From self-defence to self-empowerment with Melbourne Dragons
New Post has been published on https://qnews.com.au/from-self-defence-to-self-empowerment-with-melbourne-dragons/
From self-defence to self-empowerment with Melbourne Dragons
Strength comes in all shapes, sizes and abilities, and no one knows that more than the Melbourne Dragons.
Melbourne’s first inclusive LGBTQIA+ martial arts club, the Melbourne Dragons, was born from a community need for self-defence classes.
When we think martial arts, I know the first thing many of us think of is Mr Miyagi saying, ‘Wax on. Wax Off’ in Karate Kid.
But the skill and training you learn through martial arts means so much more for members of our communities looking for connection.
“For me, seeking out the Melbourne Dragons was more than health and fitness.”Dragons President Lilith told us.
“I was looking to find some extra confidence, to learn self-defence, as well as find a bit of community.”
Everyone’s personal goals are different.
“When I started a year ago, it was about fitness and confidence, and then I built up to a few tournaments.”
“Even though there is a lot of individualism because martial arts are about improving oneself, you’re still part of the community.”
“Imparting knowledge to others is a really big thing for me, and helps build great connections as well.” Lilith said.

It’s never too late to start
Melbourne Dragons offer martial Arts and self-defence classes in a queer-friendly dojo.
They also run weekly Karate and Muay Thai/Kickboxing sessions in a supportive and inclusive environment.
“The original idea was about starting self-defence classes for the LGBTQ+ community.” Sensei and founding member Damien told us.
“After the six-week course, it grew from there.”
Nine years on, the club continues to help the community grow in ability, confidence and fitness.
“We are very open and welcome, and people can train at their own pace.”
“Everyone knows what it’s like to walk in on that first day and how nervous it can be.”
The Melbourne Dragons offer one free trial class to come along to the dojo and see what it’s like before you commit.
“As an instructor, it is great for me to watch when a person first comes in and see their progress build as their body starts to build on technique,” Damien said.
“To see people who can’t throw a punch on day way progress to kicking head height and see the confidence grow in them is great.”

More than defence
When talking about why members wanted to try martial arts, bullying when young is a theme that kept coming up.
But you learn more about yourself as your defence training grows.
“For me, as I learned more, it became a source of resilience within me,” Damien said,
“I realised that if I wanted to, I could hurt someone, but knowing you’re making a choice not to do that is very powerful.”
“A message I want everyone who walks through our door to know is that what we do is about empowerment.”
“Joining dragons and embracing a bunch of things through martial arts has changed my life, fitness and confidence overall,” Lilith told us.
“It’s made me a better person in ways both emotionally, physically and socially.”
“I even embraced a bit of athleticism by competing above my belt in a competition where I have medals now.” they said
Lillith recently placed 1st in a few categories at a state championship.
“Not bad for a 34-year-old queer woman who used to get picked last in sports and bullied in school.”
You can find out more about Melbourne Dragons here.

Northern Shukokai Karate - Kids & Adults Karate Classes Melbourne
Karate Melbourne is the ideal place for people who are looking to improve their Karate skills. I live close to both Sandringham Beach and North Harbor in Melbourne, Australia. The area just east of Burleigh Heads is known as Karate Beach. This is a very popular area with tourists, surfers, water sportsmen, and even movie stars because of its quiet natural beauty. Karate in this area has been around for many years but it has only gained in popularity over the last few decades. There are many schools in this area that teach various styles of Karate, so finding one that you like should not be a problem. Karate Melbourne classes can be found in most community centers and there are also some very good private Karate classes around. This form of martial art is practiced globally, although in Japan, it is more prominent in Waipahihi, which is a small island just south of Melbourne. There are classes near me at the Sandringham Beach complex but I have also taken classes in the area around North Harbor and in the town of Southbank. Some of the best Karate Melbourne classes are located in the town of Bellingen, which is just south of Melbourne, and in Broadlands, which is just west of the city. You can learn a wide variety of different Karate styles in these areas, including traditional styles such as Japanese karate, which is very popular and taught at Karate Melbourne schools. There is also combat karate, such as karate jujitsu, judo, kung fu, karate nage-komis, and karate caiman. There are also BJJ and Jiu-Jitsu classes as well. You can even get a training certificate in Karate here. In addition to learning Karate in Melbourne, you can do other types of workouts, such as rock climbing, mountain biking, kayaking, snorkeling, and diving. So, if you are interested in doing some exercise and want to increase your physical condition, do so with Karate Melbourne.

15 questions, 15 mutuals
I was tagged by @jemariel--now go to sleep, you.
Are you named after anyone? Nope! My parents just liked the name :)
When was the last time you cried? Maybe Sunday night? Otherwise I think it might have been Friday night. I’ve been having a stressful time, okay
Do you have kids? Absolutely not
Do you use sarcasm a lot? No, not really. It’s too easy for it to be misinterpreted sometimes, especially over the internet, and I’m just not a fan.
What’s the first thing you notice about people? Either their mouth/smile, or what they’re wearing. Like jem said, I also tend to focus on visible tattoos if they’re ones I really like :)
What’s your eye colour? Looks brown from a distance, but is actually brown and green.
Scary movie or happy ending? Happy ending every time. I do not deal well with the scary things.
Any special talents? Uhh... karate? Poi? Losing my damn headphones?
Where were you born? Melbourne, Australia
What are your hobbies? Writing, karate, watching YouTube, hiking, going adventures with friends, and I used to do horse riding which I miss so damn much
Have any pets? Not at the moment. Two years ago I was leasing a Clydesdale x Welsh pony named Meeko, but at the moment I don’t have the money or the space for pets :(
What sports have you or do you play? I used to play tennis, played basketball and did dressage/showjumping for a long time, and now I do karate.
How tall are you? 169.5cm (almost 5′6″)
Favourite school subject? At the moment it’s my zoology classes :)
Dream job? Anything involving being hands-on with animals.
