"LOST" Retrospect: "Who Ordered the Dharma Initiative Purge?"
Tumblr media
Years ago, I had a written an article that speculated on which character from the ABC series, "LOST", was responsible for an incident called "the Dharma Purge". After a few re-watches of the series, I wrote this revision of the ARTICLE.
"LOST" RETROSPECTIVE: "WHO ORDERED THE DHARMA INITIATIVE PURGE?"
Seven years ago, I had written this article about a major incident on the ABC television series, "LOST". This incident happened to focus on the murders or "Purge" of the scientific research organization known as the Dharma Initiative. It happened on December 19, 1992; nearly twelve years before the series began and before the crash of Oceanic Airlines 815 flight.
In the Season Five episode, (5.10) "He's Our You", Oceanic Flight 815 survivor and later, time traveler Sayid Jarrah tried to murder young Ben Linus in 1977. In the following episode, another Oceanic time traveler, Dr. Jack Shephard, refused to treat the badly wounded Ben, who was near death. Eventually, two other time traveling castaways, James "Sawyer" Ford and Kate Austen, had taken Ben to the Others aka the Hostiles aka the Natives, a group of island inhabitants who served as its protectors on the behalf of the main protector Jacob, for treatment via Dr. Juliet Burke's instructions. Within a decade-and-a-half, Ben ended up ousting future billionaire Charles Widmore as leader of the Others.
Ever since the series had first aired, many fans had been uncertain of when Ben's tenure as the Others' leader had began - before or after the Purge. As I had stated earlier, the Purge occurred in December 1992, on the same day as Ben's birthday and during the same month as the Others' rejection of Widmore as their leader. Many fans and television critics had automatically assumed Ben had ordered the Purge. I have heard comments that compared Ben to Adolf Hitler. I have also heard comments that compared Ben’s younger self to a "young Hitler". Many people have claimed that it was Ben who had ordered the deaths of the Dharma Initiative members. However, I have my doubts.
During Seasons Three and Four, Ben had offered contradicting comments on whether or not he had ordered the Dharma Initiative Purge. In (3.23) "Through the Looking Glass", he had claimed responsibility of the Purge to Jack:
"Not so long ago, Jack. I made a decision that took the lives of over forty people in a single day"
Unfortunately, Ben had contradicted this claim in two other episodes. In the Season Three episode, (3.20) "The Man Behind the Curtain", he had said this to Oceanic survivor John Locke, while he displayed the remains of Dharma members at a mass grave:
"This is where I came from, John. These are my people. The Dharma Initiative. They came here seeking harmony, but they couldn't even co-exist with the Island's original inhabitants. And when it became clear that one side had to go, one side had to be purged, I did what I had to do. I was one of the people that was smart enough to make sure that I didn't end up in that ditch. Which makes me considerably smarter than you, John."
Ben never claimed responsibility for ordering the Purge to Locke. He had confessed to participating in the Purge. That same episode made it clear that his participation involved killing his abusive father, Dharma Initiative worker, Roger Linus. In fact, Ben also made the same thing clear in the Season Four episode, (4.11) "Cabin Fever", when he had the following conversation with another Oceanic castaway, Hugo "Hurley" Reyes:
HURLEY: So... This is where you shot Locke and left him for dead, huh? BEN: Yes, Hugo, I was standing right where you are now when I pulled the trigger. Should have realized at the time that it was pointless, but... I really wasn't thinking clearly. [Hurley steps back a little] HURLEY: Is that why you killed all these people, too? BEN: I didn't kill them. HURLEY: Well, if the Others didn't wipe out the Dharma Initiative -- BEN: They did wipe them out, Hugo, but it wasn't my decision. HURLEY: Then whose was it? BEN: Their leader's. HURLEY: But I thought you were their leader. BEN: Not always.
Interesting. He had admitted to trying to kill Locke in "The Man Behind the Curtain". But he denied being the one who had ordered the Purge. Also, Ben had been truthful when he told Hurley that he had not always been the Others' leader. The series had featured three other leaders - the ageless Richard Alpert (who eventually became the future leaders' advisor), Eloise Hawking and Widmore. Although some fans remain convinced that Ben had ordered the Purge, there are a good number of fans who hold Widmore responsible.
Thanks to a flashback in the Season Five episode called (5.12) "Dead Is Dead" - viewers learned that Widmore had definitely been the leader of the Others back in 1988. And in another Season Four episode called (4.09) "The Shape of Things to Come", viewers learned in a flash forward scene set in London that Ben had taken the leadership of the Others away from Widmore:
WIDMORE: I know who you are, boy. What you are. I know that everything you have you took from me. So... Once again I ask you: Why are you here? BEN: I'm here, Charles, to tell you that I'm going to kill your daughter. Penelope, is it? And once she's gone... once she's dead... then you'll understand how I feel. And you'll wish you hadn't changed the rules. [Widmore shifts in his bed.] WIDMORE: You'll never find her. [Ben turns to leave.] WIDMORE: That island's mine, Benjamin. It always was. It will be again.
I found it interesting that Widmore had regarded the island as "his". And there were other aspects of Widmore that I found interesting. The Season Five episode, (5.03) "Jughead", had revealed Widmore as a member of the Others, as far back as 1954 (when he was seventeen years-old). As one of the Others, Widmore (along with Richard and Hawking) had participated in a previous purge - that of U.S. Army personnel, who had brought a hydrogen bomb nicknamed "Jughead" with them to the island. On other occasions, Widmore had this inclination to kill anyone he deemed a threat to the island's secrecy. He killed a fellow Other to prevent the latter from leading Locke, Sawyer and Juliet to Richard's location in 1954. The 1988 flashback from "Dead Is Dead" revealed Ben's refusal to kill Danielle Rousseau and her baby, Alex. Instead, he claimed Alex as his child and threatened Danielle to stay away. This decision had angered Widmore, who had expected Ben to kill both. Why were Danielle and Alex's deaths that important to Widmore? Ironically, Widmore finally got his way regarding Danielle and Alex, thanks to Martin Keamy, the mercenary he had sent to the island to snatch Ben in Season Four.
So, when did Ben Linus replace Charles Widmore as leader of the Others? Before December 19, 1992? Or after? The photograph below from "The Man Behind the Curtain" hints that Ben had remained a worker for the DHARMA Initiative during that period, despite joining the Others sometime in the 1980s:
Tumblr media
But had Ben assumed leadership of the Others by then? If not, does that mean Charles Widmore was still leading the Others in December 1992? Both the LOSTPEDIA and the WIKIPEDIA sites claimed that Richard Alpert had led the Others' purge against the Dharma Initiative in 1992. But neither site made it clear who had ordered the Purge. And "Dead Is Dead" never gave a clear date on Widmore's exile.
One would assume my choice for the man responsible for ordering the Purge would be Widmore. And you would be right. There seemed a good deal of evidence making him responsible. He had already participated in an earlier purge back in 1954. Ben had revealed time and again his willingness to use violence - even kill those he deemed a threat to himself or for emotional reasons. But the series had also revealed Widmore's willingness to do the same and especially kill in the name of protecting the island. And that included ordering Ben to kill an emotionally unstable Danielle Rousseau and her infant child. Widmore had also sent the murderous Martin Keamy to the island in late Season Three-Season Four to snatch Ben. He had claimed to Locke in (5.07) "The Life and Death of Jeremy Bentham" that he had done so to give Locke the opportunity to become the Others' new leader. Yet, his words to Locke contradicted his words to Ben in London, when he had claimed the island as "his". This scene had occurred nearly a year or more after the events of Season Four.
There is also the matter of whether Keamy had another agenda - namely to kill any of the Oceanic survivors that remained. In "Cabin Fever" he had demanded Sayid reveal the number of other Oceanic survivors and their location. Fortunately, the latter had refused. In a confrontation with the freighter's Captain Gault, Keamy revealed his intentions to "torch" the island. Some claimed that this had been Keamy's angry reaction to his men being attacked by the Smoke Monster. Yet, in (4.08) "Meet Kevin Johnson", Ben had accused the freighter crew of plans to snatch him and kill the island's inhabitants. The only freighter personnel in the room - spiritualist Miles Straume - had remained unusually silent. In the following episode, (4.09) "The Shape of Things to Come", Miles claimed that Keamy and his men were around to serve as security guards for a captured Ben. But there was the revelation that Widmore had set up a false location for the missing Oceanic 815 plane - with a plane wreck and dead bodies included. This is merely an assumption of mine, but I believe Widmore had sent Keamy to not only snatch Ben, but kill the remaining Oceanic survivors as well to maintain the narrative. I found a good deal of clues that led me to suspect Widmore had ordered the Dharma Purge.
After watching the series more than once, I find it increasingly difficult to hold Ben responsible for the Purge. His actions against the Oceanic castaways had featured spying, kidnapping, harassment, threats and manipulation. He rarely resorted to murder - aside from his attempt to kill Locke and his order to kill Sayid, Jin Kwon and Bernard Nader during the events in the Season Three finale, (3.23) "Through the Looking Glass, Part 2". If Ben was truly capable of ordering the Purge, he would have wiped out (or tried) the Oceanic survivors after getting Jack to remove the tumor from his spine. The man had proved incapable of following Widmore's orders to kill Danielle and Alex.
In the end, viewers know that Charles Widmore had been the leader of the Others in 1988-89, when he had ordered Ben Linus to kill Danielle Rosseau and her infant daughter. Viewers know that Ben had refused. Viewers also know that Richard Alpert had led a group of Others in the Purge against the U.S. Army in 1954. He also led the Others' purge against the Dharma Initiative on December 19, 1992. On that same date, Ben killed his father, Roger Linus, in a similar manner – by toxic gas. And viewers know that Ben had eventually replaced Widmore and exiled the latter off the island. Personally, I suspect Widmore had ordered the Purge against Dharma. But I suspect it was an order he had not issued lightly, given the number of years the Others had been in conflict with the Dharma Initiative.
But I cannot say with any authority that Widmore had ordered the Dharma Initiative Purge. If we only knew exactly when Widmore had been exiled, perhaps this mystery of the Purge will finally be cleared.

Who should play Clayface in the DCU?
Tumblr media
After a wild curveball pick for the third movie in the DCU, James Gunn has announced Clayface will be coming to the big screen in a big way after Creature Commandos.
Clayface will premiere in Fall 2026, and will be a horror thriller tragedy written by Mike Flanagan of The Haunting of Hill House Fame.
Apparently Flanagan is a big fan of Batman: The Animated Series, so we can expect the character to be similar to that version, an actor turned big monster made of goo.
Tumblr media
While this is an unexpected film, I do love that the DCU has been a mix of classic DC characters like Superman & oddball choices like this and Creature Commandos. It feels like a choice made because of an exciting story instead of obligation. That being said, this character is going to need a good actor to make the story work.
I have a couple of ideas of who could be The Batman's newest villain. But before we get into my picks, as always let's look at Stipulations.
Legacy of Batman Villains
Tumblr media
Unlike most superhero villains, Batman villains have a reputation in Hollywood to be more nuanced, and bigger named actors often will take them as meaty roles. We recently got a sequel to Joker, and a whole television show dedicated the Penguin that got universal acclaim.
Tumblr media
Though Clayface hasn't been done on the big screen yet, his association to the Dark Knight means we can definitely get a big name actor to portray the character.
Already in the DCU
Tumblr media
Clayface has already been confirmed via the trailers that he will appear in some capacity in Creature Commandos.
Whether this is the same person we see in the movie, who is to say?
This version is played by Alan Tudyk, who could potentially reprise the role in the film, but given he is already playing Doctor Phosphorus & Will Magnus, for now I'll look to other actors.
Tumblr media
Characteristics
Tumblr media
The version I am going with and the DCU is likely going with is Basil Karlo, a B list actor who becomes disfigured, and undergoes treatment to fix his face, which makes him into the monster he is.
He is dramatic, tragic, and sympathetic. He should have a sadness to him, and the range to play a villain and a man turning into a monster. Other than that, we have a lot of range of actors. Basil can look like anyone, so really any body is on the table.
So let's get started.
3. Kevin Durand
Tumblr media
An actor who really impressed me this year was Kevin Durand, specifically in Abigail & Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes. Durand has a physicality and charisma to him when playing a villain. I think watching him tragically become something else would be a lot of fun, and I think more than any other actor on this list, he definitely has the voice for it.
What particularly impressed me was his motion capture performance of Proximus Ceasar in Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes. I can see Durand using those skills to bring the monstrous Clayface to life.
Tumblr media
If I had a gripe, he may be a little too clean, at least for Clayface. But if they ever needed a Sportsmaster I'd know exactly who I'd call. I like him, but he's not my favorite.
Tumblr media
2. Jesse Plemons
Tumblr media
No one plays a bad guy like Plemons.
If we're going for the award noms, Plemons could easily bring the acting chops to a role like this. He can be scary, empathetic, sad, and downright evil.
I can see Plemons as Karlo continue to push himself, not knowing what he is becoming. Of all the actors here, he may do tragic better than any of them.
Tumblr media
My main concern is, can we root for him? Does him constantly being the villain make it less sad when he inevitably becomes the monster?
Also of the three, Clemons doesn't really have the voice for Clayface. Sure they can adjust it with technology but it isn't the same.
I'm not sure if Plemons is the right man for this job, but if he got the chance, I'd love to see him take a stab it.
1. Peter Dinklage
Tumblr media
If we'd like to merge acting ability of Plemons with the tragedy of charisma of Durand, Peter Dinklage takes this easily.
Peter Dinklage feels like an actors actor, which is exactly what we need here. Someone who can steal every scene he's in, someone we can root for and believe his transformation.
He's proven multiple times he can play tragic and a villain. We know he will do big roles in Sci-Fi or Fantasy, such as Bolivar Trask, Eitri, Scourge and Tyrion.
Tumblr media
He's done Shakespeare, motion capture, comedy, and even is set to play the Toxic Avenger: A Man who get's horribly disfigured and becomes a hero. Make him a villain and more tragic, that IS Basil Karlo.
This is my Clayface.
Tumblr media
Thank you for reading! If you like this, be sure to follow me on all my socials here! And let me know what you think: who should play Clayface in the DCU?

🫀synopsis. Kevin gets lost in the sauce.
🫀 warnings. Awkward teenagers. Bad writing.
🫀 playlist. Track one. Track two. Track three.
“Hey, you,” Kevin greeted, letting himself fall onto y/n’s bed. It had been y/n’s sixth month at the home, meaning that he was basically required to get her something to celebrate the days she lived.
Y/n smiled and closed her book. “What’s up, Kevin?” It was not abnormal for one of the two to show up in the other’s room. Honestly, Kevin and y/n were some of the closest friends of the people in the house. A classic case of ‘joined-at-the-hip’ if you asked Dr. Stanton.
Kevin wiggled his eyebrows. “Well… it’s your sixth month here, so I uh… I got you something.” Kevin revealed a small box wrapped in newspaper. “I know that you really like the medical system and anatomy and stuff like that, so…” Kevin watched y/n accept the gift with gentle hands. Her dingers lightly brushed his, making Kevin flush slightly.
A smile tore into y/n’s face, making her eyes light up at the jewelry in the box. “It’s-“
“It’s a-“
Without getting another word out, Kevin was taken aback by the way y/n launched herself at him. Her hands wrapped around Kevin’s neck, her body laying practically on top of his. She smothered her laughter in Kevin’s neck. Kevin unconsciously wrapped his arms around her and leaned into her touch. He couldn’t help but smile. “You’re welcome,” he murmured, resting his chin on y/n’s shoulder.
When y/n finally pulled away, she smiled her smile: genuine and bright. “Thank you so much, Kevin. Will you put it on me?”
After placing the cranium pendant around y/n’s neck, y/n turned back around and struck a pose jokingly. “Whaddaya think?” She asked, watching the smile that pulled at Kevin’s lips.
“I love it. You- it looks gorgeous,” he murmurs, heart pounding at the little distance between the two.
“Thank you,” y/n said again.
Silence fell upon the two. As they sat, observing each other for what felt like an eternity or so, Kevin’s eyes flickered between y/n’s eyes and her face. “Y/n,” he started, words trailing off his tongue.
“Yeah?” The teen asked in a similarly breathless voice.
“Can… can I kiss you?” He asked cautiously.
“I want too, but… Should we?”
In his head, Kevin knew it wasn’t a smart idea to get attatched to another teenager sentanced to death; in his heart, Kevin wanted nothing more than to take y/n into his arms and overwhelm her with his affection.
“Do you want to?”
Y/n gnawed at her lip, goosebumps travelling up her arms and back and the gaze Kevin was pinning her down with. Yes, absolutely. Y/n wanted to be kissed by Kevin, but there’s always that looming cloud in the back of her mind. What if I die tomorrow? What if Kevin does tomorrow? What if I fall asleep and never wake up tonight? What if Kevin falls asleed and doesn’t wake up tonight? What if-
“Yes.” y/n planted her hands on Kevin’s cheeks and pulled him to her lips.

New V/H/S in October! We definitely *could* be looking at a fun one. The original 2023 press release promised "five new bloodcurdling tapes, placing horror at the forefront of a sci-fi-inspired hellscape," with producer Josh Goldbloom adding it was "only natural" to take the 7th film to space, following in the footsteps of horror giants like Friday the 13th & Hellraiser.
Jordan Downey (Thankskilling, The Head Hunter): Known for violent, irreverant genre films, Downey presents a segment called Stork, co-written by frequent collaborator Kevin Stewart
Christian & Justin Long (Lady of the Manor, Justin better known for his acting career): These brothers have only one horror comedy under their belt, though Justin is a veritable scream queen at this point, and their segment is called Fur Babies.
Justin Martinez (V/H/S, Southbound): This Radio Silence vet has a long career with the franchise, having co-directed 10/31/98 from the original V/H/S, in addition to doing VFX for the three latest entries. His segment, from a screenplay by Ben Turner, is titled Live and Let Dive.
Virat Pal (Recapture): Yet another one feature wonder (with a handful of shorts), Pal's segment Dream Girl, is co-written by Evan Dickson, the co-writer of V/H/S/85's Total Copy.
Kate Siegel: This scream queen is making her directorial debut with Stowaway, written by her husband and modern horror master Mike Flanagan.
Jay Cheel (Cursed Films, How to Build a Time Machine): Best known for his documentary work, Cheel's piece has been described only as a "special presentation."
I'm hopeful. I for one certainly thought "V/H/S goes to Hell" was gonna be a shark jump, but I really enjoyed V/H/S/99 (and especially loved To Hell and Back), so the concept of sci-fi doesn't scare me. I admit, I liked it more than most, but 85 wasn't exactly the strongest entry, so I'm hoping we can bounce back to full power. Sci-fi is certainly a great excuse to get some funky monsters involved, I do love me a good funky monster...

hohh! 💜 love you!!
favorite female character: theo crain the woman that you are <3
favorite male character: every time i watch hill house i go "damn hugh crain really is the most tragic character mike flanagan ever wrote" and i'm always correct
favorite episode: two storms is one of the best shot, directed, and acted episodes of tv ever written. absolute masterpiece
favorite cast member: kate seigel i am free on thursday if you are free on thursday when i am free
favorite ship: hugh and olivia...
a character I’d die defending: listen. look. i've been taking this question as a "character i think gets too much hate" type of thing and unfortunately i understand steven on a molecular level
a character I just can’t sympathize with: one of the many spectacular things about hill house is how multifaceted all the characters are, so this is a hard one. immediate easy answer is the foster dad in theo's episode, but he's fortunately barely in the show
a character I grew to love: kevin is absolutely the underrated mvp of the whole show. his wife and in-laws are all insane and he is nothing but supportive of all of them
my notp: i'd like to believe that no one ships any of the siblings but i know someone's gotta

glee :))
:D will do
my favorite female character: Tina Cohen Chang my beloved my everything they could never make me hate you. If she only has one supporter I am it.
my favorite male character: Mike Chang because besides one episode he is unproblematic. But hear me out hear me up Matt Rutherford. I am projecting yes.
my favorite book/season/etc: Season 3 hands down. Best music best plotlines and good blend of humor that's not too cringe.
my favorite episode (if its a tv show): Nationals is the epitome of Glee for me. I rewatch that episode at least once a year. I love it so much. I also really like Michael.
my favorite cast member: Jenna and Kevin because of the podcast. But I support Harry in all his endeavors and Amber is a queen.
my favorite ship: Tike 4 Life!!!! Should've lasted and I will die on this claim. (recently Tina and Finn tho)
a character I’d die defending: Finn Hudson lovable goofball Ricky Bowen energy. And he grows as a character.
a character I just can’t sympathize with: Lauren Zizes. Jacob Ben Israel. As much as I dislike Sue there are points where she doesn't bother me as much.
a character I grew to love: Rory Flanagan. He's just a little Irish boy and I love the scene where he tries peanut butter for the first time.
my anti otp: Where to start. I'm only going to say some uncommon ish ones. Jesse and Rachel, Rachel and Brody, Santana and Finn, Blaine and Dave, and Ryder and Unique. The rest I dislike are either common or just plain wrong so I feel no need to list them.

Reading on an Adventure's 2024 Reads
Tumblr media
2024 was a big year for reading for me. I surpassed my reading goal of 50 books, having read 58.
The books I read this year were a mix of series and stand alones, physical copies and audiobooks, fiction and non-fiction. Some books I enjoyed more than others. There were a couple that I DNFed, which I've noted in the list below, so the actual number I read was probably more like 56, which still allowed me to exceed my reading goal.
Some of the books I read this year I can definitely see returning to in the future. Others, maybe not so much.
