Gli Helheim sono forse la black metal band norvegese più rimasta in ombra, considerando che il debut è del 1995 e che hanno sfornato 11 album. La loro carriera non è però stata semplice; i primi due album, di culto, non godevano di buona distrubuzione e già da Blod & Ild i nostri si sono buttate su influenze death, su un black metal più brutale, digitale e via via sempre più dissonante. Questo lungo e poco fortunato processo metamorfico li ha praticamente spostati completamente dal folk, dal viking e da un certo tipo di epica. Il riscatto della band avviene circa al terzo cambio di logo, nel 2011 con Heiðindómr ok mótgang, anche se questo album è ancora molto incerto; è un disco progressive black metal, un po’ come fecero gli Enslaved con Mardraum e Monumension.

Il vero passo in avanti verso la riappropriazione di certi temi e sonorità avviene nel 2015 con raunijaR. Chitarre acurtiche, cori norreni, corni, tamburi. Tutto il tribalismo e lo sciamanesimo che ci si aspetta da una band che da questo momento in poi diventerà forse la migliore per quanto riguarda l’unione fra black metal e sonorità scandinave. Dopo l’intro, che ci cala perfettamente all’interno di una baia (vik) norvegese con canti e preparazioni, gli Helheim partono per la guerra con il brano raunjiaR. Black metal corposo, melodico, dai lunghi riff (un po’ in stile the Shadowthrone). Synth, urla e corni, portano il climax piano piano sempre in modalità crescente. Le successive due tracce, "Åsgards Fall III e IV continuano un concept iniziato nel 2010 quando le sonorità della battaglia in oggetto erano molto più violente e belligeranti. Ora, a livello evocativo siamo alla caduta degli dèi; impossibile non pensare ad Hammerheart e a Twilight of the Gods: i cori accompagnano le lente chitarre nella narrazione di una guerra persa sulla terra ma vinta per entrare nel Valhalla. Le chitarre sono limpide, precise, e quando i brani prendono tonalità più oscure, si può quasi ascoltare l’eco dei Gorgoroth e dei Taake (nella seconda parte della propria vita gli Helheim si sono sempre più legati alla band di Høst). In questi due capitoli, perfettamente legati l’uno all’altro si sente come una band folk-viking possa diventare progressiva senza abbracciare il lato psichedelico che invece hanno preferito i cugini Enslaved. Anche la lunga conclusiva "Ord", con i continui duetti fra chitarre in ovedrive + chitarre acustiche e urla + cori descrivono un mondo del passato davvero affascinante. Gli Helheim si scoprono gli unici narratori autorevoli di una storia lontana che vede da sempre ondate di guerrieri andati e venuti, ai quali bisogna tessere lodi e dedicare storie.

A FUNERAL ENDING WITH BEYONCE

for Tracie and Aryanna  

When Tracie shows us her bloated

pointer finger, there is no ponderosa near so I

knock my chest until redness comes down

the palm and God sends me every animal

to pray with. She thinks she’ll die this time,

from the cat’s bite. The infection is spreading

to the shoulder, though it is only the finger

that shows her sickness, fat and tan as 

the belly of a roadrunner. Tracie decides Aryanna

and I should emcee her funeral: It will be in 

New Mexico under the watchful eyes of ponderosa

pines who’ll coat her casket with the scent

of vanilla. Frybread is to be waiting on every

chair and I imagine my mother there holding

my speech so the grease from the bread doesn’t

bleed through the index cards. She’ll remind me

that when her father died, everyone forgot

he was struck by lightning as a young man.

I’ll forget to tell her I’ve been recording 

our conversations so I can carry her

voice miles away from where she sleeps.

I stiffen at the thought of her death and knock

on the ponderosa, its bark redder than the amputated

finger Tracie made us promise to put in the pocket

of her dress—a lonely fire extinguisher that created

the fire. The mourners finish their bread and I jump

in the casket with her. Aryanna shakes 

her head as she turns on the stereo to play

“I Was Here.” Who would the living be

without the dead in the ground?
