Prime Minister Mia Mottley and her Foreign Affairs minister Kerrie Symmonds are headed to France “in a few days” to meet with French President Emmanuel Macron. This was disclosed by Symmonds in the House of Assembly on Monday as the 2023- 2024 Estimates continued in that Chamber discussing the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade which he heads. The minister said President Macron has “urged” that he be allowed to form part of a cooperative agreement with Barbados so that there can be a summit allowing him to use his global reach as a G7 leader to help this country advance the Bridgetown Initiative. “By no stretch of the imagination could we have envisaged that this type of relationship would have been fostered for this country ten years ago,” Symmonds told the Monday morning session of the Estimate Debate now in its third week. The debate turned its focus to the foreign affairs and foreign trade ministry which has $65 608 446 allocated for its work during the upcoming financial year. The minister’s disclosure came as he explained to the Chamber how the Bridgetown Initiative was now grabbing the world’s attention including that of the French leader. Fans should not be surprised to hear Rihanna talking on an international platform about educational initiatives for Barbados, inviting persons to visit her homeland, or chatting up conglomerates on the benefits of investing in the island.
Devotees of this renowned figure can now expect to see the Bajan songstress in these roles because the Barbados government last week named the international chart topper and winner of eight Grammys, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary, with specific responsibility for promoting education, tourism and investment for the island.
“She has … demonstrated, beyond her success as a pop icon, significant creative acumen and shrewdness in business. It is therefore fitting that we engage and empower her to play a more definitive role as we work to transform Barbados,” Prime Minister Mia Mottley said of this world-famous Bajan.
“Rihanna has a deep love for this country and this is reflected in her philanthropy, especially in the areas of health and education. She also shows her patriotism in the way she gives back to this country and continues to treasure the island as her home,” Mottley said and added that Rihanna’s charitable contributions, locally and internationally are significant.
Shortly after the announcement Minister of Tourism, Kerry Symmonds, gleefully began forecasting benefits to this main industry to the island with Rihanna as its representative.
He said that the Barbadian superstar could use her millions of followers and heavy
social media presence to promote the Barbados.
“I couldn’t be more proud to take on such a prestigious title in my home country. Every Barbadian is going to have to play their role in this current effort, and I’m ready and excited to take on the responsibility. I look forward to working with Prime Minister Mottley and her team to reimagine Barbados,” Government Information Service quoted the superstar stating.
But Robyn ‘Rihanna’ Fenty, the holder of two Brit Awards, nine No. 1 hits in the United Kingdom, and 14 top singles on the US Billboard chart, is no stranger to business and promoting education on the worldwide stage.
She has made waves with her multi-million-dollar range of ‘Fenty’ beauty products and line of fashion wear.’
She has financed education scholarships among Caribbean territories and is on an international mission promoting education for young people.
“The lack of access to education for children around the world is a massive problem, but that does not mean we should throw up our hands in despair and surrender,” she wrote in the UK Guardian newspaper this week. “Instead, we need to take on as much of the challenge as we can manage to set an example and see the difference.
“This is what has driven me to prioritise global education in my philanthropy and advocacy work… Education is a life-long journey.”

[caption id=“attachment_907493” align=“alignnone” width=“540”] Yusuf Aka.

Bajan Newscap 12/17/2017
Good Morning #realdreamchasers. Here is your daily news cap for Sunday 17th December, 2017. There is a lot to read and digest so take your time. Remember you can read full articles via Barbados Today (BT), or by purchasing Sunday Sun Newspaper (SS).
ONLY ILLNESS WILL KEEP AGARD FROM POLLS – Outspoken Independent Member of Parliament Dr Maria Agard may be going to the polls as a candidate in the next general election. Agard, who represents Christ Church West, has kept her next political move close to her chest for more than a year, but her attorney, Lynette Eastmond, says Agard is close to a decision about her future. “Maria Agard is giving serious consideration to contesting the next general election,” Eastmond told the SUNDAY SUN. “The only issue which might prevent her from doing so is her health,” she added. Eastmond was unable to say whether Agard, a former Barbados Labour Party (BLP) candidate, would run as an Independent or join with one of the country’s two newest political parties, the United Progressive Party or Solutions Barbados. “She did not say,” Eastmond said in response to that query. The Sunday Sun was unsuccessful in reaching Agard for a comment. (SS)
RATE BLOW – The decision by a commercial bank to lower the interest rate on savings deposits to a paltry 0.01 per cent could eventually have a serious effect on the cost of living in Barbados. Bemoaning the move by Scotiabank to reduce its interest rate on deposit savings from early next year, former president of the Barbados Economic Society, Jeremy Stephen also believes it could have a long-lasting effect on Barbados’ credit union membership, which also saves heavily at commercial banks. “With the high level of taxation in Barbados, the cost of doing business will continue to grow. The cost of goods in this country will continue to rise, so people could expect to pay more for goods and services in the coming year simply due to this move by the banks,” Stephen told the SUNDAY SUN in a recent interview. “This is of a great concern to many who are considered savers, especially in an economy where liquidity continues to climb. If there is excess liquidity in the banking sector and profitability is low, you try to save where you can,” he added. Last week, Scotiabank informed its customers that come January 7, 2018, it would be reducing the interest rate on savings deposits to 0.01 per cent, but would be willing to meet with them to discuss their savings plans. (SS)
LOWEST MORTGAGE RATES IN YEARS – Barbadians are enjoying the lowest mortgage rates in the last ten years. And, president of the Barbados Banking Association, Donna Wellington, said contrary to popular belief, interest rates on those mortgages had not gone up across the board. Barbadians are also defaulting less on their payments for all loans, in spite of the country’s turbulent economic situation. “The latest available data for the Central Bank of Barbados shows non-performing or delinquent loans as a percentage of total loans at 8.8 per cent,” Wellington revealed in a recent interview. “This means that for every $100 borrowed from commercial banks, borrowers of $8.80 are not repaying their loans as agreed. This percentage is down from 10.6 per cent in 2015.” Wellington did say, however, that data for mortgages specifically was not available from the Central Bank. (SS)
BANKS ‘ARE NOT DODGING CHURCHES’ – President of the Barbados Bankers Association (BBA), Donna Wellington doesn’t believe the charge levelled that banks are “tight fisted”.The head of the country’s banking fraternity is in complete disagreement with church leader Bishop Dr Marlon Husbands of the Sanctuary Empowerment Centre, who last month lambasted the financial sector, accusing commercial banks of clinging to their money and not even being willing to lend to churches in Barbados. The bishop said there were certain banks which had determined they would not provide loans to churches, and some financial institutions which were shunning the church, details of which were carried in a recent Daily Nation newspaper article. Wellington, the managing director of CIBC First Caribbean International Bank in Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean, said the mandate of banks was clear. “We are in business to lend money, and we are not the only ones,” she stressed. The bank executive did note, however, that all banks determine a level of risk before lending out their cash. “All financial institutions also have to consider their risk appetites. Risk appetite is a function of several factors, be they macro-economic or considerations around the sources of repayment, financial position, or the portfolio of the institution and past lending experiences, be they positive or negative with a borrower type.” She noted that generally, risk appetites vary per institution or institution type. Commercial banks for example are highly regulated and aiming for delinquency metrics that are within international standards. Other financial institutions are not measured by the commercial banking industry standards, but banks have to be conservative because of the stringent regulatory nature and impact of loss on the society given the size of their portfolios.” The BBA boss said when a lending institution chooses not to lend it is not a light decision. “That is what we are in business to do, so it is likely because risk factors presented are not within their appetite, but that does not mean that financing is not available. The financial industry has several players, all with a niche market and a lending base, and in Barbados there are several alternative options to choose from as they are all represented,” she said. According to Wellington, there are also entities seeking funding that require other types of funding, including equity or venture capital given the type of entity and the nature of their funding. The BBA president also confirmed many banks and financial institutions are now offering unsecured loans, but believes that is business as usual. “The unsecured loan offering is not new. Loans are for a wide variety of purposes generally under the banner of personal expenses. These loans are offered by some banks, credit unions, as well as brick and mortar and digital finance companies.” She said the response to the offers depend on the appetite for higher cost of the borrowing, as these loans, given their unsecured nature, have generally higher interest rates. (SS)
UNHAPPY WITH APPOINTMENT - While Minister of Finance Chris Sinckler sees nothing sinister in appointing the permanent secretary of the Ministry of Labour and Social Security to the National Insurance Board, Opposition Member of Parliament Kerrie Symmonds sees it as an attempt to increase the level of Government influence and its representatives on the board. The St James Central MP levelled this criticism against the Government in the House of Assembly yesterday, shortly after Sinckler introduced the second reading of the National Insurance and Social Security (Amendment) (NO) Bill. Symmonds told Parliament that it was a matter with which the Opposition felt some discomfort. However, Sinckler said his Government was addressing an anomaly by placing the permanent secretary of the Ministry of Labour on the National Insurance Board. (SS)
STENCH TOO MUCH – The Barbados Water Authority (BWA) has kicked into high gear its efforts to resolve the issues with the south coast sewage leaks. But that fix can’t come soon enough for residents in Worthing and Hastings, Christ Church, who simply cannot deal with the stinking mess any longer. A SUNDAY SUN team visited the affected communities along Highway 7 Thursday to speak to those in the area. Residents and business owners who did not wish to be named, expressed their anger and frustration dealing with the effluent and its accompanying smell. One questioned how the Minister responsible for Water Resource Management Dr David Estwick was not required to step down after the ongoing sewage problem. “How can I be paying a man so much money in taxpayers’ money and this **** be happening? They would fire me if I’m working and come in five minutes late,” the angry resident said as he stood near the bubbling manhole outside Lanterns Mall in Hastings. “And we’re paying a man hundreds of thousands of dollars in a time like now?” he reasoned. One worker at a nearby shop told the SUNDAY SUN that the stench coming from the effluent was actually driving away customers. Meanwhile, a resident who wished to be identified as “Lil Giant” said the smell was affecting those who lived in the community. While the smell was tough to deal with, Lil Giant said that the location of the pedestrian crossing outside Lanterns Mall needed to be changed in light of the bubbling manholes. “You see the white lines where you cross? The zebra crossing needs to be put a different place for people to cross,” the resident said. “A lot of old people can’t cross the road here because this sewage here makes it a big problem. “People won’t cross at the zebra crossing because they’re avoiding the water,” Lil Giant added. Adam Davis, who frequents the area, said the smell and water created a problem while going home at night and the scent gave him a headache. (SS)
MELNYK’S WARNING – Prominent businessman Eugene Melnyk is convinced that the cliff at the Crane Beach in St Philip is not as secure as it may seem. So concerned was he, that Melnyk, who owns one of the two properties leading to the famous beach, told the SUNDAY SUN he hired a team of engineers from a reputable firm in Canada to carry out a geotechnical study of the cliff 20 years ago. According to him, the engineers found that the cliff was unsafe to build on. As a result he filed an injunction in the High Court to prevent the Crane Resort from constructing any more buildings on top of it. Melnyk, a Canadian who owns the Ottawa Senators ice hockey team, said as far as he was aware that injunction was still in place. SUNDAY SUN investigations revealed that the court action had prevented Government from carrying out much needed rehabilitation work at the beach, which in 2015 was named among the ten best beaches in the world. (SS)
UPDATE: POLICE PROBE DEATH OF 15-YEAR-OLD BOY – The 15-year-old boy who died at the Chefette Restaurant, Marhill Street, St Michael yesterday has been identified as Thyrike Jeremiah Worrell of Mottley Land, Bank Hall, St Michael. Worrell, who was a student of the Frederick Smith Secondary School, entered the establishment around 3:50 p.m. to use the washroom. He complained of feeling unwell and collapsed and subsequently died at the scene. Police are continuing their investigations into his death. (BT)
MISSING WOMAN FOUND – Thirty-one-year-old Tenisha Maynard has been traced and is safe. Maynard, of Mount Friendship, St Michael, was reported missing on Friday, December 15. The administration of the Royal Barbados Police Force thanks the public and the media for their assistance in this matter. (BT)
VENDOR ROBBED – Current reports reaching NATIONNEWS indicate that a group of five masked men pounced on a way side food vendor operating at Brittons Hill, St Michael and robbed him and his clients of money and cellphones tonight around 10:30. Reports are that a gun belonging to one of the clients was taken, while another man was struck with the butt of a gun. All five men were said to have escaped on foot and made their way through Valery − a village nearby. Police and ambulance personnel are said to be on the scene. (SS)
COURT OF APPEAL ORDERS RETRIAL FOR SOCA STAR MACHEL MONTANO – Prominent entertainers Machel Montano and Kernel Roberts were granted TT$50 000 bail each after the Court of Appeal Friday ordered a retrial in their case dating back to 2007. The Court of Appeal allowed the appeal by Soca star Montano and Roberts, the son of the late calypsonian, Lord Kitchener, against their convictions and sentence stemming from a fracas outside a nightclub in the capital in 2007. Both men had been convicted and fined in 2013 for assaulting a group of people outside the nightclub. In December 2012, Magistrate Maureen Baboolal-Gafoor found Montano guilty of assaulting Gerard Bowrin, Janelle Lee Chee, Brandis Browne and Russell Pollonais. Roberts was found guilty of assaulting Browne and Pollonais. Montano was ordered to pay compensation totalling TT$13 500 and fines totalling TT$13 700, while Roberts was ordered to pay compensation totalling TT$11 000 and fines totalling TT$13 000. When the matter came up for hearing on Friday, Roberts was present and not Montano whose lawyer said his client could not get a flight to return home on time. (SS)
DRUG PROBLEM – Barbadian sports have never had any issues with doping. Until now. It’s safe to say that the local sporting arena currently has itself a real drug problem after seeing a very disturbing spike in adverse analytical findings over the last ten years. Just this year alone the National Anti-Doping Commission has reported at least six anti-doping rule violations – a record number for Barbados in any 12-month span. This comes against the background that young sprinter Levi Cadogan faces a possible two-year ban after reportedly testing positive for the banned diuretic and masking agent furosemide. And his is only one of three new adverse analytical findings. In this SUNDAY SUN feature sports writer Justin Marville details some of the other high-profiled anti-doping incidents to mar the Bajan sporting landscape.
IVORN MCKNEE SPORT: WEIGHTLIFTING YEAR: 2010
VIOLATION: The 2008 Sports Personality of the Year, McKnee returned a positive test for the anabolic steroid stanozolol after receiving an out-of-competition test here at home. Both his A- and B-samples tested positive for stanozolol, the same substance that led to Canadian sprinter Ben Johnson being stripped of his 100 metres gold medal from the 1988 Seoul Olympic Games. OUTCOME: The then 29-year-old was hit with a four-year ban from the sport in July of 2010. A two-time Commonwealth senior champ, McKnee only served three years of that suspension, having returned in 2013 after several other international weightlifters also had their bans reduced. Since returning to the competitive stage, McKnee represented Barbados at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
BARRY FORDE SPORT: CYCLING YEAR: 2005, 2010
VIOLATION: Undoubtedly the greatest Bajan track sprinter of his generation, Forde actually tested positive for ephedrine in 2003 at the Pan Am Games but only received a warning after explaining it was due to a cold medicine. Forde then returned exceedingly high levels of testosterone in 2005 and then failed a urine test for recombinant erythropoietin (EPO) in 2010 upon his return to the sport. OUTCOME: Forde served a two-year suspension for his positive testosterone test in 2005 and then faced a lifetime ban from cycling after testing positive for EPO. He ultimately decided to quit the sport on his own terms, having officially retired from cycling in 2011 instead of serving that career-ending suspension.
MARTINAS DURRANT SPORT: BODYBUILDING YEAR: 2009
VIOLATION: Durrant tested positive for both the banned diuretic acetazolamide and an anabolic androgenic steroid, mesterolone metabolite in Grenada after capturing the light heavyweight and overall crown at the Central American and Caribbean Championships. OUTCOME: The onetime Barbados champ served a two-year ban, having waived his right for a B-sample. Cleared to return in 2011, Durrant finally came back to bodybuilding in 2017 following an eight-year hiatus from the sport.
RODERICK WATERMAN SPORT: BODYBUILDING YEAR: 2010
VIOLATION: Waterman’s urine sample from the Mr Bridgetown competition returned the banned anabolic steroids stanozolol, bolderone, clenbuterol and mesterolone metabolite. He also had high levels of testosterone, showing a estosterone/epitestosterone ratio of 18:6. OUTCOME: Waterman served a two-year ban as a first-time offender. He returned to the stage in 2016 to win Mr Bridgetown.
DARREN MATTHEWS SPORT: CYCLING YEAR: 2015
VIOLATION: The then 25-year-old endurance rider tested positive for the anabolic steroid clenbuterol and a banned stimulant methylphenidate while showing abnormally high levels of testosterone. Riding for Team Cocos, Matthews apparently returned an adverse analytical finding from an A-sample taken at the Tour of Guyana. He then returned another positive result when tested out-of-competition at home here in Barbados. OUTCOME: Matthews was officially served a four-year ban in 2016 as a first-time offender for failing those two separate drug tests after not requesting a B-sample. A former national road race champ and Pan Am Championships medallist, Matthews was one of the first local athletes to be suspended under the new World Anti-Doping Code that came into effect in 2015. He has since retired from the sport. (SS)
EQUESTRIANS ON A HIGH – The Barbados Equestrian Association (BEA) closed a successful year with prize-giving at Coconut Court Hotel last Tuesday. The equestrians celebrated those who had reaped rewards at this year’s National Super Leagues regionally and internationally. New Barbados Olympic Association (BOA) president Sandra Osborne, secretary general Erskine Simmons, operation manager Glyne Clarke, and Neil Murrell of the National Sports Council were among the dignataries in attendance. Outstanding performers were veteran Roberta Foster and her partner Chichic, who spent the first few months of 2017 training in Wellington, United States, and competing on the international scale. Foster remained on top as she led the FEI World Dressage Challenge and received most of the national dressage prizes, along with the leading individual high score in the Caribbean Equestrian Association (CEA) Regional Dressage Challenge. Sixteen-year-old Zoe Archer, received the Amanda Howell Trophy for being Most Outstanding Eventer. Zoe, along with president Monique Archer and Laura Smith, have been travelling throughout the United States for the past three months preparing for next year’s CAC Games. Eventing was recently reintroduced to Barbados and Zoe and coach Joss Grey of England are eager to get the sport off the ground at the national level. Zoe and her experienced Irish mare and loyal partner Millridge Z are the first of the three to qualify for the CAC Games. Paige Tryhane, aboard Feip, won the FEI World Jumping Challenge (WJC) Category C (1m -1.10m) with Zoe placing second. Tryhane also walked away with the Category B (1.10m – 1.20m) championship, riding Daisy, her piebald mare. Having won the National Super League 1 and 2, along with FEI C and B, Tryhane earned the award for being the Most Outstanding Adult competitor. Dylan Frost and Bree-Anne Hurdle, topped the CEA Regional. Frost captured top position in the 0.85m. aboard Haze in the jumping, and Hurdle took the second level dressage test riding Rumba. Sara Jones and Sir Glacken, who stepped up a class for the FEI WJC in Category A (1.20 – 1.30m), gained the highest level score for FEI WJC and the National Super League 3. They also collected the Amanda Howell Best Retrained Thoroughbred Jumper award for the fourth year. This could be the last time for Sara as she passes Sir Glacken to her 13-year-old daughter, Indy Jones. The younger Jones won the Open Little League 1m, and the Jean Ray Trophy for being Most Outstanding Junior Jumper, with Jodi Haloute, who was champion of the Little League .80 - .90m. aboard Stella Blue. Special recognition was also given to Monique Archer, Diana Clarke and Roberta Foster for keeping the sport growing and developing. (SS)
BRERETON KEEPS TITLE – Defending champions Brereton were made to fight tooth and nail before overcoming resilient Benfica to win by three wickets with a day to spare, and retain the Barbados Cricket Association Second Division title. Having secured a 30-run first innings lead on the opening day, Brereton dismissed their opponents in 40.4 overs for 107, and set 78 to win, surrendered seven second innings wickets before scraping past the target to capture the coveted championship for the third time overall. Both captain Adrian Jones and manager Amblith Beckles were full of praise for the allround team effort, and supremely confident that the side would come out on top. (SS)
TROTMAN WINS LINTON TONK – Hometown player Sydney “Sinbad” Trotman is the second winner of the annual George Linton Memorial 13-Card Tonk Competition. Trotman emerged champion by winning the decisive six in the final at the Goalkeeper’s Bar, Licorish Village, St Michael, against Anderson “Bandy” Steele, who won two games, and Wendy Alleyne, who ended in the love. Playing on separate tables, Steele, Alleyne and Trotman had earlier won their semi-final encounters. The other semi-finalists were Cameron Bowen, Joel “China” Griffith, Cyntomia Lynch, Oliver Bruce, Sherwin “Pilly” Gittens and Rodney Inniss. Former Minister of Sport Rudolph “Cappy” Greenidge, well known cricket commentator Frank Gill and former Barbados footballers Robert “Bolt” Lashley and Cecil “Goofy” White, former St Catherine’s scorer and president Norville Brathwaite, popular dominoes slammer Harvey Jones and Harry Blades were eliminated in the second round. The tournament was played in memory of Linton, the late Barbados cricketer and coach who was an avid card player. It was coordinated by White, Gill, Adrian “Lew” Bynoe and Blades, who worked with Linton at the National Sports Council. The tournament was sponsored by Linton Catering Services. (SS)
ICONS IN WAX – Three musical icons with more than 100 combined years as ambassadors of Barbados’ calypso and soca music are set to be honoured in a big way. Come next year, seven-time Road March king MacDonald The Mighty Grynner Blenman, ten-time Pic-O-De-Crop Monarch and Cultural Ambassador Stedson Red Plastic Bag Wiltshire, along with entertainer, comedian extraordinaire and educator, Mac Fingall, will be immortalised with their own wax figures. They will join the company of other seminal historical, cultural and political figures such as: Lil Rick, Che Guevara, Fidel Castro, Marcus Garvey, Obadele Thompson, Alison Hinds, Sam Lord, who have also been paid homage to by the Caribbean Wax Museum. The announcement was made on Thursday night during the official re-opening of the Caribbean Wax Museum, the first of its kind in the region and Latin America. It began two years ago in Maxwell, Christ Church, however, it has now been relocated to Norman Centre, The City. (SS)
FOREVER WE DO - The Nation’s 2017 Forever I Do competition culminated today in a spectacular wedding at Mayfield House, St George. The winning couple Christopher Millar and Shaquille Holder said “I do” in front of family and friends at the beautifully decorated venue. Though the rain threatened at times, it in no way put a damper on the mood and the amount of love felt in the venue. Following the ceremony Mr and Mrs Millar, told the SUNDAY SUN they were happy to be married. “It feels great to be here today. It’s been a couple tough months, but to have it climax this way is great. Everything is perfect, everyone looks great, everyone is happy, we are happy and most of all we are married,” Shaquille said. Christopher added, “It feels like just now a weight was lifted off our shoulders. It feels really good to know we came here, got married and get to spend the rest of our lives together.” The couple will be heading off to their honeymoon in Fort Lauderdale on Monday. (SS)

Some Barbadian consumers remain unimpressed by the news that a second social compact has been agreed on in an effort to keep costs down on scores of supermarket items. In spite of the announcement this week by Senior Minister for Coordinating the Productive Sectors Kerrie Symmonds that a new compact on 47 categories of items would be in place over the next six months, shoppers say the escalating prices are proof that the efforts are not having the desired effect. Most consumers who spoke to Barbados Today at Popular Discounts in Kendal Hill said they were still seeing an increase in prices wherever they shopped. A weekly shopper who only wanted to be identified as ‘Nita’, said the social compact had not really made any difference when it was introduced last year. “The prices are going higher and higher every week,” she said. “The same week they talked about reducing prices, I came to the supermarket and the prices were higher than before, so I don’t see any difference. In July 2022, Prime Minister Mia Mottley announced that due to worldwide inflation, a social compact agreement had been reached with retailers and wholesalers to ease the financial burden being placed on consumers. At that time, scores of goods under 47 categories saw a 12 to 15 per cent reduction in mark-ups. That compact ended on January 31. On Thursday, Minister Symmonds said with the new agreement distributors and manufacturers agreed to a 15 to 18 per cent mark-up on dry goods and up to 20 per cent on cold storage products contained in the basket of goods. But one shopper on Friday showed her receipt as evidence that prices were escalating everywhere. A Barbados delegation which recently returned from the UK and the African continent was not entirely funded by Government. That is according to Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Kerrie Symmonds, who today stoutly refuted criticisms that Government was spending unnecessary money by travelling with large delegations without seeing any real benefits. Symmonds was responding to comments made by vice-president of the Democratic Labour Party (DLP) Paul Gibson, who called on Prime Minister Mia Mottley to disclose how much money the overseas trips were costing taxpayers and to disclose how they were benefiting the country. But Symmonds, who was part of that delegation that journeyed to the UK, Egypt and Rwanda, said he was “saddened” by the state of politics on the island. He said not only was there not a large Barbadian delegation, but a large portion of the trip was funded by the Inter-American Development Bank and the UN Foundation for Climate Change. Furthermore, the Senior Minister said Barbados was set to benefit greatly based on a number of discussions that were held during the trip. Symmonds disclosed that he and Mottley alone attended the World Travel Market in the UK to introduce the new Minister of Tourism Ian Gooding-Edghill to stakeholders. “Barbados’ tourism, as you would have heard me say repeatedly, represents approximately 45 per cent of this country’s GDP prior to Covid. It is necessary for us to take stakeholders into our confidence, rebuild an understanding between ourselves and them so that they are perfectly clear that we are open for business and are on the same track in terms of interest and investment and expansion of the tourism product and therefore, building that bridge and creating a new relationship between ourselves and Minister Gooding-Edghill was vitally important. “We left there and went to Egypt. I must say that the Egyptian delegation obviously was larger than just the Prime Minister and myself, but it was also paid for by the Inter- American Development Bank and the UN Foundation for Climate Change in addition to some contribution from the Government of Barbados,” Symmonds said. Patrick King of Barbados
BARBADOS/POLITICS (Naked Departure) -- PATRICK KING -- Dear Barbadians, Mia Mottley and the BLP used Patrick King to assist them in winning the election and then refused to include him in the job selection process. Now, they ALL want to use his recent outburst, (which heard him calling a minister of government, to wit: Edmund Hinkson, a “f'cking ten-cents-p'ssy-licking-stinking wh're” (or some rasshole like that)) to distance themselves from him. They were waiting for that lil short-me-crutch pre and post-election slave to make a fatal move and he did!
But, if Mia is prepared to distance herself from Patrick King, then she should also distance herself from William Dugid who cussed Donville Inniss about his mother on the floor of Parliament; she should distance herself from Kerry Symmonds who cussed Freundel Stuart and called him a ratboxy, followed his wife, cut up her jeep seats, allegedly gave her a black eye (a woman beater) and was charged by the police for the offence! Not to forget the two being accused of fraud, Dale Marshall and George Payne -- how about distancing yourself from them!
From what is being said, Mia Mottley seems intent on using the voicenote circulating with Patrick King cursing Edmund HInkson and considering it the unpardonable sin to distance herself from him forever! Another reason why King should never have apologized. Who can cuss stinker than Mia Mottley and Kerry Symmonds (and all them in her cabinet for that matter)? Why is it that she is willing to forgive those frauds in her cabinet who don't even like her, but seems unwilling to forgive Patrick King?
Patrick King, you were used by Mia Mottley! She was elected six months now and you are still unemployed. Pat muhboy, she has nothing for you. You were used and now you are being dumped. Doubt me? Call the phone numbers and see if she (or any of them) answers.
Your journey is over Patrick. Go and find your own employment and stop fooling yourself that Mia cares or has something for you. Your videos from now onwards will be meaningless to Mia Mottley, Bajans and to all who look to you for entertainment!
The BLP is in government. Bajans know you go to church on Saturdays and you can cuss stink, stink, stink like Peter, the fisherman! You can't go back to the DLP because they almost don't exist. You ignored any third party and, therefore, they will never score you. You lost Patrick! I told you that a Lion King should never apologize to mice, but you like a fool took a shower and put on clothes and went before Facebook to do just that!! It's over. Take a bow Patrick. Guhlong bout yuh business!!
Lookie here. This Johnny is also circulating shit about you. They are laughing at you Patrick King. You're done!!
JOHNNY CROW
"Your buddy Patrick King got your number Edmund Hinckson. He now cusing you. After the yardfowl/weather cock Patrick done do all the dirty work with information both you and Sutherland fed him to get the crooked BLP elected, you guys seem to be ignoring the poor fellow. He even started preaching on BrasTacks, too confused to even think straight. Now the madman cusing like a pirate. Unbelievable. A bad example as a father of two young women. Bad role model. Now a danger to himself Patrick King has run out of options. Which political party can he now join that would not let him down!"
Tiny, cowardly, loser! You should never have apologized to those F'CKERS!! Come for me Patrick King! I'm waiting here for you, you silly, silly man! Sheri Veronica of Naked Departure

BARBADOS (Naked Departure) — OBSTRUCTED WATERCOURSE — Naked, this dangerous situation started, when a Foreign White land owner engaged the service of heavy equipment to prepare a site for building in Chapel Gap, Payne’s Bay, St. James.
To get to the site, an excavator was used to remove a part of the clearly define watercourse lower right and left edges and made a pathway across the watercourse.
Boulders from excavation were utilized to create a new lower left edge, but it was extended 4+Ft farther into the watercourse to the boundary line of my upper land lot, in the middle and along the watercourse. The new boulders edge was elevated 3+Ft at lowest to 5+Ft at highest from the watercourse floor, thereby creating an obstruction, to wit, a yard/garden-cum private botch road. The lower right edge was not replaced.
I live next to said watercourse from 1982, sensing the danger said obstruction can caused, I reported this encroachment to the Drainage Unit, an Official, Mr. Dawe visited the site on 20 January, 2003.
Mr. Dawe agreed obstruction pose a risk, was against the law and that Drainage Unit would take action to have the obstruction removed.
After a year of excuses such as, ” we don’t have a Truck, Tractor or Bobcat to remove the boulders” coming from Drainage Unit Officials, Mr. Yearwood, Mr. Dawe and Mr. Inniss, but no activity to remove the obstruction.
I was advised to speak to Mr. Philip Tudor of MTW, I informed Mr. Tudor on 23 January 2004 of the obstruction situation, he said it was illegal, made promises of a site visit to verify and take action to have the boulders removed, he repeated those promises in 4 follow-up conversations we had between 23 January and 18 October 2004, but he reneged on all.
My first appeal to the CTO of MTW, Mr. Frank Thornhill on 23 April 2004 overlapped the conversations to Mr. Tudor, I rehashed what I told Mr.Tudor to Mr. Thornhill, adding that the obstruction was rerouting flooding flow from the original course, to my home, eroding my back yard in the process.
CTO Thornhillagreed said obstruction was illegal, his made promises of taking action somewhat align, with that of Mr. Tudor, but Mr. Thornhill irresponsible actions exceeds that of Mr. Tudor, because he has the authority to carry out “The Prevention of Floods Act Cap 235”, to deal with said illegal obstruction.
Mr. Thornhill’s unjust inactions allowed the illegal obstruction to exist and developed to a dangerous situation, that rerouted flooding flow to my home and the environs of Clarke’s Road, St. James, causing damages to properties.
An opportunity to rectify the Flooding situation came when BWA pipe laying project was days away from reaching the watercourse, Mr. Blades of BWA listen to my concerns and said he will request instructions from CTO Thornhill.
I was told by Mr. Blades that CTO Thornhill rebuffed his suggestion, because of Mr. Blades limitation and contractor Arthur apparent shortcuts, the open pathway in the watercourse lower right edge become a road across the watercourse to join said road in the middle and along the watercourse.
I asked the then MP for St James Central Mr. Kerrie Symmonds to intervene, he arranged an on site meeting on the 25 April 2006, it was attended by BWA,officials Mr. Marville, Miller, Blades, Drayton, from Drainage Unit Mr.Yearwood and myself, no Official from MTW.
To the apparent dangerous situation, it was decided and agreed to by BWA and Drainage officials, to retract the pipes, remediate the watercourse by making it deeper, relay the pipes, and replace the watercourse lower left and right edges.
Charles Marville of BWA reneged on the promised agreement month after month, from April 2006 up to after the 2008 General Election, when he boldly told me, that Mr. Symmonds can say what he like, but he can’t come to BWA and do it, the flooding situation continued and worsened.
Obstructed Watercourse
Obstructed Watercourse
Obstructed Watercourse
Mr. Clarke the land owner at the back in preparation to build, used an excavator to remove the upper part of the watercourse left edge, the space is now driveway and garden, the watercourse upper right ridge was destroyed by the back and forth movements of said excavator and was not restored.
On 4 August 2015 in conversation with CTO Thornhill, after making another appeal, he revealed that he as CTO will not commit MTW to any remedial work in said watercourse. I indicated that he and other official of MTW have already recklessly committed egregious actions, pertaining to said watercourse.
Leading up to the 2013 General Election, MTW workmen, task and instructed, not to remedy the private botch road obstruction, but to maintained by paving.
Evidently to satisfy a preconceived idea, or intent of former DLP MP for St. James Central, Mr. George Hutson, who I saw test driving on the newly paved said road in and along the watercourse, that now allowed vehicles to proceed across a completely flatten watercourse, a dangerous situation that aimed flooding at the Clarke’s Road area, worsen.
From 23 April 2004, to December 2016, clearly reasonably shown. The CTO of MTW, Mr. Frank Thornhill, breach his duty and the authority he holds for the prevention of floods, such as this callously created obstruction.
CTO Thornhill showed an obvious bias against who he perceived as a Black, lower working-class Barbadian, by extension all the Black residents of Clarke’s Road, St James, must suffered the results of a created dangerous situation.
The apparent action of CTO Thornhill showed his approval of the callous infringements, first instance, a wealthy White Foreign woman, then a Mr. Clarke who recklessly added to the callous actions.
In an effort to garner help, this situation was put to DLP Minister Kellman, in a facebook chat
On 6 December 2016, he stated, “if you send the pictures, I will send them to the DOERS of MTW”, Minister Kellman offer, correlated to the paving of said botch road. MTW Technocrats should and must do their duties justly.
Sharon Deane of MTW, advised me on the 9 March, 2016, that she spoken to Mr. Thornhill and he assured her that he will take care of the matter. As yet, for us the Black, lower working-class households, who resides in Clarke’s Road, St James I hope it is not the kind of assurance CTO Thornhill given to me on 23 April 2004. Regards, Mr. Blackman

DLP ON A PATH TO RECOVERY: DURANT – The Democratic Labour Party (DLP), which was defeated in last year’s general election, is on a path to recovery. This declaration came from Pastor of Restoration Ministries, Dr David Durant, who said the party was focused on rebuilding organizational strength at the constituency level which was important for the political, social and economic wheels to succeed. As he delivered the sermon at the DLP’s 64th anniversary thanksgiving service, which was held at the party’s George Street, Belville, St Michael, auditorium, this morning, Durant told those in attendance that along with organizational strength at the constituency level, the party was also rebuilding political strength in every arm of its structure, to chart a revolutionary path to the 2023 general elections. He noted that the party has recognized the need for relevant, sound policy ideas that can be communicated in clear, coherent and consistent messages. “After 64 years, the DLP is rebuilding her reputation of being vibrant, friendly, energetic, caring for the poor and purpose-driven; she must be quite aware that this cannot be achieved without having a more sophisticated communications strategy, that is very necessary, in this advanced technological 21st century world,” he said. “This party going forward will adopt a new approach to politics and embrace a face-to-face year-round level of communicating with the electorate of Barbados. People on the ground networking and engaging the public in respectful, relevant, needs-based two-way conversations will create wonders in broadening the base of your support, especially when some of those conversations can produce positive results.” Durant also professed that the DLP will need to continue embracing the politically intelligent and skillful leaders who understand the vision of the organization and who embody what the party stands for. He said such a move would make a crucial difference in its success. Durant advised: “Nobody, no situation or anything can keep you down unless you choose not to rise again. In life there are defining moments that we dare not miss, making the choice between giving up and going on can be one of them for you. Certainly you cannot turn back the clock, but what you can patiently do, is to rewind it once again and keep on going.” Delivering remarks, President of the DLP Verla DePeiza said she was heartened by how much closer the DLP family has become in the past year. She reminded those present that members are free to speak up within the Party, and urged them to encourage others to attend party events, to share their experiences, knowledge, and vision, as the party nurtures its roots to ensure that the tree that grows was much stronger than the last. “I inspire you to speak up and speak out. There may very well be repercussions, but I have urged you privately, and now I urge you publicly, to have the courage of your convictions,” she said. During the service which was organized by Restoration Ministries, there was singing and dance presentations from the audience, and selected groups and individuals. (BT)
GAIA TO BE EXPANDED – Minister of Tourism Kerrie Symmonds says Government is seeking to expand Grantley Adams International Airport (GAIA) in a bid to accommodate more arrivals. “We are now in an advanced stage of doing an agreement that would allow us to see 75,000 square feet of new floor space being built out at GAIA and that is like building a new airport and annexing it on to the existing one. [This] gives us an opportunity to see our capacity to handle arrivals move from the record level 687,000 to one million arrivals as quickly as possible thereafter,” he said. The announcement was made during the Loyal Visitors Cocktail reception held at Blackwoods Screw Docks, Bridgetown over the weekend. Symmonds also announced that government is closing an agreement with Lufthansa Airlines which would see 1,000 Germans coming into Grantley Adams International Airport. “We are in the closing of a firm agreement with Lufthansa as they have started to load flights. We have not spent a dollar yet because our marketing commitments have not begun but we have 1,000 people coming out of Germany on Lufthansa with just the announcement. Three days weekly they will be bringing in traffic from Frankfurt,” he said. (BT)
RESIDENTS MUST BE INCLUDED IN DEVELOPMENT, SYMMONDS SAYS – A Government Minister is charging more must be done to redefine the island’s tourism product. Minister of Tourism Kerrie Symmonds in delivering his welcome remarks at the Loyal Visitors Cocktail reception held at Blackwoods Screw Docks, Bridgetown, said Barbados has a lot of prime real estate entities that are misused. “Barbados has a bunch of opportunities which have remained unpacked, unexplored and undeveloped from the time I was a little boy learning to swim. The reality is a lot of our beachfront property is old warehouses which are misused. The reality is some of our beachfront property are abandoned commercial buildings. Some of them are empty car parks,” he said. Symmonds said UNESCO heritage sites can also be retrofitted into signature tourism attractions. Thus, he said investment cannot only be limited to structural and financial development alone it must include the revitalization of Bridgetown for residents as well as guests. “We want you to help us deal with the need of having recreational facilities for our communities where we do not have appropriate recreational facilities but which must have them if we are to have a happy coexistence with the inhabitants of the City of Bridgetown and the surrounding communities of St Michael,” he said. The Minister of Tourism said a happy coexistence between the residents and investors is critical as Government does not want a situation similar to Latin America where the disconnect between investors and citizens led to antagonism. “We want to have the type of planning gains that allow for better housing in our communities, better recreational facilities, better drainage for those who are in low lying coastal areas, and more important than that, the investment in small business opportunities in communities which can be linked back to the hotels,” he said. (BT)
ONLINE VAT WORRY – Concerns are being raised about privacy and civil liberty issues in advance of value added tax (VAT) being applied to online shopping come Wednesday, May 1. Barbadian Alan Emtage, who conceived and implemented Archie, the world’s first Internet search engine, said as every online transaction will have to be scrutinised to see whether they are taxable, people’s privacy can be violated. “There are many things that people like to keep private that have nothing to do with doing ‘something wrong’, or at least certainly not illegal. Medical records, child or other support payments, court records, or even something as non earth-shattering as planning a surprise party are among the many such things that are routinely subject to all kinds of privacy concerns and requirements. These are things that you may not want your spouse or family, your employer or church group or government to know,” said Emtage. (DN)
AUTISM ASSOCIATION WANTS MORE SENSITIZATION IN WORKPLACES – The Autism Association of Barbados is lobbying for more sensitization in the workplace and the education system. President Frank Johnson said corporate Barbados does not have the prerequisites to accommodate autistic adults. He was speaking Saturday at the Au-Mazing Gift: A Journey to Autism Acceptance discussion at the Radisson Resort. The presentation which was conducted by Dr Alisha Griffith discussed increasing awareness about the disorder and also encouraging parents to create support groups and advocate for change. Johnson said more sensitization and awareness must be done on autism. He noted that the corporate sector “don’t know what to do” as it relates to adults with autism. “They should be sensitized that children like this do have abilities. It is the same across a broad spectrum of disabilities. There are people out there who are wheelchair bound and they are not considered to be productive but in fact, they can be productive. If you go to the Barbados Council of the Disabled, they employ disabled people of all sorts and they are able to take part in producing admin services and support to the BCD,” the president said. Johnson said as more children are diagnosed with autism, there needs to be a call for awareness and sensitization to their plight. He indicated that the association sought to create a lobby group which addressed the educational requirements for children who have difficulties. “Most people in the past have taken these children and let them stay at home for the rest of their lives and they are looked after by siblings or relatives and all of a sudden they are swept under the carpet. We are not for that, we are saying they do have abilities, they do `have the same needs as you and I and they should be treated as such,” he emphasized. “We are trying to reeducate people out here about their potential, their abilities and the fact they are not sociological write-offs, that they will have contributions to make to society, that they will be able to do jobs, they will be able to contribute to the tax base. They will be able to make their own way in life and eventually they will be able to look after themselves at various degrees.” The president also suggested further educational sensitization programmes for teaching staff and a re-look at the curriculum in schools to facilitate students with autism. He contended that the students did not need “massive amounts of investment in new equipment” but a new approach to teaching. “They do need sensitization of the staff to a different way of doing things with children who may need more patience so it is a question of using what you have in a different way,” Johnson stated. (BT)
STUDENTS LOBBY FOR FACELIFT – Last year, hundreds of fed-up St George Secondary students complained about the deplorable condition of the bathrooms. A year later, head girl Destany Arthur and public relations officer of the Students’ Council, Nikisha Carlton, are happy their lobbying led to a facelift, inclusive of freshly-painted walls, three new water tanks and improved bathroom facilities. “The conditions were not up to standard and I felt that if I had to use the bathrooms, I would rather hold it in until I was ready to go home. I knew if the students did not talk about it, this would go unaddressed. “So I pushed it on the Students’ Council and with the help of the teachers and the principal, it went forward,” Carlton said. They were able to get about 500 signatures before the matter went to principal Dennis Browne, who passed it on to the Ministry of Education. An ecstatic Arthur said the students of the Constant, St George school felt energised by the brighter surroundings and were seen taking pictures. “Honestly, the school is not the building; it’s the students. But when people came to the school they only focused on the negative and the school is not negative, it’s a really good school,”she said. Arthur encouraged fellow students to keep their surroundings clean. “Sometimes I clean the classroom to take [the] load off janitors because they get tired just like we do. We need to show the people outside that you love your school by not damaging it,” she added. Browne, who thanked the ministry for the intervention, said all the blame should not be placed on the students as this was the first time the bathrooms were improved since the school opened over 40 years ago. St George Secondary has a roll of more than 600 students. (BT)
POLICE RESPOND TO TICKET CRITICISM – The Royal Barbados Police Force has responded to criticism over the issuing of parking tickets at the Buju Long Walk to Freedom concert on Saturday night. Acting Station Sergeant Michael Blackman said: “Despite about three weeks of continuous public appeal there were a number of persons who continued to park indiscriminately on our walkway and pathways causing our pedestrians, especially our elderly and differently able, to walk in the road. This practice must stop and we will continue to enforce the law on their behalf". The acting public relations officer's comments came after a viral video on social media blasted the police for issuing a series of parking tickets on the Spring Garden Highway last night. However, in response, many of the comments were in favour of the police’s action and were critical of those who parked illegally. Blackman also said there were no major incidents reported and he lauded the good behaviour of the more than 17,000 patrons. The RBPF invited members of the public to take "this civilised behaviour" into the Crop Over season. (DN)
FORDE ATTENDS WREATH LAYING CEREMONY AT JAMES STREET METHODIST– It was a somber mood at the James Street Methodist Church, James Street, The City, this morning, as the church recognized the contribution of National Hero Sarah Ann Gill. Minister of People Empowerment and Elder Affairs Cynthia Forde joined the congregation for a remembrance and wreath laying ceremony, at Gill’s grave site, on the church’s compound. A historic perspective read by a member of the church, stated that as the Methodist community continue to celebrate 260 years in Barbados, the church is grateful to Gill for her contributions to Methodism and to Barbados. The perspective read that though persecuted, prosecuted, and faced with threats of death, Gill kept Methodism alive, educated the slaves and promoted religious and racial tolerance. In her own words, she was “a stranger to fear”. She successfully challenged the powerful, self serving defenders of slavery, extending religion and education to the enslaved and advancing the abolition process. The Gill Memorial Church was built at Eagle Hall in 1893, to honour her memory. It was replaced in the late 1980’s by the Ann Gill Memorial Church at Fairfield, Black Rock, St Michael. which was opened on August 26 1990. Her final resting place in the James Street Methodist Church is on property she provided to build the church. Speaking to members of the media following the service, Bishop The Reverend Derick Richards, said Gill exemplified what it means to be a true Methodist through demonstrating her relationship with Jesus and her contribution to national development. Bishop Richards said the only female National Hero was on the side of justice, the down trodden and the weary. “Sarah Ann Gill did all of that and today this wreath laying ceremony is an opportunity to celebrate her, but also to remind ourselves of who we are and how we need to be responding to the various challenges and social issues affecting Barbados. And so we are calling all Methodists and all Christians to do whatever they can to help make our society a better one,” he said. Members of the Church Choir and Barbados Boys’ Scouts also participated in the brief ceremony. (BT)
‘TOO MANY’ UNDER 50 YEARS DYING – Too many people under 50 years old are dying, a funeral director says. And he is cautioning young people to take better care of themselves. Funeral director and owner of Earl’s Funeral Home, Ian Griffith, said the increasing numbers of young people dying could be due to their lifestyles. “From my perspective, having been in the funeral business for over 35 years, it’s a fact that we have a lot of under-50 deaths in Barbados. We find that a lot more young people are succumbing to diseases such as diabetes and heart disease. It’s not just the older folks who are dying. It’s the younger ones going as well. Yes, we have some young ones dying from homicides but a lot of them are going from the chronic illnesses,” Griffith said. (DN)
BROADCASTER VERE WALCOTT HAS DIED – A familiar voice from the airwaves of the 1980s and 1990s has gone silent. Broadcaster Vere Walcott died today. Walcott, of Mangrove Park, St Philip worked at both the Caribbean Broadcasting Corporation and the Starcom Network and became particularly known for his business reports. He was also the very popular Charlie Bravo delivering early morning traffic reports from a helicopter. His son Sheldon Walcott remembered his father as someone who was always there for him and his sister Veria, hardworking and goal-driven. “He was always willing to help others,” Sheldon said. Manager of news with Starcom Stetson Babb remembered his former colleague as a journalist with great skills who worked across a number of areas from broadcasting, announcing to news reporting. “I worked with Vere at both CBC and Starcom Network and he was a veteran journalist of great skill. A great gentleman and a great person and in latter years he was deeply into his faith and religious principle,” he said. Former director of news and current affairs at CBC Michelle Arthur, who worked alongside Walcott as a reporter and on the morning traffic beat, recalled that he had a keen sense of business news and was well respected in the field. Along with the Bravo Charlie traffic report Walcott also developed a segment of news called “That Bugs Me, a satirical piece addressing issues or situations that many frowned upon but did not openly address. “He never had an unkind thing to say about anyone, always pointing out the best in people,” Arthur said.
