80s slap.
-blair being the villain that we know he is. i wish they would quit stalling on this because it’s making all the characters seem monotonous and non-distinct, but i like those moments where blair snaps (“WE ARE DOING THIS” and “i am the only family you need now. just me”) andrew’s such an excellent actor and it’s fun to see this side of his range since he’s usually played really nice and wholesome (or at least not downright villainous) characters. he’s sending chills down my spine with some of the shit he’s doing and saying this season. andrew. emmy. nomination. now. GIVE IT TO ME NOW.
-momentary mo&blair resurgence (even if it’s fake). i miss mo&blair as father-son so fucking much anon you don’t even know. finding out that they were the ones clicking their heels in 2x06? i could’ve CRIED
-being right. ok this has a bit of lore but i have been STALKING the imdb page for black monday for MONTHS. bc they’ll add episode titles, or screencaps, or cast members all the time without telling anybody, and everything’s been accurate so far (so it’s not some troll lying on imdb we know that lol). specifically, in 2x09, there’s a character credited as dr. gabe egon. the tl already had suspicions that he had smth to do with conversion therapy bc there’s this one picture that sho released where you can see all this shit mo’s written on this board, and it DEFINITELY SAID CONVERSION THERAPY. and this episode comes around and roger is walking out this door that says “dr. gabe egon ~ therapy for the religiously erect” or whatever and i was like !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and then roger blurts out that it’s literally CT and i !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! this shit is in different areas for better or for worse and even if im confused and bored at the same time being pulled along for the ride is fun as hell
-the naming scheme for the episodes. i literally had no idea what they would do for the episode titles this season since there’s no countdown to black monday, but i like how it’s shit that the characters say/write. bc then a character says the episode name and you’re like !!!!!!!!!!! jfhgdfjk. plus it kinda tells you what’s going on--i knew 2x06 would be about a ponzi scheme before blair even proposed the idea in 2x05 bc the ep is titled Arthur Ponzarelli. and i knew fore! would be the episode where blair and the harrises are golfing and blair gets hit by a golf cart since “fore” is a golf term. and i know that 2x07, “who are you supposed to be?” is the weird halloween party ep where everybody looks ridiculous and ppl are def gonna be getting into it. 2x10 is titled “i don’t like mondays” and idk what that means but i bet mo says that line in the show. and 2x09 is titled “at that time” and im so scared bc that episode has a blair flashback and WHAT DOES IT MEAN WHAT DOES IT ALL MEANNNN
-more women and more women being relevant to the plot. good. it was getting a little obnoxiously man-influenced here. cmon the majority of the cast AND the majority of the directors AND the majority of the producers AND a majority of the writers AND both the creators can’t ALL be men. like pick a struggle.
whew that list was longer than i expected it to be! thanks for the ask anon! what are y’all’s favorite parts so far?

Preview panel only. Click here for full cartoon. Or see the on-site navigation tutorial. Cartoons may contain unmarked spoilers. Cartoons linked at 10:00 Central US are new. Cartoons at 22:00 are from the archive.   Thanks for reading.
[Image description: Preview panel of the cartoon at the link. Arthur and Merlin of the Arthur King Of Time And Space fairy tale arc are sitting reading. Arthur says, “How do you want to be remembered, Merlin?” Unfortunately there are not image descriptions at the main Hero Of Three Faces site. End description.]
This is the Hero of Three Faces season finale; summer hiatus begins today. New updates will probably resume starting August 17 as usual. Archive cartoons will be featured on the front page till then starting tomorrow, selected by no particular criteria and on no particular schedule, as usual.
You may have noticed that several months ago the header on the captions on these link posts began specifying that link posts at 10:00 US CT are to new updates and link posts at 22:00 US CT are to “reruns”/”archive” cartoons. Previously during summer hiatus I’ve made 10:00 rerun link posts but going forward there will be reruns only at 22:00 even during summer hiatus.

evan/wally/hartley 2: the sad one
this one got started bc i wanted more evan/wally/hartley but my brain likes to churn out angst and bad prose. it's evan-centric b/c his backstory makes me TOO EMO.
tlfady chapter 8
this is going to get done at some point. it will in all likelihood be a therapy session because that's what i do when i don't know where to go. at the very least, dinah will be in it because i love her!
king john but everyone lives
look. i have no excuse for this other than prince arthur DESERVED BETTER. "i would i were your son, so you would love me, hubert!" BI CT H I'M SAD
bittersweet self indulgent lord!batman/jlu!wally for pray you love remember
this has been stuck in my brain for a while, and is just a blatant excuse for me to let them kiss, for lord batman to deal with his love for lords!wally that will go forever unsaid, and for jlu!wally to deel with his possibly unrequited feelings for jlu!bruce. yes i do have a soundtrack for this in my head.
r&j but this time where benvolio goes after 4.1
i'm sad

To me, it's funny reading about all these detractors when back in the day there were the same rants and anger at the Peter Jackson movies. The same ones that 'feel' like Tolkien today and 'captured' the spirit of the books. Yes, those same movies got raked over the coals by the fandom because some character didn't fit their vision of how they should look. Legolas shouldn't be blond, Cate Blanchett isn't beautiful enough, why is Agent Smith playing Elrond...Frodo shouldn't be played by an American...on and on. The complaints lessened over time, and I'm sure the negativity around this show will as well. People who don't like it will move on and let the rest of us have fun with it. This won't last forever. We'll have our own safe fandom space soon enough.
For the record, we have very little 'Tolkien' lore for the second age. We have the appendices, which are little more than an outline, and Christopher Tolkien's best guess as to what his father wanted as he waded through the notes he left behind and even then CT wished he had done some things differently. This show is one version of a mythology, just as we have many versions of Robin Hood and King Arthur. If it helps to think of it as fanfic, that's fine, but if you like it, you don't have to apologize for it. I'm not. If you don't like it, have a good life and I hope you find something you do enjoy.
Am I the only one sad about the Rings of Power situation in social media in general, bit specifically on Tumblr? The show has become so controversial that almost every single post is about people hating it or defending it, there is no space for anything else. I have always come to Tumblr to check out all the funny posts, memes, metas, fanart, etc of the things I like, but with Rings of Power the beef is so extreme that there is no space for creativity and fun, just everybody's takes. Could we please stop arguing and just let the fandom create content and enjoy themselves? It's a shame that there doesn't seem to be a place to actually enjoy the show anywhere

Mark Lamoureux: May 2019 Poet of the Month
29 Cheesburgers: #31 Deluxe Bleu Cheese Burger Plate, Cozy Soup ‘N Burger, Astor Place, NYC
            for Bill Corbett.
  Bill,
I go to the second church of the day, as I must,
            alone, & above
the nave of coffee urns—something I never noticed
the handful of times I have come to this place—
is an actual backlit panel of stained glass
depicting two women wrapped in coiling cloth
            of cobalt blue proffering
a cheeseburger on a plate
            while their lower heaven-stretched arms
cradle a ceramic chalice of Cozy soup,
echoing the similarly light-filled
windows of St. Mark’s on the Bowery from
whence I am come from your memorial, my eyes
            stung with tears—
 now at the end
as at the beginning
when I first crossed your threshold
some fifteen years ago, just out of hospital,
only days before having watched
the huge ruddy man in the other bed,
Chaucer’s Miller, toss the orderlies around the room like rag dolls,
howling & sobbing like an infant because he didn’t want to take
the pills that would make him heavy & dull
until finally subduing him they put them down
his throat & held his chin like a cat’s & then poured water down
his gullet from a ridiculously tiny
            paper cup.
Fifteen minutes later I heard him
spit the unswallowed pills onto the floor.  I didn’t take mine
either.  He begged me to bring him a plastic model car
& glue             please he said
            please;
I taught the empty-eyed kid
who paced to one end of the ward & back
again all day, all day to make poems
by picking random words out of the Reader’s Digest
Condensed Books they kept in all the rooms.
Why did you arrange them like that?
                                                                        I didn’t
that’s the order I picked them in.  Fair enough
            poetry is the music
of chance; just days later I would be in your parlor
in Columbus Square & I decided to trust
            that poetry
would save my life & you were the king
of poetry.
Earlier today I am at the Wahrol retrospective
at the Whitney for the second time, missing
my daughter, who knew the prints from Andy Land
the little book I bought her, signing more moo cow
more Andy Soup; please
please;
with my backpack with my laptop & keys
& presents I bought her in the coat check I can’t shake
the feeling something’s missing;
I lose track of Geof & Karen in the sprawling
exhibition, take a picture of myself in the reflection
of a self-portrait of Andy with a skull on his head—
memento mori I tell myself.
                                                            Something’s missing.
Somehow I lose the plastic tag with the number on it
to retrieve my coat & the backpack that I got cheap
because it has somebody else’s initials—IQZ—
            monogrammed on the front.
                                                            Something’s missing.
The first time I was here I stood with Amabel
in front of Crowd Scene.  Peoples she cooed
peoples &
just a few feet away there was Laurie Anderson;
I wanted to ask her to kiss my baby but couldn’t
summon the gumption—
Lou Reed is dead said a voice in my head.
You are dead too; I wanted you to kiss my baby
too.
I used to drink when I felt sad,
which was all the time,
but now I buy things for my daughter instead & today before
your memorial I bought her a little plastic watch
with an owl on the face,
four pairs of little socks with the Peel Slowly
& See banana on them, a spherical strawberry-scented kitty
ball that slowly re-inflates itself
after being squishes & A is for Andy written by him
& his mama.
                                                Something’s missing.
Before I really met you I knew you
from the photograph on the cover
of New & Selected Poems: smiling at the camera
in black & white; behind you a telescope
pointed out the glowing window
toward the sky.  I recognized you once outside
of Out of Town news in Harvard Square
& said Hello Bill like I knew you & you said Hello like
            I was someone you recognized
            but I wouldn’t find myself
at your table for another handful of years,
just out of hospital, a week
after John Wieners died.
I turned 47 last week & bought myself
the Complete Village Vanguard Recordings
of the Bill Evans Trio & listened to Scott LaFaro
playing “Gloria’s Step” over & over again—
the last recording he would make before he
died just 11 days later & I wondered what you thought
of the “You Must Believe in Spring” poem after the song
on Evans’ final that I sent you
just before you died last spring.  Memory gorges
            every single thing
you wrote in a “Shower in June,”
printed on a broadside with a photo
of Pres outside the Five Spot you inscribed
            “For Mark at Aaron’s 30th, 2004”
which hangs just beside my front door & will be the first thing
I see when I exit the cab & unlock the door to my house,
quietly, so I won’t wake Amabel
who will be sleeping upstairs.  Memory gorges
            every single thing.
                                                Something’s missing.
I will want to listen to the Evans records again,
but will need to wait until morning
because the sleeping baby; I will need to wait
until morning to give my daughter the socks, the kitty,
            the book, everything
but the watch which I will save for her birthday
in May & I admit it seems a little wrong
to give a toddler a watch—there’s a point
at which time becomes the enemy,
but I couldn’t resist the little pink owl.  Owls
            were also the favorite
of my maternal grandma Mabel for whom
Amabel is named & owls
            have been appearing everywhere
lately—in an Arthur Sze poem on the wall
of the subway I took downtown,
            “Coming Soon—the Owl
Café” on a sign on the smudged-out windows
of a storefront I passed when I was walking
from the Whitney to your memorial
in the Bowery.  I guess my point is
            the dead remain
in our lives in ways we don’t expect
or understand.  A few nights ago two postcards
from you & Gerrit that had been there
since you were both alive fell off
my refrigerator & landed face up
at my feet—there must be scores of postcards
from you squirrelled away in & behind
books on my bookshelves & who knows
where else—I never really file anything
away & I guess now maybe I understand why.
            Memory gorges
every single thing.      Something’s missing.
This may be the longest poem
I have ever written, meandering, discursive,
I guess probably because I don’t want it
to end because that means somehow this
day in which I said goodbye to you will have ended
but now
the train has pulled into the station
& the conductor is telling me to please exit the train
we all want to go home.
I pack my IQZ backpack quickly
& panic out on the platform.
                                                Something’s missing
but the doors close & the train rumbles
            off into the future.
