Horseriding with Strife. What would it be like?

Strife: Hang on tight, babe!

Horse: *darts onwards like a fucking greased bullet without any sort of warning*

Strife: *emits various cowboy noises*

You: *while half blind, more than half deaf from the swish of air in your ears, and also clutching to Strife for dear life* OOOHH MY GOOOD I’M GONNA DIEEEEE!

I’ve been thinking about it and a memory resurfaced.

Back in 2008, I used to slowly waste my life away as an office assistant. It was a game dev company, so the environment was pretty fun-oriented and devoid of Corporate Rules, but still.

One of my coworkers commuted on a motorcycle. A Kawasaki, if I remember correctly. It was a large, intimidating black beast. (The bike, mind you, not the coworker.) I foolishly expressed my girly awe at such a badass way of getting to work every day. Such motorcycle, so manly, much wow.

“Wanna take a ride?” asked the guy, all smug and beaming - and being the impulsive muffin that I am, I said “Yeah!”

My peeps. That was the most terrifying self-imposed experience of my life so far. (I have a wide portfolio of terrifying experiences that I didn’t bring on myself, but hey, I digress.)

First of all, I had to somehow fit the spare helmet on my glasses - I’m blind without’ em. I managed to do just so, but didn’t see much anyway.

Second, this dude really wanted to impress my young, naive ass. I guess my squees of excitement over his steed (we’re gettin’ all Freudian here, aren’t we now) incited a vicious flame in this otherwise fairly timid, nerdy soul. So he told me to hang on tight (I did) and went full throttle.

Like, 300 km or 186 miles per hour. Inside a damn city.

That we both survived is a testament to how there are days when Fate seriously sleeps on their job.

​A simple life. I have always lived a simple life. I have always felt content by living as a minimalist. I've never required wealth to be content. All I ever required was enough for what I need and just a little left over for what I want.

I have been well-off, twice in my life. In the 1980's, I worked 60-90+ hour six-seven day work weeks for nearly six years, as a baker at a local Danish bakery in Racine, Wisconsin. I was in my early twenties. I lived in a two bedroom/one bathroom spacious apartment. This apartment did not have a dishwasher or laundry machines. I washed my dishes by hand and I did my laundry using the shared washer and dryer in the basement, which was used by seven other apartment residents in the building. I owned a used 1977 Oldsmobile Delta 88 and two motorcycles. My first motorcycle was a used 1979 Kawasaki LTD 400, and the second was a new 1984 Kawasaki Ninja 900. All three of these vehicles were paid off and fully insured. My apartment had nice furniture, a television and VCR, a large stereo system and an extensive record album and cassette tape collection. I owned several guitars and amplifiers. In 1984-88, this was luxury living for me. I had three credit cards that were completely paid off, with a total credit line of about $30,000.00. By the end of 1987, I had about $9000.00 in my savings account. I was 24 years old. I worked very hard for a very long time, to accumulate my wealth in those early years. Having worked so hard to save so much money and perfect credit, it afforded me the opportunity to begin a new life in Florida the following year in 1988.

In March of 1988, I worked part time for a small airline at Orlando International Airport called ComAir. It was a commuter airline that only flew to cities in the state of Florida. Since I was only working part time, the money I made went towards paying half the monthly bills with my roommate and then best friend, Mark, who also worked for the airline, full time. My savings began to slowly disappear. I was using that money to take a well-deserved extended vacation after working so many hours in the 1980's. I wanted to make up for lost time, and I did.

In 1989, Mark and I worked as skycaps for Continental Airlines. My scheduled work week was approximately 30-38 hours per week. By that summer, I was bringing home anywhere from $100-150.00+ a day in cash tips. In 1989, this was very good money for part time work. On July 25th, I bought a brand new 1989 Pontiac Firebird. I moved out of the apartment Mark and I shared, and got my own place a couple of miles away. My new apartment was on the third floor. It had a dishwasher, but no laundry machines. I did my laundry at the apartment complex laundry room facilities. I had nice furniture, my huge stereo, my TV and VCR. I owned several guitars and one guitar amplifier. I was able to afford full medical, full surgical medical insurance, which would be used in 1991, when I had my appendix taken out. I spycapped for Continental Airlines until the end of 1994 when I got on with another skycap company on the other side of the airport. This company contracted for Delta Airlines, which was the biggest airline at the airport in the 1990's. I stopped skycapping and worked for a security company that was contracted for Virgin Atlantic Airlines. This was merely part time work as I was starting my music teaching career at the same time. This would be the last time I was financially well off. I left the airport industry in February 1997 and began teaching full time at a local music store. I would slowly begin to understand what it meant to be a starving artist/musician. I loved my life as a music teacher and musician. I played in several rock bands and one swing jazz band. For the next twenty years, this was my life from 1997 to 2017. Then I hit rock bottom and had to go back to the airport to work a shitty part time job. Teaching music and being a musician no longer paid the bills. It was one of my low points in my life, but not the lowest. That would come two years later. At the end of 2017, I began working full time as a security officer at the airport. In September 2018, I was promoted to a sub-supervisor position. I was making steady income and entertained the possibilities of one day becoming a full time supervisor. On March 6, 2019, I collapsed at work and ended up in the hospital for the next two weeks. I was told that I survived a stroke and a heart attack. Decisions were made by my family, to uproot my entire life to be replanted back in Racine. These decisions destroyed my life. I lost my home and most of my belongings in my apartment due to additional decisions made by my family. I lost my job, my identity, my purpose, my independence and my freedom. I almost lost my will to live. Something about me had changed dramatically. Being well off with a good paying job with potential to climb the proverbial ladder of success, no longer seemed important to me. All I wanted was to go back home to Florida. I was literally starting over from nothing. I had very few of my possessions. I couldn't legally drive because of my condition. I had no way to make money. I relied on help and donations for several weeks until I could figure out my exit strategy.

In September, I began working full time with the same security company. This time, it was at the local hospital. I worked four-twelve hour days in a row for the next four months to save as much money as possible so I could go back home to Orlando. The plan was to transfer back to my former job at the airport and try to start my new life. I saved nearly $3500.00 in four months. All I owned was what I could fit inside my little car. On January 23, 2020, I left Racine and hit the road south back to Florida. I moved into a shoe box apartment and got my job back at the airport. I was immediately placed back as a full time employee and was welcomed back with open arms by many of my coworkers.

Then, a new manager showed up and began to change everything. Then, the covid began. The airport became a ghost town. Fear and mandates became the norm. Wearing masks was expected and enforced everywhere. Any prospects of me ever becoming a supervisor disappeared overnight. Everything I had fought so hard to get back to, was disappearing. I had to plan another exit strategy. I knew that my health was not going to be able to compete with all of the new mandates and restrictions being enforced by the airport and upper management. I knew that my days working as a security officer at the airport were numbered. For the sake of my health and well being, I had to get out. On August 23, I quit my job and left the airport. I went back to teaching music. I had eight weekly students. I had about $5000.00 in crypto investments as my financial backup plan should things go from bad to worse. By October, I had ten students. By November, I had twelve students. By February 2022, I had fifteen weekly students. The last time I had that many students per week was in 2016. Things were going well. Then, in early March, it all stopped.

It has been several weeks since I have started any new students. I have not had one inquiry, call or text in six weeks. I have lost one student from my roster, and I am about to lose two more. I have been struggling financially for two months. I have long since used all of my crypto investments and I am now in the negative in my checking account. The only cash I have is a couple of dollars in quarters in my car. I have no credit cards or credit card debt. I owe the IRS a little over $400.00 in taxes. My car needs an oil change. I am behind on my car insurance and my phone bill. My rent went up $50.00 in February. I am paying the most rent I have ever paid in my life, for the smallest, crappiest apartment I have ever lived in.

My simple life is slowly disappearing again, and I don't know what to do to fix it. I cannot and will not go back to the airport. I cannot work a 40 hour a week mind-numbing, tedious boring job. My health has changed in the past year. My medications are causing adverse side effects more often now, and I don't know why. I wish like hell I didn't have to take them, but they keep me alive. Going back to a job would probably put me back into the hospital. That is my one and only fear. I am doing everything I know how, to survive yet another life-altering struggle, but nothing seems to be working, and I don't know why.

All I want is to start four to six new students, immediately. Having that many new students would afford me the financial leverage to make it through the next several months. That is all that I ask. I just need a handful of new students. I love my simple life of peace. I want so badly to go to the beach and see the ocean. I want to walk in the sand and the tide. I want to watch bikinis and smell coconut oil. I want a simple life. I no longer believe that I will ever again be a wealthy man. Those days are long gone. All that is left for me is to live a life of abject poverty. I have nobody in my life for me. Most people don't even know or care whether or not I'm even alive.

My simple life is about me being awake all night long. I live with eyes wide open in the quiet of the silent sleeping masses. My simple life is one of absolutely solitude and anonymity. The only people who now know me, are the scattered individuals I see on those rare occasions when we make time for one another. The rest are my students, and the only thing they know about me is my struggle with my health and whether or not I'll show up at their next lesson.

My contentment is watching YouTube videos, eating microwaved burritos and drinking Diet Coke. I write these words as a form of mental therapy. Other than my guitar, writing is the only therapy that keeps me from snapping and losing what's left of my mind. I have lost so much in my life that I wonder why I even bother to keep anything. That's the beauty of a simple life. You can't lose something you never had. All I want is to live a simple life. No worries, no stress, no anxiety, no sadness, no chaos, no problems. I just require enough for what I need with a little left over for what I want.
