Introduction: Pre-Departure Entry
Wednesday, December 18, 2019.
Hello there, and welcome to my Digital Travel Journal for my study abroad experience for the Winter 2020 term. My name is Mira Baum - a junior at the University of Maryland, College Park studying Kinesiology - and I will be traveling around Australia from December 31, 2019 - January 22, 2020 to learn about Australian sport culture. Unfortunately, I do not have prior knowledge about Australian culture nor Australian relations when it comes to sports, so I am most excited to become more knowledgable about these subjects from first-hand experiences. Therefore, I hope to come out of this program with more knowledge, greater self-knowledge, new friends, and (of course) a tan! During this grand experience, I will be visiting Brisbane, Melbourne, and Sydney. I think I am most nervous about falling in love with these cities and feeling like I did not fully immerse myself/spend enough time in each of them. Hopefully that is not the case. But anyways, stay tuned for blog posts and photographs of my experience while studying abroad down under! Before I leave, I am going to read a bunch of articles about this beautiful country. Pre-Departure Blog
Hello! My name is Emily Pappas and I am a sophomore Kinesiology major at the University of Maryland. This blog is going to provide a little insight into what Australia and the sporting industry there is really like. I will reflect on lectures and meetings we attend, activities we do and sporting events we see.
What I know about Australia so far is that their more unique sports are rugby, cricket, Australian football, and netball. They also have a lot of tennis and basketball events as well. I know that sport is a big part of Australian culture, as it allows locals to feel pride in their country and provides large amounts of entertainment.
On this trip, I am extremely excited to take surfing lessons at Bondi Beach because it is one of the most beautiful beaches in the world and I have only tried surfing once before and I have been waiting to try it again. I am also very excited to see the Great Barrier Reef, as it has always been on my bucket list and I know that it won’t be around for that much longer. I am nervous about the fact that I don’t really know anyone going on the trip, so I am going to be relying on my ability to make friends! What I hope to learn over the course of this trip is a more expanded knowledge of Australian sport culture and how it ties into the rest of society, which hopefully I get from experiencing it firsthand. I know a lot about how American sport ties into American culture from taking prior classes, however I am interested to see how it compares to Australian sport culture.
Can’t wait to land in Brisbane and start off this adventure!

Last Full Day in Brisbane :(
Yesterday was our last full day in Brisbane. I’m currently writing from the plane to Melbourne; kind of risky since I’m very well known for my motion sickness. What can I say, I’m being adventurous on this program. In the morning we went kayaking in the Brisbane River. Conor, being an amazing friend, warned me that there are bull sharks in the river. So I am pretty scared of sharks, especially since I don’t normally vacation where they are present. Of course when we get to the river, the workers inform us that they have never seen any kind of shark in the water, just tiny fish. I believed them but I did everything I could to avoid falling in the water. My ballet skills came in handy when we were trying to stand on the kayak, so now I am a level on kayaker (yay).
The rest of the day we listened to Dr. Rebecca Olive present a lecture on women surfing in Australia. Even though I am not a kinesiology major, it is still very interesting to see how people of different cultures interact with each other and how that impacts their ways of life. I felt so invested in her presentation since I am a woman who has participated in competitive swimming since I was a young child. To say the least, her lecture is making me think twice about how what I wear while training or on the beach influences how people interact with me. I’ve always felt comfortable in my swimwear, but it brings to my attention how the male gaze can impact how people of all genders and sexual preferences see me.
One thing that I have been struggling through this trip is my anxiety. I struggle with it at home too, but it is more manageable when I am around people I know. Sometimes it’s hard for me to be as outspoken as the other students on the trip and it gets me down. I’ve been talking to my friends at home about it and googling strategies to help. The main suggestion was take deep breaths when it gets bad and tell some of the people I am closer with so that they understand why I may be more reserved at some times than others. Since we are traveling to a new city today, I decided to give it a go. I got great feedback from the first person I told and she even told me that I was doing a good job of being social. Part of my anxiety is feeling like I am always different or outside of the loop compared to everyone else in the group. I am feeling a lot better now so hopefully it’ll just get better from here.

To determine if an internationally educated physiotherapist’s training is not substantially different from that of a Canadian-educated physiotherapist, the following five criteria must be met:
Verification of identity through authentic and valid documentation
Completion of a university level, entry-to-practice degree in physiotherapy
Successful completion of a minimum of 1025 hours of supervised clinical education
Fluency in English or French
Knowledge of the practice of physiotherapy within the Canadian healthcare system
How do Canadians Fare on the Physiotherapy Competency Exam?
Since Australian physiotherapy programs are considered among the world’s best, Canadian students who have graduated from an Australian physiotherapy school have the best pass rates on both the written and clinical exams! Here is an example of the pass rates for 2011–2016:
