Columbian breaks out of slump, ekes out win over Meralco
Columbian snapped its three-game skid at the expense of Meralco, 86-85, in the resumption of the 2019 PBA Philippine Cup hostilities Wednesday night at Araneta Coliseum. The Dyip bucked a lethargic start and crawled their way back into the game during the second period all thanks to a brilliant performance by Rashawn McCarthy. The Bolts had a chance to pull the rug from under Columbian after Chris Newsome hit a triple with 38 ticks left to bring Meralco within one. Baser Amer and Cliff Hodge squandered the opportunity to put Meralco ahead missing two looks in the final 13 seconds of the game. “I told the guys to forget what happened in the past six games but don’t forget about why we lose,” Columbian coach Johnedel Cardel, whose squad improved to 3-4, said in the post-game presser. “We’re lucky we started the second quarter good,” he added. “The first quarter we felt like we didn’t know how to shoot the ball.” Skipper McCarthy posted a new career-best scoring performance with 30 points, eight rebounds, and three assists. The craft guard was held scoreless in the opening salvo and then posted 10 points in each succeeding quarter. Glenn Khobuntin and Eric Camson pumped in 14 and 10 markers respectively. Meralco drew 17 points from Newsome as Cliff Hodge and Ranidel de Ocampo chimed in 14 each. Amer contributed 10 more in the effort. “It’s a good start for us. After the long break, [we are] much better because we had two wins,” Cardel said. “[T]he break has given us an opportunity to give the boys a time off from basketball.” And it paid dividends as the Dyip now see the this new stretch as “a brand It’s a brand new conference,” he added. Colubmian takes on a struggling Blackwater side this Friday at MOA Arena. Meralco, on the other hand, will try to arrest their losing streak when they face Magnolia in Cagayan de Oro City this Mar. 2. ROS escapes in OT vs. Ginebra
#PHnews: ROS escapes in OT vs. Ginebra
MANILA – Beau Belga and Jewel Ponferada came alive in crunch time for the Rain Or Shine Elasto Painters as the team nipped Barangay Ginebra in overtime, 85-82, in their Philippine Basketball Association battle at the Angeles University Foundation Sports and Cultural Center in Pampanga on Tuesday night.
With the game tied, 78-all, midway through the overtime period, Belga took over for the Elasto Painters, scoring five straight points to put them ahead, 83-78.
Stanley Pringle tried to save the Barangay after scoring on a quick layup to cut the lead down to three and even had a chance to tie the game anew, only that he missed a three-pointer in their next offensive.
The missed triple paved the way for Ponferada's own heroics as he retrieved the loose ball after Rey Nambatac fumbled it and put up a teardrop that went in for the dagger with only six seconds remaining.
Jeff Chan scored on a buzzer-beating layup for the final scoreline.
Belga finished with 20 points, 10 rebounds, four assists, one block, and two steals for ROS, which got back to the win column, its fourth in the season, after losing for the first time in the hands of Alaska.
Mark Borboran added 16 points, five rebounds, and one steal.
Scottie Thompson's season-high 21 points, 10 rebounds, five assists, two steals, and two blocks went down the drain as Ginebra fell for the second straight game despite a franchise record-tying 4-0 start.
Pringle put up 20 markers, seven boards, and six dimes.
In the first game, Alaska Aces needed a strong finish on both ends of the floor to take out Terrafirma Dyip, 99-96.
Down 95-96, the Aces scored the game's last four points while holding the Dyip scoreless for the last 2:37 of the game.
Eric Camson, however, had a chance to force overtime in the last play, although his three-pointer rimmed out as time expired.
Vic Manuel continues to be Alaska's main man off the bench, leading the team to its fourth win of the season with 18 points, seven rebounds, and two assists.
Robbie Herndon added 12 points, four rebounds, and one assist off the bench.
CJ Perez's 25-point performance and Juami Tiongson's 21-point outburst were not enough as Terrafirma remains winless after five matches. (PNA)

New Post has been published on http://pba-live.com/ang-pinakamahusay-na-magsimula-ng-phoenix-sa-kasaysayan-ng-franchise-pagkatapos-mag-romp-sa-columbian/
Phoenix Pulse 108 – Wright 22, Abueva 16, Perkins 14, Intal 13, Revilla 12, Kramer 8, Marcelo 7, Jazul 6, Chua 4, Napoles 2, Mendoza 2, Dennison 2, Mallari 0.

PBA referees calling less fouls and allowing more physicality - and fans are lovin' it NO harm, no foul seems to be back in the PBA – and the fans are loving it. The physicality has noticeably gone up a notch this season, although sometimes it got out of hand and resulted in flagrant fouls, fights, and suspensions. League officer in charge Willie Marcial admitted there is a deliberate effort to allow players more freedom when it comes to physicality – as long as they don't cause harm on purpose. Marcial bared they will broach the idea about making changes to the rules and giving players more leeway in terms of physicality in a future board meeting. Even before the changes become official, Marcial has already done away with the constant reviews on possible flagrant fouls and touch fouls that noticeably slowed down the pace of play in the two years under former commissioner Chito Narvasa. The reaction have been mostly positive from fans, who are happy to see players fight for loose balls and rebounds with more ferocity and without having to worry about constant penalties. As long as the changes make the fans happy, Marcial is willing to give it a try. Payag naman sila," he added. Cto.

5 UAAP basketball players we'll miss the most
MANILA, Philippines - With the UAAP Season 75 basketball season over, various teams bid farewell to their seniors, some of whom have been key players and leaders.
Below is Rappler's top 5 picks of the players we'll miss the most, and the ones we find hardest to say goodbye to.
1. Greg Slaughter, Ateneo de Manila University Season 75 stats 14.2 points, 9.6 rebounds, 1.9 assists, 0.1 steals, 2.9 blocks 51.6% FG shooting, 72.5% FT shooting
How could you replace a behemoth that has anchored your frontline the past two years? Slaughter is probably the most polished seven-footer who ever set foot on college basketball and seeing him bid the UAAP goodbye will give Ateneo’s new coach -- whoever he is -- headaches on how to equal the production of the two-time Mythical Team member brought day in, day out.
That might actually be a good thing for the rest of the league, as they have one big --- literally and figuratively --- problem gone.
2. Nico Salva, Ateneo de Manila University
Season 75 stats 13.5 points, 5.2 rebounds, 1.6 assists, 0.2 steals, 0.4 blocks 48.6% FG shooting, 88,9% FT shooting
After romping through five championships in five seasons in the UAAP, Salva and his slick, almost-perfect midrange jumper will be gone from the collegiate ranks.
From making it to the All-Rookie team in his first season to bagging the Sixth Man of the Year award in his sophomore stint to getting back-to-back Finals MVP plums in his last two years, Salva has been a consistent contributor to Ateneo’s five-peat. We might not see a five-time winner like him again in a while.
3. Eric Camson, Adamson University Season 75 stats 14.5 points, 9.1 rebounds, 1.9 assists, 0.7 steals, 0.6 blocks 40.4% 3FG shooting, 61.0% FT shooting
Camson used Season 75 to showcase the skills he’s been flaunting to a limited extent as a reserve in his first three years in the UAAP. And after a rough start, the jump-shooting forward unleashed his offensive assault, scoring on jumpers, three-pointers, layups and putbacks as Adamson struggled to cope with the loss of star wingman Alex Nuyles.
Unfortunately for fans of the Falcons, Camson will not be back next year to provide firepower for the San Marcelino-based crew.
4. Jeric Fortuna, University of Santo Tomas Season 75 stats 8.4 points, 5.1 rebounds, 5.5 assists, 1.1 steals 35.4% FG shooting, 78.3% FT shooting
Fortuna’s evolution into a big-game point guard did not come easily for UST. But when it happened, he made sure that he will bring the Tigers on the cusp of greatness.
Fortuna masterfully orchestrated UST’s talented roster into a harmonious squad that took the league by storm before falling short in the finals. The five-foot-seven playmaker will be sorely missed by the Tigers, whose huge heart stood out in the finals against the Blue Eagles. Head coach Pido Jarencio acknowledged Fortuna for giving it his all until the very end, leading the team like a true captain with his never-say-die attitude.
5. Emmanuel Mbe, National University Season 75 stats 13.6 points, 11.5 rebounds, 0.2 assists, 0.4 steals, 0.9 blocks 56.9% FG shooting, 66.1% FT shooting
From MVP contender to the MVP’s sidekick, Mbe played his role in a workmanlike manner --- no fuss but efficient. Sources within the university say that the Cameroonian will forgo his final year of eligibility to move up to a professional league that will see him go to different countries to play.
And even if NU will welcome another talented African in Alfred Aroga, they will miss what the charismatic Mbe has brought to the team: toughness, grit and hardwork.
Honorable mentions: Mike Silungan, Mark Lopez, Gene Belleza, Jovet Mendoza, Justin Chua - Rappler.com, all photos by Joshua Albelda

PBA D-League Finals: When David fell to Goliath
NOTE: This article was written for GMA News. Unfortunately, it didn't get published but I think you should all get to read the compelling storylines of the PBA D-League Finals between Freego and NLEX.
*****
It was David against Goliath; only this time, the giant won.
“Lord, give us another Thursday” – the Freego Jeans Makers’ prayer echoed in the dugout before game two of the PBA D-League Aspirants Cup Finals.
An injured Alex Nuyles shares a joke with his teammates before the game, one of their moments of laughter during the finals series.
But despite all the prayers, despite the loud beats from the drums of the Adamson faithful, despite the heroics of Eric Camson, Lester Alvarez and Alex Nuyles, Freego failed to bring the series to a deciding game three.
“Patayan na kung patayan”
Common sense tells you that the superior team would eventually win the series. But when Freego stepped on the floor during Game Two of the best-of-three finals, you just know that they would not go down without a fight.
“Patayan na kung patayan,” said court commander Lester Alvarez.
Eric Camson echoed that they would do everything to force a rubber match.
“Sobrang gusto naming mag-game three.
Camson, who usually has double-double outings, was held to only eight points and six rebounds in game one.
True enough, the Batangas native exploded with 13 points in the first quarter alone. He also fired back-to-back three-pointers in the third quarter when the Road Warriors were already pulling away.
High-flying Chris Ellis blocked Eric Camson's attempt, successfully stopping Freego's main man.
Unfortunately, the powerhouse that is NLEX broke out of their rut in the third quarter. Chris Ellis and RR Garcia were hot from the arc. Even power forward Calvin Abueva showed that he can shoot from the outside.
“In it to win it”
NLEX has forged a rivalry with the Cebuana Lhuillier Gems, the team they beat in the finals last year. But even Coach Luigi Trillo admits that the MVP-backed team could not just be beaten even with a solid team.
“NLEX is in it to win it. If you look at their lineup, you can divide it into three different teams and they would all still be very good teams,” Trillo pointed out.
Who’s to disagree? The Road Warriors are composed of national team players, highly-touted Filipino-Americans, most valuable players from other leagues, and recruits from other champion teams.
While Freego only had a few drums and a handful of fans, NLEX practically filled 3/4 of the Arena.
On the other hand, Freego carries names you probably have not heard of outside the college leagues. Composed mostly of Adamson Falcons, Coach Leo Austria enlisted the help of JRU Heavy Bombers John Lopez and Jeckster Apinan. Bacon Austria and Oping Sumalinog, who both played for the Ateneo Blue Eagles, were also barely given minutes in the UAAP.
Prayers and bonuses
NLEX head coach Boyet Fernandez said he did not have to make a lot of adjustments from game one. “Bakit gagawin ang di naman sira?” were his exact words.
That confidence trickled down to each of his players. Abueva sported his infamous smirk every time he would make a basket. Once, he stuck his tongue out to the crowd after a pull-away dunk.
Even the usually-reserved Cliff Hodge also played with different aggressiveness, giving the players he blocked head-to-toes.
“Binugbog kami ng depensa ng NLEX eh. Dun mo makikita yung pagka-beterano nung ibang players nila,” said the older Austria.
The back-to-back champions go in the huddle one last time before the celebrations.
While NLEX was already gunning for a back-to-back, this was only the first time in years that the Freego-Adamson team made it to the finals.
From the start, the defending D-League champions were confident that they could sweep the series just like they did last year. While the Jeans Makers were saying their prayers, the Road Warriors were already talking bonuses and incentives.

Road Warriors scrape past Picanto
Photo by Tristan Tamayo/INQUIRER.net NLEX needed a four-point play by Larry Fonacier down the stretch to survive the unconventional ways of Kia, 119-115, Wednesday in the 2018 PBA Philippine Cup at Filoil Flying V Centre in San Juan. The veteran sharpshooter got hit and still converted on a right wing trey before completing the bonus off a foul from Philip Paniamogan with 1:06 remaining to give the Road Warriors a 117-113 lead. JayR Reyes and Paniamogan tried to bring the Picanto back in the game, but they muffed their triples in the last 15.5 seconds left. JR Quiñahan then, iced the game from the charity stripe. “It was exactly what we expected, a hard earned win for us,” said NLEX head coach Yeng Guiao. Kiefer Ravena, the second overall pick by NLEX, proved to be good as advertised as he flirted with a triple-double with 18 points, 12 assists, seven rebounds with two steals to boot in his PBA debut. Kevin Alas came off the bench and added 14 markers and five boards, Michael Miranda got 14 points and two rebounds, and Alex Mallari had 13 markers and three boards in a balanced attack for the Road Warriors. Fonacier shot 3-of-5 from beyond the arc to wind up with 12 points and four rebounds, while Quiñahan and Rabeh Al-Hussaini combined for 24 markers and 15 boards in the win. “We’ll take this win no matter how hard it was,” said Guiao, as NLEX had to fight from behind and even stared at a 13-point lead at numerous points in the second quarter. “What we’re trying to do here is build momentum and confidence and chemistry in the team.” NLEX discard Eric Camson sizzled in the game against his former squad as he went for a team-best 24 points on a 9-of-19 shooting on top of nine rebounds for Kia. New recruit Rashawn McCarthy contributed 14 markers, six boards, and five assists, while Jackson Corpuz got 13 points and nine rebounds in the defeat. The scores: NLEX 119 — Ravena 18, Miranda 14, Alas 14, Mallari 13, Fonacier 12, Al-Hussaini 12, Quiñahan 12, Tiongson 11, Baguio 5, Soyud 4, Ighalo 4, Taulava 0. KIA 115 — Camson 24, McCarthy 14, Corpuz 13, Reyes 12, Galanza 12, Celda 9, Ababou 9, Khobuntin 8, Paniamogan 7, Tubid 4, Yee 3, Caperal 0. Quarters: 36-40, 64-68, 90-92, 119-115. Stepheson shrugs off dust-up with NLEX: ‘It’s nothing personal’
Tristan Tamayo/INQUIRER.net Alex Stepheson heard how physical the game is in the PBA so when Meralco faced off against NLEX on Sunday, he was prepared for a bruising night. “It’s physical. I mean, I like it though,” he said. And the burly Stepheson got what he wanted. He inadvertently elbowed Bradwyn Guinto on a rebound play in the second quarter, leaving the youthful big man with a black eye. He was also on the receiving end of a hit after Eric Camson slapped him in the face on a scramble for a loose ball in the fourth quarter. Things got really heated that after the game, Guinto’s girlfriend even confronted the import and told him, “Next time, you play fair.” But the 29-year-old brushed the exchange, saying, “It’s nothing personal.” “I got hit with a slap to the face, I don’t take it personal. I was upset at the moment but that’s basketball it happens. I get hit, sometimes I hit people. I dish it out so I can take it, it’s just physical ball. I like it,” he said. Aside from the heated brushes, Stepheson had a solid outing, posting 18 points, 24 rebounds, and three blocks to help Meralco score a 91-84 win over NLEX and stay unbeaten after two outings. “Coach just kept on telling me to keep on being aggressive. In the third quarter, the second unit came in and got us the lead and then coach kept saying in the fourth quarter to not be passive,” he said. Though admittedly still not in his tip-top shape, Stepheson believes that he’ll eventually get there in a week or two. “I feel like I’m getting there. I’m getting close,” he said. Though he keeps focus on his conditioning, Stepheson made it clear that what keeps him on the right track is him following the instructions coach Norman Black is giving him. “I’m just trying to do what coach asks of me: to play strong inside, score, rebound, and play strong defense,” he said as he hopes to make the same impact the Bolts previous imports have had before. “I know they had the Best Import two times. I’m not trying to be the Best Import, that’s not my goal. I just want to play the best I can and win games.” Meralco returns to the court on Friday against TNT.

Injuries to its bigs hurting Dyip's ability to contend
Columbian Dyip has been one of the biggest surprises in the on-going 2018 PBA Commissioner’s Cup, staying in step with the field with their even 3-3 slate.
But as impressive as their guards are, their usually active inside presence seem to have disappeared, putting bulk of the load on the shoulders of import Bailey John Fields.
Wondering why?
With little to no defenders in the paint on Wednesday, Columbian suffered a 101-126 decimation at the hands of Magnolia where the Hotshots shot 57-percent from the field and win the battle of the boards, 52-47.
Corpuz has been hobbled by a sprain that has been haunting him since last conference and would also force him to beg off from participating in the Slam Dunk Contest in the 2018 PBA All-Star Week.
Aside from him, JayR Reyes is also dealing with a knee injury, while Eric Camson is playing through back spasms as the Dyip are trying to make do with their depleted frontline.
Corpuz couldn’t stop himself from being frustrated, knowing that the team needs all hands on deck to test some of the league’s powerhouse teams.
“Frustrated talaga ako kasi hindi ako 100-percent,” he said.
Those won’t bode well with the Dyip’s chances, with them currently ranking ninth in the league in rebounding with only 49.8 boards per game, with Fields accounting for 15.3 of those.
