In Poland, Donald Tusk (the GOOD Donald) was formally sworn in as prime minister on Wednesday along with the rest of his government. He gave a speech in the Sejm, parts of which you can see with subtitles above.
He has promised to undo much of what the previous rightwing PiS government had done for the past eight years.
Expect Poland to play an increasingly important role in EU affairs.
Things may be bumpy into mid 2025. Lame duck President Andrzej Duda, associated with PiS, will remain in office until the next presidential election set for May of 2025.
Tusk is pro-democracy, pro-NATO, pro-Europe, pro-Ukraine, pro-US, anti-Putin, and anti-bigotry. What's not to like? 😁
This is the new cabinet.
Several notable ministers...
Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz - A Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defense. He's from Trzecia Droga (Third Way), one of Tusk's coalition partners.
Krzysztof Gawkowski - Another Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Digital Affairs. He's from Nowa Lewnica (New Left), Tusk's other coalition partner.
Adam Bodnar - Minister of Justice. An anti-racist who previously served as Commissioner of Human Rights.
Barbara Nowacka – Minister of Education. She is an advocate of separation of church and state and leading opponent of the strict anti-abortion law passed by the recently defeated PiS government. IMHO, she's one of the best speakers in Polish politics.
Radosław "Radek" Sikorski - Minister of Foreign Affairs. A veteran colleague of Tusk who served as Foreign Minister and Defense Minister in previous governments. His wife happens to be American historian and journalist Anne Applebaum.
Speaking of Sikorski, he's already spoken with Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Ukraine's Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba who invited him to Kyiv.
This government has hit the ground running.

Poland has started building defensive lines on the border with Russia as part of the "East Shield" initiative, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said on Nov. 1.
Presented this May, the "East Shield" program aims to fortify Poland's borders with Belarus, and the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad. It includes a mix of new physical barriers, modern surveillance systems, and infrastructure development.
The program is part of NATO’s eastern flank joint regional defense infrastructure plan that Poland is carrying out with Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia.
Warsaw allocated a total of 10 billion złoty ($2.5 billion) to strengthen the borders with Russia and Belarus to deter aggression.
"This is the largest operation to strengthen Poland’s eastern border, NATO’s eastern flank, since 1945," Polish Defense Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz said in spring.
Kaliningrad Oblast is a small piece of land measuring 15,100 square kilometers — not much larger than the U.S. state of Connecticut — sandwiched between Poland and Lithuania. It has a short, western coastline on the Baltic Sea. Its capital is also called Kaliningrad.
Though it may be small, strategically it gives Russia a second point of direct access to the Baltic Sea, the other being through its most eastern arm in the Finnish Gulf.
Russia's Baltic Sea Fleet has its headquarters and main base in Kaliningrad Oblast.
The Suwalki Gap is the closest point between Kaliningrad Oblast, and one of Russia's staunchest allies, Belarus.
It's a mere 40 kilometers wide and closely tracks the Poland-Lithuania border on the Polish side.
In the event of a war between NATO and Russia, Russian and Belarusian forces linking up across the Suwalki Gap would cut off the only land route to all three Baltic States.
In May, Tusk said that Poland had begun strengthening its entire eastern border with Belarus due to a growing "hybrid war" and illegal migration.
Warsaw for several years accused Belarus of deliberately pushing migrants into Poland in order to pressure the EU over sanctions, a charge Minsk has denied.
Russia's invasion of Ukraine has sparked concerns that the Baltic states, which are among Moscow's biggest critics and Kyiv's staunchest allies since day one of the all-out war, could become the next target for aggression.
These fears are reinforced by Russian leader Vladimir Putin's repeated threats to NATO countries.

Polish Defense Spending to Hit 4.7% of GDP by 2025 | Gen. Jarosław Kraszewski
Poland's largest defense expo is underway in Kielce, with over 750 companies displaying cutting-edge military technology. Notably, Poland is increasing its defense budget to 4.7% of its GDP by next year. Amid the signing of major contracts, including an airport protection system from a Spanish firm, there’s also a push to develop domestic production, such as a planned ammunition factory. Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz has also emphasized the need for "precise" contracts, including ongoing negotiations for more K2 tanks from South Korea. General Jarosław Kraszewski, former Director of the Armed Forces Supervision Department at the Polish National Security Bureau, joined us today on TVP World to discuss these developments.
P.S. The Poles have made a very correct decision! Glad to hear: "Poland is increasing its defence budget to 4.7% of its GDP". Considering the high level of political corruption in the West and the extent to which Russian spies and agents of influence have infiltrated Western societies, Western security "guarantees" and "international laws" cannot be relied upon at all: 1) The Russian imperialists would never have started the war against Ukraine if Western capital, specifically German, French, Dutch, American and all other businessmen, had not invested huge funds in the Russian economy and in the restoration of the Russian military potential (the Russians obtained the military technology they lacked, both directly and indirectly, the West donated for the Russians possibility to steal Western military technology secrets without hindrance); 2) The West significantly reduced the military potential of Western European countries and CATEGORICALLY REFUSED TO INCREASE the defense of Eastern Europe and the Baltic regions at leas since 2006. Even when the Russian invasion of Georgia began in Europe in August 2008, the West pretended that nothing was happening...;
Even more, Western politicians started pushing the idea that NATO is no longer needed, the Western fiasco in Syria, and the West went so far in an absurd situation that they even started talking about giving the Russians a "sphere of influence" in Europe...it must be allowed to attack Ukraine and the Baltic States without hindrance. A. Merkel's German policy in relations with Russia was a particularly big shame for Western politicians, and of course the political circus organized by Donald Trump in America.... It is such a shame that there are no words to describe it... Of course, the Kremlin and Beijing saw all this activity of the Western useful idiots very well... the Russian army, together with Iran, entered Syria without interference, continued attacks in Ukraine, Beijing is becoming more and more aggressive, and this is only thanks to the useful idiots of the West, who have betrayed absolutely all the West's civilization values....

WARSAW, Poland (AP) — NATO member Poland paid tribute Thursday to its historic victory over the Red Army by honoring fallen Poles and showing off modern tanks and other equipment that it hopes will deter the threat it sees in modern-day Russia.
A parade featuring Polish troops joined by some U.S. and other allied soldiers took place in Warsaw, the Polish capital, on the Armed Forces holiday, with tanks rolling down a major riverside thoroughfare and fighter jets flying overhead as thousands of waving people watched on.
“We must arm ourselves and build such potential that no one will ever dare to attack us,” President Andrzej Duda said ahead of the parade, the culmination of state commemorations.
Some of Poland’s new weapons have replaced Soviet- and Russian-made equipment sent to neighboring Ukraine after Russia launched its full-scale invasion of its democratic neighbor in 2022. Since Poland broke free of Moscow’s control 35 years ago and then joined NATO, it has worked to modernize its army.
Those efforts moved into higher gear after Russia under President Vladimir Putin first invaded Ukraine in 2014, and then again in 2022, with fears heightened all along the strategic stretch of NATO’s eastern flank — from the Baltic nations to Poland to Romania.
“Muscovites always threatened the peace here,” said Radoslaw Prokop, a 49-year-old who watched the parade. “For hundreds of years.”
U.S., British and Romanian soldiers riding in tanks with their national flags waving joined their Polish allies.
Jacek Szelenbaum, a 60-year-old truck driver, was among the thousands of spectators. His grandfather was forced to serve in a mounted infantry division of the Russian czar in the early 20th century, the waning years of a long Russian occupation over Warsaw and the surrounding region of Poland.
He said he realizes the parade is mostly for show but is still encouraged when he sees the military having more modern weaponry as the years go by.
“We feel a bit better because we see this good equipment, and we feel the presence of our allies, Americans, British, Romanian and others,” Szelenbaum said. “It’s necessary in this situation because Poland could never defend itself alone. Only in an alliance can we manage against Putin.”
The holiday falls on the anniversary of the 1920 Battle of Warsaw, in which Polish troops defeated Russian Bolshevik forces advancing on Europe, halting their western march.
The war in Ukraine has reminded Poland of the enduring threat it has long faced on the flat plains of central Europe wedged between larger, more powerful — and often aggressive — neighbors.
Even membership in NATO has not eased the sense of threat after Russia’s attack on Ukraine and a migration crisis that erupted in 2021 along Poland’s border with Belarus. Warsaw saw a sudden surge that year in large-scale migration from the Middle East and Africa as a form of hybrid warfare organized by Moscow and Minsk.
Polish Defense Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz wrote a letter to soldiers saying the holiday is a reminder of “the most glorious episodes of the Polish army, of the price of independence and freedom.”
“On this day, we pay tribute to all the heroes who fought for the homeland from the dawn of our country,” he added.
Russia’s war against neighboring Ukraine and the Poland-Belarus border crisis have led many Poles to fear what the Kremlin might do next, should it succeed in Ukraine.
Poland signed a $10 billion deal earlier this week with the U.S. government for 96 Apache attack helicopters.
Kosiniak-Kamysz said the Apaches, with their modern technology, mark a milestone for Poland’s efforts to modernize its military, and would allow Abrams tanks and F-35 aircraft to be used to their full capacities.

New NATO chief Rutte makes support for Ukraine top priority
New NATO chief Mark Rutte pledged to boost support for war-torn Ukraine when he headed the alliance, according to The Independent.
We have to make sure that Ukraine prevails as a sovereign, independent, democratic nation.
The former Dutch prime minister officially succeeded Jens Stoltenberg as NATO secretary general on Tuesday. His appointment came at an important moment for NATO, with the US election just weeks away.
The secretary-general said during a press conference on Tuesday that he could work with either Donald Trump or Kamala Harris and appreciated that Ukraine would be his top priority.
“I will be able to work with both. Whatever is the outcome of the election.”
Rutte, 57, was prime minister of the Netherlands until he resigned earlier this year following the collapse of his coalition government in 2023. He was appointed to lead NATO in June.
The cost of supporting Ukraine is far, far lower than the cost we would face if we allow Putin to get his way.
One of Rutte’s key tasks will be to persuade NATO members to commit additional troops, weapons and spending to strengthen the alliance’s collective defence.
“We need to do more in terms of our collective defence and deterrence. We have to invest more and close the capability gaps and try to achieve all the targets NATO has set here.”
Military aid at risk
However, Ukraine’s allies are struggling financially, jeopardising further shipments of money and weapons, according to Bloomberg. People familiar with the matter said some even refused to increase funding to help Kyiv.
Much of Ukraine’s military aid for 2025 is tied to a G7 deal to provide $50 billion in loans from the profits of frozen Russian central bank assets. However, even if an agreement is reached, the $50 billion is still not enough to meet Ukraine’s needs for another year of war, military analysts warned.
Meanwhile, Polish Defence Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz called Ukraine an ungrateful recipient of military aid.
There is no memory of this aid from Ukraine’s side.
Kosiniak-Kamysz argued that the first Ukrainian statements were very ambitious and the number of Ukrainians who were supposed to apply to join the special brigade in Poland was too small. Aid to Ukraine amounted to 3.3 per cent of Poland’s GDP or 100 billion zlotys ($26 billion). This included humanitarian aid and military supplies, which reached $5bn.

URGENT HELP🚨🚨🚨🍉🇵🇸
Hello,
How do you do ? I hop to be in a good condition.
This is my special campaign
We hope to help us by donating or sharing to others.
Every donation makes a different even if it a small.
As you know, the war began on October 7 and lasted ten months. During this period, we were unable to obtain food, drink, or treatment because we did not have money.
There is no source of income for the family at the present time, so we are unable to buy food, clean water, and medicine, especially after we are afflicted with the ongoing infectious diseases spread in the north like Hepatitis C disease.
Our house has been damaged a lot since the beginning of the war. We are from the north of Gaza and we are still in the north and have not displaced to the south. We displaced 10 times from place to another seeking to safety .
We hope for your help and support, even if only a little.🙏🙏

Thank you all
Flooding hit the southwestern Polish city of Wroclaw on Thursday after days of torrential rain that have seen rivers bursting their banks in Poland, Austria, Czechia and Romania, leaving seven dead in Poland.
The Defense Ministry said 10,000 soldiers have been drafted in to help combat the floods, build defenses and provide aid.
Defense Minister Wladysław Kosiniak-Kamysz allocated 500 military police to work with an additional 500 police officers to secure evacuated areas from looting.
Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced a state of natural disaster in the flooded areas on Sept. 18, while European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, arrived Thursday in Wroclaw to assess the aftermath.
Tusk also said a relief fund for victims will be doubled and the finance minister informed him that €468 million in total has been made available for the relief fund. Tusk said the total losses could amount to several billion zlotys.
Finance Minister Andrzej Domanski told a crisis meeting in Wroclaw that the government would pay installments of mortgages for those whose houses had been flooded. Damage from Storm Boris in Poland could total 1% of the country’s economic output, or $9 billion. Highways are so far unaffected, with more disturbance to local roads.
Tusk welcomed the news that Poland would receive financial help from the EU.
“I will be urging other countries that have also been affected by the floods to join us in pressing the European Commission firmly,” he said. Tusk raised concerns about reports of rising prices for essential items such as rubber boots and gloves in areas affected.

In our country, after the elections in October, an opposition coalition composed of three parties will rule, and it became a meme when Mr. Czarzasty (the one in the red sweater) looks at the coalition partners from the other party, Mr. Kosiniak-Kamysz and Mr. Hołownia, it's like a beautiful bromance, after years of dictatorship in our country and it's fucking beautiful
just look at them
He loves them. He loves them so much. And I'm here for it. Oh my God plz 😭😭😭

WARSAW, Oct 17 (Reuters) - Poland's opposition parties led by Donald Tusk's Civic Coalition (KO) prepared for coalition talks on Tuesday after official results from Sunday's election showed they had won enough seats to oust the ruling nationalist Law and Justice (PiS) party.
A new government led by pro-EU centrists will mark a massive shift in Poland after eight years of conflict between PiS and Brussels over democratic standards, media freedom, minority rights and migration.
"In the coming days, after the (final) results are announced, we will talk," said Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz, a leader of the centre-right Third Way, which along with the New Left is expected to join a KO-led coalition.
The Electoral Commission confirmed on Tuesday that PiS remained the largest party in the lower house of parliament, the Sejm, after winning 35.38% of the vote. This would give it around 190 seats in the 460-seat chamber.
Tusk's KO won 30.70% of the vote. Third Way took third place with 14.40% and the New Left had 8.61%, the Commission said. The far-right Confederation won 7.16% of the vote.
KO, the Third Way and the New Left, combined, will have around 250 seats, the results suggested, enough for them to form a stable coalition government.
However, that prospect could still be weeks, if not months, away. President Andrzej Duda, a PiS ally, said before the vote that he would give the first shot at forming a cabinet to the group or party that won most ballots.
With no party indicating a willingness to join a PiS-led government, the nationalist party led by Jaroslaw Kaczynski seems unlikely to be able to secure a third term at the helm of the European Union's largest eastern member state.
"Evil has prevailed in Poland, temporarily," Marek Suski, a senior PiS official, told public broadcaster TVP. "PiS is likely moving into a really democratic opposition."
MASS MOBILISATION
Turnout in Sunday's election exceeded 74%, the highest in Poland since the collapse of communism in 1989, after the parties managed to galvanise large numbers of especially younger voters for the first time.
But the election campaign was marred by harsh, divisive rhetoric, reflecting deep polarisation within Polish society.
Vowing to protect Polish borders and sovereignty, PiS cast the vote as a fight against unfettered migration and against unwarranted interference in national life by remote, unelected EU bureaucrats.
Opposition leaders including Tusk, a former European Council president, said PiS would take Poland out of the EU if it won a third term - a charge denied by the ruling party despite its constant legal and political feuds with Brussels.
The opposition parties have yet to name a candidate for the post of prime minister but Tusk, 66, is widely expected to be their nominee. He served as premier from 2007 to 2014.
"Nobody doubts today that without Donald Tusk's energy and determination, change in Poland would not have been possible," Marcin Kierwinski, a senior KO official, told Polsat News broadcaster.
Still, the three parties are likely to face complex talks over issues such as abortion and LGBT rights.
On abortion, Kosiniak-Kamysz of Third Way said on Tuesday his party would support reversing a 2021 near-total ban on terminations by reinstating the right to abortion in cases of fetal defects, but would not agree upfront to further liberalisation.
KO and the New Left also want to allow abortions up to 12 weeks without limitations. Third Way wants Poles to decide the matter in a referendum.
"No ideological issues can be part of any coalition agreement," Kosiniak-Kamysz said.
