Review: Tammy Faye, Almeida Theatre
Review: Tammy Faye, Almeida Theatre It looks good but... Also, do we think US theatre creatives are coming up with musicals on UK 80s TV stars? Bella Emberg the Musical anyone...
Immensely spectacular creative work and some corking performances can’t quite hide the hollowness at the heart of Tammy Faye at the Almeida Theatre “You opened your heart and people wanted to come in. It was like the opposite of church” I don’t know anything about the world of US TV evangelists. And I wonder how many Brits really do, aside from seeing the film The Eyes of Tammy Faye last year,…

Who would you like to see as replacments in the Broadway run of Hadestown? Or who you’d like to see in the touring or West End cast?
i honestly don’t know enough about broadway actors to say, but i would love if some of the understudies moved up to principals after the current ones leave! i especially love the persephone understudies so much. possibly norm lewis as hades at some point? i’d also really love ciara renee persephone some day but probably a bit into the future.
for west end cast, i’m still team maiya quansah-breed eurydice and jordan luke gage orpheus BUT since i and everyone else has said that a million times before, i’ll try and think of new ones. also i’ve been listening to etaj a lot lately so that might definitely come across
eurydice: courtney bowman, sharan phull, danielle fiamanya, hazel karooma-brooker
orpheus: john mccrea, rodney vubya, toby miles,
persephone: rachel john, danielle steers, zoe birkett, sejal keshwala
hades/hermes: i know maybe three actors over the age of 40 and none of them would fit so i truly have no idea sdfghsdfgh
fates: idk which fate is which but just some ideas: courtney stapleton, lucie shorthouse, martha kirby, renee lamb, laura baldwin, kelly agbowu, shekinah mcfarlane

Waitress – West End || 10-8-2019
So last week I went to Waitress, and it was a pretty eventful show! So here’s what happened plus some of my thoughts about the show itself.
I already knew the music really well, and had watched a bootleg of the original cast like 2 years ago, but can’t remember much of it.
Our cast was:
 Jenna ~ Lucie Jones
Becky ~ Charlotte Riby
Dawn ~ Ashley Roberts
Dr Pomatter ~ David Hunter
Ogie ~ Blake Harrison
Earl ~ Peter Hannah
Joe ~ Shaun Prendergast
Cal ~ Stephen Leask
Nurse Norma ~ Kelly Agbowu
-  At the end of the show Lucie held a speech and told us that it was Ashley and Shaun’s last show, which explains why they’re pictures and CV’s weren’t on the programme, but on separate sheets of paper. The whole speech was so sweet and you could tell the cast was just one big family.
- The lobby smelled like pies yesss
- I will forever stan the turn off your phone song
- I totally forgot how funny this show is, cause like it is marketed as a musical comedy, but some of the songs are so emotional I was like naah it’s not a comedy, but watching it I see I was wrong
- David Hunter (who I’ve seen before in Kinky Boots) has such great comedic timing, like in general Dr Pomatter is such a funny character I love him
- Ogie really looked like Josh Groban and it confused me lol
- LUCIE JONES IS SO AMAZING SHE IS SO IN CONTROL OF HER VOICE AND SHE’S JUST A JOY TO LISTEN TO AND HER RIFFS AND HER BELT AND HER HEAD VOICE I’M IN LOVE I KNOW I’M BIASED BECAUSE I’VE SEEN HER LIVE BUT SHE IS HONESTLY THE BEST JENNA I’VE HEARD
- So I’ve seen this mentioned before on Tumblr, but during Bad Idea they sing “It’s the only thing I’ve never/I’ve ever done” and I really wanna know what they mean by that. Has Dr Pomatter cheated more than once or is it talking about something else?
- In the break I had a pie, so I can now cross that off my bucket list. I also took the pot home because I am a hoarder of anything to do with musicals
- Charlotte (who played Becky) was an understudy and her rendition of I Didn’t Plan it was so good, like HER BELT. In general I think we need more understudy (and swing) appreciation in musical theatre because whenever I’ve seen an understudy they’re just so amazing and they work so hard
- There was a little reprise of (I think it was) What’s Inside, which isn’t on the cast album so I was shook
- During Bad Idea (reprise) Dr Pomatter’s coat fell off the door in time with the music (right before she said “The dark dark chocolate pie” and Lucie and David just broke and Lucie couldn’t say her line for like 20 seconds cause she was just laughing and the whole audience lost it and I was crying of laughter and in the next scene everyone (including Lucie) was still giggling
- Right before You Matter to Me someone made a weird sound (Maybe it was a burp or something idk) but me and my brother both lost it, and we were really trying to hold back our laughter cause it was an emotional moment, so I’m sorry to anyone around us who heard our held back snorts
- I find Earl a really interesting character, cause he’s deifinitely abusive, but it’s because of his own insecurities (which is what is mostly the case with abusers) and how much does he mean what he’s saying (about her being the only thing he ever loved) and how much is he just saying it to manipulate her? I think it really make Jenna’s emotional turmoil about leaving him even more poignant
- During She Used to be Mine I was SOBBING
- Right as the last scene between Dr Pomatter and Jenna started there was wolf whistling from the crowd and then loads of people started talking. Lucie and David then walked off stage and there was a doctor called up. Then they announced they were having technical difficulties and had to pause the show. After 10 minutes or so they announced someone had had a medical problem but could now resume the show. After the show there was an ambulance outside so I hope the person was ok
- Anyway back to the last bit of the show
- I’m amazed at how the actors went straight back into their performance with perfect concentration as if nothing had happened, they really know how to deal with this sort of thing
- I honestly wonder what Dr Pomatter does after Jenna leaves him, does he tell his wife about his affair or not? And if he does what is her reaction?
- At the end the whole cast was hugging and dancing and I love that so much
Anyway I advise everyone to go see this joyous (although sometimes heartbreaking) show, especially while Lucie Jones is still in it cause she is AMAZING. And if you don’t have the chance you should at least give the cast album a listen if you haven’t already!

Friends of Dorothy

THE WIZARD OF OZ
The REP, Birmingham, Thursday 29th November, 2018
Frank Baum’s classic tale comes to Birmingham in this vibrant new production from director Liam Steel. Updating the framing story of Dorothy and her aunt and uncle eking out a living on a farm to the 1950s, the early scenes of this production look like a John Steinbeck and sound like a Tennessee Williams – especially when Miss…

WAITRESS LONDON
I just saw Waitress live for the first time this afternoon, here are my thoughts on it!!! It was SO GOOD. I had seen bootlegs of it but I'll admit I've only watched two from start to finish and only seeing live I'm realizing just how much I had missed because it wasn't in the videos!!! So much of the choreography was new to me, it was insane!!! I also feel like I understood and experienced the story more fully when I saw it in one go the way it was written to be experienced. Some lines immediately struck me as call backs or foreshadowing, etc, that I hadn't necessarily thought of before. Great shit. Now onto cast. By order of how much I liked them. Katharine McPhee as Jenna: PHENOMENAL. ABSOLUTELY STUNNING AND BRILLIANT. Her Jenna is EXACTLY what I want in the character, she gives just exactly what I'm craving, it's insane. Completely perfect in all aspects, singing or acting. Flawless. I'm blown away. Marisha Wallace as Becky: INCREDIBLE! Just everything I love about the character with a fresh young take too, her voice is just heavenly and gave me literal tingles through my body! Perfect cast for this role, she's incredibly talented. Laura Baldwin as Dawn: the main reason I booked that ticket. I had seen her in Eugenius and she was just as lovable in this! I absolutely loved her acting and her singing, my only issue is that Dawn shares so many scenes with Ogie and I felt like they had zero chemistry. That was however 1000% not on her but only on him. More on him later. David Hunter as Dr Pomatter: pretty good! some scenes sold me way more than others but overall, a good Pomatter. GREAT chemistry with Katharine, my body has not yet recovered from Bad Idea (Reprise). He plays the role a bit more awkward/funny than anxious but it worked really well. I loved him a lot. Nice voice. Chris McGuigan as Cal: this was an understudy and it was his Cal debut! He did an amazing job. He was really good with Marisha, every scene was really funny. Kelly Agbowu as Nurse Norma: really funny! absolutely loved her. Peter Hannah as Earl: the last of the performers I liked lmao. His Earl was good, maybe less terrifying than some I've seen, more arrogant. Definitely a younger, more insecure vibe. I liked what he gave. now the tea Shaun Prendergast as Joe: although he was a darling at stagedoor, did not like his Joe at all. Not a fan of his voice, whether singing or acting, not a fan of his acting choices. Didn't like him. I felt almost nothing at Take It From An Old Man and god knows that song just on the cast album can make me cry. Jack McBrayer as Ogie: ABSOLUTELY HATED EVERY SECOND THIS DUDE WAS ON STAGE. CANNOT STAND A NY OF HIS DECISIONS, I FOUND HIM SUPER CRINGY AND UNFUNNY. HE RUINED MY BEAUTIFUL LAURA BALDWIN BECAUSE HE WAS THERE WITH HER AND I SIMPLY COULDN'T UNDERSTAND WHY SHE WOULD BE INTERESTED IN HIM. HATED HIM. So that's it! The audience was a bit sparse and the advertizing of the show is pretty bad so I'm afraid it might not last long in London but I really loved it! I'll try to catch it again.
