Super Bowl 59: Philadelphia Eagles vs Kansas City Chiefs Preview
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/d091df1e9a83cab29879f9c5529f8671/ed24d936d9725c31-f0/s540x810/965aa0990547bb08c4f32b91d968b7756bc5e2b9.jpg)
The 59th edition of the NFL Super Bowl is a rematch of Super Bowl 57 between the Chiefs and the Eagles, and while it's fair to think that Super Bowl rematches tend to suffer in terms of pre-game excitement, that is not the case for me. Not this time.
This rematch, ladies and gentlemen, is biggest rematch in Superbowl history. With arguably the biggest stakes too.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/503ffcad86da91ac2c5baaf5c90c459b/ed24d936d9725c31-51/s540x810/f13453e609fac635322fe76c6117d6b84ad22da8.jpg)
Kansas City Chiefs vs Philadelphia Eagles
You know, I try to watch a lot of Chiefs games and I just have to be honest with you, I just don't see it.
I don't see how an offense with so few truly explosive weapons, can score and dominate this Eagles defense.
Now the Chiefs certainly boast one of the best offensive lines in the league and Xavier Worthy, Kareem Hunt, Isiah Pacheco, Juju Smith-Schuster are all fine players, but other than Travis Kelce, none of their weapons are a mismatch that demands a double-team.
The real mismatch on the Chiefs offense is their quarterback, and Patrick Mahomes was sensational on Championship Weekend with 3 touchdowns, 245 passing yards, 18-26 on pass attempts. He is the real mismatch no one else has the capability of getting their offense going when it matters the most.
That's why, for the Eagles to have any chance of winning, their defense have got to replicate what the Tampa Bay Buccaneers did in 2020, when their defensive line hit Mahomes 10 times and sacked him 3 times, in the only Super Bowl the Chiefs ever lost.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/e62e3e4eaa08e82330e705f6a9616af5/ed24d936d9725c31-f2/s540x810/ad130661f4caf7cad451e9599fe73716be7fe5fa.jpg)
It's a similar story with the Chiefs defense.
Other than Chris Jones at defensive tackle, they don't have a guy that demands a double, and the Chiefs defense became one of my favorite to watch in the league this year because of it.
Chiefs D are far from the most talented you'll ever watch, in as far as individual players. Everything they do is a product of Steve Spagnuolo's scheme and the timing of his blitz calls, like the one he called at the end of the AFC championship game that saw George Karlaftis sack Josh Allen to win.
What it's going to come down to however, is Kellen Moore's offense against Steve Spagnuolo's defense, and I'm telling you, I think the Eagles like the matchups here.
Spag's biggest issue, is how to stop Saquon Barkley without putting an extra guy in the box.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/e5558f88bf1df6a51d8a7bab9e67f9a1/ed24d936d9725c31-3a/s540x810/908d63e7445e003a3b6dfe912f8f1e54e2da8b6b.jpg)
While at some point in the game, Jalen Hurts is going to have to make throws, and I do believe the Eagles wideouts can win their 1-on-1's, get separation and make big catches. Very doable, given how the Chiefs gave up 218 passing yards per game in the regular season.
However, the Eagles cannot forget what brought them to the dance and where their mismatches are!!!!
Committing to running Saquon Barkley at least 25 times, supplemented by 10 or more Jalen Hurts carries, as well as at least 12-18 catches between AJ Brown and Dallas Goedert, is the formula for success for Philly's offense, and the Eagles are going to have to be careful given the injuries to Cam Jurgens and Landon Dickerson on the O-line.
Listen, I get real cocky, both online and in real life, but I just can't see a way for Spags to deploy his safeties to stop the run without opening up something else like AJ Brown and DeVante Smith catches, or a Jalen Hurts scramble.
Spags will fall back on good old-fashion trickery with mid-blitzes, corner blitzes and he'll surely bring the house on a couple of plays.
No doubt, a lot of time is going to be spent trying to fool Jalen Hurt's eyes, anticipating the RPO's and getting the Eagles in to long down situations, but can they do that while stopping the Saquon run too?
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/71249c2a7fedbf59887b84d1296156b2/ed24d936d9725c31-a4/s540x810/ebceed83dde50d4ba08560bb5c132724b8163772.jpg)
My biggest worry howevever, isn't Kansas City's defense, or their 12-16 play drives led by Mahomes in the 4th quarter. No, the number one thing I'm worried about, is penalties and ref ball.
It's become farcical with how this Chiefs team have been getting penalty flags thrown in their favor, and it's the number 1 reason why I am going to pick the Chiefs to win this game.
I don't care about making the right pick, I refuse to jinx the Eagles and allow my blog to be the reason the Eagles lose this game, and because I understand that ref ball WILL be a factor, I am picking the Chiefs, and I have absolutely no problems rooting against this awful, awful, awful pick.
My Prediction: Kansas City Chiefs win 23-20 via ref ball (jinx pick)

New York Jets vs. Cleveland Browns | 2023 Week 17 Game Highlights
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/2f57b42fc201bc08c7114578a118e2b5/ecdd5f9e20c491ec-2e/s540x810/8de5f2e42fa50de27c9964cea4ea8de36b57190f.jpg)
The Cleveland Browns QB threw for 296 yards and 3 TDs in the FIRST HALF to lead his team into the locker room with a 34-17 lead over the NY Jets. Flacco connected with David Njoku early and often, as the big TE put up 128 first half yards. Flacco also found Jerome Ford on a pair of TDs, including one in the final minutes of the half that had Flacco looking like Lamar Jackson and Ford looking like Christian McCaffrey. Elijah Moore also caught a TD, and Kareem Hunt ran one in to give the Browns a commanding lead. Rookie safety Ronnie Hickman returned a pick-6 to the house as well, as the Browns put up a season high 35 points. Flacco's only mistake came when he threw a pick-6 to Jermaine Johnson on an attempted screen. Other than that, he was flawless. The Browns are a now just a few minutes away from clinching a home playoff berth for the first time since 2002. The city is about to go wild. It's about to be chaos. Buckle up Browns fans, you've earned this.

The Nazi Bar on the Corner
Mike Masnick • Techdirt
Eventually, the Substack founders had to respond. They couldn’t stare off into the distance like Best did during the Nilay Patel interview in April. So another founder, Hamish McKenzie, finally published a Note saying “yes, we allow Nazis and we’re not going to stop.” Of course, as is too often the case on these things, he tried to couch it as a principled stance
Robert Reich Michael Moore Steven Beschloss Virginia Heffernan Mary L. Trump Joyce Vance Michael McFaul Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Platformer (Casey Newton)
This is a list of folks I’ve been following on Substack. I currently pay for one of those subscriptions and I will no longer be doing that.
There are a lot of wonderful writers and thinkers in that list and I’m shocked they’ve chosen to hang out in the Nazi bar. It’s disgusting.
I’m sure there are many other great writers I don’t know about using Substack but it’s time to move on people. Start your own blog and offer a newsletter from there. Want to monetize it? Hanging out with Nazis to get a paycheck is still hanging out with Nazis and it means you support them.
Try WordPress, Ghost, or Buttondown.

Alabama GOP Refuses To Draw Second Black District, Despite Supreme Court Order
Alabama Republicans rejected calls to draw a second majority-Black congressional district this week, instead creating maps that Democrats and advocates say completely ignore a recent ruling from the U.S. Supreme Court.
A federal court ordered the state to redraw its congressional map last year to include two districts where Black voters make up voting-age majorities, “or something quite close to it.” The Supreme Court affirmed the ruling this year, prompting the Legislature to call a special session to redraw the map this week.
But on Friday, the Republican-controlled Legislature is poised to pass a map with just one majority-Black seat. They're currently considering two drafts: The House map includes a second district that is 42% Black, while the Senate map includes a district that is 38% Black. Lawmakers are expected to meet Friday in conference committee to select one of those maps, or a compromise.
Republicans have insisted the maps would give Black voters an opportunity to elect the representatives of their choice as required by the courts, but Democrats, voting rights experts and the groups that sued the original maps disagree.
State Rep. Juandalynn Givan, a Democrat from Birmingham, expressed shock that GOP legislators “would blatantly flip off the United States Supreme Court” with the map in debate this week.
Kareem Clayton, an Alabama native who is a redistricting expert at the Brennan Center for Justice at New York University School of Law, said his team looked at 15 recent elections to see how the proposed district lines would perform.
They found that the candidate preferred by Black voters would win four times out of 15 under the House plan, while Black voters could elect their preferred candidate just once under the Senate plan. And that win was narrow, deriving from a remarkable upset: former Sen. Doug Jones' historic upset over Roy Moore, a Republican accused of sexual misconduct with teenagers. -(source: nbc news)
Stay tuned…

Final word on Smith/Rock
From Kareem Abdul-Jabbar:
When Will Smith stormed onto the Oscar stage to strike Chris Rock for making a joke about his wife’s short hair, he did a lot more damage than just to Rock’s face. With a single petulant blow, he advocated violence, diminished women, insulted the entertainment industry, and perpetuated stereotypes about the Black community.
That’s a lot to unpack. Let’s start with the facts: Rock made a reference to Smith’s wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, as looking like Demi Moore in GI Jane, in which Moore had shaved her head. Jada Pinkett Smith suffers from alopecia, which causes hair loss. Ok, I can see where the Smiths might not have found that joke funny. But Hollywood awards shows are traditionally a venue where much worse things have been said about celebrities as a means of downplaying the fact that it’s basically a gathering of multimillionaires giving each other awards to boost business so they can make even more money.
The Smiths could have reacted by politely laughing along with the joke or by glowering angrily at Rock. Instead, Smith felt the need to get up in front of his industry peers and millions of people around the world, hit another man, then return to his seat to bellow: “Keep my wife's name out of your fucking mouth.” Twice.
Some have romanticized Smith’s actions as that of a loving husband defending his wife. Comedian Tiffany Haddish, who starred in the movie Girls Trip with Pinkett Smith, praised Smith’s actions: “[F]or me, it was the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen because it made me believe that there are still men out there that love and care about their women, their wives.”
Actually, it was the opposite. Smith’s slap was also a slap to women. If Rock had physically attacked Pinkett Smith, Smith’s intervention would have been welcome. Or if he’d remained in his seat and yelled his post-slap threat, that would have been unnecessary, but understandable. But by hitting Rock, he announced that his wife was incapable of defending herself—against words. From everything I’d seen of Pinkett Smith over the years, she’s a very capable, tough, smart woman who can single-handedly take on a lame joke at the Academy Awards show.
This patronizing, paternal attitude infantilizes women and reduces them to helpless damsels needing a Big Strong Man to defend their honor least they swoon from the vapors. If he was really doing it for his wife, and not his own need to prove himself, he might have thought about the negative attention this brought on them, much harsher than the benign joke. That would have been truly defending and respecting her. This “women need men to defend them” is the same justification currently being proclaimed by conservatives passing laws to restrict abortion and the LGBTQ+ community.
Worse than the slap was Smith’s tearful, self-serving acceptance speech in which he rambled on about all the women in the movie King Richard that he’s protected. Those who protect don’t brag about it in front of 15 million people. They just do it and shut up. You don’t do it as a movie promotion claiming how you’re like the character you just won an award portraying. But, of course, the speech was about justifying his violence. Apparently, so many people need Smith’s protection that occasionally it gets too much and someone needs to be smacked.
What is the legacy of Smith’s violence? He’s brought back the Toxic Bro ideal of embracing Kobra Kai teachings of “might makes right” and “talk is for losers.” Let’s not forget that this macho John Wayne philosophy was expressed in two movies in which Wayne spanked grown women to teach them a lesson. Young boys—especially Black boys—watching their movie idol not just hit another man over a joke, but then justify it as him being a superhero-like protector, are now much more prone to follow in his childish footsteps. Perhaps the saddest confirmation of this is the tweet from Smith’s child Jaden: “And That’s How We Do It.”
The Black community also takes a direct hit from Smith. One of the main talking points from those supporting the systemic racism in America is characterizing Blacks as more prone to violence and less able to control their emotions. Smith just gave comfort to the enemy by providing them with the perfect optics they were dreaming of. Many will be reinvigorated to continue their campaign to marginalize African Americans and others through voter suppression campaign.
As for the damage to show business, Smith’s violence is an implied threat to all comedians who now have to worry that an edgy or insulting joke might be met with violence. Good thing Don Rickles, Bill Burr, or Ricky Gervais weren’t there. As comedian Kathy Griffin tweeted: “Now we all have to worry about who wants to be the next Will Smith in comedy clubs and theaters.”
The one bright note is that Chris Rock, clearly stunned, managed to handle the moment with grace and maturity. If only Smith’s acceptance speech had shown similar grace and maturity—and included, instead of self-aggrandizing excuses, a heartfelt apology to Rock.
💯

“Trump wants to move us back to 1952 but he’s not Eisenhower – who was the type of Republican that cared about the whole nation. Even George Bush Sr and George W Bush’s idea of fellow citizens did not exclude people of colour. George W’s cabinet looked like America. It had Condoleezza Rice and the Mexican American gentleman who was the attorney general [Alberto Gonzales] and Colin Powell. Women had important positions in his administration. Even though I did not like his policies, he wasn’t exclusionary.
“Look what’s going on with Trump in Alabama [where the president supports Roy Moore in the state senate election despite his favoured candidate being accused of multiple sexual assaults of under-age girls]. You have a guy like him but he’s going to vote the way you want politically. That’s more important than what he’s accused of? People with that frightening viewpoint are still fighting a civil war. They have to be contained.”
Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, from an interview in the GUARDIAN.

No need to prepare your Draft, whether you're a beginner or experienced player, just use this list and you'll be set. In Standard Scoring Leagues you don't get points for receptions, so you will have to prioritize touchdown-heavy players. In this format, running backs are going to be a priority, so they have a slight edge over wide receiver. However, a receiving running back is also important because you have double the chance to score. If your league allows it, I would start three RBs every week. These will get you the most touchdowns besides a quarterback. So, remember to do after those red zone threats. In the end, they will make the difference when it comes to Standard Scoring formats. If you, like me, enjoy retellings of all sorts, and you, like me, particularly love the gloomy atmosphere that comes with 1890s England, and you, like me, don’t enjoy reading books that take place in historical eras/locations because they can be overtly sexist/racist/ableist/shitty in general:
Perhaps.... DON’T read The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen by Alan Moore.
Perhaps, instead TRY the series by Theodora Goss called “The Extraordinary Adventures of the Athena Club” which is a trilogy with the following books:
Book 1: The Strange Case of the Alchemist's Daughter
Book 2: European Travel for the Monstrous Gentlewoman
Book 3: The Sinister Mystery of the Mesmerizing Girl
Which is almost exactly the same concept as the Alan Moore comic (classic British sci-fi/horror characters solve mysteries and defeat villains) but it concentrates on the female characters that are side dressing in the original stories, and creates more female characters that didn’t really exist in the original stories. The main character, I guess (it’s an ensemble-type story) would be Mary Jekyll, the daughter of, you know, Dr. Jekyll.
Or perhaps, for a more Holmes-centric story, a series I haven’t caught up on yet, the “Mycroft Holmes and Sherlock” series by the famous basketball man Kareem Abdul-Jabbar with the following books:
Book 1: Mycroft Holmes
Book 2: Mycroft and Sherlock
Book 3: Mycroft and Sherlock: The Empty Birdcage
