The Greatest Night of the Jazz Age
Last Sunday, @ginges-stuff and I attended the matinee of the show. It was a fantastic experience.
The venue is built as a 1930s New York nightclub and offers an authentic atmosphere. There are three stages (one with the band next to the entrance, one in the middle and one behind the bar at the back of the room), several round tables on the floor and additional seating at a little higher pedestal on two sides. We sat at a table with high chairs at the side and had a great view from there.
The show started at 1 pm with Miss Belle Livingstone (Suanne Braun) welcoming everyone and promising the greatest night of jazz, ever. She wore a red dress that flattered her figure and gave the impression of a woman who knows the ins and outs of running a speakeasy. Always a saucy quip on her lips, she worked the room and made sure everyone was having a good time.
Belle and Valaida (the resident singer) took turns exciting the audience with their amazing voices. They were accompanied by four dancers (the spirits) and a fabulous band. Through music, song, and dancing, we learned the story of Belle’s life, her past, her hopes and dreams.
Besides the main attraction, there was another show that was hidden from the obvious eye: the choreography of the waiters and waitresses. Well attuned, they ensured everyone got their drinks and their food in the allotted time windows. However, serving drinks didn't always work out the way it should have. Drinks could be ordered with your phone scanning a barcode that included your table number. Somehow the app changed the table number or used a default because several times, we were asked if we had ordered the cocktail/champagne/wine. If we had been any lesser human beings, we would have said “yes” and gotten free drinks which someone else had paid for.
The three-course-menu was excellent and delicious.
At one point when @ginges-stuff and I were talking about the upcoming Fedcon event and fangirling over Amanda (as usual), Miss Belle came up to us and asked us if we had a good time. We were so surprised by her sudden presence that we could only affirm with a simple, “Yes, we have a great time.” Then, she winked at us and was gone again. And we missed the opportunity to say something funny. The entire day, one quick-witted sentence was stuck in my head, “Miss Belle, you are looking stunning, as stunning as an Egyptian goddess.” I missed my chance, which in retrospect is probably for the best.
At the end of the show, tension built up once again when the police raided the place and caught Miss Belle with a bottle of alcohol. But she didn't stay in prison long, because there was a party to celebrate.
The three hours flew by, and we left the place with a feeling of “Yes, indeed, we had the Greatest Night of the Jazz Age.”
If you have a chance to catch a show with Suanne, do it. The experience is well worth your time and your money.

The Princess Switch (2018, Mike Rohl)
18/12/2023
The Princess Switch is a 2018 Christmas-themed romantic comedy film directed by Mike Rohl, inspired by a screenplay by Robin Bernheim and Megan Metzger. The main actors of the film are Vanessa Hudgens and Sam Palladio.
The film was released on Netflix 16, 2018 exclusively on Netflix.
Having gone to the back of the pastry competition studios to try to remove stains from her apron, Stacy clashes with Lady Margaret of the kingdom of Montenaro, Duchess and future wife of Prince Edward of Belgravia.
The Duchess and Stacy are perfectly identical, probably thanks to a distant family bond that binds them and, at the request of the future princess, tired of the rigid etiquette that she is forced to follow and completely unaware of what it would be like to live a normal life, the two girls exchange identities for a couple of days, and then return to their respective lives.
In June 2018, it was announced that Vanessa Hudgens and Sam Palladio would star in the Netflix film The Princess Switch.
Most of the film was shot in Romania.
The sequel The Princess Switch: Switched Again was released in 2020 and in 2021 The Princess Switch 3: Romancing the Star.

Thinking back to Starhyke, and how Dotty essentially has a longer lifespan compared the rest of her crew (thanks to Striker’s comment in that one episode), which means at some point she’ll have no choice but to watch each of her crew mates (her family, really) pass on one by one. Which is pretty heartbreaking, to say the least. 😔
#I know she gets left behind in the last episode but I head-cannon Redge actually manages to save the day and rescues both her AND Sally#I just hope Dotty’s life-span isn’t TOO long so she doesn’t have to live without her crew for a long time#Poor thing is underrated and deserves all the love she can get#Sally too for that matter#Both of them were practically ABUSED throughout the series#Suanne Braun#Dotty#Starhyke

Stargate rewatch: 1x13 Hathor
An episode Jonathan Glassner is on the record as regretting - an attempt to up the sexy quotient to please the studio.
Fingertips over the sarcophagus a nice parallel to Ra in the movie.
I guess Hathor popped over to Europe to get herself a host huh 🤨
“Since I was the only one to ever do research in cross-pollenisation of ancient cultures, they tracked me down.” I have several problems with this - first Daniel works on a top secret military project and was likely declared dead, he can be tracked down by academics? Second, the incredulity of no one in the SG universe researching cross-cultural myths, and that such theories would be laughable. Third, the other archeologists have this paradigm-shifting artefact and just send it to some dude rather than study it themselves, and forth, that the Mexican government let them, even though the thing is solid gold?
I like the framing of this shot and the symmetry of the Gate and sarcophagus.
Jack: “It’s like that thing on Ra’s spaceship-” Daniel: “That brought Sha’re and I back from the dead.” I mean I like it when they mention movie events, but technically Jack never saw the sarcophagus. I guess things played out slightly differently in showverse.
Sam gets a shoulder pat and is not happy about it, because it's a patronising shoulder pat, not the shoulder pat of comfort.
She also does research on 90’s era internet in what looks like Janet’s office - this was before Sam and Daniel had their own labs.
"I just can't figure out how to be one of the guys with these guys you know? I always feel like I’m The Girl.” Ironic that this is said in an episode where it’s all about her being The Girl. Other than CotG and Emancipation, I’m not sure we see Sam treated as anything other than one of the team? The narrative treats Sam as The Girl, but the characters generally don’t.
I think the main struggle of this episode is that it veers so close to camp, but is played so sinister there’s a tonal dissonance that can’t quite be reconciled.
We want to have fun with Hathor, she’s glam and arch and should be fun! But there’s no fun in this storyline.
I mean this is an episode where Daniel is raped and Jack is assaulted, not exactly family friendly fare.
Daniel is dosed twice to fall under Hathor’s thrall, then when he finds out she wants to use him to spawn Goa’uld larvae he tries to stop her and is dosed again, and it’s so uncomfortable to watch.
And it’s meant to be uncomfortable, villain does villainous things is not something I have a problem with. And on some level the show does convey the gravity of this - the next time we see Daniel he’s in a dissociative state - but then it glosses over the trauma.
Because something like this is pertinent to Daniel’s character in particular, being powerless under the hold of a Goa’uld gives him a glimpse into what Sha’re is suffering and would only make him more determined to find her, but it’s never addressed.
Look I know Daniel sometimes gets grief for being “my wife” all the time, but he should mention her all the time? Especially when it’s relevant to what’s happening to him.
Maybe I’m just expecting too much from a tv show, but codas are often my favourite part of an episode, especially when there’s a need to deal with the aftermath of the episode’s events. Perhaps that’s more for fanfic than broadcast media, but I do feel that if a show is going to present something like this, there needs to be more than “ew” at the end.
Suanne Braun, however, is an absolute delight. Check out Hathor Hosts on Youtube.
Rumor has it Sharon Stone, who in the late 80’s was married to executive producer Michael Greenberg, was tapped to play Hathor at one point. Grain of salt.
5 women on the whole base? No female scientists at work that day I guess.
I mean, I know this episode was well intentioned in an attempt to give some focus and hero moments for Sam and Janet, but it really has Men Writing Women vibes.
With this setup Hathor really should have been more of a recurring villain because the concept behind Goa’uld queens is interesting, she is genuinely menacing, and the team have a personal beef with her.
Page Dr Mackenzie, they all need to boatloads of therapy. It’s Stargate: PTSD at this point.

Stargate SG1 S1E14: Hathor
Fucking Hathor!
Look, Suanne Braun is super pretty (like god damn!) , so I'll never be able to completely hate this episode, but it's a bad episode. Easily the second worst after Emancipation. Maybe the idea of a goa'uld abandoned on earth during the rebellion could be recycled into a better episode or as part of a season arc, but no sex pheromones, no trying to create new jaffa, none of that stupid shit. You can keep the extremely pretty redhead though.
Maybe set up an Earth based enemy faction of goa'uld. Maybe setup Hathor (or Ba'al, or Osiris, or all of them in a legion of doom) as a magnificent bastard who you can't trust but still have to work with when the first alien ships show up in orbit.

Believe it or not, I actually head-canon that Mrs. Donatelli from Princess Switch and Elaine Marks from A Royal Winter are twins, but don’t see each other much due to living in different countries. XD
#Yes I know one movie is from Netflix and the other from Hallmark but it could happen!#Plus if Margaret can have a twin (more of a doppelgänger really) then ‘Telli can have a twin XD#Not to mention the movies only came out a year apart from one another and Netflix could’ve very well gotten inspiration from A Royal Winter#They even got Suanne Braun for Pete’s sake! XD#Elaine was the original Donatelli for sure and was simply the “pilot version” before getting moved up XD#mrs. donatelli#Elaine Marks#the princess switch#A Royal Winter

GABIT INSP 2022 Part II - Q&A session #2
The 2nd Q&A session started with Suanne and Amanda after the lunch break.
Suanne had a question about what GABIT meant, and the explanation touched her. She marveled at the love and dedication to get Amanda back together with her fans, praised the wonderful atmosphere and mentioned the fun she had being here.
At some point, Amanda mentioned that “most of her ass had moved to her face.”
They drew the winner of the “Tea with...” raffle.
After that, they said they cherished their friendship and that they (and we) have to support each other, especially older women, because they easily become invisible in show business and in life. Amanda pointed out she liked the term “elderly” more because it holds more grace than the word “old”. Old woman or old person sounds like someone has reached their expiry date.
In the same breath, Amanda talked about inclusive vs diverse. She used a swimming pool analogy.
inclusive -> a swimming pool where everyone can get in and mingle without restrictions
diverse -> a swimming pool where everyone can get it, but please stay in your corner and do not disturb the others
She encouraged us to use the term inclusive.
Next, Amanda was informed that a dedicated fanfiction writer had already turned her encounter with Naked Attraction into a fic “Jack’s Nightmare - aka Naked Attracttion”. She doubled over in laughter as did the audience.
Someone asked a question about Don S. Davis. Both noted that he was a nice and kind person with an artistic talent. And that once, he came to the makeup trailer and farted. He was subsequently banned from there.
Another question about their favorite movies was raised. Amanda said Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and Jojo Rabbit, while Suanne mentioned Harry & Sally and some others.
Amanda’s new favorite catchphrase was “My hardrive is full.” She had heard it in a program of a female comedian. Especially during the Covid lockdown with its endless zoom meetings it came in handy.
Suanne did her famous “My cousin Vinnie” routine/imitation and made us laugh.
Someone asked Suanne how the idea for Hathor Hosts came about. She said most jobs were canceled during the first lockdown and she was stuck at home like everyone else. She bounced the ideas off with the people around her and decided to give it a try. She called her friends and contacts, like Amanda, and everyone was like, “Sure, let’s do it.” At the beginning, they had a lot of technical difficulties, and it was a learning curve. The best part was researching the guests, to find some interesting tidbits from their past. She’s grateful of how well it was received. “Without you, the fans, it wouldn’t have been such a success.”
Someone asked about any developments for a new Sanctuary series as there were some rumors two years ago. Amanda explained that someone had bought the IP and told us the story about a press release ending up on her desk which "cheesed her off”. (a press release which never saw the day of light) It said that a new Sanctuary series was in development with Amanda Tapping as director and a younger actress playing Helen Magnus. “How can a younger actress play Helen? She’s mine. I created her. Okay, Damien and Martin developed her but I filled her with life.” So, she called Damien and Martin to discuss the matter. And she called her agency to stop the release. In the end, a different version was published on Deadline. Amanda would never ever agree to a new Sanctuary series where she wouldn’t play Helen. She’s very protective of the character.
At long last, Amanda thanked Suanne for being here, and they hugged.

What absolutely gorgeous and lovely women!! What a fab weekend!! Just over £35,000 raised for Hearing Dogs and Nepal Orphans’ Home. It may have been the last GABIT but it won’t be the last time we all see each other, I know it.
Also loved Amanda talking about inclusion and wearing clothing from a company that specialises in genderless/queer/lgbt themed clothing!! (Bottom two photos)
