My friends call me insane for hating everything that Travis barker touches… but like none of it is good? (Plus I can’t ever picture him without that Kardashian attached to his face.) Alex my guy, blink twice if you’re being held captive.
The universe allowed him to survive a whole plane crash and all he’s done is give us bland, same sounding pop-punk from meh artists (apologies to Kenny Hoopla). I have to believe Alex is playing the game but when whatever cringey boring song comes out catch me asleep.

Tales From The Drop Box Episode 193 (2021-05) / Still The Pandemic Episodes, Damn..
Tales From The Drop Box Episode 193 (2021-05) / Still The Pandemic Episodes, Damn..
Well I bet you thought that this podcast had evaporated into the sands of time. It still might, but I’m going to give it a shot. As this is only Episode 5 of Tales From The Drop Box in 2021, and we’ve had several COVID vaccine options in the time I’ve been away, I’m hoping that as things now, after some clusterfuckery, are heading on a positive trajectory. Maybe it was the January 6th…

Album & EP Recommendations
Haven’t had chance to delve into much new music this week (blame Wolf Alice for still being on heavy repeat, you can scroll down to check out that Album of the Week review below) so a bit of a shorter round up compared to normal – here’s what’s worth checking out this week:
No Gods No Masters by Garbage
Legendary American rockers Garbage released their seventh studio album this week, which makes for a frantic thrill ride as they sonically jump between styles – from full throttle electro-rock one minute and then dazzling synth-pop the next. Charged with a fierce message of defiance against those who abuse their power, singer Shirley Hanson holds all aspects of “capitalist short-sightedness” to account across the record’s 11 tracks. It’s a pulsating and compelling listen, with the title track, Godhead and This City Will Kill You the early standouts.
Day By Day by White Flowers
Elsewhere, Preston-based duo White Flowers also released their dreamy debut album, Day by Day. It is a promising first outing for the pair, with the album oozing with mesmerising shoegaze, angelic vocals from Katie Drew and soundscapes that shift between the ambient and the ominous. In terms of highlights, the hypnotic, evening glaze of Night Drive and the sprawling swoon of the title track leave the biggest first impression.
SURVIVORS GUILT by KennyHoopla & Travis Barker
And finally on the Albums & EPs front, one of pop-punk’s brightest young stars in KennyHoopla teams up with one of the genre’s legends in Travis Barker for this vibrant and energetic new mixtape. At 20 minutes long it’s a short, sharp blast of fun, with soaring guitars, pounding drums and anthemic choruses, with tracks Estella, Hollywood Sucks and 9-5 (love me) providing the biggest moments.
Track of the Week
Dustland by The Killers featuring Bruce Springsteen
The Killers reimagine their stirring Day & Age cut A Dustland Fairytale, with this version carrying one pretty big difference – the Boss himself joins Brandon on vocal duties. One of my favourite Killers tracks anyway, the addition of Bruce and some glorious orchestration lifts this song further to soaring new heights.
Rollin Stone by Little Simz
In preparation for her forthcoming new album, Simz has already dropped two of the best tracks of the year so far with Introvert and Woman. Now, she has added a third to the list with her confident, swaggering new single Rollin Stone seeing Simz on top form as she spits memorable bars over some pulsing and spacey back beats.
Believe Anything by Holy Holy
Australia’s finest Holy Holy are readying their fourth album Hello, My Beautiful World for release in August, with this first taster showing yet another new direction for the indie rock outfit. Featuring a catchy chorus of “La, La, Las”, a big bassline, some wonderfully buzzy guitars and some gorgeous strings, it marks a very strong return.
LUMBERJACK by Tyler, The Creator
Also making their return is rap superstar Tyler, The Creator, who dropped this aggressive, and menacing new track this week. With an infectious groove and Tyler on razor-sharp form, it’s a surprising but welcome return.
Raise Your Glass by Yonaka
And finally, Brighton rockers Yonaka released the latest single from their forthcoming mixtape, marking arguably their most radio-friendly track to date. With a big soaring chorus and a noticeably more pop melody, expect to hear this anthem playing loud over the summer.
