Talkin' 'Bout My Generation: New Line's Fresh, Funny 'Be More Chill' Has Real Heart
Talkin’ ‘Bout My Generation: New Line’s Fresh, Funny ‘Be More Chill’ Has Real Heart
By Lynn Venhaus Managing Editor
Every generation has a musical that captures the zeitgeist of the moment, that speaks to them in a special way. My generation of Baby Boomers had “Hair,” Gen X had “Rent,” Millennials had “Spring Awakening” and now Generation Z has the current cultural sensation “Be More Chill.” It’s fierce, fun and frisky.
This is not just another teen misfit story, although…

University of Hawai’i - West Oahu Spring 2018 Commencement Ceremony
Saturday, May 5, 2018: Just when we all thought we would get rained out today, mother nature cooperated this morning to shed some sunshine on the graduating class of Spring 2018. I was blessed with the opportunity to take pictures of the commencement ceremony on behalf of the Academy of Creative Media. (Thank you @shanaoka!) Being able to witness my fellow ACM classmates receive their diplomas today was very inspiring, and it makes the light at the end of the tunnel shine just a little brighter for me. I’m very enthusiastic for my remaining two (or three) semesters at West Oahu knowing that my turn is just around the corner.

Scottie Thompson flirts with triple-double as Ginebra snaps out of slump at expense of Kia
BARANGAY Ginebra made sure to protect a huge lead this time as it vented its ire on Kia, 103-77, to regain its winning ways in the PBA Philippine Cup on Wednesday night at the Mall of Asia Arena.
Coming off an 81-78 loss to NLEX in a game where they gave up a 14-point third-quarter lead, the Gin Kings built another early cushion that ballooned in the second quarter, then held on to it until the final buzzer.
Greg Slaughter dominated the paint, while Scottie Thompson flirted with a triple-double as the Gin Kings improved to a 4-4 win-loss record and handed the Picanto their seventh loss in eight games.
“It has been a struggle for us, but hopefully this is the game that turns us around,” Gin Kings coach Tim Cone said.
“We’re getting a little healthier. We’re getting on the same page and starting to adjust on the new way the game is being played and called,” he added.

Road Warriors scrape past Picanto
Photo by Tristan Tamayo/INQUIRER.net NLEX needed a four-point play by Larry Fonacier down the stretch to survive the unconventional ways of Kia, 119-115, Wednesday in the 2018 PBA Philippine Cup at Filoil Flying V Centre in San Juan. The veteran sharpshooter got hit and still converted on a right wing trey before completing the bonus off a foul from Philip Paniamogan with 1:06 remaining to give the Road Warriors a 117-113 lead. JayR Reyes and Paniamogan tried to bring the Picanto back in the game, but they muffed their triples in the last 15.5 seconds left. JR Quiñahan then, iced the game from the charity stripe. “It was exactly what we expected, a hard earned win for us,” said NLEX head coach Yeng Guiao. Fonacier shot 3-of-5 from beyond the arc to wind up with 12 points and four rebounds, while Quiñahan and Rabeh Al-Hussaini combined for 24 markers and 15 boards in the win. “We’ll take this win no matter how hard it was,” said Guiao, as NLEX had to fight from behind and even stared at a 13-point lead at numerous points in the second quarter. “What we’re trying to do here is build momentum and confidence and chemistry in the team.” NLEX discard Eric Camson sizzled in the game against his former squad as he went for a team-best 24 points on a 9-of-19 shooting on top of nine rebounds for Kia. New recruit Rashawn McCarthy contributed 14 markers, six boards, and five assists, while Jackson Corpuz got 13 points and nine rebounds in the defeat. 'La Cage Aux Folles' Embraces Freedom -- and Sparkle
‘La Cage Aux Folles’ Embraces Freedom — and Sparkle
By Lynn Venhaus Managing Editor There is a sparkle that emanates, not just because of the outward snazzy sequined outfits and shimmery set in New Line Theatre’s “La Cage Aux Folles,” but also inward from the all-male drag chorus, Les Cagelles. Their unbridled enthusiasm for a show celebrating “Be Yourself” is obvious, and underneath their wigs and cosmetic enhancements, it’s endearing.

Tesseract's 'Spinning Jenny' Explores Dark Themes
Tesseract’s ‘Spinning Jenny’ Explores Dark Themes
By Jeff Ritter Contributing Writer If someone says “carnival,” do you automatically think “creepy?” Carnivals always seem to have an inherent air of mystery and danger about them. The creepy factor comes from the carnival folk, who present their attractions as simple diversions and fun games. What if all of that was just smoke and mirrors – easy illusions to distract random onlookers from the…

Stray Dog's Fresh Interpretation of 'Jesus Christ Superstar' Has Real Heat
Stray Dog’s Fresh Interpretation of ‘Jesus Christ Superstar’ Has Real Heat
By Lynn Venhaus Managing Editor After seeing “Jesus Christ Superstar” at the Muny last summer and the NBC live concert performance Easter Sunday, I wondered if Stray Dog could bring anything fresh to yet another interpretation. This one works in surprising ways.
This vibrant cast embraced director Justin Been’s vision and quickly hushed any doubters. He wanted to examine how history and humanity…

Jones, Leveling Lead "Jesus Christ Superstar" at Stray Dog Theatre
Jones, Leveling Lead “Jesus Christ Superstar” at Stray Dog Theatre
By Jeff Ritter Contributing Writer Stray Dog Theatre’s venue certainly feels right for the somewhat controversial rock opera “Jesus Christ Superstar.” In 1970, lyricist Tim Rice and composer Andrew Lloyd Webber took a non-traditional approach with their concept album, portraying the Jews as Roman sympathizers, and Judas as a sympathetic character who tragically overstepped in trying to show Jesus…

Fiery Kiefer Ravena debut, Larry Fonacier dagger help NLEX survive scare from Kia
NLEX turned to two former Ateneo stars as it avoided the upset axe from Kia with a 119-115 squeaker to kickstart its PBA Philippine Cup campaign on Wednesday night at the Filoil Flying V Centre.
Kiefer Ravena was as good as advertised as he registered 18 points, 12 boards, and came three assists shy of a triple-double, while Larry Fonacier knocked down the dagger triple and completed a rare four-point play that enabled the Road Warriors to survive a scare from the rejigged Picanto.
“It was exactly what we expected: a hard-fought game,” NLEX coach Yeng Guiao said. “We’ll take this win, no matter how hard it was. We’re trying to build chemistry.”
“This is a lot better Kia team than before,” he added. “They’ve improved a lot.”
The Picanto, fielding a more grizzled lineup after finishing dead-last the previous season, flashed their offensive potential by scoring 40 first-quarter points, leading by as many as 13 points in the second period, and standing toe-to-toe with the Road Warriors in the endgame.
The Road Warriors only heaved a sigh of relief when Fonacier buried a right-wing triple off a JR Quinahan feed, drew a foul, and hit the bonus charity to complete the four-point play and put them up, 117-113 with a little over a minute left in the game.
Kevin Alas took turns with Ravena in orchestrating the NLEX offense, finishing with 14 points, five boards, and two assists, while Michael Miranda provided quality minutes off the bench with 14 points and two rebounds in 25 minutes.
It was a total team effort that saw eight Road Warriors score in double-figures, probably the most in franchise history.
Eric Camson led the Picanto with 24 points, including 15 in the first quarter, but it was Jay-R Reyes who kept them in the game down the stretch, scoring eight of his 12 points in the final frame that just went for naught.
The scores:
NLEX 119 – Ravena 18, Miranda 14, Alas 14, Mallari 13, Fonacier 12, Al-Hussaini 12, Quiñahan 12, Tiongson 11, Baguio 5, Soyud 4, Ighalo 4, Taulava 0
KIA 115 – Camson 24, McCarthy 14, Corpuz 13, Reyes 12, Galanza 12, Celda 9, Ababou 9, Khobuntin 8, Paniamogan 7, Tubid 4, Yee 3, Caperal 0
Quarterscores: 36-40, 64-68, 90-92, 119-115
