She went eerily silent. Lips pursed thin, her chin wobbling. “… Daniel.” She whimpered. “What would I have done if I lost you?”

His eyes widened. She never used his full name, only ever using it in moments where her vulnerability was laid bare. “Baby…” he brought his hands onto her shoulders, giving them a squeeze. “Ya aren’t losin’ me.”

“I almost did.” She wrapped her arms around herself, shaking her head. “You weren’t there when things got bad for us. When we were with Fugitoid. Leo hasn’t sounded like that in years, not since I pulled him out of the Prison Scape. He…” she shuddered. “He called you DAD.”

Danny squeezed her shoulders, his chest tight from the memory. “… yeah. I know.” He sullenly acknowledged. “I heard him.”

“And he was calling for his Dad, Daniel. He was calling for his dad and Hun almost KILLED you in front of him and I couldn’t do a fucking thing about it!” Katie finally snapped her head back to look at the yōkai with anguish. “What was I gonna do if he really killed you?! What if he killed Leo too?! I wouldn’t have been able to stop him! I would’ve heard two of the most important people in my life die because I wasn’t there to take those beatings!”

Danny almost couldn’t believe what he was hearing. Mouth agape as he fought to find words to convey his utter astonishment over this confession. “Kathrine…”

She took a staggering breath, dragging in air through clenched teeth. “It should’ve been me. It should’ve been me, not either of you. NONE of you. If Hun…” Katie closed her eyes squeezed shut as if to stave off the sheer idea of what might have been. “If he really did kill you two… I don’t know how I’d live with myself.”

The yōkai couldn’t find words. His mouth hung open, unable to speak. He couldn’t tear his eyes away from her. Kathrine was a lot of things— reckless. Headstrong. Stubborn and cocky. But she was also fierce, wildly ambitious, spontaneous and spirited. Beneath all this there was a woman with a brittle shell that would crack under the immense pressure she put herself through for the sake of the kids she took under her care. He understood her foggy mental state… but never knew she thought so badly of herself.

To see herself dead first over losing everyone… to watch her beat herself up over circumstances she couldn’t control. It was giving Hun what he wanted even in death; to see her crumble.

“Kathrine. Look at me.” Danny moved with ease, scooting around to better position himself to sit at her side. He cupped her face into his palm, raising her head to meet his gaze properly. “Ya know what kind of life I came from before I found you. Ya know I worked for Big Mama. Gettin’ th’ shit kicked outta me was just th’ norm. It was my job t’ get things done no matter how hard it got. She didn’t care about me, or Leonard and Mickey. I was a criminal living my day to day in a back alley apartment hoping th’ cops never caught me. I was a shallow bastard who couldn’t see what I was missing until you opened my eyes. I was… nothing.” He brushed his thumbs across her cheekbones, delicate to the touch. “You’re th’ first woman in my life that never treated me like I was expendable. I can handle gettin’ kicked and punched a couple times… but losin’ you?” He touched her forehead to his. “That’s a life I can’t live.”

Katie’s emerald orbs flashed with somber regret, lips still quivering. “Danny…” she whimpered, sounding on the verge of tears. “I’m nothing special.”

“You kidding?” He chuckled airily. “Outta all th’ women I’ve ever met, you’re th’ first who did th’ impossible.”

“Which was?”

Danny’s eyes turned affectionate. Golden eyes the color of starlight drank all of her in like priceless wine. Beautiful and alluring, a forbidden fruit no man could savor the taste of for long. She’d been burned before. She’d been hurt by men— and a woman— who used and threw her away. They didn’t get to see the core under the skin of what created her, the roots of her being that housed the very foundation of who Kathrine was.

An officer hellbound to her duty. A sister who missed her family. A mother who put her boys first.

A woman with a heart that hesitated when it came to love. But he’d been lucky to pull the curtain back, to see her, to catch a rare glimpse inside the mind of the human who helped set him free from a life of servitude.

And he voiced the truth to her plain as day. “Ya made me fall in love with you.”

Katie’s shoulders went rigid. It was as if she were fighting to keep everything at bay. The woman looked so stiff he worried she would start crumbling under the weight of all they’d been forced to deal with. Inching her hands around to return the hug she held him closer to her, leaning her head forward to better rest it against his neck. She took a deep breath, trying to steady her breathing. The staggering silence between them lasted ten minutes… maybe longer. He didn’t know. He wasn’t going to rush her.

He only held her close, continuing to press kisses into her hair, providing the love she’d been denied but eagerly craved. “I got ya,” he mumbled between kisses. “I got ya Kathrine. Just keep breathing. Deep breaths, doll. One… two… three… you got it.”

Katie’s fingers dug into the flimsy fabric of his shirt. He could feel moisture on his shoulder. “I love you,” came the soft whisper of the detective against him.

“I love you too,” he warmly replied, tilting her head up to look at him again. “No matter what I gotta deal with, I’m glad I stayed. No amount of money could change my mind.”

“How did you end up helping ME through a mental crisis after YOU got kidnapped? That’s not fair!”

“Hey, ya saved my ass tonight, I’d consider it even.”

Final Thoughts:

Seriously guys this is my favourite Final and First eps of a season. 

100% one of my favourite two parters, if not my all time favourite two parter

Great direction, good story, excellent bad guys, good acting, just enough suspense with out being too drawn out, something for everyone, comes of the back of a fun as fuck episode (1969), Hammond has a big part, Davis is there, lots of cute Sam/Jack and of course, Daniel’s Elf Hair. 

Also the Tok’ra are actually useful in this one which is SHOCKING

BAFTA 2020

British Academy of Film and Television Arts, anche conosciuti come gli oscar britannici, premiano annualmente le migliori produzioni cinematografiche al Royal Albert Hall di Londra. Quest’anno la cerimonia si svolta il 2 febbraio 2020 ed è stata presentata dal celebre conduttore tv e comico irlandese Graham Norton. Sul red carpet gran parte dello star system e del jet-set UK e non solo, accanto a star internazionali ed i duchi di Cambridge, Kate e William, presenti al primo evento mondano all’indomani dell’addio alla casa reale del Principe Harry e della definitiva rottura con l’Unione Europea.

Tutto sommato è stato un inizio 2020 piuttosto caldo per la politica britannica, una serata glamour ed ampi sorrisi non può certo stonare. I premi assegnati sono stati tantissimi, tanto per cominciare il premio per il contributo al cinema britannico, un riconoscimento alla carriera si può ben dire, è andato ad Andy Serkis, il primo seduto a sinistra nella foto di gruppo dei vincitori. Alcuni film si sono confermati un successo internazionale, ottenendo il secondo riconoscimento, dopo i Golden Globe di appena un mese fa.

Tra questi, a trionfare sicuramente 1917, di Sam Mendes, che si è aggiudicato ben 7 statuette, accostando ai premi già vinti ai Golden Globe, la maschera dei BAFTA 2020 per miglior regia e miglior film. La giuria britannica non si è limitata a considerarlo come il miglior film (dell’anno) ma ha scelto di ampliare il parterre di elogio premiandolo come miglior film britannico, per la fotografia, gli effetti speciali, il sonoro e la scenografia. Insomma, se non l’avete ancora visto, correte!

Il film evento del 2019, made in Corea, Parasite nonostante la candidatura come miglior regia e miglior film (dell’anno), si conferma anche a Londra come miglior film straniero ed aggiunge sulla mensola il premio per la migliore sceneggiatura originale.

E’ l’anno di Joker interpretato da Joaquin Phoenix come miglior attore, che nei suoi ringraziamenti ha fatto notare l’assenza di meritevoli colleghi di colore nella schiera dei nominati. Il villain della DC Comics aveva ottenuto 4 candidature ai Golden Globe vincendone 2 (miglior attore e miglior colonna sonora), gli stessi ottenuti anche a Londra, seppure le nominations fossero ben 10.

Altra conferma da Los Angeles per la miglior attrice: confermata Renée Zellweger anche dai cugini britannici. La sua interpretazione in Judy completerebbe la tripletta dei premi più prestigiosi al mondo con l’Oscar del 9 febbraio! Idem anche Laura Dern in Storia di un matrimonio e Brad Pitt in C’era una volta a… Hollywood per i ruoli da non protagonisti.

C’è delusione per l’ultimo film di Quentin Tarantino,  C’era una volta a… Hollywood, a Londra. Stessa sorte anche per Martin Scorsese che, nonostante le 10 nominations per The Irishman, torna a casa a mani vuote.

Torno a gioire per Klaus, il film d’animazione nuovamente vincitore! La produzione Netflix ha saputo dosare l’arte dell’animazione e la magia del Natale in un prodotto eccellente e meritevole di tanto prestigio. La conferma del successo anche al BAFTA 2020 è una riprova della crescita che il cinema spagnolo sta vivendo, grazie – e soprattutto #imho – alla presenza del colosso mondiale dello streaming.

La mia personale delusione è per Piccole Donne, l’adattamento e la regia di Greta Gerwig avrebbe certamente meritato molto più del solo premio al miglior costume. Kat and Dan’s

Kat and Dan’s Diner was one of my absolute favorite places to go. As one of the regulars, I was always welcomed to an extended stay, and I usually found myself scrawling down my latest story, hogging the whole booth with notes from interviews and research.

The best part was the staff hadn’t changed sense I’d moved to the sleepy little town. I was a freelance journalist, and sometimes covered dangerous stories. Oftentimes, in war-torn countries. This town, especially the diner, was a haven away from all of that.

I was struggling on my most recent scoop, and needed food. I went to my kitchen to scrape together something delicious, only to discover that I’d yet again neglected yo buy groceries. With a sigh, I closed the door, and grabbed my keys, heading out the door, when I decided to stop at Kat and Dan’s.

Dan, the owner, was behind the counter, wiping it down, alongside the usual busboy Nathan. He was the son of Mary-Anne, one of my favorite waitresses, and it was rare she wasn’t there. She was sweet, hard-working, and kind, there from open to near-close. Mary-Anne was working hard to set aside every penny she made for her kids to go to a good college, and make better lives for themselves. Nathan, her youngest and currently laden with dishes, was not pursuing college, but was heading towards freelance work. The kid ran a blog about small-town life, which didn’t have many followers, but the three thousand or so he did have was nothing to sneeze at. he wrote well.

When I arrived, Nathan nodded at me, unable to wave, and I took my seat at the counter, instead of a booth in the back. My usual booth was occupied by a small family. Something I envied the young man for…

Mary-Anne myst have caught my look. “There’s a pretty little thing that just left. Regular part of our late-lunch crowd.” Crowd was a minor understatement. Despite the good-natured staff, the well made food, and the cosy environment, most people didn’t come in during the week at all, and not many more on the weekends. 

“Oh, has she now?”

“Yes, left her wallet, so she’ll be back.”

“Mary-Anne, I’m thirty-five, I think I can pick my own ladies.” She laughed.

“I’m fifty, and I wouldn’t have minded a little push.” Mary Anne had been a single mother, raising six kids by herself. Her husband had been killed shortly before Nathan’s birth.Young and alone, she worked twice as hard as any other mother to raise her family and give her boys the best life they could.She was remarried now, but it had only been a year ago. 

“You know, Mary-Anne, I know about your family life, but what about your whole story?” I was inspired suddenly, as she laid down my usual in front of me. I nibbled on a fry. 

“And what do you want to know that for, Jake?” I debated the idea in my head for a moment.

“What got you started in the restaurant business? What brought you here to Westview? How did you raise six kids alone? A slow smile spread across her face. “What?”

“I know that look, Jacob Bell. You’re inspired to write, and you want to be about me.” I gave a sheepish grin.

“Is it that obvious?” She laughed loudly, and shook her head at me. 

“Honey, you couldn’t be any more obvious.” Dan walked by, heading to his office, and tipped his hat at me, muttering my name in greeting. 

“Well, you really want to know? I nodded, chewing on some more fries. I reached into my jacket pocket, and grabbed the small notebook and pen I kept there. She laughed, and shook her head.

“Let me get this order out, and refresh your soda.”  Mary-Anne turned to the kitchen, and called out another order, scooping up the food to the little family in the booth next to me. I realized they must have known I was coming if they’d set up my food before the others. Nathan came behind the counter with clean dishes this time, and started putting the classes where they went. “Hey Mr. Bell.” 

“Hey, kid, how goes it.” 

“Things are good. Took my girl to the prom.” Nathan was the quiet type, with few words and good ear for listening. 

“”Hey, baby, thanks for the cups.”

“Sure mom.” He smiled at her, and went back to putting his glasses away. Meanwhile, Mary-Anne got set up with rolling silverware in napkins. Nathan took the two salads to the young couple at the other table, and I said to her, “Good kid.” 

“I can’t believe my baby’s graduating this year, Jake.” As he was dropping the salads off, his girlfriend came in. His face lit up, and he sat with her for a few minutes. 

“They seem happy.”

“They are.” Mary Anne smiled as she worked at her napkins. Nathan went off, and soon came back with a milkshake for the two of them. I ate for a few moments, gathering my thoughts. 

“So, can I ask you questions?”

“What do you want to know? 

She was born on June 1, 1965. Mary-Anne was the youngest of two, and had an older brother named Danny. Her parents, on the other hand, were named Kathrine and Daniel. They owned the restaurant before her, working every day and making there kids lives fulfilling and well-rounded. Danny and Mary-Anne worked in the restaurant as well, and when her parents were too old, Danny and Mary-Anne decided to get together and purchase the restaurant. The restaurant was given a makeover and a new name, Kat and Dan’s, after their parents. Her parents had owned many restaurants through their lives, and were very successful, and had left extensive amounts of money to Mary-Anne and her brother. 

She’d made the decision while barely four months pregnant with Nathan, just after Gary, her first husband, had been killed. Dan’s wife had been, quite literally ,slapping him with a divorce. They pooled their inheritance and put it into making their restaurant run.  they ran ads in the papers, and soon after opening, their business soared, and she finally had the funds to take care of her kids. Danny was finally on his own two feet, and while things weren’t amazing, they were on the up. They worked different shifts, to prevent Mary-Anne spending so much time away from her boys. I scrawled her kids names in the margins of my notebook, just in case. They spent enough time at the restaurant, that her oldest, Dietrich, had gone off to culinary school, three went to business school, and one had become an interior designer to design restaurants. 

She started college funds for her kids, having finally been living in a state that allowed them such a luxury. Her two older boys had finally made it to college, and one night, the kitchen caught fire, and was completely destroyed. On top of that, business had declined as fast food restaurants moved in. Then the biggest news hit them hard.

“insurance didn’t cover the fire?!” I was incredulous. How couldn’t they.

As it turns out, arson would be a really good reason. And that arsonist was a disgruntled employee, who’d been fired for theft. A hefty loan was taken out to repair the damages, and because of the decline in business, the restaurant barely stayed afloat. Nathan had recently given back his college fund, in order to help pay ff their loans, and they paid him a paycheck. Mary-Anne worked so many long nights because they couldn’t afford another worker.Danny had not been hit so hard, as his home had been paid off as quickly as he could pay it off, and his second wife came from wealthy, so they stayed afloat. Not to mention, he only had two kids. 

I moved on to her love story, which made her blush. John, her husband now, is an old regular. He was one of the kindest people, and a neighbor of mine when I first moved to this town. It wasn’t long before he asked her on a couple dates, then they became serious. Her boys had a large hand in their proposal, and they were so excited for her when she said yes. And, just last year, they’d gotten married. John was about fifteen years older, and a widower himself, but he loved Mary-Anne and her kids. 

As if on queue, John had come in to pick his wife up, and smiled warmly at her from the seat next to mine. I nodded my greeting, my mouth full of food, and he grinned. Nathan came back, took more dishes to the back, and went off to sweep. 

I tidied up my notes, marriage dates, death date, and a few other informational pieces about the success of the rest of her kids, and went to work as soon as I was done with my food, and back in front of my computer.

I was able to get the story out to one of the many newspapers I worked for, and I even made sure to include a web address to Nathan’s blog. At once, it took off, and made him a wildly successful blogger, and he was able to save the money for a small-town wedding two years later to that girlfriend of his. He still shares milkshakes with her.

As for Mary-Anne and Danny, their restaurant went on the up and up as well. I was freelanced out for a food review article of their restaurant, and I raved about it endlessly. Their loans eventually were paid for, Nathan was given the money back from his loan. Nathan was also able to shower his parents with gifts he’d always dreamed of giving his mother, and his blog grew from the small-town life sort of blog, to a stay-at-home-dad type of blog. 

Me? the story itself dropped many new jobs in my lap, and I was able to generously top and make anonymous donations to their restaurant as I could. After all, all I had done was tell Mary-Anne’s story.

She had lived it.
