Today’s Movie: The Rockford Files – The Queen of Peru Year of Release: 1977 Stars: James Garner. Noah Berry, Jr., Ken Swofford Director: Meta Rosenberg This movie is not on my list of essential films, largely because it’s not a movie at all.  It’s an episode from the fifth season of my favorite television show ever. EXPERIMENT IN TERRA - 45th ANNIVERSARY!
#onthisdatein1979
“That’s basically an episode of Quantum Leap. The Eastern Alliance was sort of introduced as a potential new threat, but they weren’t really much of one. It’s kind of fun, but again, here’s where they went right. Starting with “War of the Gods”, they more or less made you forget about the Cylons. Maybe we got rid of them.”
--Scott Mantz (Access Hollywood)
Original Air Date: 3/18/79
Writer: Glen A. Larson
Director: Rod Holcomb
Guest Cast: Edward Mulhare, Melody Anderson, Nehemiah Persoff, Ken Swofford.
Synopsis:
Apollo and Starbuck catch up with the escaping Eastern Alliance destroyer and follow it back to Terra. But, before they can make contact with the planet, Apollo is plucked out of space by the same super-race that helped them defeat Count Iblis. The alien’s representative, John, asks Apollo to help him prevent a war that will affect them all. Apollo is sent down to the planet, assumes the identity of a Terran astronaut, and must somehow stop the war that will wipe out both sides.
Comments:
Many fans really like the premise of this episode. I like that it’s a part of a little Galactica mid-season trilogy. The Terra Trilogy is made up of the episodes Greetings from Earth, Baltar’s Escape, and Experiment in Terra. Producers were attempting to find other antagonists besides the Cylons as much as they were finally putting “story arc’s” together. Remember, originally BSG was to be a series of made for TV movies. There was no weekly serial prep or story arc prepared originally.
It wasn’t until mid-season where you started to see the seeds of possible serialized story telling. I’ve said before I was on board with an “Eastern Alliance” story as a change up. Just not a fan of the space nazi thing so much. Here, for the most part, from a story perspective I think everything works. There is drama. There is comedy. There is action and the Galactica using lasers to shield an entire planet! All good stuff! Famously, Richard and Dirk swapped dialogue at the last minute for this episode and Apollo took Starbuck’s place as “Charlie Watts”.
“Richard went to Glen and was upset. He wanted more fun stuff to do. And, what Glen did was he took the script that he had already written and gave all of Starbuck’s dialogue to Richard and he gave all of Richard’s dialogue to Dirk.”
--Terrence McDonnell (Story Editor)
“I was very thankful for that. I had told Glen that I felt a little frustrated. I felt that my character had been painted into a box. I was tired of playing the straight guy, the perfect hero.”
--Richard Hatch
Again, I get it. But, for me the comedic timing of some of the scenes were off and Apollo just wasn’t acting like Apollo. However, that’s not my biggest problem with the episode. No, it’s definitely the production value here. From Nationalists soldiers wearing dirt bike helmets to awkward set design (clearly inside 1970s era buildings, complete with tile floor of the era), it just felt like Galactica “light”.
That said, the Ship of Lights, the Galactica racing to save the day at Light Speed and then blasting missiles out of the atmosphere, and again the plot/sub-plots all worked fine for me.

Thelma & Louise (1991)
Gossipy Fact: Geena Davis separated from second husband Jeff Goldblum the day after filming wrapped. Neither commented on the split, but gossip columnist Liz Smith reported Davis as having gone "bananas" for the young Brad Pitt.

Baywatch # 033
Shannon Tweed guest stars in this murder-fulled Hitchcockian hour.
One of the great things about Baywatch is the diversity of stories and genres. Here is a tale that contains strong elements from hard-boiled private eye fiction, as well as some of the storytelling tropes found in Hitchcockian movies. There’s also something supremely “90s TV” about the whole endeavour.
We open with a particularly nasty/cruel murder and follow the woman responsible as she packs both the body and a case of money in her car. However, someone is after her and - after an exciting car chase - she and the car are suddenly underwater, with Mitch coming to the rescue.
Tweed and David Hasselhoff have great chemistry it’s easy to believe that their characters would quickly/easily fall in love.
We, of course, know that the woman is a cold-blooded murderer. Mitch doesn’t. Even when she uses him as an integral part of a second murder. He still just accepts all her lies at face value. Which is sweet, and is an interesting and clever storytelling choice.
Eddie, however, has suspicions from day one. And it is ultimately him to puts the police onto Allison. Even when everything is explained to Mitch, he (stupidly) rushes off and into danger. Which says a lot about the character of Mitch.
All along the way, the script makes all the right choices and is very satisfying to watch.
There’s no b-story and very little time is spent away from Allison. She’s pretty much the main character in this episode. While Eddie, despite very little screentime, is the hero.

Thelma a Louise - Road movie od Ridleyho Scotta

After a toxic chemical spill, Beverly Hills is evacuated.  While its citizens wait in a hotel, their mansions and valuables are guarded by the police and agents of the EPA.  Or so they think.  It turns out that the chemical spill was faked and that both the police and the government agents are in on it.  While the town’s deserted, they’re going to rob everyone blind.  The scheme’s mastermind is…

Blood Rose
Tumblr media Tumblr media
According to John Fasano’s BLOOD ROSES (1988), 1980s parents were right. Heavy metal really was a tool of the devil. Or at least it is when the mythical band of the title arrives in Mill Basin (played by Hamilton, Ontario) for a series of concerts there that turn the local teens into demons acting out their most violent desires. Before long, nagging mothers, abusive stepfathers and the hot teacher’s girlfriend are being dispatched in various colorful ways. Lest that sound too appealing, I should point out that this Troma release is so loony, I suspect Bugs, Daffy and Elmer were among the concert crowd. Fasano had a larger than usual budget with which to work, so he actually has two name actors in the cast: Julie Adams, who’s pretty much wasted as the local Priscilla Goodbody, and Ken Swofford, who doesn’t just give a performance as the town mayor (clearly a graduate of the same school as the mayor of Amity Island) but actually gives a pretty fine one. The film has some genuinely loopy moments: the studly English teacher relaxing with a beer while listening to Mozart; a monster that must have cost all of $3.50 popping out of a stereo speaker to eat a strict Italian father (played by “Big Pussy” himself, Vincent Pastore), concert goers transformed into plastic skeletons (maybe they didn’t hate their parents enough). It also has some great music by Lizzy Borden and Kult Kobra, which dubbed Black Roses’ performances. “Let’s make blood sing!”
