Please note that I took most of my information from online, and I didn't personally read/ watch everything, so there may be some mistakes. Also, some of the not-canon characters are very likely aspec, but just not confirmed. And especially if they say/ do really obviously aro/ ace stuff, I wasn't sure if it's enough to put them in the "confirmed" category. (e.g. Saiki literally said he isn't attracted to anyone regardless of gender, and never wants to be in a relationship. But there are still people who doubt his aroace-ness. (And at this point I don't see how it could be anything but aphobia, to deny the mere possibility of him being aroace so vehemently lol.) ) Also: Sadly, I couldn't find good aro-allo characters except Claire/ Claude from "baker thief". There is tons of good a-spec representation in that book (also more side characters that I didn't mention here), but I couldn't really find any fan-art. So then I just slapped the entire book cover on the collage.

Good Burger 2
Tumblr media
With the desire for nostalgic media increasing as the days go on, no one was shocked when it was announced that there would be a Good Burger 2. It was a bit surprising before this announcement when people started digging into the sorted collective pasts of Kenan Thompson and Kel Mitchell. For longtime fans of the two stars, we knew what they were doing. Kenan had separated himself from Kel many years before. His success on the Critically acclaimed show "Saturday Night Live" has earned him accolades beyond what his original All That fans were expecting. Kel on the other hand after Kenan distanced himself and left All That after he did, Kel all but disappeared in some ways. Many people had nearly forgotten about him before the great nostalgia race began. When these two 90s titans reunited originally on Saturday Night Live, Kenan and Kel could barely contain their joy or natural chemistry. They had to take a moment and let the audience compose themselves from how excited they were to see them on stage together! this was a heartwarming scene that made the wheels start turning for some executives. If people want to see them together again, then lets see just how much!
Here we are now in 2023, with a second Good Burger movie that is streaming directly to Paramount plus. Are there new fans being raised by 30-somethings that will likely find this movie a gas? Absolutely! That is exactly who this movie is for, kids. While watching it, I appreciated the many callbacks to a series that I knew and loved so much. As a middle school teacher, I took it upon myself to incorporate a Good Burger skit into my lesson plans the following Monday after watching it! There were some classic moments and choice easter eggs that were a delight to see. Every cameo was appreciated and each star was recognized and utilized well for their joke as needed. Kel was clearly elated to be playing the character of Ed once again. He threw himself into his performance and even wrote in a classic "I love orange soda" line for the real fans. I am sure that joke flew over your own kid's head! At no point was I ready to turn the movie off, it was not a bad movie and is perfect for a family night of nostalgic clean fun.
Now, if I were to be honest about this movie as say....someone who writes reviews in their spare time as an adult with a real opinion, my goodness it was like scratching ones nails across a chalkboard! I was not ready to be tired of Kenan and Kel. Well, it is not necessarily me who is tired of them, Kenan is. You could feel it in his performance that he was a tad checked out in the heart department. Upon watching their earlier clips when they were young as well as their reunion clip you can see it on his face that he is okay with the idea of working with his old friend as long as it is not something that is long-term. In many scenes his lines felt like they could have been delivered more emphatically or he was straight reading the script. This is a man who has been doing and writing sketch comedy since he was a kid. The entire movie felt like a forced sketch for Kenan specifically, which is a little sad. He began his adult career trying to step away from this comedic relationship and stand on his own two feet. He has found himself back in this revolving door representing Nickelodeon just like he is 16 again.
Kel on the other hand, has come to terms with the fact that this character, is what he is truly recognized for. Other than having a love affair with orange soda, Kel's career has been summed up by his role in this one skit. We do not give him credit for his voice acting work in various shows and movies. We do not praise him for the live action acting he has done playing funny and serious parts. We as a fan base have pigeon holed him into this one role that we just cannot seem to let die. This is not to be a criticism to Kel to not do nostalgic work if this is what he enjoys. He seems to have a heart for youth and does not stray away from the opportunity to make kids laugh. However, we as fans should allow him to grow with us as well as be able to entertain future kids. He is a versatile actor who is capable of more just like his counterparts Kenan and Nick Cannon.
Nostalgic materials are the reason I have a review blog in the first place. We enjoy this kind of media because we long for a time when things were simpler. If people like Kenan and Kel want to use their time to entertain families and garner support from their now adult fans, they should do that. Kenan hopefully will find his spark in this form of comedy again. He appears to be on autopilot for his old friend's sake. Years of neglecting a friend can be repaired with love, not guilt. I would recommend this movie for anyone with children...or anyone who is high on the regular and needs a corny laugh.

The American black comedy crime thriller A Simple Favor was released in 2018, and its cast members in it are extremely recognizable. The film, directed by Paul Feig from a screenplay written by Jessica Sharzer, is a suspenseful story based on the 2017 novel of the same name, written by Darcey Bell. The movie stars Blake Lively and Anna Kendrick in the main roles, among other notable actors in supporting roles. The plot centers on a small-town video blogger who attempts to solve the mystery behind her friend's disappearance.
A Simple Favor was released by Lionsgate, and the movie garnered critical praise upon its theatrical release. Most critics praised the chemistry of the ensemble cast, and also wrote enthusiastically about the movie's shocking plot twists and turns. The film ended up making $5.9 million on its first day alone, and grossed a total of $97 million worldwide, on a budget of only $20 million.
Related: The Equalizer 2021 Cast & Character Guide
Indeed, the movie has an impressive cast led by its main stars, Blake Lively and Anna Kendrick. Henry Golding, Andrew Rannells, and Linda Cardellini are some of the supporting cast members, as well as Jean Smart, Rupert friend, Eric Johnson, and Dustin Milligan, among other actors.
Tumblr media
Blake Lively takes on the role of Emily Nelson, Hope McLanden, and Faith McLanden in A Simple Favor, and her character's life is the most interesting part of the film. Viewers know Lively from teen movies The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, Accepted, Simon Says, and other early-aughts flicks. Later, she appeared in movies ranging from New York, I Love You to The Town to superhero flick Green Lantern, which she starred in alongside her future husband Ryan Reynolds. In more recent years, Lively has appeared in The Age of Adaline, The Shallows, Café Society, and All I See Is You.
Following her success with A Simple Favor, Lively starred in the movie The Rhythm Section in 2020 alongside actors Jude Law and Sterling K. Brown. The movie follows a grieving woman who goes on a destructive path for revenge after learning that the plane crash that killed her family was actually a terrorist attack. To date, that is Lively's most recent role. From 2007 - 2012, of course, Lively starred as Serena van Der Woodsen in the hit show Gossip Girl, for which she won several accolades.
Tumblr media
Like Lively, actress Anna Kendrick, who portrays Stephanie Smothers in A Simple Favor, has been working in Hollywood for several years. She first became a familiar face for her role as Jessica Stanley in the Twilight movies. Following the franchise's end, Kendrick began to take on different roles. She played Natalie Keener in Up In The Air, Janet Taylor in End of Watch and voiced Courtney Babock in ParaNorman. In 2012, Kendrick reached full stardom for playing Becca Mitchell in the popular movie Pitch Perfect. After that, Kendrick appeared in a slew of movies from 2013 until A Simple Favor in 2018, including  What to Expect When You're Expecting, Drinking Buddies, Cake, Into the Woods, the two Pitch Perfect sequels, and The Accountant. She also appeared in the movies Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates and voiced a character in Trolls.

Following her turn as Stephanie in A Simple Favor, Kendrick played Kendra Glack in the 2019 movie The Day Shall Come and portrayed Noelle Kringle in the holiday movie Noelle, released the same year. She also reprised her role in Trolls for the movie's 2020 sequel.
Tumblr media
Andre Rannells, who plays Darren in A Simple Favor, began his career in television. He voiced characters on children's shows, like Pokémon and Yu-Gi-Oh!, as a kid, and the early aughts also saw his break into theater. He had numerous roles on the stage, and in 2011 played Elder Kevin Price in The Book of Mormon as an original cast member. From 2014 - 2018, he also had roles in Hedwig and the Angry Inch, Hamilton, Falsettos, and The Boys in the Band.
Related: Disney+ & HBO Max Already Have One Thing In Common: Anna Kendrick
Rannells became a familiar face on the screen when he joined the cast of Girls from 2012 - 2017, playing Elijah Krantz in 35 episodes. This role led him to other television parts, including Bryan Collins in The New Normal and Frazier H. Wingo in The Knick, as well as guest appearances in hit shows like How I Met Your Mother and Glee. He also had voice roles in the shows Sofia the First, Welcome to the Wayne, and Vampirina. Most notably, in 2017 Rannells joined the cast of Big Mouth. He continues to play that role into 2021, as well as continues to make occasional guest appearances on other shows. In terms of film — Rannell's most recent roles were in the 2020 films The Boys in the Band, The Prom, and The Stand In. And before appearing in 2018's A Simple Favor, he had parts in 2016's Why Him? and 2015's The Intern.
Tumblr media
Linda Cardellini plays the part of Diana Hyland in A Simple Favor. Cardellini first became a household name in 1999, when she starred as Lindsay Weir in the cult television series Freaks and Geeks. That wasn't her first time in a series, though; throughout the late 1990s, she appeared in shows like Bone Chillers, 3rd Rock from the Sun, Clueless, Step by Step, Promised Land, Kenan & Kel, and Boy Meets World, among other programs.
Post-Freaks and Geeks, Cardellini continued her career in TV, appearing as Samantha Taggart in ER as Bliss Goode and Shelly in The Goode Family. She also had turns in popular shows like Gravity Falls, Mad Men, and New Girl, and took on the serious role of Meg Rayburn in 2015 for 33 episodes of Bloodline. In 2019, Cardellini began portraying Judy Hale in the Netflix series Dead to Me, opposite Christina Applegate.

Of course, many movie watchers know Cardellini's likeness from feature films. She appeared as Chutney Wyndham in Legally Blonde, and famously portrayed Velma Dinkley in Scooby-Doo and its sequel. Cardellini also had parts in Brokeback Mountain, The Lazarus Project, Kill the Irishman, and Daddy's Home and its sequel. Superhero movie fans know Cardellini as Laura Barton, the wife of Clint Barton aka Hawkeye in Avengers: Age of Ultron and Avengers: Endgame. And Cardellini has also starred in critically acclaimed films like Green Book, in which she played Dolores. In 2020, Cardellini portrayed Mae Capone in the movie Capone.
Tumblr media
Actor Henry Golding portrays Sean Townsend in A Simple Favor. Golding has been a presenter on BBC's The Travel Show since 2014. Today's movie watchers primarily know him for playing the role of Nick Young in the hit 2018 movie Crazy Rich Asians, for which he won a Teen Choice Award. He also took on the role of Tom in the recent 2019 romantic-comedy holiday flick Last Christmas. Some lesser-known movies Townsend has appeared in include Pisau Cukur, Monsoon, and The Gentlemen. His most recent project is Snake Eyes, which is in post-production. In addition to being a longtime host on BBC's travel show, Golding has hosted shows including Football Crazy, Welcome to the Railworld Japan, and Surviving Borneo.
Tumblr media
Jean Smart, who played Margaret McLanden in A Simple Favor, is most known for playing Lana Gardner on the NBC sitcom Frasier - a role for which she won two Primetime Emmy Awards. She started her impressive acting career in both film and television in the late 1970s. Some of the notable movies she's appeared in include Piaf, Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey, Snow Day, Sweet Home Alabama, Garden State, Life As We Know It, The Accountant, and, most recently, Superintelligence.

Smart has also appeared in television shows other than Fraiser throughout her career. She voiced Helen Ventrix in an episode of Batman: The Animated Series, played Sally Brewton in three episodes of Scarlett, and played Elinore "Ellie" Walker for 13 episodes of High Society. She also gained recognition for playing Martha Logan, the First Lady, in the show 24, and for portraying Regina Newly in 35 episodes of Samantha Who?
Smart was in numerous other television series up until her turn in A Simple Favor, and also appeared in small guest roles in popular shows like Halt and Catch Fire and The McCarthys. In more recent years, Smart portrayed Floyd Gerhardt in Fargo and Melanie Bird in Legion, as well as Arlane Hart in Dirty John, Mimi in Arrested Development, and series regular Agent Laurie Blake in Watchmen.
Tumblr media
Rupert Friend played Dennis Nylon in A Simple Favor. The actor began his career with the 2004 movie The Libertine. He first became a familiar face when he took on the role of Mr. Wickham in Pride & Prejudice. Throughout the early aughts he had several other significant roles, including Sandy Mardell in Outlaw and Demetrius in The Last Legion, as well as Lt. Kurt Kotler in The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas and Prince Albert in The Young Victoria.

TV-wise, Friend is most known for portraying the character Peter Quinn in 58 episodes of Homeland. For his performance as Peter, Friend was nominated for numerous accolades. He also appeared in other shows since the end of Homeland, including Dream Corp, LLC, Strange Angel, and, most recently, Anatomy of a Scandal.
Tumblr media
Eric Johnson as Davis: played Flash Gordon on the eponymous 2007 - 2008 television series, as well as Whintey Fordman on the show Smallville and Jack Hyde in the Fifty Shades franchise, among other roles.
Dustin Milligan as Chris: played Ethan Ward on the teen drama show 90210. Most recently, of course, the majority of television watchers know him as Ted Mullens from Schitt's Creek.
Bashir Salahuddin as Detective Summervile: appeared in the movies Snatched and Gringo, and since then has been in Marriage Story and The 24th. He's also known as a writer on Maya and Marty and for portraying Keith Bang on GLOW and Office Goodnight on South Side.
Kelly McCormack as Stacy: known for playing Zeph in the sci-fi show Killyjoys and for playing Betty Anne on the show Letterkenny. Most recently, she wrote, produced, and starred in the feature film Sugar Daddy.
Sarah Baker as Maryanne Chelkowsky: was previously in the movies The Campaign and Mascots, as well as shows like The Kominsky Method and Louie.
Melissa O'Neil as Beth: first gained fame for winning the third season of Canadian Idol in 2005. She's also known for her roles as Two/Rebecca/Portia Lin on the sci-fi series Dark Matter and as Officer Lucy Chen on the police drama show The Rookie.
Of course, viewers have probably seen these listed stars in other movies and TV shows, too. This is a non-exhaustive list of the films and shows that they are most likely recognized from. When all of these actors came together to work on 2018's A Simple Favor, it was a notable project. The movie was praised for its ensemble effort and continues to gain traction among movie watchers today.

So despite all of my love for Machineries of Empire, I have a few nagging thoughts from somewhat unresolved storylines that I would have liked to see a little more resolution for in the novels. I may have just missed the significance of a particular passage in concluding these particular lines of thought, but for the most part, the ending left me wanting.
1) Servitors
It was clear that the servitors played a massive role in the creation of the Compact, the maintenance of the empires, and most of all, in Cheris’ personal life. As the stories continue, it’s clear that these machines are sentient, and have their own enclaves with their own alliances. Their roles in missions across the novels are critical, and it’s obvious that they have their own opinions on what’s happening across the hexarchate. As more and more characters grow accepting of servitor’s as more than obedient servants, I grew hopeful that they would actually begin to gain some social progress in the hexarchate. Especially after learning of Cheris’ acceptance in certain enclaves, I had expected that the role of servitors was indicative of some eventual change. Rather, RG ends with Hemiola tentatively befriending Jedao, and the fate of servitors as a race is left up in the air.
After establishing them as key characters to the plot (particularly after writing much of Revenant Gun from the perspective of a servitor), as well as their sentience, their quiet ending left me wanting much more. Their radical, selfless contribution in Ninefox Gambit established a quiet storyline of their sentience and ability to make decisions, but that was all but abandoned, even after building up individual servitors as important characters to the very end. Hell, we even learn that characters become fluent in Machine Universal to be able to communicate with the servitors as equals. A conclusive end for servitors, or a direction for their status in the hexarchate, would have been much more satisfying than a tentative conclusion solely for Hemiola.
As an afterthought, the Kel servitor “rebellion” in which all of the Kel aboard Revenant are slaughtered by the servitors, seemed to be both very abrupt and very rushed among the careful writing. It seemed like something slapped together to give Jedao a continuing crisis and an additional layer of trauma that would serve as a vehicle for Dhanneth’s death, rather than a critical point of servitor development. If anything, it further established the need for a fitting conclusion to the continuing servitor storyline, but it’s brushed off in a sentence stating that those servitors had acted independently.
2) Voidmoths and Revenant
At least it seemed that most of the servitors were at least content with their tasks in serving, and did so voluntarily. They could choose to die for a mission voluntarily, had choices in watching dramas or listening to music, and formed their own alliances and opinions. But we learn from Jedao Two and Revenant that servitors aren’t the only sentient beings that make up the backbone of the hexarchate. The moths, allowing for FTL travel and calendrical warfare, have been sentient all along. Moreover, they’ve all been “harnessed” and forced into service against their will, part of Kujen’s plan for a world operating under not just his calendar, but his puppet strings. The only lasting conclusion we are given to the story of the moths is reference to Revenant’s escape from service, with a passing sentence that the moth “went rogue” and departed from the warmoth swarm. After having established that Jedao Two is not quite moth, not quite human, and that the moths themselves are living beings, I thought we would gain some more widespread acceptance of their sentience.
Further, Revenant’s behavior and general attitude also seemed to be a rushed subplot. In fact, the thought of moth sentience and enslavement seemed to only be expanded upon to give Jedao’s new form a decent explanation. Revenant was a very difficult read as a character, because they went from being angry at Jedao, to pleading at him to save the mothyard, to withholding information from him at the very end. It’s character was frustrating, particularly in how it interacted with Jedao, and I feel as though it had the potential for so much more development before its eventual end. Its final anger towards Jedao and eventual self-liberation seemed almost out of place, and the brief mention of Revenant to Jedao later was far from enough to conclude the tale of the moths, particularly with Jedao still in play.
The servitor’s story stretched out over three books, and the voidmoth’s across one, but neither were given any real conclusion, despite their key roles across the novels. More than just being crucial to the success and personality of many of the character’s we’re introduced to, it’s established that these are sentient creatures with their own opinions and alliances. Brushing them off at the very end, when our “human” characters all got incredibly fitting conclusions, seemed amiss, especially after the huge amounts of progress made towards servitors. Maybe I’m nitpicking, but I felt that even another few chapters could have given readers a direction to look when it came to the entire races of sentient creatures that the hexarchate used to achieve their ends.

Movie Monday! #110
‘Movie Monday’ is a blog post I share every Monday talking about the 3  movies that have caught my attention to the most that week. Sharing how  their plots, how their trailers attracted me and what the critics have to say  about them (if it’s already released).  You can click on the name of the movie to see the trailer.
1. Widows (2018)
Tumblr media
Veronica, Linda, Alice and Belle have nothing in common except a debt left behind by their dead husbands' criminal activities. Tensions soon rise when they take fate into their own hands and conspire to forge a future on their own terms.
Starring Viola Davis, Michelle Rodriguez, Elizabeth Debicki, Cynthia Erivo, Daniel Kaluuya, Colin Farrell, Jacki Weaver and Robert Duvall.
Tumblr media
This movie can been creating a lot of awards buzz, not to the level of A Star Is Born but enough to get me interested. The ensemble cast and writer (Gillian Flynn) are certainly big attractions and the trailer is very interesting so I’ll definitely be keeping a look out for it. My favorite thing about the trailer is that it nicely combined the fun of Ocean’s 8 with the intensity of Gone Girl.
2. Mid90s (2018)
Tumblr media
In 1990s Los Angeles, 13-year-old Stevie escapes his turbulent home life by hanging out with a new group of friends he meets at a local skate shop, plunging him into a world of fun, danger and excitement.
Starring Sunny Suljic in the lead role.
Tumblr media
With supporting roles by Lucas Hedges and Na-kel Smith.
Tumblr media
This indie darling is written and directed by Jonah Hill starring a spectrum of actors, Lucas Hedges being my favorite. The early reviews are all positive and seem to point out that Jonah is creating his own style as a filmmaker rather than borrowing from all the great directors he has worked with and that’s a wonderful thing.
My favorite part about the trailer was the cinematography and the general vision. Even those few minutes could not hide how perfectly he captured the nostalgia of that decade and the young boy’s carefree spirit. I’m so genuinely looking forward to seeing it.
3. Young Adult (2011)
Tumblr media
Mavis is an alcoholic writer of adult novels. She decides to return to her hometown and reunite with her ex-boyfriend, only to discover that he is married and has a daughter.
Starring Charlize Theron in the lead role.
Tumblr media
With supporting roles by Patton Oswalt, Jill Eikenberry, Kate Nowlin and Patrick Wilson.
Tumblr media
This movie has been on my to-watch list for so long and I’m finally planning on watching it sometime this week. For me, the biggest attraction to the movie, apart from Charlize, was the fact that her character is an anti-hero. There are very few female anti-heroes written nicely and apparently, this is one of them so I’m not letting that go. The trailer certainly made the movie seem a lot of fun!

Star Wars Resistance: 10 Things That Need To Happen Before It Ends
Star Wars Resistance released an intriguing trailer for its second season, along with confirmation that this will be the final season for the show. While Resistance has had its critics, it's been a fun and upbeat show that's further fleshed out the galaxy during the sequel trilogy era. Most of the first season took place in the months leading up to The Force Awakens, and eventually caught up with the events of the film towards the end of the season.
The second season will take place during The Last Jedi, and even dive into the time prior to The Rise of Skywalker, with the epic series finale reportedly leading into the events of the final Skywalker saga film before its December release.
Before the final season airs, let's explore Star Wars Resistance: 10 Things That Need To Happen Before It Ends.
RELATED: 5 Reasons Star Wars Resistance Is Already Better Than Rebels (And 5 Why It Never Will Be)
10 Tam Makes Her Final Choice
Tumblr media
Arguably the most shocking event in the first season was the protagonist Tam leaving her friends and joining the First Order. A season's worth of deceiving and undervaluing Tam--and some manipulation from the First Order--culminated in her final decision. With this being the final season, audiences will be given a definitive answer to whether Tam remains loyal to the First Order or if her ultimate loyalty shifts back to her friends aboard the Colossus.
Once Tam realizes the First Order doesn't value her and is just manipulating her for their own gain--or once she is more exposed to the kinds of atrocities the First Order commits--Tam will likely return to Yeager, Kaz, and her other friends. Agent Tierny can certainly be persuasive, though, so all bets are off until the series finale.
9 Crossover With Events From The Last Jedi
Tumblr media
One of the best moments in Resistance so far was when it intersected with a major moment from The Force Awakens. Kaz watched a recording of General Hux's fascistic speech, followed by Starkiller Base's destruction of Hosnian Prime, the same planet where Kaz grew up and where his family still resided. It was a powerful and uncharacteristically dark moment for the series and it actually improved The Force Awakens as audiences now had an emotional connection to Hosnian Prime and its people.
With Resistance now taking place at the same time as The Last Jedi, it should also find ways to smartly intersect with major events from the film. The best crossover would probably be for Kaz and his friends to be among the allies Leia and the Resistance contact prior to the Battle of Crait. Maybe we'll even see the Colossus try to make it to Crait in time. At the very least, Kaz and company should hear about what happened on Crait, and have the hope it inspired be used to strengthen their fight against the First Order.
8 A Space Battle With Kylo Ren
Tumblr media
Easily the most exciting thing about Resistance's new trailer is the appearance of Kylo Ren, who unlike General Hux and Captain Phasma, hasn't previously appeared in the show. None of Resistance's protagonists stand a chance against Kylo Ren if they come face-to-face with him. They might stand a chance in a space battle, though. Kaz is a gifted pilot, as are Jarek Yeager, Torra Doza, and the rest of the Aces.
RELATED: Star Wars: 20 Crazy Things Kylo Ren Did Before Episode VII
Audiences know from The Last Jedi that Kylo Ren is quite the pilot as well, and it would be incredible to watch him duke it out in space against the pilots of the Colossus. This is a viable way that the protagonists can confront Kylo Ren and the First Order while managing to survive and maybe even win the fight.
7 A New Home For The Colossus
Tumblr media
The Colossus being a mobile space station made it possible to escape the First Order. The new trailer teased that the Colossus is facing many issues as it travels through space, though. Just as Castilon was its home for many years, the Colossus needs to find a new planet to call home.
This could definitely serve as an essential piece of the series finale, with Kaz and his friends bolstered by the fact that defeating the First Order means making their new home safe for everyone. Finding such a place will be an ongoing storyline throughout the season, one that might have parallels to the Ghost crew trying to find a suitable base for Phoenix Squadron in the second season of Star Wars Rebels.
6 Eila Connects Further With The Force
Tumblr media
Eila and Kel escaped the massacre led by Kylo Ren on their home planet of Tehar. They found refuge on the Colossus, with help from the likes of Neeku and Kaz. One of the most intriguing elements of these children is it appeared that Eila was Force-sensitive. Eila had dreams that foretold the future--often having the same dream repeatedly--and the dreams always came true. It sounds like a Force vision, and being a Force-sensitive child could explain why Kylo Ren wanted to wipe out her village, and why the First Order cared so much about finishing the job by locating Eila and Kel.
The new trailer shows Eila and Kel looking at mysterious symbols and an artifact that a new characters says is "a power source from an ancient time." Whatever happens on that planet could confirm that Eila is Force-sensitive and allow her to become more attuned to her abilities.
5 Joining Up With The Rest Of The Resistance
Tumblr media
While those aboard the Colossus have their own battles to fight, they need to join up with the larger Resistance by the end of the season. They cannot outrun and outfight the First Order on their own forever. The First Order can only be defeated with all pieces of the Resistance united, including Kaz and everyone on the Colossus.
RELATED: Star Wars: 10 Things The Comics Added To The Canon
Fans deserve to see Kaz reunite with Poe Dameron and BB-8, both of whom were instrumental in Kaz joining the Resistance and in his growth as a leader and spy. Poe, BB-8, and the larger Resistance can help Kaz and his friends. Then in The Rise of Skywalker, Kaz and company can return the favor by helping in the final battle against the First Order, which hopefully means some cameos, probably similar to the Rebels cameos in Rogue One.
4 A Larger Role For The Aces
Tumblr media
The Aces are gifted pilots who defend the Colossus, escort important shipments, and participate in the station's races. They were heavily promoted and marketed before the first season, generating much of the excitement around the show. Only Torra Doza and Hype Fazon received much focus, though, making the hype--pun intended--a disappointment.
This season needs to give all the Aces a larger role. Fortunately the new trailer did tease this with a few different shots. It shouldn't be hard considering how important the Aces will be in defending the Colossus against the First Order. Maybe the Aces will even have a chance to go up against Kylo Ren in his TIE Silencer.
3 Kix The Clone Trooper Appearance
Tumblr media
Thanks to the appearance of the legendary pirate known as the Crimson Corsair in the Resistance trailer, there's actually a chance fans could see the clone trooper Kix from The Clone Wars. The Crimson Corsair appeared in the trailer after a mention of bounty hunters hired to find Kaz. On a job when the Crimson Corsair thought he would find kyber crystals that once belonged to Count Dooku, he found the clone trooper Kix in frozen stasis.
Due to this, Kix was still alive and ended up joining the Crimson Corsair's crew. This means there's a chance Kix will accompany him in the hunt for Kaz. He would be the first Clone Wars character to appear in Resistance, and would ensure that at least one clone trooper has appeared in all three of the animated Star Wars shows that Dave Filoni helped create.
2 The Defeat Of Agent Tierny And Commander Pyre
Tumblr media
Audiences will have to wait until The Rise of Skywalker to see if the Resistance can defeat the likes of Supreme Leader Kylo Ren, General Hux, and the First Order. Agent Tierny and Commander Pyre--the show's main First Order antagonists--will need to be dealt with before the end of the Resistance, though.
A victory against Tierny and Pyre is quite likely and will prove the First Order is vulnerable, thereby providing the Resistance with further momentum and hope as they continue their fight in The Rise of Skywalker. The bigger question is whether Tam will still be with the First Order and go down with Tierny and Pyre, or if she'll rejoin her friends from the Colossus and choose the Resistance.
1 A Mentor's Sacrifice
Tumblr media
Every generation of Star Wars features characters who serve as mentors, with the mentors ultimately making sacrifices that save those they love and to pass the torch to the next generation. Resistance should follow that tradition, with Kaz's mentor Jarek Yeager and Torra's mentor--and father--Captain Doza making sacrifices to save the Colossus and defeat the First Order.
Both Yeager and Captain Doza made sacrifices in the first season for these very reasons, but with this being the final season, they can step up their game and make even more memorable and powerful sacrifices.

Tight squeeze for Harry Maguire’s Man Utd bow
Harry Maguire's Manchester United debut was the occasion for the Yorkshireman family.
The club handed over company box No. 1 for their Old Trafford collision with Chelsea and sources told Sports Agenda that the group had made the best of it.
There were so many out there that there was nowhere to put the food! & # 39; they said before they added: & # 39; They were a really nice group – you could see that they were all just happy for him and really enjoyed the opportunity. & # 39;
Meanwhile, members of the Manchester paparazzi have so far not landed a shot of the English man Maguire without a red face.
& # 39; He is ashamed to see us & # 39 ;, said a photographer. & # 39; He's clearly just a modest guy who's not used to the spotlight you get at United. & # 39;

NO SIGNS ABOUT THE PERFORMANCE OF CANTONA
The culmination of last week's Champions League draw in Monaco was Eric Cantona & # 39; s acceptance speech, in which he Shakespeare & # 39; s King Lear quoted. It can be revealed that the Frenchman announced what came in the briefing before the event.
When asked what questions he would like to answer, Cantona replied: & # 39; I don't answer questions. I will speak. & # 39;
The only problem with the subsequent words from Cantona, which evoke memories of the famous press conference on & # 39; gulls & # 39 ;, was that they had not been heard by journalists on the Grimaldi forum to beat the draw.
Sound problems with televisions that referred events to the press room from the adjacent hallway led to panic calls to technical staff who quickly sent in speakers.
That meant that those present at Cantona were later shown the rejection of a question by another interviewer in another phase. When asked what the prize meant to him, the Frenchman answered abruptly: & # 39; Prices are subjective & # 39 ;.

PCA BEAT TO NEW DIRECT APPOINTMENT
The professional Cricketers & # 39; Association has beaten their football counterparts at the PFA for the appointment of a new chief executive with an announcement about the successor to the departing David Leatherdale expected this week.
The PFA, on the other hand, seems content to serve Gordon Taylor for a long time to say goodbye. He saw him remain in charge for 12 months, despite the fact that he had announced his resignation earlier this year. .
SKY SPORTS CHIEF SCOTT UNDER THE COSH AFTER MONTH OF HELL
Not the best few weeks for interim chef Steve Scott of Sky Sports News.
Hot on the heels of the cock-up who saw an embargo broken around the Wales team, the broadcaster criticized the fact that he had rated a disease countdown clock that tapped to Bury's eviction deadline of the EFL.
While Sky insiders say others were responsible, each happened on Scott's guard and increased pressure on the favor to replace veteran Andy Cairns on a permanent basis. Highly respected Comcast director Francoise Champey is also a strong contender for the job.
LEACH FACES TAX INVOICE ON FREE GLASS AGREEMENT
Specsavers responded quickly to a call from Ben Stokes' fellow Headingley hero Jack Leach with free glasses for life. However, the optician may not have seen the potential for the brave tailender to be hit with a bill from HMRC, which never misses a trick.
A spokesperson for Specsavers said they are continuing to work on the agreement and will ensure that such problems are covered.
In 1975, the unlikely Ashes star (and specs with specifications) David Steele came to an agreement with the tax man after a local butcher had promised him lamb chops for every run up to 50 and then steaks for everything outside. Steele joked that the final count kept him going for two years.

£ 52M LORD & # 39; S RENOVATION STARTS THIS WEEK
The reconstruction of the Compton and Edrich Stands in Lord & # 39; s begins week. The estimated costs are £ 52 million.
However, such figures are inevitably rising and MCC has taken out loans for £ 6 million for its assets, the three properties in the adjacent Grove End Road – including the house of grace and the favor occupied by chief executive, Guy Lavender – in case this happens because the reconstruction is delayed.
These loans were provided by Companies House. If costs rise, the rebuilding of the offices of the Cricket Board in England and Wales within the East Gate will be delayed or demolished.
CARROLL & GAZEBO PLAN RETURNS TO THE DRAWINGBOARD
Andy Carroll & # 39; s bid to build a country cottage in the £ 4.7 m Essex mansion with six bedrooms that he bought from Sir Rod Stewart and was started by boat makers.
The expansive monument of the Newcastle striker already has a football field, tennis courts, a boat lake, swimming pool, stables and a two-bedroom cottage.
But planners from the Epping Forest Council judged the proposal despite no neighbors' objections, and said that the & # 39; would detract from the historic appearance and architectural character of the building & # 39 ;, while a conservation officer also develops & # 39; alien & # 39; and & # 39; named chunky & # 39 ;.
Planners have rejected Andy Carroll's plans to build a country cottage in his £ 4.7 million mansion
CATES FORCED TO RETURN TO RACISM QUESTION
Viewers will watch the Burnley vs. Sky Sports. Liverpool clash on Saturday night noticed another blunder while Kelly Cates interviewed Virgil van Dijk.
The presenter seemed ready to ask the Dutchman a question about Kels Zouma of Chelsea, who became the newest footballer who was targeted by racist idiots on Twitter, before returning after apparently receiving a message in her ear that Van Dijk did not want to talk about it.
Cates, who dealt well with it, said that she had received false information.

ECB LOS KEY FIGURE AS MOTLEY LEADS TO DUBAI
The Cricket Board of England and Wales under pressure to take advantage of this wonderful cricket summer, has one of his most valued staff members are lost.
James Motley, who left Sky at the start of the year to take on the daunting task of taking care of The Hundred, leaves the role after less than 12 months after his wife conquered a top job in Dubai.

Beautiful Boy I’ve never been a parent or a junkie (yet!), but I found a lot that resonated in Beautiful Boy, a low-key film based on a pair of interconnected memoirs from father and son David and Nicolas Sheff. David (Steve Carell) chews himself up over son Nic’s (Timothée Chalamet) spiral into meth and heroin addiction, asking what he could have done to prevent it and wondering how he can fix it. Nic, meanwhile, copes with not only his body’s betrayal but with the disappointment he feels, both self-directed and from his patient, confused father. From Beautiful Boy’s perspective, Nic is really only guilty of having a curious mind, while David, a good father in every recognizable way, might have simply waited too long to show his beloved son some tough love. The performances make the whole thing sing. Carell and Chalamet both do expectedly good work, and they’re matched by Amy Ryan as Nic’s mother and Maura Tierney as his stepmother. Beautiful Boy is driven by the real-life horror of watching a loved one succumb to drugs, but it’s a family drama devoid of most of the genre’s manipulative qualities, substituting them with honesty, empathy, and fully drawn human beings. NED LANNAMANN Meridian 16 (Regal) & Oak Tree
Beetlejuice Newly dead Adam and Barbara Maitland aren’t down with the Deets family, who moved into the couple’s home after their unfortunate passing and don’t seem at all phased by the Maitlands’ attempts at scaring them out of it. Enter rotten, pervy Betelgeuse (“Beetlejuice”), who sells himself as a bio-exorcist capable of getting rid of their living pests, though he turns out to be a dangerous nuisance who’s more trouble than he’s worth. Tim Burton’s first film (and my first Tim Burton film, too) is on-point with vibrantly weird visuals, quick-witted comedy, and strong before-they-were-big-stars performances from (goddamn he looks young) Alec Baldwin, Geena Davis (extra dimply, woman-next-door funny), a teenage gothed-out Winona Ryder, and Michael Keaton at his comedic one-liner-throwing best—like, has he ever been this good? It’s bizarre yet delightful and still tons of fun three decades later. Even the dated special effects retain their charm. LEILANI POLK Central Cinema Friday–Sunday
Bohemian Rhapsody I heart Queen. The song this film is named for was on the soundtrack of my youth. But early reactions to the film biopic (that’s more about Freddie Mercury than the British rock band he led) have been mixed to bad. The New York Times’ Kyle Buchanan tweeted that Bohemian Rhapsody “is a glorified Wikipedia entry but Rami Malek plays Freddie Mercury (and wears his wonderful costumes) with incredible gusto.” Our own Chase Burns was not a fan at all. (“The 15-minute long shit I took during the middle of the movie was more nuanced than the straight-washed hagiography peddled in that movie theater.”) In sum, enter at your own risk. LEILANI POLK Various locations
Boy Erased This film features the most prolific twinks of our time: Troye Sivan, Lucas Hedges, and Nicole Kidman. These three gays will dazzle the screen in this year’s most star-studded gay flick—oh wait, Troye Sivan is the only gay among them. Lucas Hedges has said he’s “not totally straight, but also not gay and not necessarily bisexual,” and Nicole Kidman, despite being the world’s most famous twink, is surprisingly a 51-year-old Australian woman. While think pieces on Hedges’s sexuality will probably dominate the conversation around Boy Erased, it looks like a cute holiday movie about gay conversion therapy. Go see it! CHASE BURNS SIFF Cinema Uptown & Meridian 16
Can You Ever Forgive Me? In Can You Ever Forgive Me?, Melissa McCarthy stars as real-life best-selling biographer Lee Israel. But this isn’t a life of literary glitz and glamour that you’re imagining after such a juicy introductory sentence! After falling on hard biographer times, Israel turned to a life of writerly crimes, forging letters from long-dead authors to make just enough cash to pay her rent, take her cat to the vet, and aggressively drink. This all sounds sad, I know, but there’s warmth underneath, thanks to Israel’s friendship with the charming, equally self-destructive Jack Hock (Richard E. Grant). McCarthy, who’s made a career of portraying loud women, is a different kind of jerk here—a real person who lashes out not for laughs, but because life is hard and she knows she’s making bad choices. ELINOR JONES SIFF Cinema Egyptian & AMC Seattle 10
Cinema Italian Style The Cinema Italian Style is a weeklong SIFF mini-festival featuring the best in contemporary Italian cinema. This final day, watch Euphoria, about two very different brothers who come together in difficult circumstances. SIFF Cinema Uptown Thursday only
Dr. Seuss’s The Grinch If you’ve ever wondered how the jammy vocals of Benedict Cumberbatch would sound coming from a neon-green Seussian monstrosity, you have your chance in this visit to Whoville. This time, the Grinch has a doggy sidekick named Max. Angela Lansbury voices the Mayor and Rashida Jones does Donna Lou Who. Various locations
Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald Twee hunter Newt Scamander returns for more J.K. Rowling-inspired exploits. Of the previous Fantastic Beasts film, critic Bobby Roberts wrote: “It is eager to please and amaze, but undersells its spectacle until that spectacle becomes perfunctory. It milks sentiment drier than the Arizona desert Newt’s trying to get to. It’s a goofy blast of kid-lit in love with Looney Tunes-inspired adventure—except when it’s a sour metaphor for child abuse and intolerance that owes one hell of a debt to Stephen King’s famous prom queen.” The new one has Johnny Depp as the titular dark wizard. Various locations
First Man The space stuff is great. When La La Land director Damien Chazelle’s biopic about Neil Armstrong focuses on NASA’s insanely ambitious and dangerous plan to put a man on the moon, it thrums with thrill and threat—from the astonishing scope of space to the claustrophobic confines of the command module, the best parts of First Man are worth experiencing on the biggest screen possible. Ryan Gosling offers an excellent turn as Armstrong, but even Gosling can’t liven up the story’s more pedestrian elements, which largely involve Armstrong’s relationship with his wife (Claire Foy) and his stoic mourning of his daughter. First Man bears the familiar curse of the biopic—it somehow feels both overlong and unsatisfying—and never quite escapes the shadow of The Right Stuff, Philip Kaufman’s remarkable 1983 film that told a similar story with more grace and smarts. Still: the space stuff is great. ERIK HENRIKSEN Meridian 16 & AMC Pacific Place
Free Solo This highly praised, dizzying documentary reveals the heart-stopping journey of Alex Honnold as he conquered Yosemite’s El Capitan wall without ropes or safety gear. You don’t need to be a climber to be thrilled at this glimpse into human accomplishment. Various locations
Hep Cats Cats in movies have symbolized everything from elegance to curiosity to evil, but sometimes they are simply their wonderful selves. Hep Cats delivers a handful of these ailurophilic flicks, like Harry and Tonto, a charming road movie about a man and his cat forced to leave their Upper West Side apartment. It stars Art Carney, who won an Oscar for the role. JOULE ZELMAN Northwest Film Forum Saturday only

Meow Wolf The adorably named Santa Fe artist collective Meow Wolf caught the fancy of George R.R. Martin, who helped them take over a disused bowling alley for an epic art exhibition. But success comes with its own struggles. Enter their world and find delirious, DIY inspiration. Northwest Film Forum Thursday only
Mid90s Mid90s tells the story of 13-year-old Stevie (Sunny Suljic) who, after he’s rejected and bullied by his older brother Ian (Lucas Hedges), finds new role models in a crew of skaters led by the wise and magnanimous Ray (Na-kel Smith). Stevie’s willingness to repeatedly fall on hard concrete as he tries to maneuver a skateboard that looks half his height endears him to his newfound friends. The resultant feelings—and the film’s title—places Mid90s squarely in Hill’s nostalgic memory, where he both dramatizes and idealizes the kids’ adventures. SUZETTE SMITH Various locations
Monrovia, Illinois The amazingly prolific documentarian Frederick Wiseman (Ex Libris, In Jackson Heights, National Gallery, and 40 more films!) explores a tiny American hamlet steeped in old farming traditions and periodic ceremonies, like church services, Town Council meetings, Freemason rituals, weddings, and funerals. Northwest Film Forum Friday–Sunday
Mystery Train Exactly one year ago, I was walking down a street in Memphis, Tennessee, when I had what is known as a Proustian experience (or what literary critics call an “involuntary memory”). But in Proust’s novel Remembrance of Things Past, the involuntary memory sends the narrator, Marcel, to a town he visited as a boy (Combray). My memory, which was triggered by crossing a street, sent me to a film, Jim Jarmusch’s Mystery Train, which is set in Memphis and concerns young Japanese lovers who are obsessed with American popular culture. The couple walks around Memphis a lot. And while I walked around Memphis, I found myself walking, not through my Memphis, but theirs. This movie does not have much of a plot. CHARLES MUDEDE Grand Illusion Thursday only
Narcissister Organ Player The feminist body-shocker Narcissister, who carries out her performance art mostly naked and masked, muses on her Moroccan, Jewish, and African American roots and her intense relationship with her mother in this absurdist, experimental documentary. Northwest Film Forum
Night Heat They proliferated in anxious postwar America and still occasionally return to brood and smolder onscreen: films noirs, born of the chiaroscuro influence of immigrant German directors and the pressure of unique American fears. Once again, the museum will screen nine hard-boiled, moody crime classics like this week’s Night of the Hunter, one of the most unusual and thrilling films ever to come out of Hollywood. The veteran actor Charles Laughton took inspiration from the stylistic extremity of German Expressionism to film this hallucinatory tale of a psychotic preacher pursuing two young children who know he’s murdered their mother. Clear your Thursday night schedule for this one. Seattle Art Museum Thursday only
Night on Earth Five cabbies and five passengers around the globe share funny, weird, and intimate moments in Jim Jarmusch’s quirky classic—a little inconsequential, but charming and beautifully acted. Thanks to Roberto Benigni’s performance, you’ll never look at a pumpkin quite the same way again. Grand Illusion Thursday only
The Old Man and the Gun Based on a true story, the latest from David Lowery (Ain’t Them Bodies Saints) reteams the filmmaker with Robert Redford, who plays Forrest Tucker, the charming, handsome leader of a trio of geriatric bank robbers. Forrest’s partners in crime are Teddy (Danny Glover) and Waller (a fantastic Tom Waits). Like one of Forrest’s disarmingly polite robberies, The Old Man and the Gun starts out pleasant and sweet before revealing hints of darkness—each of these characters is deeper than they first appear, and one’s never quite sure what any of them are going to do next. Lowery is happy to tag along, capturing lives that are polished by time and dented by experience but remain bright and sharp with wit and passion. Watching Redford have this much fun is, as always, a goddamn delight. ERIK HENRIKSEN Admiral Theater
Overlord While carrying out a vital pre-D-Day mission, a ragtag bunch of American Dogfaces stumble across a small French village that’s just packed to the rafters with secret Gestapo experiments. (Note: In what may be a controversial move in this day and age, the Nazis are unequivocally depicted as the Bad Guys.) Genre mashups are often content to rest on their high-concept laurels, but this J.J. Abrams production is very willing to do the grunt work, solidly establishing its war movie bonafides—an early paratrooper sequence is genuinely alarming—before transitioning into full-tilt body horror. (This is an extremely moist movie.) If this sounds even remotely like your sort of thing, Overlord’s combination of heavy artillery and horrid creatures should prove to be pretty irresistible. When it comes to B-Movies, nasty, brutish, and short all count as positive traits. ANDREW WRIGHT Various locations
Ponyo You can pretty much guarantee that anything with Hayao Miyazaki’s name attached to it will be superbly wrought, fantastically animated, and delivered with a fine dose of poignant storytelling. He has left a fine legacy of films in his (no longer retired, for now) wake, including Ponyo, which has its 10-year anniversary this year and is being celebrated in a series of screening events across the country. This anime fantasy is loosely based on The Little Mermaid (Hans Christian Andersen’s version, not Disney’s), about an austere, potentially malevolent warlock/sea king whose young amphibious daughter runs (swims) away from her home. Sosuke, the little boy who scoops her from the waves, believes she’s a goldfish, names her Ponyo, and introduces her to a small slice of his world before her father finds her and brings her back to their underwater kingdom. But Ponyo’s taste of food and friendship fuels her next escape, setting off a chain of events that will change her (and Sosuke) forever. This film gets me choked up every time. LEILANI POLK SIFF Cinema Egyptian Saturday only
Prospect Is this the first major work of Northwest science fiction? Indeed, it imagines a moon that is like the evergreen forests that surround Seattle. The whole planet is green—gothic green. And the light on this strange moon is sharply slanted like Northwest light. The superb film is about prospectors (a father and daughter) looking for a root-made gem that will make them rich. The daughter, however, is keen to get off the planet because the line to it is about to be shut down. But her father is money-mad. If he does not make it here, he will never make it anywhere in the galaxy. Translucent insects float through the air. There are other money-mad prospectors in the endless forest. You do not leave this planet without paying a big price. Money is the root of all evil. CHARLES MUDEDE Meridian 16
Sadie The latest from local filmmaker Megan Griffiths (Lucky Them, Eden) has a perfect Northwest feel. Sadie is 13 and lives with her mother in a dilapidated trailer park. Sadie worships her absent father while being impossible with her harried mother. She is smart and precocious, trying to come to an understanding of how the world works, but the adults around her have their own problems. The film shows the way adults communicate with kids, never talking to them directly, trying to fool the kid and themselves. This leaves young people with half-ass ideas, and they run with them without really understanding the situation, with mixed results. The film has a great cast: The wonderful Melanie Lynskey plays the mom, with Sophia Mitri Schloss as Sadie. GILLIAN ANDERSON SIFF Cinema Uptown Sunday only
Seattle Turkish Film Festival The Turkish American Cultural Association of Washington will present the sixth annual edition of their community-driven, volunteer-led festival featuring a rich panorama of new Turkish films. For the final weekend, check out Something Useful, an intense drama about two women, one of whom has a grim mission, who meet on the train; The Legend of the Ugly King, about the Kurdish actor/director Yilmaz Güney; and Taksim Hold’em, about a man determined to play his weekly poker game despite the massive anti-government protests taking place outside. SIFF Film Center Friday–Saturday
SHRIEK!: Thirst The class focusing on women and minorities in horror is back with a screening and discussion of Park Chan-wook’s Thirst, about a saintly Catholic priest transformed into an insatiable blood-drinker and sex fiend by a risky medical experiment. Here’s an excerpt from the review Lindy West wrote at its release: “Thirst is a horror movie, albeit a silly one. Actual scares are few to none—instead, Sang-hyun’s painfully earnest consternation at trying to live as an ethical monster (losing his priestly virginity, daintily sipping a comatose man’s blood straight from the IV) make it a funny, cartoonish, and strangely sweet fable about ethics versus instincts: ‘Is it a sin for a fox to eat a chicken?’ Unfortunately, Thirst drags on for a punishing gazillion hours—ethical monster shacks up with manipulative harpy and the complications pile up like bodies (because, you know, they literally are bodies)—and you feel like you’ll never see your home or your mom or the precious golden sun again.” It might not be the most positive of reviews, but you’re guaranteed to get a good discussion out of it with organizers Evan J. Peterson and Heather Marie Bartels. Naked City Brewery Sunday only
Suspiria Call Me by Your Name director Luca Guadagnino’s reinterpretation of Argento’s film Suspiria is a precisely choreographed mindfuck, and progressing through the film’s six acts feels like peeling off layers of an onion until you reach the reeking core. It’s swift, brutal, and breathtaking, but it’s also frequently bogged down by overcomplicated subplots and distracting details. The original premise remains the same—ancient ballerina witches trying to live forever by sacrificing students—but this time around, the Markos Dance Academy is located right next to the Berlin Wall in post-World War II Germany, and Susie Bannion (a very meh Dakota Johnson) is a runaway Mennonite from Ohio. Whatever parallels Guadagnino hoped to draw between the traumatic aftermath of the Holocaust and the bloody chaos going on inside the coven ends up feeling more confusing than profound. CIARA DOLAN AMC Pacific Place & SIFF Cinema Uptown
A Star Is Born If you’re entering the theatre simply desiring a couple solid musical numbers, then your $15 will not have been spent in vain. Unfortunately, the movie falls flat as only a two-dimensional vignette of common misogyny can. Ally, the lead character played by Lady Gaga, is a woman who knows she has talent but needs to hear that she is sufficiently pretty to be an appropriate vehicle for said talent. Like any woman vying for a piece of the proverbial pie, she is just one man away from success. One man to lead her, to mold her, to push her through to the finish line. This man-shaped void is filled by her father, her husband, her manager, her producer, her choreographer, and her photographer, all of whom take credit or receive credit from other men for her creative output and appearance. A Star Is Born is a classic tale, meant to be mutable, fluid, to adapt within each age it is reimagined. But the flaws of the inherent narrative are too real, too every-day damaging to continue being told in the form of a cinematic fantasy. KIM SELLING Various locations
Voyeur Presents ‘The Prowler’ The November edition of VOYEUR brings “one of the bleakest noirs ever made,” Joseph Losey’s The Prowler, about a man who’s determined to get what he feels society owes him—an unhappily married woman played by Evelyn Keyes. Scarecrow Sunday only
Widows Arriving a week before Thanksgiving, Widows is an overflowing plateful of entertainment, piled high with juicy plot, buttery performances, and plenty of sweet genre pie. It’s a mash-up of pulp and prestige that shouldn’t work well on paper but plays out tremendously well on-screen. Director Steve McQueen (12 Years a Slave, Shame) cowrote the twisty script with novelist Gillian Flynn (Gone Girl, Sharp Objects), and while the interconnected webs of Chicago’s crime underworld and its racially charged local politics contain more than enough intrigue, the performances are what’ll grab you. I mean, just look at this cast: Harry (Liam Neeson) leads a crew of career criminals (including Jon Bernthal and Manuel Garcia-Rulfo) in a heist that goes disastrously wrong, leaving their widows Veronica (Viola Davis), Linda (Michelle Rodriguez), and Alice (Elizabeth Debicki) with a serious problem when crime boss Jamal Manning (Brian Tyree Henry) and his enforcer brother Jatemme (Daniel Kaluuya) demand they return the stolen money. The real fun is watching McQueen, Flynn, and this ridiculously large talent pool of actors lay the groundwork for a slick, rich, tantalizing thriller, and then connecting all the dots.
