You are in the right place! Your eyes do not deceive you! We’re actually talking about spy romances this week and no Sarahs were harmed during the discussion, but that’s probably because it was a discussion with one of her favorite people, the fantastic Nana Malone!
We talk about Nana’s immense career, about how she took matters into her own hands and started making the covers she wished to see in the world, about her Brown Nipple reading challenge, about her latest book, a Kobo original, The Spy in 3B, and about porny ferris wheels. Real ordinary stuff. We also get to the bottom of why Sarah doesn’t like spy romances generally, but why she can’t get enough of Mr. & Mrs. Smith retellings.
S03.41: Spy Romance Interstitial with Nana Malone
RELEASED: June 2, 2021

I lied.
I read 4 more pages out of morbid curiosity.
Can anybody tell me what a paysun is? Because I'm so afraid she might have meant paisano (local man in Spanish) and I'm 💀.
I really can't with these cursive words that sometimes are in Spanish or Basque, randomly. I don't get what's the point. Also this term - meaning whore from "ema" woman + "galdu" lost - was dated even for 1937 standards.
Now, book closed for good.
Conclusion: don't read this shit.
I was at the airport recently and I found this book at one of the stores and instantly needed to know your reactions!
Kaixo!!
I had to download it to give an opinion, but sadly I could only read the first chapter.
This book is dreadful.
The Pyrenees are miles away from Gernika. And that was page 1.
Turrón is a sweet sold and eaten during Christmas, certainly not in April when the story takes place ffs. Also mama instead of Basque ama.
However grandma is called amona Elisabeta. In Gernika it's said amama, not amona, and Elisabeta doesn't exist: the Basque version of Elisabeth is ElisabetE.
Mouchous is FRENCH spelling for muxus (kisses) and are a sweet specialty of a certain bakery from Iparralde. Not traditional and not invented by 1937, wtf is this book!
Aguire with a single R. Even if most English speakers can't roll their Rs, that's AguiRRe ma'am.
No, honey, Basque women don't lose their surnames for their husband's.
The... The cradle? Has the author found out where Basque people come from??? Also, our democracy??? The Council was for noble people, faaaaaaaar away from democracy as we understand it nowadays.
Republican soldiers, okay, no mention to Basque soldiers - gudariak - because the author heard war sides were Republicans vs Nationalists and that's it.
The hospital in Gernika was opened in 1938, this is, a whole year after the date the story is set in.
And the worst offender: I actually had to look chiqueada up because I had never heard it. According to RAE is a regional word from MEXICO to call a spoiled girl.
If anybody was wondering, I'm not planning on read any more.
This is just another example of a lazy author with absolutely no respect for the people and culture she wants her main character to be part of.
The amazing good reviews by professional crutics and readers makes it all much worse.
Ugh.

16 and 17 on the end of year book asks!
16. What is the most over-hyped book you read this year?
I read more than one book that was over-hyped, but I think for this one, I'll say Romancing Mister Bridgerton by Julia Quinn. How, might you ask, can a twenty-year-old romance novel be over-hyped? Easy: the Bridgerton girlies got excited because Colin and Penelope's book would be the subject of whatever season was the last one, and they found the book and chattered about it. If I recall correctly, I decided to read (or possibly reread--who can say at this point) this one because a reader described them as "kinky" in the book , and I think--no, that can't be right; Julia Quinn in 2002? Kinky? Certainly not. And it was not right. It's not a kinky book. That doesn't mean it's not fine for what it is, and if you have realistic expectations going into it, but a lot of people who have never read historical romance novels (or any romance novels) are discovering them because of Bridgerton, and well, I suppose even 2002 Julia Quinn can scandalize.
17. Did any books surprise you with how good they were?
I was a little surprised that The Last Victim by Karen Robards was as engaging as it was! I still have the rest of the series in mind for if I want to read more thrillers sometime. I don't read a lot of thrillers, but I saw someone describe it with one of those eye-catching sentences about one thing from the book with no other context, and it intrigued me enough to get me to read it. (Clearly, the way to advertise to me is not to do the little graphics with tropes and arrows; it's to tell me the one weirdest-sounding thing in the book and make me want to find out what the deal is.) It wasn't a perfect book, but still enjoyable.

I grew up with three little brothers. Every Christmas, we'd have piles of toy trucks and Lincoln Logs and G.I. Joes under the tree. Those were for them. For me? My No. 1 favorite present of all time: books. Two or three tall stacks of wonderful stories that I could lose myself in for weeks. Karen Robards

The writing team included the writers who also gave us two other movies I like: City Slickers and Fever Pitch. Parenthood accomplishes in general what the movie Rain Man did for my wife and me. It reminded us of our autistic daughter And made us laugh at stuff that frustrated us in “real life.“ Similarly Parenthood touches upon a lot of hotspots in the parenting experience and helps us laugh at them. Their is a fine Ensemble cast. I particularly like KianU Reeves as Tod, who seems like an inappropriate boyfriend for the daughter but who proves to be valuable in mentoring their disaffected son. There are many memorable situations but one line my wife and I often quote even after all these years occurs when the other son Larry is pushed out of a still moving vehicle by people he owes money to. His father, played straight by Jason Robards, asked who they were. Tod replies that they were just some friends. The memorable line by Robards’ character is, “Friends. Friends slow down; they even stop.” The movie is full of good one-liners, as well as more in-depth sources of humor. You must ...

Check out this listing I just added to my Poshmark closet: Lot of 10 Romance Novels.

can you recommend the good harlequin romance novels?
full disclosure I was using the word harlequin in a very loose way that fans of romance do sometimes to refer to a specific subset of romances, romances that are very light on plot and heavy on emotionalism and generally speaking revolve around a set of tropes that is agreed upon by fans of the genre (something that would be reflected in the future in fandom spaces!), and not “Harlequin” as the romance novel publishing house from the 50s that originated the use of the term. I hope this isn’t deeply disappointing to you because I still do have some recommendations off the top of my head!
I have read many (MANY) romances, and a lot of them are bad or contain some good things inside a lot of bad surroundings. The few that I can recommend with a straight face that I can remember:
Rebellion by Nora Roberts— Nora Roberts is one of the best selling and most prolific romance authors of all time and this is for a reason! Honestly I would recommend a lot of her work because she is just a very good author. This novel is one of her earlier works from the 80s before she branched out into fantasy. Set during the Jacobite Rising, starring the tomboy daughter of a Scottish laird who wants to pick up a sword to defend her family, and an English lord who gives up a life in England to help free Scotland from English rule. Kind of like if Pride and Prejudice was sexy and people were stabbed. General warning for the heavy discussion of sexual violence as well as situations of dubious consent.
Jewels of the Sun by Nora Roberts— had to recommend another by her, the lady knows her stuff! This is the first of a three part series, if you like this book you will love the next two! Set in modern day (so… 2000 when it was written lol) Ireland, a practical and stuffy author comes to the small town where her grandmother grew up to reconnect with herself after her divorce and meets the local pub owner who offers to help her write a book about local legends. Nora started dipping into fantasy around this time so this book does have some supernatural elements and some really interesting discussion of Irish mythology! This one is mostly focused on the main characters’ emotional journey rather than an external plot so it discusses finding yourself outside of romance, which I think is really fun!
Scandalous by Karen Robards— I will be honest this is probably the only novel I could ever recommend in good conscience from this author, there are two more in this series that are just okay but aren’t moving. Set in Regency era England, this book stars the oldest sister of a family of three neglected girls whose father dies leaving his entire estate to their estranged older brother, who dies suddenly just before he is due to inherit. The main character decides to pretend he is still alive in order to embezzle their father’s money and secure their future— but wait! A man shows up claiming to be their brother, and the main character is the only one who knows this is impossible. She makes an uneasy truce with the criminal who intends to take her brother’s place… but what if there’s something more between them? (They should hire me to write the blurbs on the back of books.) Protagonist isn’t a typical romance heroine! Warning for situations of dubious consent and the discussion of childhood sexual abuse.
Brigand Bride by Miriam Minger— if you want to read historical romances I would recommend Miriam Minger. She writes everything from Vikings to Victorians and her books are reliably fun reads that stick to a formula that works. Set some years after the Jacobite Rising, the main character is a nobleman’s daughter who moonlights as a ruffian who thwarts English soldiers, who suddenly has to deal with an English soldier who comes to occupy her land but like… feels bad about it? Suffers from romance novel syndrome but it’s still a fun read. General warning for the discussion of sexual violence.
Getting Rid of Bradley by Jennifer Crusie— if you want to have fun AND think about a romance for the rest of your life please read this book. Generally would recommend a lot of Jennifer Cruise’s work, she’s a good author with a very enjoyable style! Our heroine is a woman who has recently divorced her awful husband Bradley, and our hero is a detective looking for a criminal named Bradley. Due to coincidences he ends up moving in to protect her and her hilariously named group of dogs while investigating the connection between the two and silliness ensues. The drama is excellent and the comedy is better.
what I would recommend to anyone looking for romances is just to get into them! especially the ones with paintings of women in long dresses and flowers and stuff on the covers! I genuinely think there’s a lot of good stuff to be found in novels like those as long as you’re willing to wade through some bad stuff lol

Composta dai libri:
1. Irresistibile libertino (The perfect rake)
https://amzn.to/3wMNsCY
2. L’adorabile tenebroso (The perfect waltz)
https://amzn.to/3yXU02V
3. Adorabile sconosciuto (The perfect stranger)
https://amzn.to/3LN9B84
4. Il bacio perfetto (The perfect kiss)
https://amzn.to/3wHz8LQ
Composta dai libri:
1. Un uomo da domare (The bachelor list)
https://amzn.to/3lKGqIg
2. La legge dell’amore (The bride hunt)
https://amzn.to/3anv9eK
3. Sciarada di nozze (The wedding game)
https://amzn.to/3lI80WF
1.The countess
https://amzn.to/3yYdcxn
2. The heiress
https://amzn.to/3NyGPtb
3. The husband hunt
https://amzn.to/39TqnVS
Composta dai libri:
1. How to Tame Your Duke
https://amzn.to/3PUeAaH
2. How to Master Your Marquis
https://amzn.to/3sW3V5h
3. How to School Your Scoundrel
https://amzn.to/3sVgFZQ
