TIME FOR THE LONG ASS 2024 REVIEW

i am once again gonna review each highlighted piece i have made in 2024 so far like last year even though it's sort of unnecessary i have a bit to commit to

JANUARY

jan's piece is my smash poster celebrating the 25TH anniversary! this after i got rlly into making giant multi-character ensemble pieces, and i've wanted to do a poster like this to celebrate smash, so i'm glad i was able to step up to plate. usually i think my art from january ages pretty bad in these reviews, but i actually still like it from the composition, colors, and the drawings of the characters. i still have the print of it hanging in my room! ^o^ other highlights from the month is the complimentary poster i did with smash ultimate's dlc cast... well i kinda mention that out of obligation because i actually do think this one aged like ass, mainly the shading on the characters looking pretty bad (especially as a print). i think i shoulda saved this idea for later in the year to time it with smash ultimate's release day of december 7 (i am extremely deadline-pilled) but i probably wouldn't have cared by then so i just did it like, immediately after the 64 poster. so it probably smacks of burnout + i can't shade with blue that well

FEBRUARY

this one sorta represents seven whole drawings i did for one series. it's my seven piece set of artworks based on mothy's evillious chronicles, and i chose rilliane's because i think at the time i was putting this together i thought she came out the best (i began assembling this starting april 2024 lol), but idk! i still think she's pretty solid but i think she's tied up with kayo and banica. one thing's for sure, i know sateriasis is my least favorite of the bunch by a wide ass margin, i really wish i executed it better! not much other interesting highlights for this month besides my other vocaloid art series, the alice of human sacrifice ace cards. i think they aged alright but again this is another idea that i wanna execute better in the future.

MARCH

oh boy another series!!! this was part of my four part series redrawing the crossed paths artwork from octopath traveler ii. i chose the one featuring partitio and osvald because it was my favorite at the time. i still think it aged pretty nicely but it has some rendering hiccups that rlly bother me but in terms of colors/the background i still like it. if i had to pick a new favorite, it might go to throné and tenemos or cassti and ochette. another notable highlight of this year was a piece of oc art i made. i need to do something unabashedly overdramatic and angsty with my ocs again cuz i still like this one too. i think i opted out of selecting this one to highlight since cropping a face was kinda awkward lol.

APRIL

an overdramatic oc art has been highlighted! another one i like (it's almost like i picked my best for this chart). it was sorta the origin of me using my favorite watercolor brush in procreate to have an extremely rough idea of the colors that naturally blend together, creating a pretty cohesive palette when i render it (which is the current basis for how i render in my current style). april otherwise is kinda boring idk i don't like a lot of the other drawings here lol. this utsu-p album redraw ft robin is still pretty cool tho imo.

MAY

i feel like i had some nice variety to pick from, but i chose my improvisational and edgy grima drawing since i think stylistically it stands out the most. i found my new favorite sketching/doodling pencil brush in procreate and made a whole drawing using it, and the texture is so niiiice. other highlights: COOL OC ART (ft kandy). part of me feels like it's kinda corny but i was born on da cob so whatever, this one was fun and i still like it!!! there was also my art based on bad end night. i'm a tiny bit mixed on the rendering/colors, idk i was experimenting with a different brush for lining and shading and the slight difference in texture makes it a little weird but that is shit that only matters to me. i think it's a hell of a lot better than the bad end night drawing i made back in 2022, so in terms of "redemption" i think it was successful.

JUNE

kind of a boring month tbh, i got miitopia-pilled again so i was probably busy playing that this month + i was home for the summer and i am extremely lazy when i am at home lol. but to compliment the dive back in my miitopia era i made a sorta sketchy drawing with kandy as my great sage. check it, it's another with my new pencil brush, and i definitely remember having fun with this one (though her robe physics kinda make no sense based on how i drew her ref, i never look at my refs for my ocs/i usually break their designs to fit certain poses silhouettes 💀💀💀). uh i guess the one other interesting piece (imo) from this month was my giant miitopia poster that i was too chicken shit to share proper until recently (if you missed the edit where you can fully see it, there ya go). it's kinda oversaturated vomit and i'm not crazy proud of the execution but it was ambitious and kandy's section still looks really good imo so it has value in that regard to me.

JULY

i participated in my first artfight this july! i drew many cool ocs. by about the halfway mark i got hella burnt out tho and started doing my own stuff to freshen things up (it was also around here when galasynth entered production and i met MANY AMAZING VOCALOID ARTISTS!!! SHOUTOUT TO THOSE MUTUALS :)))))). for this month i chose my poster based on touhou eosd since i think this might be the most gracefully aged piece the whole year (it's probably my favorite!!). the colors just came out real nice.... idk!! a notable piece from this month that couldn't be posted in july cuz of zine nda's was my actual galasynth piece. this was a pretty significant piece since it permanently altered my current rendering/coloring workflow (sorta established in the highlighted piece in april but now with lineart and with a differently textured brush). the touhou poster was created shortly after as a response to this new workflow! other one of note was my perfect cherry blossom poster

AUGUST

brave frobin's design for feh was revealed and i drew it 😼😼😼 (AND I CALLED IT earlier this month. not that i needed to use a lotta braincells but). this was a further step in practicing my new rendering style and see how detailed and meticulous i could get with the colors when i had ONE character to focus on with NO background and i think it was pretty successful. though im glad i posted the wip cuz the colors were probably better there than the rendered... what overthinking does to a mf. another banger from this month was a piece of oc art, it's nothing special but it was a rendered panel redraw of an unpublished comic i made of them and i liked it so yeah. (i also posted my decora una drawing this month which was my scrapped concept for galasynth, but according to my notes it was actually finished in july... but shoutouts to it regardless)

SEPTEMBER

aaaagh this month didn't have much goin on, probably cuz i went back to school around here and the work was getting crazy 💀💀 but i still found time to make something i'm proud of! i drew my oc based on a twitter prompt a mutual of mine shared and i reeeaaally still like it!! especially the details on the corals waow... (i don't really have much else from this month that i consider noteworthy enough to mention here so :P)

OCTOBER

spooky art!!!!! i didn't have much interesting going on this month because again i got very academically demanded of and didn't have much time to draw, BUT i vowed to make a tribute piece to "trick&treat" by oster project for halloween, so i hauled ass to get something ready for that and to have ONE traditional drawing this year (yeah i didn't draw a lot on paper this year unfortunately ☹️☹️☹️☹️☹️). other highlights: a traditional drawing of gekiyaku pills for vsynthtober which i did a whole two prompts of (you just saw all of them) + a digital drawing of geki (i really started to like gekiyaku around this time). as much as i still like the latter's colors and texture it sorta started a bad trend where i sorta just drew characters from the shoulders up with not much pose to speak of + no interesting background just for the sake of coloring it. not that it's completely devoid of value but it was a pattern i was starting to get a little to comfortable with. i'll touch more on this in the closing thoughts section, but this new rendering style did sorta hinder my want to experiment with my digital rendering styles compared to previous years where i prided myself on having a bunch.

NOVEMBER

BOTH of my favorite pieces from this month fall in the same trap as the thing i mentioned above. i picked my drawing of hibiki koto for the chart since the pastels added a nice value shakeup. i STILL LIKE IT, it's nice, but did perpetuate this bad habit/shortcut. the other one was my drawing of great sage kandy (current pfp!). the colors here are pretty fuckin nice still imo, so as a coloring tech demo like this flavor of drawing i was doing i think it succeeded.

DECEMBER

AND FINALLY, the end of the year. i finished my december piece early in the year kinda just to check the box off and get this chart off my back (a totally normal thing people do when drawing art throughout the year). i have wanted to do a legacy of lunatic kingdom poster like my eosd one for a while after falling in love with its ost, but it just felt scary. the characters were very detailed and also there were moreeee 😭😭😭 but i got myself to do it cuz i found myself tempted to fall in the same trap as described in october/november (i was gonna draw koishi with the same crop/thought for the bg/emphasis on rendering. you might see her done by the end of the year), but i was like "NO, i must earn this laziness" and finally did something ambitious again. and yeah, i think i did pretty good with this one, even if the crowding of characters and details is sorta unruly.

ok so maybe i'm a little artistically constipated rn

doing this thorough review has sorta gotten me worried. i talked about this in my review last year, but i wondered if my progress has plateaued since i liked a lot of my art throughout the year and didn't see much significant improvement. but looking back no i definitely improved from 2023, and i'd say i broke some new ground with experiments i did throughout the year (the piece from december is still my banner!!). i also had a few different digital rendering styles i played around with for some variety.

this year, after the completion of my galasynth piece, i got really stuck in a specific rendering style and didn't rlly experiment that much with shaking it up. i also didn't feel compelled to try doing solid lineart or rough paintings, and i got stuck in a "halfbody with basic poses and backgrounds" pit when i know i can do better and more cool if i just TRIED.

i am writing this pretty early in december so hopefully i can bring something new to the table..... idk, maybe the differences in my digital coloring styles are only visible to me, but i certainly notice this repetition and wanna break out of my current bubble! i am working on a collab piece that should go live by spring next year that will hopefully do this :) (and i certainly won't be abandoning my current style, at least not overnight/without trying to evolve it, cuz i really like it and have received many kind compliments from people about it! so thank you thank you!!!!)

i look back at some of my pieces from last year and earlier this year and see some variety in how i go about rendering or textures or colors and wanna go back to that. so that'll be my goal for the rest of december + 2025!!!!! ^_^

anyway that's that, it was a good year despite my current crisis, i think i made some good art. also don't be like me and feel obligated to make nice art every month for an aesthetic chart, i do it cuz i draw fast and i am easily satisfied by them. take breaks touch grass drink water, play and draw. yay!

Tomorrow X Together concludes tour with fun, fiery PH concert

MANILA — The production for Tomorrow X Together’s (TXT) recent concert at the Philippine Arena was nothing short of grand. Pyrotechnics, bursts of confetti and eye-catching backdrops complemented the song-and-dance numbers for a potent feast for the senses.

But more than these embellishments, it was the lighthearted interactions shared by the K-pop stars and their fans that made the concert a truly unforgettable experience.

Donning princely costumes, Soobin, Yeonjun, Beomgyu, Taehyun and Huening Kai kicked off the evening — the final show for their second world tour “Act: Sweet Mirage” — with a “dance break version” of the euphoric disco single “Blue Hour.” The boys spared no time in getting close to the fans, moving towards the B-stage halfway through the song.

“We’re so happy we can spend time with MOA in Bulacan this year following last year’s concert in Manila. Na-miss namin kayo (We missed you),” Beomgyu said, drawing loud cheers from fans called MOA.

He was referring to TXT’s two-night concert at the Mall of Asia Arena last October 2022, which also marked the final stop of the group’s first tour “Act: Lovesick.”

The 26-piece setlist for “Act: Sweet Mirage” incorporated songs that the boys performed in “Act: Lovesick,” but also drew from TXT’s extensive catalog to include newer performances. It also covered all of the tracks from the extended play “The Name Chapter: Temptation,” the group’s only Korean release in between the two world tours.

After removing their tops onstage to reveal more casual and colorful shirts, the boys continued to dish out fun and catchy tracks, such as “No Rules,” “Cat & Dog” and “9 And Three Quarters (Run Away).”

The group also brought angsty punk and pop-rock offerings “0X1=LOVESONG (I Know I Love You),” “LO$ER=LO♡ER,” and “Dear Sputnik,” and boasted its members’ dreamy vocals in “Anti-Romantic.”

In the genre-shifting “Eternally” — which remained a concert highlight in “Act: Sweet Mirage” despite having been performed in the previous tour — white and blue lights surrounded the boys as they delivered the soothing verses. But the moment the song swerves into its throbbing electro sections, the scene turned just as menacing, amplified by red lights and flames bursting from the stage’s front.

Filipino fans were also treated to a performance of “Do It Like That,” the group’s collaboration single with the Jonas Brothers released just last month.

During the encore, the quintet sang “Blue Spring,” an unreleased song dedicated to MOAs, and capped the show with a surprise performance of fan song “MOA Diary.”

The Philippine leg of “Act: Sweet Mirage” — which ran for more than three hours and was produced by Live Nation Philippines — was also a testament of TXT’s growth as entertainers. Compared to the previous concert, the members seemed more confident onstage, not only in their performances but also through their interactions with the crowd.

Concerts have always been a way for K-pop stars to strengthen their bonds with their dedicated fan bases and TXT’s show was no different, featuring engaging talk segments that displayed the boys’ cute and goofy sides.

After “Cat & Dog,” which had the crowd barking, the members gave their own canine impressions. They later whipped out their lightsticks and each took turns in leading the audience to doing playful movements.

Before performing “Happy Fools,” the group also taught the song’s choreography and asked audience members to do the dance challenge, which were flashed on the venue’s big screens.

The Bulacan show also took place a day (or just mere hours) before Huening Kai marked his 21st birthday. As a surprise, the crowd chanted his name during “Dear Sputnik” and joined his bandmates in singing to him near the end of the concert.

“Actually, it’s on my wishlist, to have my birthday and concert happen on the same day,” Huening Kai said.

‘Beautiful’ last concert

As the night drew to a close, the boys thanked fans for making the final stop of their tour a memorable one. “Thank you so much for decorating our last concert this beautifully and to the point that we were able to finish this concert very well,” Yeonjun said.

“Last year, we were able to receive a lot of comfort and love from you guys. I’m so thankful that even today as well, you were able to give us a lot of comfort and love,” Beomgyu said.

Taehyun said the local crowd was “the best [in] singing, dancing, cheering and screaming for us,” adding that he was already looking forward to the group’s next performance in the country.

“‘Act: Sweet Mirage’ in Bulacan ends here but we will come back [for] MOA again to show you how much we have grown with the love that we received so please wait for us,” Soobin said.

I love how cute this is- especially seeing how Alan is making sure he's a good dad to his little bean.

Paisley was actually blonde when she was born, but her hair got darker as she grew- but she has a little bit of the blonde still in the ends of her hair. She also has freckles as well- but they come in when she's about a year old.

she would definitely get lots of attention from her uncles, aunty Kayo and grandpa. She already gets heaps from her mother and father too.

I will also mention Paisley ends up with three younger brothers-Archer (Archie), Mason and Lucas. I'll draw them again soon..

Fun with a New Pen

I got a ten-color pen over the weekend, and I've loved using it so far. I wanted to show it off a bit, and I had an idea today.

I've been obsessing over mothy's Seven Deadly Sins series of Vocaloid songs, so I decided to draw all the sinners today.

Duke Cherubim "Sateriasis" Venomania

I want his outfit. Give me his outfit. Let me be fancy like him.

His song is catchy as all heck and is one of my favorites of the whole series (especially ryusouta's cover, holy crap it's good). Weird for a repulsed aroace, I know, but it is what it is.

Super sad backstory that I can relate to in some ways. I wasn't locked in a basement for all my childhood or anything, but I was teased for my appearance quite a bit, even by some of my loved ones.

Didn't even want a contract with the demon of wrath, but hey, she got a cool pet octopus out of it.

Her backstory hits me right in the feels. Seriously, being ordered by your estranged father to kill your lover--and not even having any idea that he's your father until after the fact? Ouch.

• Has this quiet solidarity with John. They don't talk much or spend much time with eachother but there seems to be this mutual understanding. Maybe it's an introvert thing, maybe it's a ginger sibling thing, maybe they're planning world domination. Who knows??

• Calls Virgil their honourary mum, he's their mama bear.

• Irish accent is very mild but really comes out when angry/exasperated.

we have the babygrills of the blog, kayo and edgy kayo. jk but for ocs i only made like? january of this year i have spent WAY too much time thinking about and drawing them. hunter came first and the loser meowmeow drenched in milk pathetic loser one came after actually :p

i can go on and on about how i designed her appearance in specific but that's for another day :D just know that her blue/yellow color palette is literally a forget-me-not, and hunter's red/yellow color palette is a forget-me-not drenched in blood :D

hunter kayo's "species" is actually called a fiend (a term i just stole from csm LMAO) which is a very rare set of humans that are able to successfully be transplanted with a demonic organ. yes, yui is technically a fiend too in this case.

in terms of power levels, she's karlheinz on steroids (bc their powers have the same origin but u didn't hear that from me) but she's on another level of psychopathic. was she a demon before she was banished, or did god make her a demon? who knows.

kayo, seiji, and yui's relationship closely mirrors lilith, god, and eve's relationship.

i censored it bc i can't believe my first ocs were for THIS GAME...

i have a love-hate relationship with the game don't mind <3 i still think back to these three fondly and i'll talk about their lore for a bit cause this is probably the only time they'll see the light of day.

the two sisters are inazuman-mondstadter(?) in blood, but in nationality they're both inazuman, and their visions have inazuman casing. however, maya lives in fontaine and miya lives in sumeru.

Mikoshi Maya (Wandering Princess)

players complaining about too many sweet girls? here's another one!

from the last name, maya is a descendant of mikoshi nagamasa, the human son of the oni chiyo that served the raiden shogun. that part of her backstory doesn't matter to her as much as it matters to her older sister.

maya's a spoiled and lazy child of one of richest businesswomen of fontaine, and she's also a huge hermit. but she has the power to dream of the future, and it always involves someone needing help. even though she's spoiled, she's very kind in nature, so even as a hermit she often travels to help those she finds in her dreams. she's a dancer and has a very pretty appearance so 'wandering princess' is the title she got from traveling the other nations.

ironically, her nickname in fontaine is actually the rumored hermit, from her tendencies to almost never show up. people see her so little some are convinced that she doesn't actually exist.

her future dreams come into play in an interlude quest.

Mikoshi Miya (Transient Swordsman)

mommy. her name's miya bc i wanted it to match with maya

on the surface, she's a kshahrewar graduate who specializes in mechanics, and she specifically works on machines that can bridge the gap between vision holders and non-vision holders. she's pretty relaxed and sisterly, but at first she seems almost drawn in on herself.

in her past, she was trained as a swordsman by her father, a mikoshi himself. she was considered the greatest prodigy for her time, and she was 'destined for great things'. this was for a specific job that would need way too long to explain but related to this job is the fact that they're a bit of a problem for the fatui. this, and her mother's relationship to the fatui, culminated in someone attempting to subdue her mother with a very special fire made from delusions. however, they mistimed the mission, and instead caught a young miya and her father in the crossfire, which lead to her father's death and miya's hatred for the fatui and for visions.

no matter how much people told her that she was a once in a lifetime swordsman, and how her skill was almost completely unmatched, miya gave up swordsmanship. her skill never saved her father.

miya is intelligent, and always liked making gadgets (her first creation was a mechanical train set at the age of seven), so she instead focused her efforts on helping non-vision holders, including herself, by studying at the akademiya.

miya only gets her electro vision in her story quest, where she confronts her father's killer. she also decides to take up a sword again because of the quest :D

Irina (Witch of Thorns)

mother. that's my name yes but it kind of fits her. i go by yna anyway so i don't really see myself in her JFKJFSD if miya's past seems like a lot this woman has a whole document just about her lore......

to summarize, she's actually gold/rhinedottir's "accidental" creation, something too long to talk about but trust me on this. she's her first child in that regard, and rhine actually tried to raise her like a regular daughter.

they got separated in the cataclysm and irina ended up in mondstadt, which lead to her considering herself a mondstadter. fatui shenanigans happen with dottore and she changes her original appearance to become the witch of thorns, a witch specializing in an artificial flower with medicinal properties. she changes appearances every other decade and pretends she's the daughter of the last witch of thorns, all the way to the present.

miya and maya are her very real daughters though. maya resembles her true appearance more, while miya resembles how she was when she was younger.

(i also have two men who work under irina, yuuya and a runaway adeptus but their lore is like wayyy shorter than the three and these gi ocs are already taking up way too much of the post...)

Lunar Clan

the descendants of lilith's eldest, nyx.

while all demons are descendants of lilith, there is one uninterrupted line of daughters that are genetically clones of lilith herself. while their appearances do have variation, they all one defining trait: pure white hair. in my lore, white hair is a trait impossible to have if you're a pure founder. the only founders to naturally have this hair color are these clones, who are called lilith's avatars. makes you wonder how carla has white hair, though not purely white. doesn't that make him special?

there can only be one avatar born from a previous one in every generation, and any other child ends up as a regular founder. back then, this line of daughters were the royal family of the founder clan, then known as the lunar kingdom when all kingdoms were comprised of founders rather than the subspecies that arose from evolution.

they were overthrown in an event known as the fall of lunacy, a coup d'état arranged by the final queen, scylla's adviser. despite being overthrown, their connection to lilith and scylla's own sacrifices continued to keep them in an important noble position. their estate is located the closest to lilith's tomb, lilith's resting place, a garden of forget-me-nots the size of a town.

another special trait of the avatars is the ability to control and summon butterfly familiars, all with a unique appearance. they can also take up the butterfly's form.

all avatars are assigned epithets at one point in their lives. in their time as royal family, they were usually assigned their titles post-mortem, but afterwards their epithets tend to be assigned some time within their lives.

in order of appearance and birth.

Lilith ; Queen of the Night ; Lilith herself wasn't technically part of the Lunar Clan, as it only began upon the establishment of the Lunar Kingdom, long after her supposed death. Still, she was given the epithet due to her reign on Old Eden, characterized by her absolute control over all territories, like the all-encompassing embrace of night.

Queen Nyx ; Lunacy's Founder, the founder of the Lunar Kingdom and the first to take on the last name Lune. Lilith's eldest.

Queen Raikou ; The Silent Queen, the longest-reigning queen, second to only Lilith herself, ruling for 700 years compared to an average of 100 years. Her rule was characterized by its stability, though quickly overturned when the event known as the War of the Fallen occurred.

Queen Scylla ; The Children's Princess, the shortest-reigning queen, Raikou's daughter, and the final ruler of the Lunatic Dynasty. Becoming queen at a young age after her mother's death, she followed her adviser's ill-meaning advice due to the widespread famine in neighboring kingdoms, earning the peoples' ire and contributing to the successful coup d'état. That adviser's family became the reigning royal family up until Giesbach.

Zarya and Krone Lune ; The Dawn and the Dusk, a pair of identical twins. They are the first and only case of two avatars being born in one generation. Due to magic being the focus of the Demon World, Zarya's interest in medicine and biology was seen as a disgrace, especially compared to her twin sister, who excelled in magic and swordsmanship. Zarya was later exiled from the kingdom, though was reluctantly brought back upon the beginning of the spread of Endzeit. She managed to quell the disease's spread all the way until her disappearance, just before the War of Prophecy occurred, which trapped all Founders within the Pandemonium and allowed Endzeit to spread rampantly.

Cecilia Lune ; The Spring Bloom ; Zarya's daughter, the end to the line of avatars. Founders' eyes don't reflect light, and merely glow. Cecilia's eyes sparkled like stars. Hated, then loved by the people, who grieved her death for centuries.

She was known as the human among demons.

extra fact: the divider icon is the lunar clan's family emblem:3 it used to represent the lunar kingdom as a whole, but upon the fall of the dynasty it became associated with the former royal family instead.

So uh, since this turned out to be way more polished looking than I thought and it’s occurred to me that I’ve never posted them here yet (despite at least Suzuka being first designed in like, January last year) here’s my take on Kazuha’s parents (Kaedehara Kageharu and Kaedehara Suzuka, more info on them below)

Kaedehara Kageharu (楓原景春):

Kazuha’s dad introduced to us in 2.8 and my god do I love him to bits, anyways I won’t type too much since he’s technically a canon character aside from stuff I’ve added to him. Previous clan head, he gradually became disillusioned with the clan’s fortunes and the pressure to maintain face with the death of Suzuka being the final straw for him and he refused to let Kazuha befall a similar fate, overworking himself to death in the process. In case you’re wondering about the hair, he used to have it longer but cut it after Suzuka died.

Kaedehara Suzuka (楓原鈴鹿 née Akame [赤目]):

Kazuha’s mum and Kageharu’s lifelong friend, she’s actually way more introverted than seen here (her and Kageharu are just most comfortable with one another). Her parents were expelled from the Akame school after disputes with how they should go (her dad being one of Akame Kanenaga’s four sons and they were all trying to figure out how to restore the Akame art and school’s prestige since he supposedly abandoned them), leading to them working with the Kaedeharas to try and restore Isshin as well as them becoming social outcasts. Suzuka’s very conflict avoidant since her mother tended to lash out in response to discrimination they faced, and she was also picked on quite a bit due to her heritage.

Her and Kageharu were familiar with each other from a young age because of their parents, and when Suzuka lost her both of them (first her dad as a baby, then her mum in her teens, both to tatarigami) the Kaedeharas took her in as a ward and the two ended up getting married (they’re QPPs and couldn’t really imagine being with anyone else so marrying was the best option for them). Unfortunately, this also meant that Suzuka became more exposed to the pressures of nobility as the lady of the Kaedehara clan and she was primarily the one handling the more social aspects of things since Kageharu was so busy at the forge.

Although she also befriended Kamisato Kayo and had Kageharu, Suzuka had to deal with a lot of nasty gossip, which really wasn’t helped by her struggling with infertility and led to her becoming extremely depressed. Her health wasn’t also the strongest due to exposure to Tatarigami before she was even born, so when Kazuha was born she wasn’t able to recover and died not long after.

Anyways, there’s also a lot that I have written down about them, their parents to the point where I’ve even made a family tree so uh yeah send help, not to mention the tonnes of stuff I’ve added onto Mingli and Caixia since I last posted about them, oh lord

I am literally posting this on a train so here’s hoping the signal stays strong long enough for it to actually upload. 

Kayo’s day! And I mean that in terms of her birthday as well as @thunder-pride so of course I had to write her a fic. This is similar to the undercover gala fic I’m writing, I’ll be honest, except this is a short piece whereas that is becoming an entire monster.

This was not a date.

Kayo reminded herself of that very important little detail for what seemed like the hundredth time. In her defence, it was difficult to focus when Penelope was in that pale pink dress which hugged her in all the right places with just enough glittery embellishments to be elegant without outright drawing attention. It was a long, slinky number which reminded Kayo of the roses which grew within the Creighton-Ward estate or perhaps the dusky blush of the sky shortly before sunrise.

In other words, Penelope looked breathtaking which was proving to be an issue because Kayo couldn’t keep her head in the game.

This was not a date.

This was actually a job. An undercover job, to be precise.

They were here on a favour to one of Penelope’s associates. Their role was to keep an eye on a weaselly man whose list of alleged crimes was not only very current but practically innumerable. Kayo personally believed it would be far easier to drag him into an unoccupied room and get the answers out of him kicking and screaming if needs be, but Penelope had made her promise to stick to their assigned roles and so neither of them were allowed to engage the target.

The music swelled to a crescendo and Kayo snapped her attention back to the room. Penelope’s hand moved to her waist as she took the lead and Kayo focussed on not internally combusting. It wasn’t as if her feelings for Penny were a new development, so she wasn’t sure why they were becoming such a problem tonight. It wasn’t even the first time she’d danced with Penelope in an undercover setting. And yet.

“Are you feeling alright?” Penelope murmured, letting her steps carry her close enough to whisper in Kayo’s ear. Her eyes seemed a darker shade of blue than usual, shadowed by the low lights and the hunger in her gaze for justice. Kayo witnessed that look on every job they worked together and yet each time it grew more intoxicating. “Kayo?”

“I was just thinking.”

“About the case?” Penelope’s voice took on a teasing lilt. She flexed her fingers slightly so that Kayo could feel the faint pressure against her hip through the layers of her suit. “Or something else?” The corners of Penny’s mouth twitched with a carefully restrained smile. “Someone else, perhaps?”

Kayo lost her train of thought. She fumbled for words only to register a flicker of movement in her peripheral vision and mentally cursed herself as she realised she’d lost track of their mark yet again. He was somewhere behind her, but she couldn’t twist to spy him without being too obvious.

Penelope’s gaze hardened as she glimpsed their target over Kayo’s shoulder. “We’ve been spotted.”

“Are you sure?”

“Positive.”

Penelope didn’t falter in the dance, but a glimmer of unease crept into her posture. “He’s coming over.”

“To us? Or is he headed for the exit?”

Kayo read the answer in Penelope’s eyes. Okay, so it was time to improvise. She scanned their immediate surroundings in search of a potential distraction when Penelope leant in close and hissed,

“Kiss me.”

“What?”

“We need to hide our faces, now kiss me.”

Oh no, Kayo thought hysterically, I’m in trouble.

All thoughts promptly evaporated as Penelope delicately clasped her face and pulled her into a kiss. If it were possible to think everything and nothing at the same time, then Kayo was managing it. She hyperaware of her own senses; the scent of Penelope’s perfume, her hands, her own feelings fizzing under her skin, just… Penny. The rest of world didn’t matter. Their target could have been making a deal in the next room for all she cared.

“He’s gone,” Penelope muttered as she withdrew, hesitating as she spied Kayo’s face. “What’s wrong?”

“Nothing.”

Penelope caught her wrist and tugged her across the dancefloor into the empty corridor. It was cooler away from the crowd and Kayo slumped against the wall, tugging her shirt collar looser as she felt a furious blush work its way up her neck. It was just a hot summer’s evening, she thought desperately, wondering if Penny would buy the excuse.

“I’m sorry.” Penelope stepped back, worrying her lower lip. “I overstepped. I didn’t realise… I didn’t plan for our first kiss to pan out this way, but I had to react and it was the first idea which came to mind. So, I apologise. I shouldn’t have prioritised the job over our relationship.”

Kayo tipped her head back against the wall and tried to calm her racing heartbeat. Penelope’s words took a few seconds to dawn on her. She straightened up, unable to keep the breathless exhilaration out of her voice as she questioned,

“Our relationship?”

Penelope attempted to maintain a confident guise as if Kayo didn’t know her well enough to read her nerves from her posture and fretting hands.

“Well. We haven’t labelled it nor discussed it outright, but… I hope I haven’t imagined this…” She searched for the phrasing. “…thing between us. I like you, Kayo. More than might be considered proper and I don’t think I’m wrong in believing that you return those feelings. I thought we were on the same page. We haven’t defined it but we’re certainly more than friends.” She took an unsteady breath, voice becoming uncertain and small. “…Aren’t we?”

The background thrum of voices and music grew muted as Kayo reached across and knocked the door shut. For a few moments, they stood in fragile silence, reading one another’s tells but reluctant to assume those unspoken revelations to be the truth.

Kayo had never seen Penelope so unsure of herself. Her hair was coming loose from her delicately braided crown, yet somehow she seemed even more beautiful that way.

This was more than just an unlabelled situation-ship between them, Kayo mused. She had seen Penelope dressed in an outfit designed to disarm her enemies, prepared for a gala, but she had also seen her in an oversized t-shirt and PJ shorts faded by age yet every single time Penny took her breath away. Kayo wasn’t quite head-over-heels yet but she wasn’t far off either. It was a tentative, tender sort of love, just waiting to grow into its full potential as soon as she unleashed it. And now Penelope was offering her own feelings in return and Kayo wasn’t sure why she was hesitating.

Because really, there had only ever been one answer, hadn’t there?

“We’re more than friends.” Kayo swallowed the wave of giddy nerves, curling her fingers into fists to keep from reaching for Penny before she could finish speaking. “I really wish you’d told me that you felt the same way sooner though. I’ve been dancing around you for months, Pen. We could have- This is not how I’d have kissed you for the first time. I’d have had a plan. It would have been very romantic and you’d have loved it.”

Penelope’s smile grew wider. “You once told me that romance is overrated.”

“It is. But… not if you’re with the right person.”

“Well then.” Penelope tucked blonde strands behind her ears, unable to make eye contact. Her voice was hesitant, almost shy as she ventured, “We could always pretend this kiss didn’t happen. Call it practise for the real one. So, if you’d like – and I know I would like to – we could try again.”

Kayo let her grin creep onto her face. “I’d like that.”

“Really?”

“Penny, haven’t we already established that I am ridiculously, embarrassingly in love with you?”

“Actually, no. We hadn’t established that yet. Although it is a relief given I feel the same way.”

Kayo finally pushed herself away from the wall and offered a hand. “Come on. The target’s long gone, anyway. It’s sunset soon. Let’s go up to the roof.”

Penelope arched a brow. “The roof?”

“I promised you a romantic kiss, didn’t I?”

Penelope took her hand and entwined their fingers with a brilliant smile. “Lead the way, darling.”
