Up, down, up, down, up, down.

The steady rhythm of Eddie's chest was the only thing keeping Steve sane in this cold and sterile hospital room. He didn't even trust the heart monitor hooked up to him to tell him if he was really alive, he had to see each breath fill Eddie's lungs.

They came so close to losing him, Steve came so close to losing him. They'd gone on one date, the week before dead cheerleaders and nightmare wizards. Steve had been looking forward to seeing Eddie more over spring break now that he'd taken Dustin's advice to get to know the other boy, although he had probably meant friendship.

Up, down, up, down, up, down.

Each breath he matched with his own, a haunting echo to the heartbeats he forced onto Eddie's crushed ribs. Air just like the ones he took and breathed it into him begging him to just keep breathing.

He hadn't wanted the first time he met Eddie's uncle to be a teary phone call and a comforting hand on his shoulder. He couldn't leave, barely ate, the kids were fine, Max was awake they'd all be ok. He had to keep watching Eddie.

Up, down, up, down, up, down.

He'd watch forever if he had to.

"Keep breathing, please."

He hopes Eddie can hear him.
