“While we continue to collect evidence, I want to say this very clearly: State-sanctioned kidnapping is not a public policy choice, it is immoral and disgusting,” California Attorney General Rob Bonta said in a statement.

L.A. Mayor Karen Bass slammed Abbott. “It is abhorrent that an American elected official is using human beings as pawns in his cheap political games,” she said in a statement.

Well, I *almost* ruined belated in-law Thanksgiving.

Some context- I am a teacher. My sister in law is a teacher. My mother in law was a teacher. My sister in law's sister in law (my husband's sister's husband's sister) is a teacher.

And my sister in law's mother in law *votes Republican.* I know this. We generally avoid the subject at family gatherings. We are not so close that she feels comfortable breaching Southern Hospitality protocols to make it an issue. We get by.

But here's the thing. Karen (her name really is Karen) asks me how the school year is going. Not great, I inform her. The teacher shortage has been somewhat disastrous at my district (some of which is national and state factors, some of which could have been mitigated at a local level and werent.)

And she's like "they've got to do something to help yall. They need to pay you better or something."

But Karen, I explain, *they*, the people in charge *cough*, don't WANT to help. This is what they want. It's sabotage. Public education isn't profitable. They want to make it awful for us so they can push for vouchers and funnel money into for-profit private schools.

But, she says, what will happen to the kids who can't go to private schools? Who private schools won't take? (I credit her daughter for this excellent question. Good job, Kendra. I see you trying to de-program your mom. It's working)

*They* don't care about *those* kids, Karen, I say gently. *They* don't want *those* kids to be able to read. To grow up and *vote* because kids from *those* families tend to not vote for Greg Abbott. *They* know that college educated voters vote more blue. It's sabotage.

I see her get quiet. I wonder if she'll push back now that I've named names, said the party, made it explicitly political. There is a tense moment where I can see her respect and love for her daughter and public Ed and education in general suddenly bucking against a lifetime of voting red in Texas. It didn't used to be this way. Republicans didn't always hate education, at least not so directly and openly. I wonder if this is the time when I went just a touch too far and now Thanksgiving is going to get real awkward real fast, because my in laws are VERY good at keeping the drama away from family gatherings like this and I may have just kicked a hornets nest a little too hard.

She stays quiet.

My mother in law says it's time for pie.

We eat pie. Karen made chocolate mousse, and it's wonderful.

Q. I didn't even think about budget cuts 😔

A. I mean the only reason FOX 'canceled' it was because of production cost. It was their highest rated show. It made absolutely no sense to cancel it until they mentioned how much the show cost to make. Their main cast is relatively large and they use major effects. Look at a show like Abbott Elementary for comparison. They have a relatively small main cast, they use essentially one location, and zero special effects. That's a cheap show to make. The bulk of their cost is their cast and crew. Now take 911. They have a larger main cast that includes Angela Bassett. A large cast that has been together the majority of their run. So you're paying Angela in a tier of her own, Jennifer and Pete in another tier. Then Oliver, Ryan, Aisha and Kenny. But given the longevity of the show and their places on the show Oliver, Ryan, Kenny and Aisha are not making less than $300,000 something an episode,and it's really probably closer to $400,000 something by now. That's just your cast. Now add the effects cost. Look at what we know so far about whatever the plane thing is to open this season. They had to pay to use the outside studio location, had to build part of a plane. It will definitely involve special effects of some kind. And on top of that their entire extended fire staff is on location. The 118, 133 and 217 are all involved. It's clearly massive. That's just for one maybe two episodes. They have 18 episodes this season. So if ABC said they had to cut cost somewhere where are they going to cut? They're not cutting a main. They are not dropping the effects or locations. They're not dropping the kids. That left the supporting cast. They're not going to cut Karen and Josh. So Ravi, Sue, Carla and company would be the cuts they'd choose to make. Now that doesn't save a ton of money but it's a start. We will probably see other cuts as well as the season goes on. It's a very expensive weekly production. Unfortunately cost cutting is a necessity. But again we don't really know anything for sure yet.

All of this is very interesting to read. I admit that I know little of the financial side of filming these shows. I knew it was very expensive, but this was still eye-opening to me.

In the end ABC is a business and businesses are in it to make money. They won't keep pumping money in a project that doesn't make a profit. Unfortunately that also means that some people might lose their jobs. 😕

But yeah, let's just wait for a while and see what happens. Who knows? Maybe he was just trolling us. 🤞🤞🤞

Sports:

-Varsity runner on xc for school as of this year, ive been running for xc for 6 years on middle school teams, and running groups, but i took a year break last year. I qualified for post season, but declined because i wanted to focus more on swim(late summer-fall sport)

-Club swimmer for 10 years, i have been on my current team for 7 years. I practice on average 15 hours a week. It is a very intense sport, which is why i normally high restrict (year round)

-Varsity swimmer for school last year, and i probably will be this year because not many people on my team swim the 500 free, which is what i went to districts for last year (winter sport)

-Varsity track runner for school last year (hopefully this year too) I have ran track w the high school, but i ran 8 years through middle school and elementary teams. (spring sport)

Other stuff i do:

-I lifeguard at my local rec center, working maybe 10 hours a week.

-I’m participate in a few clubs at school (mostly morning clubs, cuz im always busy after school) these clubs include: study buddies, french club, and the math club.

- I really like reading, and doing crosswords. my favorite books are probably “My Sister’s Keeper,” and “Landscape with Invisible Arm”

-I LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE movies. My favorites are “Heathers,” “American Beauty,” “Jawbreaker,” “But I’m A Cheerleader,” and “White Chicks”

-I like watching TV too, my favorite are “South Park,” “Daria,” “The Office,” “American Housewife,” “Abbott Elementary,” “Glee,” “Supersize vs Superskinny,” and “Fat Families”

-I also really like music, i fw most genres:

Synopsis: Rumor and Gator reunite.

Warnings: R*y Tillman, slight mention of how R*y treats his wives, language.

I woke up to the sound of pans clinging. I rolled over to see eleven am on the clock. I haven't slept in this late since my freshman year of college. My body feels rested. I feel rested. I walk into the bathroom to at least get ready if I’m making my appearance late.

But as soon as I was done, I walked downstairs. Momma and Dad were making their famous BLT sandwiches.

“Oh, look who decided to join us today,” Pops says as he sees me.

“Told you she needed to get food in her. We practically put her into a coma last night.” Momma said. I just chuckled at her antics. I looked around, seeing that it was eerily calm. 

“Where's the boys?” I said.

“Rhett is already doing his prep for tonight. Jane and Robert went to her doctor's appointment and took Rylee with them,” Momma said. I nodded as Pops handed me a plate of food.

“I bet the city doesn't have good BLTs like these.” He said, I took a bite and was sent to heaven. The city doesn’t have a lot. 

I spent a few hours just sitting with my parents. There was not much talking; they were just taking in one another.

Jane and Robert came back with Rylee. Momma is making Rylee, and I eat a plate of fruit and vegetables. 

It wasn't until two hours later that I noticed Momma getting visibly worried. She’s always like this when Rhett has a competition. She begins to pray, sweat, and at times send herself into an anxiety attack. Robert jokes that the entire process is Rhett’s good luck charm. If Momma isn't visibly upset, he won’t win. 

Rylee wanted to get ready with me, which I could not deny. I helped her pick out an outfit. Braided her hair and added bows.

“Sometimes she is a spitting image of you,” Jane says at the doorway.

“Begging to dress up, always speaking what's on her mind, and not afraid to get her hands dirty.”

“Runs in the blood,” I say, smiling as Rylee tries to get her boots on.

“Rylee, go help grandma and grandpa with the car.” 

Jane closes the door as Rylee runs downstairs.

“Your turn,” Jane says, walking up to me. She sits me down at the vanity and plugs in the curling iron. One thing Jane loves doing is hair, so this is like therapy for both of us. I talked to her about everything. Missing home, especially missing Gator. She tells me he comes by often to check in with my parents, her, and Robert. 

Gator would never verbally say he felt more at home under the Abbott roof. With the past of Linda, Nadine, and now Karen, Reese was the only mother figure who was a constant in his life. He saw how his father treated his wives and vowed to Reese that he would never do that, even if he didn't marry me. 

Jane and I continue to talk; I tell her about work and some of the cases I’ve helped on. I also complain about Vincent from the coffee shop.

She jokes, “Gator would kill him if you asked.” But deep down, I know Gator would do anything if I said I was uncomfortable with someone. 

Jane finished up my hair and helped with my outfit, and we were on our way to the grounds.

“You’re never round here anymore, Rumor,” Peter said to me. He was in the competition and grabbed me as I was looking for Gator.

“Yeah, well, I did move the day after graduation.” I was annoyed with Peter’s antics.

“Well, is there anything that could make you move back? Maybe someone?” He said, moving closer to me; I noticed he was trying to move his hat to fit onto my head sneakily. I begin to laugh at his foolish antics.

“You put that hat on her, Collins I swear I will break every single bone in that arm of yours.”

Right on time. 

I turn around to see the carrier of that voice. Still in full uniform, standing well over six feet. He has one hand on his belt while the other holds the top of his vest as he stalks over. Peter audibly gulps, standing in front of me.

“Move. Your pony ride is coming up.” He growls out as he is now standing next to me. Peter nods and frantically turns to walk away.

“What the hell am I gonna do with you? Not even a full twenty-four hours back home, and these assholes are already on the prowl for you,” I just shrug at his comment. I turn my body towards him. I wanted to take him in. 

His hair is slicked back, but I can tell it's longer. He smells like cologne and nicotine. I know he didn't grow, but with his work boots on, I feel as if I’m straining my neck a bit more to meet his eyes. He looks good. He notices me taking him in; he grows red in the cheeks and lets a small smile pass through.

“You look good,” I say.

“I look good because I knew my girl was back in town. Should've seen me yesterday; I was a mess.”

It was his turn to take me in. His eyes travel down and back up.

“Your hair got longer since I last saw you.”

He grabs my arm. I can feel what he is gonna say next.

“Did your Reese yell at you for not eating enough down there?”

“She's been feeding me as much as Rylee the entire day.”

He laughs. “You look good, Rue, “ he begins to move closer; I close my eyes and feel him ghost over my lips “You look good.” 

He finally pressed his lips onto mine. His lips were cold; they’d always been cold. I wrapped my arms around his neck to pull him in closer. 

Fuck did I miss this. 

He grabbed the loops of my jeans to pull me closer than I was before. I gasped at the maneuver and Gator took this to slide his tongue into my mouth. I could tell he was hungry through the way he kissed me. I can't blame him, though. 

For once in what felt like a lifetime, the world was quiet. There were no fears circulating in my mind. 

“Jesus, would you two knock it off! She didn't go off to war Gator!” 

And there it was, the one thing I wish would blow away in the breeze. Roy Tillman. Gator and I broke away from each other. I looked towards the voice. God, did he look worse with age.  

“Nice to see you too, Roy,” I said.

Roy never liked me from the moment I was born. Said I was a mistake my mother made. My father and he were good friends, almost like brothers growing up, but now the bond was too big to break. My father never shared the same values as Roy, but he knows that the thoughts and ideas Roy thinks are just a representation of generational trauma. 

Growing up, Roy always tried to tell my parents that my mouth was gonna get me in trouble. He hated that I was outspoken, especially towards men. 

One day, he talked about how he respected the army, navy, and peace officers, especially Federal Bureau of Investigation agents. I then spoke about how I also wanted to work for the FBI. Roy laughed at me for over an hour straight. The next day he woke up with all of his tires slashed. Still today they are looking for that culprit. 

“Heard you’re back for a few weeks. Quantico, realize you don’t fit the job description anymore?”

“Dad, come on, leave her–” Gator began to but in, but I never miss a chance to tell Roy to fuck off.

“No, Roy, they sent me up here. Said to start an investigation about a crooked Sherrif in a small town.” I said with a stern face. Roy went white for a minute, like the statement I was saying had truth behind it, but then he realized I was just doing his favorite thing, running my mouth.

He laughed and then grabbed a cigarette from his pocket, lighting up.

“You think you're funny, Rumor. You think you're funny.” He said, sauntering off towards the bleachers. 

Gator let out a laugh the second Roy was far enough to where he couldn't hear.

“I don’t think he’ll show up to our wedding.” 

“I think he’ll put me on America’s most wanted the day he finds out you're not a virgin,” I said, backfiring at his comment.

Gator just wrapped me in his arms, placing his lips on my head.

“How long do I have you for?”

“Rhett or Robbie are gonna drive me back next Thursday.”

“I can drive you back,” Gator said. I just nodded into his chest, not wanting to break our contact. Gator was my security blanket up here.

“I miss you, G,” I said into his chest.

I felt him squeeze me even tighter in his grasp. 

“You have no idea, Rue,” He said. I looked up to meet his eyes again. I could stare at him for hours. He had soft eyes that went dark, but right now, they were gleaming. He leaned in once again, meeting my lips—a short and sweet kiss. 

“Come on, let's go watch Rhett,” I said, unraveling myself from his embrace, but Gator didn't let me stray too far as he placed one of his hands in my pocket, something he had been doing since we got together.

Smithsonian’s National Zoo Asks Public to Name Andean Bear Cub Brothers by Smithsonian's National Zoo Via Flickr: Photo Credit: Connor Mallon, Smithsonian's National Zoo Vote here:http://nationalzoo.si.edu/ososhermanos The Smithsonian’s National Zoo, in collaboration with Univision’s ¡Despierta America!, is inviting the public to name two rambunctious and charismatic 18-week-old male Andean bear cubs. Starting today, March 16, fans can vote on the Zoo’s website for their favorite among names reflecting the cultural significance of Andean bears to the Quechua and Aymara, the indigenous communities of the Andes region, the native habitat of Andean bears. The public can vote until Sunday, March 22. The winning names will be announced live on ¡Despierta America! and at a media event Thursday, March 26, at the Andean bear exhibit. The following Saturday, March 28, the cubs will make their public debut. “By inviting everyone to select the cubs’ names, we hope to instill a connection to this charismatic yet vulnerable species,” said Dennis Kelly, director of the National Zoo. “Bear conservation efforts are vital for bears in their native habitats. I’m proud of our success in the past five years, which has been a combination of cooperative animals and keeper expertise.” Andean bears are known as Ukumari or simply Ukuku in Quechua and Hukumari or Jukumari in Aymara. They are said to protect travelers, especially musicians and dancers, during their pilgrimage to Q'oylluriti (a festival held high in the Andes mountain), oversee the festivities, and are conduits between the Apus (gods of the mountains) and the people. To the native cultures, Andean bears are known as being loving and happy, seeking harmony and balance in nature. The name choices for “Cub 1” are: •Larusiri: This name in the Aymara language means “giggly.” •Mayni: This is an Aymara word that means “unique.” •Kusisqa: This word in the Aymara language means “happy.” The name choices for the “Cub 2” are: •Tusuq: This is a name in the Quechua language that means “dancer.” •Muniri: This is a name in the Quechua language that means “loving.” •Wayna: This is a Quechua word that means “young.” “This is the first time we’ve had a pair of male cubs, and already we’re seeing them wrestle, pounce on and play with each other much more than our previous litters,” said Karen Abbott, animal keeper. “Their interaction with one another and Mom is especially endearing; I think the public will enjoy watching them play and explore their yard.” The cubs were born to 8-year-old mother Billie Jean and 21-year-old father Cisco Nov. 10 and 11, 2014. They have spent the past four months bonding with Billie Jean in a den at the Andean Bear exhibit. Animal care staff have been closely monitoring the family via a closed-circuit cam. The birth of these cubs is significant for the population of Andean bears in human care. Three of the five Andean bear cub litters born at North American zoos in the past 10 years were at the National Zoo. The information gathered from watching their behavior will be shared with the Association of Zoos and Aquariums for the benefit of other institutions that want to exhibit and breed this species. Andean bears are South America’s only bear species, and as their name suggests, they live in the Andes and outlying mountain ranges—from western Venezuela through the Andes in Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, and ending in northwest Argentina. Also called spectacled bears, Andean bears have beige “spectacles” encircle these bears’ eyes, giving each individual a unique set of markings. Andean bears are listed as vulnerable on the International Union for Conservation of Nature's Red List of Threatened Species, and it is estimated that there are only 20,000 left in the wild. Habitat destruction and hunting pose the greatest threats to their survival. Zoo visitors can see 2-year-old bears Curt and Nicole, as well as Cisco, on exhibit near the lower entrance to American Trail, weather permitting. The Smithsonian is bringing the cultural vibrancy, history and biodiversity of Peru and the Andean region of South America to the nation’s capital. Through a series of programs, exhibits and events across the Smithsonian, visitors will learn about the rich history and achievements of indigenous communities, the importance of cultural continuity and traditions, and the conservation of biodiversity in the region.
