Now it's time for best girl, Kaltenecker is a cow that is gifted to Lance and Pidge in the Space Mall after they buy a videogame.

When Pidge presents her to Matt she says this

This means she sees Kaltenecker as sort of a team's pet. But we have confirmation that Lance is her primary (and maybe only) caretaker.

Since Hunk admits he doesn't like to deal with her, the alteans don't know what she is and we dont have mentions of Pidge, Shiro or Keith tending to her.

The person the alteans seek for help to "reason" with Kaltenecker and get milkshakes was Lance

And I really love this silly expression here, feels very "fuck yes, Mom is getting us ice cream"

Lance then proceeds to explain the alteans things about Kaltenecker and teaches them how they can get the milk for their beloved milkshakes.

They end up a bit shaken and leave the place, and Lance then says this:

Something very reminiscent to what a parent would say to a young girl to reassure her.

Kaltenecker may not be referred as his cow but its clear Lance is the most fond of her, being the one who milks her and probably knows how to take care of her thanks to being raised in a family farm according to some interviews.

But, we also have the strange detail that, on Kaltenecker's first appearance, Lance refers to her as a boy.

This very well may be a mistake from the writers but, this opens the possibility that, in the show, Lance didn't exactly know a lot about cows and was the one taking initiative on researching how to take care of one, or Pidge just told him and he is the one who took on the duty.

At the end, I think it's telling that it wasn't the most responsible members of the team (Shiro or Allura both probably didn't know what to do with her) or Hunk or Coran, but Lance who took a look at an Earth being far from home and decided to take care of her and also grew to be fond of.

Lance's family

We are close to the end and I know Lance is, obviously be very caring with his own family, while in Space he was the one to talk the most about being homesick and missing his family. Even snapping at Hunk when he was joking about Lance's message for Earth being for a crush instead of for them.

Sadly we don't see a lot of Lance interacting with his family once we return to Earth, but there is a family member who is active in the Garrison.

She and Lance seem to be the only ones enlisted in the Garrison. So it's very likely that they are really close, in fact, when Lance returns to Earth, after Sylvio and Nadia, Veronica is the first one to go run to embrace him.

So of course Lance already being naturally protective, would be worried about his sister going on missions with them.

But being stubborn seems to be a family trait and Veronica doesn't doubt on going on this missions to help her home.

And I want to make a little parenthesis here, because I have seen some people make the point that Lance just doesn't trust the capabilities of the women around him, and I can't lie, that feels like a bad faith reading of what's happening. Lance constantly praises the women in his life, be it Pidge's technological abilities and intelligence, Allura's strenght, power and morals and clearly loves his sister and thinks highly of her, its just that, in his own words he doesn't like to see his loved ones in danger.

I like the idea of Lance being a farmer but not in the "my girlfriend died and instead of getting over her, I'll devote my life to planting her little invasive flowers :(" way.

I believe that Lance would take Kaltenecker because nobody else would. He likes to joke that Keith should go back to his roots and become a cowboy (take Kaltenecker out to graze). This is just the start.

The (totally legal amount of) chickens come next. He only has hens because he already has Keith and he's the only territorial bird brain with a stupid hairdo that Lance needs (💕). He gets fresh eggs from the chickens and prides himself on being the guy that everyone gets eggs from.

Then comes the garden. Nothing big. Just some tomatoes. And peppers. And maybe some strawberries. If the squirrels don't eat them. He really enjoys being able to use what he makes. He does not enjoy when Keith eats his tomatoes like apples.

When he goes into space, he has Adam, Shiro, or Hunk take care of his animals and plants because she (Pidge) will accidentally kill something if it's made her responsibility.

Voltron: another plothole found! Ownership of Kaltenecker the cow!

Ok ok ok hear me out!

Kaltenecker is a cow that team voltron got from the alien who owns the human item store at the space mall.

If you’ll notice, Kaltenecker has a brand on her indicating that she is owned by the person that brand belongs to.

Typically cattle ranchers brand their cows to show that those cows belong to them, just in case that cow happens to wander into another cattle rancher’s pasture and get mixed in with their cows. The brand keeps ranchers from claiming ownership over cows that aren’t theirs.

Kaltenecker came from earth. Which means she had to have belonged to a cattle rancher before she came to be owned by that alien shopkeeper.

Later on in the series team Voltron return to earth and at the end of the series, Kaltenecker lives on lance’s family farm.

Kaltenecker was stolen from the original owner by the alien shopkeeper. That shopkeeper gave Kaltenecker away to lance and pidge free with their purchase of the game system. Now Lance is the owner of a stolen cow.

If the original owner of Kaltenecker happens to notice that brand and confronts Lance’s family on the cow. Will Lance and his family have to return Kaltenecker to her original owner?

What is the rules of ownership when it comes to stolen property?

Is the original owner even still alive after the galra invasion?

Does Lance have to give back the cow?

Who is the rightful owner of Kaltenecker?

If I know anything about the law when it comes to stolen property, chances are, Lance will have to give back the cow.

If that is the case, Lance and his family might get accused of stealing the cow or be charged with possession of stolen property.

To avoid this problem, they could try to track down the owner, talk to them and explain what actually happened and then offer to buy Kaltenecker from them. That way there is no issues, no lawsuits, no criminal charges. Everyone is happy.

Fic Update: Missing, Chapter 6

Summary:

Lance isn’t sure he’s ever felt this tired before. It’s not just from the lack of sleep. It’s not just because of the near endless list of chores he does because everyone else has far more important things to do and he should try to pull his weight where he can. And it’s not entirely from the heavy disappointment that seems to emanate from Shiro every time he looks at Lance knowing that Lance doesn’t measure up as Red Paladin no matter how hard he tries. But all of those things together (although is he missing one? He’s so tired, it’s hard to focus) are heavy and exhausting and Lance is tired.

So, so tired.

Chapter 6 snippet:

“Ouch!” Lance yelped as Kaltenecker’s blunted teeth latched onto his hair and pulled in a way that was far more aggressive than her normally gentle nibbling affection and he nearly knocked the milk pail over as he flailed his hands upwards to push away at the cow’s mouth. “Kaltenecker!”

The cow released his hair with a low groan that did not sound happy even as she swung her head back around to face front.

Lance brought one hand up to rub at his tingling scalp and turned his attention to the milk pail.

That was overflowing.

And Kaltenecker’s udders were no longer wet with milk.

His eyes widened as the pieces clicked.

How…

How long had he been milking her when she hadn’t needed him to?

How much had that hurt?

He stumbled to his feet, apologies falling from his lips.

“I’m so sorry, I’m so sorry girl,” he pulled her face into his hands, one going beneath her chin to scratch her favorite spot, “I didn’t meant to hurt you.”

Kaltenecker lowed and a rough tongue licked his wrist, her big eyes gentle and no grudge in them.

It was already behind her.

But it wasn’t behind Lance.
