NEWLY LISTED: STARBRAND

Starbrand has been added to the MCOC Wishlist. 

Background

The Star Brand is a mysterious mark that imbues immense cosmic power to the marked.

The brand first appeared in Marvel’s New Universe, which was intended to be a separate world entirely, introduced as a departure from Marvel’s existing fare. Empowerment by the Star Brand was ultimately a rather tragic thing for Kenneth Connell and his various time-displaced identities, who left some power in the hands of a janitor while they self-exiled to explore solutions. They eventually neutralized their own threat to existence, by virtue of the Brand, by locking themselves in a time-loop, but neglected a fragment of Star Brand power left behind with a pilot named Jim.

With the commercial failure of the New Universe books, its characters and concepts were eventually folded into the Marvel multiverse and Earth-616, in the 1980s primarily associated with Quasar and his girlfriend Kayla Ballantine.

During the Amalgam event in conjunction with DC Comics, the Star Brand was associated with a version of another pilot: Green Lantern (Hal Jordan).

During Marvel NOW! event, a young college student, Kevin Conroy, acquired the Star Brand and caused great destruction with his uncontrolled power. He did join the Avengers but his story is a mixed one.

Most recently, the Avengers and Heroes Reborn story have introduced “baby Star Brand,” a baby named Brandy left with the Star Brand when her mother, who previously bore the Brand, died in childbirth. This is a salute to the birth of the Star Child in the original run, whose mother also died in childbirth.

Why Listed Now? 

Everyone who made it to round 5 of the recent Tournament will be listed.

The various characters who have been Starbrand, major or minor, number more than 180 appearances listed on Fandom’s Marvel database. The main two Starbrand heroes, Kenneth and Kevin, combine for more than 95 comics appearances. There are many character mantles currently listed who have far fewer appearances and far less importance to the current run of Avengers and related titles.

SYNOPSIS (FROM COMIC VINE)

On your marks, get set, GO! The Runner challenges all the speedsters of earth to race. Who will win? Who will lose? Will an unexpected victor take gold?

A race to the moon to see who is the fastest man alive!

After reaching the top speed among the Universe beings all, Makkari reaches the Runner to participate a Galactic Race for the most fast being in the universe.

Quasar, meanwhile, tries to reach his girlfriend Kayla Ballantine, trapped on the Earth from the New Universe, by trying to breach the force field that encloses the planet in quarantine, and talking to the Living Tribunal that has sealed such planet.

REVIEW

As far as Barry Allen homages that were out there in the nineties, this is perhaps one of the most respectful. “Buried Alien” shows up in the Marvel Universe just after dying in the DCU, with no memories of where he came from, but he knows he is the fastest man alive. And not only he is the fastest, in the second race (now as FastForward), he could have won, but decided to help Makkari not lose the race. So he is not only the fastest man alive, he is also a very good person.

The second story is a bit better because of the parallels between Makkari and Quasar, both giving up on their dreams in order to not “sell their souls” for quick fix.

Also “The runner” becoming “the runner-up” is genius.

Her worked beside Quasar for a short period of time, battling both Binary and the Super Skrull as she defended Earth during Operation: Galactic Storm. She then accompanied Quasar to the Kree homeworld, Hala, where she was moved by its recent devastation and fought to free the souls of its population from the Soul Eater. Her accompanied the aliens Mourners to the planet Scadam, but found herself unable to watch this planets destruction. Though she had not sought out combat, she saw it as her kismet to be unable to avoid it, and so adopted Kismet as her new name. She fought the invading Black Fleet on Scadam, but was wounded and witnessed from afar the destruction of the invading fleet by extradimensional energies. Seeking these energies, she returned to Earth, where she found them originating from Quasar's girlfriend, Kayla Ballantine, who bore the extra-multiversal Star Brand. When Kismet's questioning of Kayla inadvertently turned into battle, Kayla lashed out, rupturing Kismet's cells and forcing her to withdraw into a regenerative cocoon. Quasar later moved the cocoon to Project PEGASUS for safe storage. When Wiadyslav Shinski suffered a serious stroke, the remaining members of the Enclave stole the cocoon from PEGASUS and removed Kismet from it. They placed Shinski within it to regenerate but also took pains to protect Kismet, who was nearing recovery. Striking on the idea of using Kismet's genetic material to hasten the recovery, they withdrew a sample from her. This was stolen by Frank, an A.I.M. Adaptoid spy who had been observing the Enclave. The Adaptoid injected itself with the sample and adapted Kismet's powers as a new Paragon, but the recuperating Shinski injected Paragon with a genetic weapon they had developed for use against Kismet, destroying him. Grateful that Shinski had saved her, though uneasy they had developed a weapon to destroy her, Kismet wove regenerative cocoons for all three of the Enclave members (they had been injured during the battle) and placed them within, watching over them as "mother" while she tried to determine what it met to be their "daughter." #characteroftheday #ayesha #kismet #marvel

After like... a year of comics of them being apart and Quasar not doing a great job to go save her, him and Kayla are finally hanging out again.

Holy lol... So Stephen was able to tell that there was some huge calamity afoot, so he went around and gathered up all these people to help combat it only for Quasar to pop out the portal and be like "oh don't worry guys, I fixed it."

In the end, Kayla doesn't even need Quasar's help to get back home, so her whole ordeal basically wrapped itself up without any interaction from him at all.. ad also Quasar has his bands both back... still rockin' the mullet though...

So Quasar’s girlfriend, Kayla is taking a shower, when some creep sneaks up on her and he just gets BLASTED by something... this is gonna be a long drawn out thing with Kayla and like... spoiler but I am mostly not a fan of any of it... but I’m getting way ahead of myself...

Sure enough the Brand is powerful enough to get Quaze back home, and he is so excited to be there he even gives Man-Thing a big ol’ smooch on the head.
