Ashura (2005)
My rating: 5/10
It's fine, I guess, but there's nothing very engaging or unique about it - I kind of got distracted for a bit in the middle, and I had no trouble following the plot afterwards. Also, that one sex scene is just interminably long, to the point where it just gets really awkward to watch.

“Escaflowne Bible” scans [page 17]
The fourth and last page of the Q&A part of the promised scan/translation! Thanks @legendofthesevenstars for the proofread, correction, and tips!
Please note: This book was published after the first episode 19 broadcast, so some plot points are intentionally left open. Here we go!
🧚 What is the meaning of the words that Varie said to Hitomi? @militarypenguin, @dreamingthroughthenoise
Varie, who appeared in the Mystic Valley, said to Hitomi: “You must stop predicting the future!” What was the meaning of that? “Hitomi, divining with a worried heart, pulled a bad future into place.” That’s because Gaea was created by human wishes. It reacts sensitively to strong feelings that people carry in their hearts, unfortunately both good and bad. (answered by: Kazuki Akane / director)
🐥 Why is Van not supposed to show his wings?
Since he was small, Van was told by his mother Varie not to reveal his wings until the time comes (episode 9). What time might that be? “Like Atlantis on Earth once, Gaea might face the same kind of crisis and Varie may have left Van behind as one of the preventative measures in anticipation of that.” There seems to be a hint at the final episodes hidden behind the director’s words. But it could have also been a mother’s concern for her son, seeing that people feared the Draconians. (answered by: Kazuki Akane / director)
☄️ Are there any other descendants of Draconians, other than Folken and Van? @radical-rad1986, @knighting
Right now, Folken, Van, and Varie are the only individuals who inherited Draconian blood left. But even Varie's status is a bit uncertain. “Speaking of Draconians, their form is spiritual rather than physical. So what is Varie at one moment, may next become something like a dragon. And Folken and Van may simply be the only two Draconians who are known to exist." Does that mean there could be other, hidden Draconians? “Possibly, maybe two or three hundred years ago.” (answered by: Kazuki Akane / director)
🧟 Why did Hitomi sympathize with Zongi? @militarypenguin
The doppelgänger Zongi is killed by Dilandau (episode 11). Why did Hitomi sympathize with him, seeing the vision of his death multiple times? “Because of Hitomi’s pure heart, she is sensitive even to the pain of strangers, without any reason to.” That said, Van may feel the same sympathy for others, because he also has a pure heart. (answered by: Kazuki Akane / director)
🐲 Why are the controls of the flying dragon mode Escaflowne different?
In episode 18, Escaflowne transformed into a high-speed aircraft in the shape of a flying dragon. This looks to be the result of highly-advanced Ispano technology. Nevertheless, why are the controls of a knight-shape and dragon-shape Escaflowne different? “It’s not clearly said in the settei but the person entering the blood contract with Escaflowne must use a drag energist of a wilful dragon. A bit of that dragon’s spirit would be present. Therefore, in the dragon form, a bit of the natural dragon movement is added to the pure mechanical movement.” (answered by: Kazuki Akane / director)
📺 Is it true that there were some unaired scenes?
Even though they were drawn up on the storyboards, it seems quite a few scenes from Escaflowne were cut due to scale (time) constraints. Hitomi scenes, Dilandau scenes… “In episode 〇 it’s a *beep* Hitomi scene, episode 〇 it’s Folken’s 〇 △ ☐ ✕  scene, many of scenes like that got cut. ”What about that *beep* scene?...”Yes, about that… I  would like to add those cut scenes to the video release.” Tight lipped… so it seems we will have to find out ourselves. Still, looking forward to it! (answered by: Akira Toba / Sunrise production design)
Notes:
Literal translation of the term “ryuujinbito” (officially translated as “Draconians”) is “dragon god people”.
The  〇  △ ☐ ✕  symbols are used to hide/censor information. The scenes referred to may be Hitomi’s bathing scene in episode 6 and the talk about Folken’s failed dragonslaying in episode 2. The unaired scenes were later added to the VHS/LD releases in Japan.
I will continue posting the rest of the book without translation after this. Or wait, there is one interesting question each for the main characters in the profiles section, I might do those!
