Guardian's review of Oct. 7 documentary sparks outrage over 'demonizing Gazans' comments
by Miri Weissman
The Guardian has found itself at the center of a heated controversy following its review of "One Day in October," a documentary focusing on the October 7 Hamas attacks on Kibbutz Be'eri. The review, published recently, has sparked significant backlash across social media platforms, particularly on X.
The Guardian's review, written by Stuart Jeffries, described the film as "composed of heartbreaking survivor interviews along with disturbing footage from phones and security cameras. Camera footage from a 4x4, time-stamped 8:01 AM, includes audio from hysterically excited unseen terrorists as they race to join the killing spree. 'It's time for the nation of Jihad! … I swear to God! … We'll slaughter them! … I wanna livestream this! We've got to show the folks back home!' A comrade assures the speaker they already are: Hamas massacred Israelis for viewers in real time."
It suggested that while the documentary might help explain Israel's actions in Gaza and Lebanon, it fails to provide insight into Hamas's motives for the attacks. "If you want insight into why Israel is doing what it is doing in Gaza and Lebanon, this film may help. If you want to understand why Hamas murdered civilians, though, One Day in October won't help."
"Indeed, it does a good job of demonizing Gazans, first as testosterone-crazed Hamas killers, later as shameless civilian looters, asset-stripping the kibbutz while bodies lay in the street and the terrified living hid," Jeffries continued.
Jeffries compared the documentary to Cy Endfield's "Zulu," suggesting that "One Day in October," if unwittingly, "follows the same pattern" of othering. He argued that "All our sympathies are with relatable Israelis" while "Hamas terrorists are a generalized menace on CCTV, their motives beyond One Day in October's remit."
The review concluded by juxtaposing the death toll: "101 kibbutzniks and 31 soldiers were killed at Be'eri on 7 October. Of 32 hostages seized, five were murdered, while three remain in Gaza. So far, since 7 October, 40,000 Gazans have died."
The reviewer's critique of the film has led to a wave of criticism on social media. One X user responded, "Dear @guardian, if you wanted to see Gazans painted as peace-loving citizens, then perhaps a documentary about the massacre of Kibbutz Be'eri on Oct 7th wasn't for you. Sorry if you feel that portraying those who murdered, stole and celebrated the deadliest day for Jews since the Holocaust as 'murderers and looters' is an inaccurate portrayal."

On October 7th, as Hamas terrorists were rampaging through Kibbutz Be'eri—murdering, kidnapping, and destroying everything in their path—69-year-old Kinneret Gat stood her ground.
When a terrorist attempted to take her, she defiantly stuck her tongue out at him, an act of resistance captured by the terrorist's camera. This became one of the final images of her.
This image serves as a powerful symbol of the extraordinary courage displayed by the residents of Be'eri and Southern Israel, who faced brutal terror with unwavering bravery.
May the memory of Kinneret and all of the victims be a blessing.

That should probably read "and if statements given by people held in captivity are made under duress".
Like, yes that's a large possibility given these are IOF soldiers, I'm just saying it still needs to be written specifically.

JULY 7 2024 - Israeli media Haaretz finally confirms that on October 7th, three Israeli army facilities used the Hannibal directive, an Israeli military policy that dictates the use of maximum force to prevent the capture of an IDF soldier by enemy forces, including the preemptive killing of their own soldiers in order to prevent them from being taken hostage.
Haaretz also confirms because of the Hannibal Directive, the IDF indiscriminately launched mortar shells, tank fire and artillery fire at anything moving in Gaza's direction, close to the communities of Be’eri & Kfar Aza, without knowing how many soldiers, hostages, or civilians were there, which likely killed civilians and hostages. Haaretz notes on instance where the IDF killed 13 hostages in the house of Pessi Cohen at Kibbutz Be'eri due to indiscriminate shelling.
This comes eight months after Haaretz had originally wrote articles labelling independent journalists "conspiracy theorists" and "denialists" for investigating and suggesting that Israel used the Hannibal Directive on October 7th.

Honestly I just hope all of you evil zionist fucks die. It's so sickening how you just lie and lie and lie to kill people who just want to stay in their homes.
It's disgusting that y'all have the audacity to use apparent antisemitism as an excuse for genocide. Anyone with a functioning brain can see that Israel doesn't represent all Jewish people.
Ok I'm going to go through this hate anon sentence by sentence. imo anon hate in general is cowardice because you'll tell me to kms but not show your face? Coward. Look me in the eyes as you threaten and maybe then I'll take you seriously.
So! first sentance.
'Honestly I just hope all of you evil zionists fucks die.'
What do you think I did that makes me evil? Or are you just saying that because you're racist?
Do you even know what zionist means? Yeah I'm a zionist, yeah I'm proud of it, no you're not using it correctly. You're using it as if it's a slur, it's really really not, every zionist i know is proud of that fact
Hope all you like it's not gonna make it a reality
If you're looking to speak to all zionists, this is not the place. I am a single person who cannot spread your message even if I wanted to
Second sentance:
'It's so sickening how you just lie and lie and lie to kill people who just want to stay in their homes.'
Tbh if i could lie online I wouldn't be here
I didn't know the act of lying was actively killing people, pretty sure that's what weapons do
You think Israelis don't want to stay in their homes?? 134 hostages in Gaza who'll be happy to be back home, even though most of their homes were burned to the ground and destroyd by Hamas. So many families stuck living in single rooms because their homes were also burned to the ground and destroyd by Hamas. People who evacuated their homes from fear of being hit by rockets sent by Hamas.
We're the liars? Check again who bombed their own hospital, killing 471 of their own people, injuring 314 more, then blamed it on the IDF. Spoilers: it was Hamas.
I don't remember myself killing anyone. Again, I am not all of Israel, I am a single person.
Onwards to third sentance!
'I'ts disgusting that y'all have the audacity to use apparent antisemitism as an excuse for genocide.'
What genocide? Do you know what genocide means? It's against a race. Not a land. The Holocaust was a genocide, because no matter where the jewish people went the Nazis followed. this isn't a genocide. This isn't against the Palestinians, if they leave Gaza they will not be followed and killed. Stop calling what's going on here by names that don't fit.
'Apparent'? It's not apparent, the antisemitism jews face all over the world and have faced all over history is very true and real and painful.
Who's using antisemitism as an excuse? I've never seen anyone do that, I genuinly want some sources for that
Fourth (and last) sentence!
'Anyone with a functioning brain can see that Israel doesn't represent all Jewish people.'
I??? Never?? Said that israel represents all Jewish people???? Of fucking course it doesn't????
33.1% of Israel's population are atheists (Hilonim), 18.1% are Muslim, 1.9% are Christian, 1.6% are Druze, 4.8% are unclassified or other. Only 40.4% are Jewish, that's less then half.
There are 6.3 million Jews in the USA, that's almost half of the total 15.7 million in the whole world. Israel itself has 7.2 million Jews.
Then this means that a great chunk of the worlds population don't have a functioning brain, seeing the fact that jews all over the world are receiving hate, threats, and violence because of what's happening in Israel and Gaza
What I really wonder about here is that you said that anyone with a functioning brain can see that, yet you can see it even though your brain doesn't seem to be functioning.
In conclusion:
Go outside and touch some grass, pet a cat, watch the sunset, take a shower, take care of yourself, go to therapy, and for G-d's sake, stop spreading hate and misinformation. You are not immune to propaganda.

I was stopped at an army checkpoint telling that there is terrorists on this road, killing people, anyone that goes on this road. But I knew that I want to drive anyway. I knew that this point there are people dying.
So, this guy came with a pickup truck shouting from the car, "listen, people are being butchered in Be'eri. It's a small community. It's a kibbutz. And I just jumped with my friend. We jumped on the pickup truck and across through this army post stuff.
We crossed it and we fly down the road. It took us around seven minutes' drive. We saw -- we literally saw civilian cars that woke up Saturday morning weekend, you know, going out to nature to hike, to bike, to different activities -- left on the road, dead civilians, full of families, kids, mothers, babies. All of them are shot dead in their cars.
And I'm not talking about one or two. Dozens of cars all over the road.
We are stopping at outside Kibbutz Alumim. It's a small community, let's say around a thousand people are living there in a shared life. And right outside Kibbutz Alumim, we are encountering a Hamas terrorist group or a squad shooting at us. This is the first interaction I had.
I saw a dead soldier with a rifle. It's a machine gun next to him. I took the machine gun. I took some bullets and magazines from the special forces that were near me. And together, we decided to charge into, to go to a battle with these stowaways, to stop them to enter the kibbutz.
I thought we were just fighting with people that are stopping us to drive to Be'eri, not knowing that we are saving Alumim. But we had a fight outside of Alumim, right outside the fence, the perimeter fence.
We managed to kill all the terrorists that were there. We had face-to-face battles. We had grenades throwing at us. We didn't have grenades.
We came from home to defend people. We were outnumbered, outgunned, but we crushed them in that fight. We were fighting to save life. They were fighting to take life. So, I guess the first, you know, trumps the other.
We finished that around three hours of tough battle. We hopped on the jeeps and drove to Be'eri, really dangerous driving. It's a few minutes' drive from one community to another. It was surreal, it's like a movie. Smoke everywhere. Shooting everywhere, from every bush or behind the tree you can have a terrorist with an AK-47 or an RPG shooting at you.
But we are driving. We have one mission: to go to Be'eri and to save lives, keep saving lives. On the entry to Kibbutz Be'eri, we've seen horrific sights. What happened there? Hamas took time of killing, brutally killing people, torturing, raping in the most -- it's hard for me to say the word -- "creative" ways that you can imagine.
At that point, already the army started to come to get a clear picture. People came from their homes, geared up and came, but we were special forces. So a lot of them were giving first response in Be'eri, but they were waiting for us as people that are highly trained for us to go in. And we did.
We got in Be'eri. And Be'eri was a... was a piece of hell.
