From self-defence to self-empowerment with Melbourne Dragons
New Post has been published on https://qnews.com.au/from-self-defence-to-self-empowerment-with-melbourne-dragons/
From self-defence to self-empowerment with Melbourne Dragons
Strength comes in all shapes, sizes and abilities, and no one knows that more than the Melbourne Dragons.
Melbourneâs first inclusive LGBTQIA+ martial arts club, the Melbourne Dragons, was born from a community need for self-defence classes.
When we think martial arts, I know the first thing many of us think of is Mr Miyagi saying, âWax on. Wax Offâ in Karate Kid.
But the skill and training you learn through martial arts means so much more for members of our communities looking for connection.
âFor me, seeking out the Melbourne Dragons was more than health and fitness.âDragons President Lilith told us.
âI was looking to find some extra confidence, to learn self-defence, as well as find a bit of community.â
Everyoneâs personal goals are different.
âWhen I started a year ago, it was about fitness and confidence, and then I built up to a few tournaments.â
âEven though there is a lot of individualism because martial arts are about improving oneself, youâre still part of the community.â
âImparting knowledge to others is a really big thing for me, and helps build great connections as well.â Lilith said.

Itâs never too late to start
Melbourne Dragons offer martial Arts and self-defence classes in a queer-friendly dojo.
They also run weekly Karate and Muay Thai/Kickboxing sessions in a supportive and inclusive environment.
âThe original idea was about starting self-defence classes for the LGBTQ+ community.â Sensei and founding member Damien told us.
âAfter the six-week course, it grew from there.â
Nine years on, the club continues to help the community grow in ability, confidence and fitness.
âWe are very open and welcome, and people can train at their own pace.â
âEveryone knows what itâs like to walk in on that first day and how nervous it can be.â
The Melbourne Dragons offer one free trial class to come along to the dojo and see what itâs like before you commit.
âAs an instructor, it is great for me to watch when a person first comes in and see their progress build as their body starts to build on technique,â Damien said.
âTo see people who canât throw a punch on day way progress to kicking head height and see the confidence grow in them is great.â
Supplied
More than defence
When talking about why members wanted to try martial arts, bullying when young is a theme that kept coming up.
But you learn more about yourself as your defence training grows.
âFor me, as I learned more, it became a source of resilience within me,â Damien said,
âI realised that if I wanted to, I could hurt someone, but knowing youâre making a choice not to do that is very powerful.â
âA message I want everyone who walks through our door to know is that what we do is about empowerment.â
âJoining dragons and embracing a bunch of things through martial arts has changed my life, fitness and confidence overall,â Lilith told us.
âItâs made me a better person in ways both emotionally, physically and socially.â
âI even embraced a bit of athleticism by competing above my belt in a competition where I have medals now.â they said
Lillith recently placed 1st in a few categories at a state championship.
âNot bad for a 34-year-old queer woman who used to get picked last in sports and bullied in school.â
You can find out more about Melbourne Dragons here.

Guide to Selling Gold in Melbourne: What You Need to Know Before Approaching Gold Buyers
The gold-buying market in Melbourne is flourishing, with many individuals looking to sell their gold for cash. Whether it's old jewelry, coins, or even scrap gold, understanding the process before selling your gold can ensure you get the best deal. This blog will cover the essential aspects you need to know about Gold Buyers in Melbourne and tips to maximize the value of your gold.
Understanding the Value of Your Gold
Gold prices fluctuate daily based on global market trends. Before visiting a gold buyer in Melbourne, it is crucial to understand how the value of gold is determined. Factors like the weight, purity (measured in karats), and current market price (often called the "spot price") will influence the offer you receive.
How is Purity Measured?
Gold purity is measured in karats (K). 24K is pure gold, but most jewelry is 18K (75% gold) or 9K (37.5% gold). The higher the karat, the more valuable your gold is.
Research Reputable Gold Buyers
Not all gold buyers in Melbourne are created equal. Look for reputable buyers with positive reviews, transparent pricing, and a solid track record. Some buyers may offer instant cash, while others may provide higher rates if youâre willing to wait for a bank transfer.
Where to Sell Your Gold in Melbourne:
Pawnshops: Offer convenience but might provide lower rates.
Jewelry stores: May offer more personalized service but at varying prices.
Specialized Gold Buyers: Often provide better rates based on up-to-date gold market values.
Request Multiple Quotes
Itâs always wise to shop around. Visit multiple gold buyers in Melbourne and ask for quotes before making a decision. This will give you an idea of the current rate and ensure you are not underselling your gold.
Check for Hidden Fees or Charges
Some buyers may charge for melting or refining gold. Always ask upfront if there are any fees or deductions that might reduce the payout. Reputable gold buyers are transparent about their fees and should provide an accurate breakdown of how they calculate their offers.
Spot Price Awareness
Gold buyers will base their offer on the "spot price" of gold on that day. Itâs essential to stay updated on the current gold spot price, which can be easily found online. This will give you a benchmark when negotiating prices with buyers.
Selling Different Types of Gold
Gold isnât limited to jewelry. You can sell various forms of gold, such as:
Gold Coins: Be sure to check if your coins have collectible value, which can make them more valuable than their gold content.
Gold Bars: Typically easier to sell, and often fetch higher prices due to their purity and standard weight.
Scrap Gold: Broken jewelry, mismatched earrings, and even dental gold can be sold, though the price will depend on the purity and weight.
Timing Matters
Gold prices fluctuate based on economic and political factors. If you are not in immediate need of cash, it might be worth monitoring the market and waiting for gold prices to peak.
Understand the Process of Selling Gold
The process of selling gold is straightforward. Once you present your gold, the buyer will weigh and assess its purity. You will then be offered a price based on current market rates and the purity of your gold. Ensure you have proper identification with you, as most buyers in Melbourne require this by law.
Secure Transactions
When selling gold, ensure that transactions are handled securely. Always ask for a receipt or documentation of the sale, and never feel pressured to accept a deal if youâre unsure. Established buyers will conduct business professionally and give you the time you need to make a decision.
Conclusion
Selling gold in Melbourne can be a lucrative way to free up some cash, but itâs essential to approach the process informed. By understanding the value of your gold, comparing buyers, and being aware of the market, you can ensure you get the best possible deal.

What to Know Before Buying a Mouthguard for Martial Arts?
Did you know that a tiny piece of gear could be the one thing standing between you and a dental disaster? Yes, weâre talking about mouthguards Melbourne âan essential yet often overlooked component in the martial arts gear kit.
Whether youâre a beginner karate enthusiast or a seasoned jiu-jitsu practitioner, protecting your smile should be high on your priority list.
Today, let's dive into the world of mouthguards, understanding why they are indispensable in martial arts and how to choose the perfect one for your fighting style and needs.
Understanding the Importance of Mouthguards in Martial Arts
Mouthguards serve a fundamental purposeâprotecting your teeth and jaw during combat sports. The swift kicks and punches inherent in martial arts can lead to accidental impacts on your mouth, potentially causing chipped teeth, jaw injuries, or worse. A mouthguard absorbs and disperses the force of impacts, minimising injury risks and ensuring that your focus remains on your technique, not on avoiding injury.
Types of Mouthguards: Choose Your Protector
There are primarily three types of mouthguards: Stock Mouthguards: These are pre-formed and ready to wear. Theyâre the most accessible and economical option but offer the least protection because of their generic fit. Boil-and-Bite Mouthguards: A more popular choice among martial artists, these mouthguards are first softened in boiling water and then inserted into the mouth to form a custom fit around the teeth and gums.
Custom-Made Mouthguards: Created by a dental professional from a mould of your teeth, these offer the best fit, comfort, and protection. They are, however, the most expensive option.
Material Matters: Whatâs Your Mouthguard Made Of?
The material of your mouthguard significantly affects its comfort, durability, and level of protection. Most mouthguards Melbourne are made from a type of plastic called EVA (ethylene-vinyl acetate), which is both durable and flexible.
Some high-end models might include layers of acrylic for added shock absorption. When choosing your mouthguard, ensure the materials are BPA-free and approved by relevant health and safety standards to avoid any health risks.
Fit and Comfort: Ensuring Your Mouthguard Matches You
The effectiveness of a mouthguard largely depends on its fit. A poorly fitting mouthguard can be uncomfortable, making breathing and speaking difficult, and can even fall out during a fight, leaving you unprotected.
Whether you're considering boil-and-bite or custom-made mouthguards, ensuring they accommodate specific dental needs, such as dentures, is crucial for optimal fit and protection. Seek professional guidance, especially in areas like Melbourne, where specialized services like dentures Melbourne can provide tailored solutions for your oral health needs.
Maintenance and Hygiene: Keeping Your Guard Up
Maintaining your mouthguard is crucial for ensuring it remains effective and hygienic. After each use, rinse it thoroughly under cold water and brush it with a toothbrush and toothpaste to remove any debris and bacteria.
Store your mouthguard in a ventilated case to dry completely between uses to prevent bacterial growth. Regular inspection for wear and tear is also important; replace your mouthguard at least every six months or sooner if you notice any damage.
Aesthetic and Extras: Beyond the Basics
Todayâs mouthguards come in various colours and styles, allowing martial artists to express their personalities without compromising on safety. Some mouthguards even come with flavouring, which can make wearing them a more pleasant experience, especially for younger martial artists.
Additionally, certain mouthguards offer features like straps to attach them to helmets, which can be particularly useful in sports like Taekwondo or MMA, where additional headgear is worn.
Legal and Professional Requirements: Know the Rules
In many competitions, wearing a mouthguard is mandatory. Check the specific rules and regulations of your martial arts discipline and ensure that your mouthguard meets the necessary safety standards. Moreover, some insurance policies for sports might require wearing a mouthguard as part of their coverage conditions.
Wrapping Up
To wrap up, choosing the right mouthguard is a crucial decision for any martial artist. It not only protects your dental health but also enhances your performance by letting you train and compete with peace of mind.
Consider all these aspects carefully to select a mouthguards Melbourne that suits your specific needs in martial arts. Remember, a good mouthguard is an investment in your safety, performance, and longevity in the sport. Choose wisely and fight safely!
