Some thoughts and theories I'd like to share about DGM (Spoilers!)

JUST A FAIR WARNING: THERE ARE TONS OF SPOILERS HERE!!

So I just got into contact with my friend who was busy and aboard and we talked about dgm, about the recent chapter (253) and a few other theories that are floating around in the fandom and, after a few exchange we both conjured up some questions, thoughts and theories:

Is Allen the Dog's name a coincidence? Was Mana even aware of Allen Sr.'s existence? What was Katerina's relationship with Adam? Was it friendship or something more? And who TF is Cyrus exactly? When exactly did Nea met Allen Sr.? Was it before or after his betrayal? How exactly did Lavi Sr. and Allen Sr. met? Were they introduced to each other by Nea?

All these questions, we tried to figure some of them out, one by one! So, let's start with Allen the Dog and the name.

So originally, some of us figured that Lavi Sr. (previously known as Past Allen... 😅) to have met and was even friends with Mana, and that in his confusion and grief, Mana named the dog (his only companion before our Allen) Allen! It made sense, but then 252 and 253 released and we had to go back to serval chapters before. My friend and I thought that, perhaps, Nea might have told Mana of his host being named Allen but then it doesn't make sense for Mana to name the dog Allen. My friend thought that with Mana's personality and deteriorating sanity, might've have been touched... in some way or another that Allen Sr. is willing to become his brother's host and disappear! So, in honor of this unknown man, Mana named the dog Allen. It made sense, but who knows?

Now, to the Campbells! We know that Katerina met Adam, and became close enough with him to mourn and cry when Adam dies/splits and even took in the twins that is essentially, his sons. Katerina is portrayed to be a very loving mother who nursed Mana back to health. Katerina's name means "purity" while her middle name Eve...is already a hint itself to her possible relationship with Adam.

Now let's go to Cyrus whose face we don't even know and is only mentioned like once. Let's first start with his name, because I found it interesting. Now Cyrus is a fairly popular given name and the name of several Persian kings, particularly Cyrus the Great (c. 600–530 BC), but also Cyrus I of Anshan (c. 650 BC), King of Persia and the grandfather of Cyrus the Great, and Cyrus the Younger (died 401 BC), brother to the Persian king Artaxerxes II of Persia. Cyrus, as a word in English, is the Latinized form of the Greek Κῦρος, Kȳros, from Old Persian 𐎤𐎢𐎽𐎢𐏁 Kūruš. Now the meaning of the name Cyrus has been and continues to be a topic of discussion amongst historians, linguists, and Iranologist. The Old Persian name "kuruš" has been interpreted in various forms such as "the Sun", "like Sun", "young", "hero," and "humiliator of the enemy in verbal contest" and the Elamite "kuraš" has been translated as one "who bestows care". Interesting right?

So, the thing is me and my friend came up with one, fairly ridiculous but likely plausible theory: Cyrus could be Cross' father. Idk why, but it's what we came up with, now, we do have the theory somewhere that Cyrus = Cross but it's rather unlikely. @allen-fanfan theorized that Cyrus may be the elderly people mentioned in ch. 137, which is, again a highly plausible theory than anything proposed (so far at least). We do know that Cyrus is apparently a very weird and eccentric individual, but I am curious about the fact that Nea mentions how Cyrus is "where the strangely colored smoke". But this is all I have sooo 🤷

Now, let's get into our next topic. Which is Nea, Allen Sr. and Lavi Sr.! Now, I'll have to say that this is somewhat connected to the Allen the Dog theory I mentioned above, but I'll first explain me and my friend's thoughts about these three central figures: Now, Nea and Allen Sr first met when Allen Sr was dying after his entire squad all died, the first question was how exactly did they die? And which military did Allen Sr came from? What war were they fighting? Timeline is important but considering how we were given no dates and only an approx. timeline, ehh... My friend very quickly abandoned the entire "what war?" question. I don't blame her tbh, since the question is somewhat unimportant since we get an indirect confirmation that Allen Sr is likely an ordinary soldier. Anyways, regarding Nea and Allen Sr's meeting, I did post a question whether Allen's wish was to die by his own terms, since, he is...a soldier and all that.

But, the most important question that I do wanna ask is when exactly did our Noah and dearest Allen met? Was it before the betrayal or after? If before, there's this possibility of Nea telling Mana of his willing host, thus the entire theory above this section. But if it's after the betrayal then, well, it would explain why Nea and Allen Sr didn't seem to know each other well despite Nea's apparent attachment but then again according to Lavi Sr, Nea is the kind of person who has trouble admitting he is friends with someone, but still cares for them deeply. So, who knows, he could've gotten attached despite their short-lived time spent together.

Here's my final question asked; when and how exactly did Lavi Sr and Allen Sr met? When is important, because timeline, again is important, timeline would help us better understand the story and it would give us some context on how long our dear characters have known/spent time together. As for the how, it could be a possibility that Nea might have introduced them to each other or Nea might have told Lavi Sr, but then again, how would Lavi Sr know where/who Allen is? If Nea and Allen Sr. ever separated that is, but it wouldn't make sense since it'd be like "hey so you'll carry my memories so that I can reincarnate and erase your existence once I wake up goodbye!" like. That would be so weird and awkward, so me and my friend went to an assumption that Nea likely spent some time with Allen Sr. although it was very brief until Lavi Sr and Allen Sr met. But who knows,idk me and my friend were just bullshitting and speculating about all these things sooo 🤷

oh, now I remember why I stopped reading d.gray-man at volume 14.

EDIT; Actually, I'm going to elaborate on this, feel free to revoke your likes if you disagree.

D.gray-man fan "theories", especially the ones popular on the subreddit, drive me up the wall, some of them are in direct contradiction to the themes of the series, or came about because people only read fan translations/don't even read the official properly (here I acknowledge that Viz isn't helping by translating the names shittily, and yes I mean travesties like "Waiizurii".)

The most egregious one being the "Allen is a grown adult who got de-aged" thing, because literally the only persons word we have to go on is Nea's, and the fact that like 90% of the fandom choose to believe him is absolutely insane. Is it because he's popular for some odd reason? That's weird to me because, as a Sheril stan, I wouldn't believe a goddamn word Sheril says. Why do Nea's fans believe him?

Next, while at first I was skeptical of the idea, I now really really really hope Grave Of Maria actually IS Katerina Eve Campbell, because I hate "Road is Katerina" even more as a plot point.

And speaking of Road, I will be livid if "Road isn't a physical entity as we see her, but a dream being projected by someone sleeping somewhere" actually comes true. Road has done WAY TOO MUCH in the plot to not be a 100% real physical entity of her own, from the eye stabbing to the kissing to the action rescue, and her interactions with the other Noah, I will literally be so fucking angry about this one.

Summary: On the night of Mana's failed resurrection, it isn't Cross Marian who finds Allen, but Katerina Campbell. She is too late to save her son, but she's just in time to protect her grandchild.

Katerina’s back hurts, and she wishes she could take another pain killer, but she has long since learned that an overdosage won’t do her well. The medication doesn’t fog her brain – she’s a Campbell, she knows her chemistry – but it loses its effect too quickly. She can endure this pain now, stay strong for the child that needs her help.

Allen has stopped screaming, exhausted himself from it and now sleeps soundly for one. His body must be too tired to conjure up any nightmares.

His hair is white now and the parasitic Innocence will keep him from needing glasses.

Katerina has no proof that this child Mana picked up is in fact the very same young man who’d been so dedicated to helping her sons, but it doesn’t matter either way.

He is Mana’s son.

Katerina had buried Nea and she had buried Mana, certain that she wouldn’t see either of her children again after the Earl had claimed them so thoroughly, left her lying broken beneath Cornelia, damned to never stand on her own two feet again.

(Magician that she was, Katerina had thought of various treatments, but none would be worth the cost. What wouldn’t she give for Desires to lend her their strings.)

But there Mana had been again, older, but human again, kind and gentle with this child of hers. Had Katerina been only a few days quicker in tracking them down, minutes earlier in finding little Allen at Mana’s grave—

She has to stop considering the what-ifs, Katerina has a child to care for.

A poor, hurt boy, who was her grandchild.

Katerina moves her wheelchair closer to his bedside, thinking of how to help him heal and understand this world he’s been thrust into so ruthlessly. She has lost too much and too many to let Allen disappear into the dark.

Do you believe in the "Road is Katerina" theory? Personally I don't... It just, doesn't click well?

Tbh I also don't think the same way, in fact I have a whole ass argument up on my sleeves on why the theory just straight up confuses me. My friend also agrees with me and kinda brought up some things about it as well.

Considering how the theory seemed to be somewhat popular and resolute with others, I will just say that the first time I read it. I fucking hated it and I'm (not) sorry about it. If you guys have some things to say to me about it then click off this post since this entire post is about why this theory does not make sense and why people like me don't like it that much.

Here's the reasons why I do not agree to the "Road is Katerina" theory:

1. Character Contradiction:

The most obvious and prominent one that I placed focused on, Road and Katerina have distinct, well-established personalities and roles throughout the series. And while Katerina barely appeared, her very few appearances actually gave us a good grasp of her character that obviously contradicts Road. Road has been portrayed as a playful yet dangerous character with a very complex relationship and backstory, we don't know much about her but her character reveals so far much of her playful and erratic personality who also cares deeply for her family, in spite of her sadism. Katerina, on the other hand, seemed more reserved and and relatively different kind of character, both in terms of demeanor and emotional connections. The personalities don't align well, and forcing them to be the same person feels like a disservice...

2. Narrative Consistency:

There’s no substantial narrative or hint in the story that supports that Road is secretly Katerina/Katerina is Road's body. As far as I am concerned, Road does care deeply for Mana and Nea and so does Katerina but that's it. Also the close relationship with Road and Earl is actually something that I may have an idea about (I promise guys I'll make a separate post about this). If Katerina were Road in disguise, it would undermine the carefully crafted tension and mystery around Road's motives and identity. The reveal would feel abrupt and out of place without any buildup or subtle foreshadowing. If anything, I support that Road's real body is in the Campbell Residence but I don't think that she and Katerina are the same.

3. Unclear Motivations:

Road is motivated by loyalty to Earl and her family and is willing to embrace destruction for their sake, while Katerina's are entirely unknown and so far have not been revealed. If they were the same person, it would be hard to reconcile these differing motivations and character drives, especially since Katerina has been shown zero hints of any hidden agenda, which is a stark contrast to Road.

4. Emotional Disconnect:

Ok first of all, I agree that Yes! Road cares deeply for Mana and Nea and that Katerina does as well (she's literally their mom guys). But, the bond between them feels... Different, at least to me. Katerina has this motherly affection and love for Mana and Nea, and her relationship with Adam is close yet it does remains a mystery (avid believer that they were very very close). Road also love Mana and Nea but her relationship with them felt different, idk how to put into words but her familial love for them feels different but they're family so that's all I'm gonna say. The theory would make Katerina’s feelings for Adam difficult to explain if she were secretly Road and vise verse. The emotional investment and connections wouldn't make sense if the character were hiding such a major secret.

5. Logical Issues:

From a purely logistical standpoint, the theory heavily leans on speculation and identical relationships three key characters (Adam, Mana and Nea). How could Katerina possibly be Road when we know absolutely very little of her? The distinct differences in mannerisms, and background makes it incredibly hard for me to believe the theory. Plus, Katerina’s interactions with other characters — like with Adam, Mana and Nea, and even her possible connection with Cross (Dgm ch. 245) — would be inconsistent if she were Road.

And finally my last reason is that — Hoshino's writing. Listen, there's so many things that I love about Dgm. like from the art-style, storyline, gut-wreaching backstories and also Allen 💖💕. But I would absolutely be livid if Katerina and Road turned out to be the same person.

To summarize, as you said: it doesn't click well (AKA does not make logistical sense to you). I don't agree with the theory because it feels like a forced connection that doesn’t line up with the characters' established identities and motivations. The personalities are different, the narrative doesn’t hint at such a twist, and the emotional stakes would fall apart. It doesn’t mesh with the world-building or the relationships we've seen so far.

This post should provide a solid basis on why the theory doesn't resonate with you. And honestly guys, you can believe whatever you want but some people just don't really like/understand it so...

I keep thinking about the family relations in D.Gray-Man.. And my theory at this moment is this: I wonder if ‘'past! Allen’’ is the Millenium-earl's and Katerina's son or something. 

Age

Age-wise i think it works since Nea has said before that Allen has ‘’become younger’’ since Nea is supposed to be like 17-ish when he died, doesn’t that mean that Allen is supposed to be older? It could be that the earl split when pasta! was a child maybe he helped raise/teach the twins alongside Katerina. Also being born in this family may be brought some abilities with him like the whole score writing thing.

Allen’s song

Maybe pasta was a gifted musician, and was the one that taught the Campbell twins everything. If he WAS their son, it seems fitting that the family (including Katerina) know everything about the situation (noahs, exorcists, the holy war). What if Allen taught them and they started showing signs of their past life. (being the OG earl).

Maybe when the earl split into two babies (the reason why is unclear) pasta! helped them as their teacher/friend, helping them alongside Katerina. Then maybe when shit hit the fan and Earl/Mana killed Nea. apochrypos was there too and gave him the innocence,(remember his line: you’ve become a beautiful exorcist, Allen?), i think he’s the one that implemented the innocence in his arm, and when the rest of them died/went insane. He woke up one day as a 5-year-old in Edinburgh....without memories.

I wonder when Apocryphos did implement the innocence if he knew about Nea's memories?

Okay, so, what if Road's real body is actually Katerina's?

It would explain why she cares so much about Mana and (probably) Nea, why she goes by her Noah name and why Cross told Allen to find Katerina at the mansion because she knows the truth. Hoshino told us that Road knows basically everything.
