VI.5 Transmuting Animalism into Humanity Teaching Objective: Correct use of the organs of sight, hearing and speech

Man has to cleanse himself of all the animal traits and passions, and manifest his humanness first, before further advancing unto divinity. He has to cleanse his emotions, impulses, attitudes, and reactions. He has to constantly examine his own mind, his own thoughts, and not seek the fault-ridden person. Rather, he has to seek only purity and speak ill of none. Neither he has to humiliate anyone nor disrespect anyone. Rather, he must respect others for the goodness in them.  

The great Lord has said in the Bhagvad_Gita – “Speech, that does not offend, that is truthful, pleasant and beneficial, has to be praised”.  Such speech sanctifies the tongue. It knows and respects the limits. The ear cannot tolerate a false or discordant note. Every one of the senses responds within its own limits of tolerance and protests when these limits are exceeded or disregarded. 

Man, must, therefore, be ever vigilant that they are put to use with proper attention to these limits. When they stray from the path or overstep the boundaries, reason bites its head and makes him inhuman! Suppose someone insults us; what will we lose by his insult? We should not respond to such insults with any agitation/excitement. If we remain peaceful, all the anger of the other person may freely pour out. But, if we try to obstruct his strong feelings by preventing him from venting his anger, it could possibly lead to a dangerous situation. 

The same thing applies whenever a person is very angry and is vomiting out his poison in that form. Let him do it without obstructing him. Whatever he want to say, let him say it as long he wants to.  Until such time as it all comes out, we should remain peaceful and patient. Why should we be subject to disturbance/ excitement? Instead of getting upset, our patient attitude will actually promote the feelings of peace and happiness within us. This itself is the experience of heaven; why should we deny ourselves the joy of such heavenly feelings? The quality of patience is the most important quality. Of all the good qualities a person can have, patience and forbearance rank at the very top. Forbearance is truth, forbearance is righteousness, forbearance is non-violence, and forbearance is happiness. Forbearance is really equal in value to everything that we can find in all the worlds. 

We must understand the fact that no object per se is joy giving. It is we who find it so; the joy is actually in us. We pour it on the object and ascribe it to the object, by the trick of projection. If an object is capable of giving joy, it must be welcomed by all at all times and all places. But, this is not the case as far as any object is concerned; the joy is only projected on it by our mind. 

Real joy lies in giving joy to others; that way, we will ever be joyful. Duty is God; Work is worship; and, there is a dictum – “head in the forest; hands in society”; we must, therefore, do deeds that are holy and beneficial, untainted by ego and the greed to profit; we must make every minute of our life holy and purposeful. Then surely, this earth, our field/area of work, will be transformed into a ‘Karmakshetra’ (field/area of dedicated action) and a ‘Dharmakshetra’ (field/area of utmost righteousness).
