Squid Thrill Brooklyn Steel with Newest Album

Squid – Brooklyn Steel – February 10, 2024

I could be off the mark here, but in recent years, there seems to be a much bigger appetite for weird stuff in music. The pop stars are weaving in longer, riskier samples. Harpists are playing sold-out live shows. The drum-and-bass DJs are making ambient albums. Experimentation is back, baby, and thankfully that meant a busy night for the exceptional Squid, the five-piece post-punk outfit from South London, who played Brooklyn Steel on Saturday night.  

They are touring behind their second album, last year’s O Monolith, another boundary-pusher that follows their first LP, Bright Green Field, from 2021. Notably, both releases came out on Warp, a label that leans mostly electronic and has put out records by artists like Aphex Twin, Kelala and Mount Kimbie, among other innovators. The marriage may seem to be a strange one, but any close listener will get it, especially live.

Take “The Blades,” which begins with a spare, quick-cutting loop. Guitar layers in, but so do the stranger bleeping, synth-y moments expected of Warp. At first listen it emulates the übercatharsis of “Pamphlets” (Bright Green Field) — a quiet bridge, a strong closing build — but it fine-tunes, mellows and sophisticates it into something even grander. That the two were back-to-back closers — a kicker that quite frankly worked beautifully — was a perfect distillation of the band’s evolution.  

They played new (“Undergrowth”) and old (“Narrator”), but the show calibrated the two well, working in genres that ranged from psychedelic to metal. Navigating that ship through such changing waters is Ollie Judge, lead singer and drummer. He makes you wonder why drummers haven’t always been the default leads. His vocals go quiet, large, then pained, then ecstatic. He stands, drums and saunters, the energetic and emotive core of Squid’s ethos. 

The band’s latest has them extending past simply playing and into composition, and to witness them move further into their own was fantastic. A deeply unique band with a seemingly endless well of invention. Squid forever. —Rachel Brody | @RachelCBrody

another terrible playlist round-up

i think i'll just do these periodically every few months! as of last year i started archiving my own physical collection (including borrowing from libraries and friends) and have moved away from streaming music entirely. i cannot in good consciousness continue paying for streaming services and dislike how their algorithms have impacted my own media habits, especially in regards to music (another post for another time, i'm saving for my blogspot)

hangover remedy - what the title says! featuring some kelala, carly rae jepsen, IU, taeyeon, pinkpantheress and slowdive. easy starts to the morning after a night out but enough to wake you up.

me when i can't just rot in bed all day - my partner and i collaborated on this one. songs for when you just want to rot in bed all day. featuring the likes of faye webster, airiel, chelsea wolfe, title fight, superheaven, mbv. a great little snapshot of our separate tastes.

me time - i think i was writing a story about a young woman who realises she's a werewolf trapped in a castle and i have no idea where i was going with that, but here's the playlist. vibes are all over the place. featuring patti smith, joan baez, liz phair, soho rezanejad, fiona apple, abba.

lighter than air - a fun playlist that i like to listen to for background noise for cooking, editing, working from home. a little on the nu metal side of things, with other 90s bands i like. featuring: sunk loto, rina sawayama, sugar ray, limp bizkit, nine inch nails.

whatever, go my scarab! - songs for cursing your enemies with a plague of scarabs. featuring riders of rohan (my favourite discovery last year - yes it's another Tolkien metal band but they also sound like the B-52's and i kind of think it's campy brilliance), doro, motorhead, helm's deep, bathory, king diamond. you get the drift.

tobias forge's RAGE abc guest programmer playlist - yes it's not mine but he picked a great selection of tracks. really loved the 3am-4am "just fuck me up" section that featured ABBA, the black eyed peas, daft punk, lenny kravitz and bruce springsteen back to back. if that isn't a mood at those hours of the day i don't know what is.

Kasubsi Registrasi, Asriani Dermawan mengungkapkan bahwa langkah ini diambil untuk memastikan proses demokrasi berjalan dengan lancar dan hak pilih seluruh warga negara, termasuk WBP, tetap terlindungi.

Kegiatan ini juga diikuti oleh Kabag Pemerintahan Polewali Mandar, Ketua Bawaslu Polewali Mandar, Dandim 1402 Polewali Mandar, Kapolres Polewali Mandar, Kepala Dinas Dukcapil Polewali Mandar, serta Seluruh PPK yang ada di Kabupaten Polewali Mandar.

Sementara itu, secara terpisah, Kakanwil Kemenkumham Sulbar, Pamuji Raharja mendukung upaya yang dilakukan oleh jajaran Lapas Polewali. “Sehingga melalui Pelaksanaan kegiatan ini, diharapkan dapat memberi dampak terhadap peningkatan kinerja di jajaran Kanwil Kemenkumham Sulbar” tutup salah seorang Kakanwil unit wilayah di bawah kepemimpinan Menkumham, Yasonna itu di sela-sela waktunya.

on music, I finally listened to the entire shut the fuck up talking to me, the new George Clanton *chef's kiss*, I was trying to get into the music Karl/Frank/Anton talk about just to keep up so like hatchie, yeule, erika de casier, kelala, etc.

on Youtube, aside from Kpop, lots of James Hoffman, I caught up with the new Philosophy Tube video (the one with LegalEagle), Tekken 8 matches (lots of Knee, CBM, JDCR, etc.)

On Twitch, Dacktem and lmyourfather mostly, but I don't keep up much with Dacktem as often because he streams late (and been doing lots of chill runs)

On games, have an ongoing sword-summoner hardcore run and was playing a bit of Tekken 7 lately

2016. In terms of music, it’s been an ok year. Most of the people that I like released music this year. This year saw the finally’s: Finally, Kaytranada got a commercial release. Finally, Chance the Rapper got through the critical mass. Finally, Solange advanced into critical and commercial mass. There was a whole lotta Drake! A whole lot! I got into the Chainsmokers and Justin Beiber, (I never expected that). The most exciting thing has to have been the surprise returns, like Craig David, Maxwell, and the Red Hot Chili Peppers. I guess I have to say this has seemed like a pretty consistent year in music. I’ve noticed overall, this year has the total lowest number of scrobbles comparatively this entire decade.
