Necessary Changes
Words: 1189
For: @skykashi
Arguing with Koharu and Homura was an endless, exhausting task. As a Jonin Kakashi learned to pick and choose his fights carefully because the two elder’s were exceptionally skilled at wearing down their opponents. He’d seen shinobi older and more experienced than him cave to the elder’s demands, including Lord third.
He never gave up because he didn’t genuinely care about the argument, but because he ran out of energy to fight for his cause any longer. There had been many times growing up that he wished he’d had more power because it seemed like the only way that he would have the power to shut the elders up. Now, Kakashi had that power. He may not have wanted it when he first took the position of Hokage from Tsunade-sama, but Kakashi couldn’t deny the fact that he finally had a power he’d never had before.
“Shut up.” he groaned as he rubbed his forefinger against his temple in an attempt to will away the headache he could feel creeping up on him with every word the two elder’s said.
Koharu gasped, acting as though this was the first time in her life that a Hokage had told her to silence herself.
“Lord Sixth-” Homura began, only silencing himself when Kakashi glared his way.
If it were anyone else Kakashi would insist that they drop the ‘Lord’. It was an honorific meant to refer to those who had earned other people’s respect. People like Tsunade and Jiraiya had earned the right to be referred to using that honorific, but not Kakashi.
He was just Kakashi. Nothing else.
In this instance, though, he was willing to let it slide. If the two elder’s were going to insist on arguing with them he was going to allow them to remind themselves of just who it was they were trying to pick a fight with.
This wasn’t a fresh faced Jonin Kakashi arguing for a change in his team selection for a mission because he knew he could do the job better with Rin and Gai at his side.
It wasn’t Anbu Kakashi who was so broken and lost that he barely had a back bone to hold himself up let alone argue with the elder’s.
The two of them weren’t picking a fight with someone they still out ranked. No, today they were picking a fight with Hokage Kakashi. A man who’d never wanted the responsibility of taking care of an entire village, but who’d come into the job determined to make changes to the system that had taken so much from him.
“This is not up for discussion,” he lowered his hand onto the desk. “You can tell me how much you hate what I'm doing but I’ve already signed the paperwork and begun the process of retraining Konoha’s shinobi.”
“This is ridiculous,” Koharu straightened herself up, recovering from the shock of being told off. “Konoha is a village of shinobi. It is our job-”
tilting his head, Kakashi stared at her until . “Not ours,” Kakashi corrected her. “You two are no longer active shinobi. You have not been on a mission in over thirty years. If I could remove you from your positions I would but unfortunately even the Hokage does not have that power.” He’d checked and Tsunade had just sighed and shook her head. If there was anyone in Konoha who understood his desire to get rid of the elder’s it was her. “And in the past you would have been correct. When you were shinobi Konoha was in the midst of war. Killing our enemies may have been the only option. That’s not the case anymore.”
It couldn’t be. He wouldn’t allow the next generation to suffer through the guilt and regret that he had.
“Lord Sixth, you must see reason on this,” Homura continued to argue. “To change something so engrained into our society is foolish. Konoha’s shinobi are used to the way things are. They won’t change just because you ask them to.”
‘They won’t change that easily’ Tsunade-sama’s words echoed back to him. She’d been the first person he’d spoken to of his decision. Someone he could speak to who would tell him honestly what she thought and whether or not he should move forward. When he’d heard those words from her he’d prepared himself to give up on a better future, but then she continued speaking. ‘Then, of course, nothing that’s worth fighting for is ever easy’
Kakashi had a choice to make as Hokage. Which fights were the one’s he was willing to pick, and how far was he willing to dig his heels in and stand his ground?
For this one, the answer was simple to find.
No matter what anyone else said, or how much they fought him, he would stand his ground. This was a change that had to be made and there was no one in the village who would be able to stop him.
“They will learn,” he spoke calmly, keeping his voice steady even though he wanted to scream. “I don’t expect it to be an easy transition for anyone. There will be struggles and we will have to learn new methods.” the inclusion of ‘we’ was deliberate. Kakashi knew that it wouldn’t be just the shinobi under his command who would struggle with the new rule.
He had been raised to be a killer. Molded into the perfect ideal of a shinobi, ready to take a life at a moment’s notice. His hands were stained with the blood of countless enemy shinobi.
Learning to capture rather than kill would be just as much of a struggle for him, but it was something he was willing to put himself through so that the shinobi of Konoha knew he was serious about this change.
“Now,” focusing back on the pair in front of him, he narrowed his eyes. “This conversation is done. I will not hear another word about it so unless you have something else to speak with me about I would suggest you leave. I still have a lot of paperwork to finish before my day ends.”
Homura opened his mouth but quickly rethought whatever it was he wanted to say and instead turned his back to Kakashi with a huff.
“I hope you know what you’re doing, Lord Sixth,” Koharu sighed as she copied her friend’s movements, sparing Kakashi a glance over her shoulder. “The Hokage’s before you went through a lot to set the village up as it is. What you’re doing is dismantling all of that work.”
“Perhaps,” he sat back in his chair. “But they set up the village for war. I want this village to thrive and grow in ways they never could have imagined.”
He didn’t need to be known as the best Hokage Konoha had ever had. In fact, he’d resigned himself to being known as the worst Hokage in history as soon as he’d taken the seat and he was still prepared to take that title.
If being the worst meant pushing his village into a brighter, more hopeful future, he would happily wear that title.

#maito gai#gai's birthday bash 2023#might guy#gai#naruto#boruto#naruto polls#flower crown help#flower crown#flowers#can you guess which prompt this is for lol#i didn't look up flower meanings bc i think that's culturally bound#instead i looked up which flowers grow in january (which is based on hemisphere but oh well)#so the last three are the only non winter flowers but they seem popular enough to include#i like the idea of peonies or camellias with a daffodil and snowdrop but that's too ambitious for me#perfect for Gai tho#he deserves all the ambitious love#:3

continuing here because tumblr apparently has a limit on the amout of pics you can attach to one post lol
the scroll in question btw is the shadow clones jutsu. you know, the one that everyone and their mom spams constantly. god I love Naruto being written backwards.
Also why is there a bunch of Suna looking guys? And I guess it's Kakashi to the right, with his hands in pockets?
wait WHY THE FUCK DID YOU START THE SEARCH PARTY HALF A DAY AFTER NARUTO STOLE IT??? WTF ARE YOU DOING HIRUZEN? HOW FUCKING USELESS ARE YOU?????
jesus christ you know Kushina is gonna woop his sorry ass in Pure Lands, like Hiruzen fucking sucks at everything lmao
goofy ahh ahh typeset🤣 in my experience it really is just better to leave the japanese sound effects in place and just add smaller sound effects in your target language
naaah, no way. i don't even remember how Kishi later explains everyone knowing that Naruto's got the beast inside himself (I think it was supposed to be Danzo leaking it or something as stupid?), but no decree would make everyone in a GIGANTIC VILLAGE (and Konoha, as far as I remember, is the biggest one in terms of population according to the databooks?) shut up about this juicy piece of info, like, someone would have slipped up over what, like 9-10 years since Naruto could remember himself? Yeah, so Naruto should have learned about Kurama much earlier.
This is👆as idiotic as the secret behind Naruto's parents, lol, really, who could have produced this little guy who looks exactly like our previous Hokage and speaks a lot like the only Uzumaki woman in the village? Both of whom happened to die exactly on little bro's birthday? Truly a mystery for ages.
Yeaaaaaah, so the plot becomes an outright mess here in terms of contradicting later information lol. I believe it's because the original concept behind Naruto was the he is the demon fox who got sealed and took the appearance of the man who sealed him (meaning Minato), which is why Mizuki is trying to put the blame for the Nine-Tails incident on a literal newborn baby.
HUH
Mizuki, don't be freaky.
okay, Choji's dad, chill out, please.
Also gotta love everyone losing their shit and running after our little special boy Sasuke when the kid chose to become a terrorist vs Naruto stole some scroll? LET'S FUCKING KILL HIM.
Gosh golly it sure will be terrible if we were to try and save someone's parents ACTUAL murderer, right, Naruto?
(expect a lot of canon Obito bashing too lol, guy's the biggest loser and warps plot around himself simply by existing lol)
honestly should've kept the boots, I understand having sandals in the village, but somewhere in battle, in the wild... eugh, don't even wanna think about how many toes got hurt. but foot fetish gotta foot fetish, i guess.
also loling at "wasn't a ninja manga at all, but just about magic". don't worry, Kishi of the past, Kishi of the future will somehow make this manga about aliens. not sure what the editor was doing in meantime, though.
ah shit here we go again, let's reread Naruto again
reading it in official English translation for the first time and really have no idea if it's good or not lol (I've been translating MHA for 5 years straight and official English translation from the same company fucking sucks)
chapter 1 is huge as hell, which is normal for Shonen Jump, mangaka needs to introduce the concept and characters and all yada yada
what I find really funny about Naruto is a lot of the stuff is written backwards (meaning, we have some stuff introduced early on, but then more shit is slapped on top) to the point that pre-Shippuden things directly contradict what is going to be stated later. Kishimoto most of the time gave approximately zero shit about things outright not making sense and, y'know, you gotta respect him for that, cause I don't have balls like that
(unfortunately when writing anything canon-compliant in Naruto you have be mindful of things being rewritten and outright not making sense💀)
Anyway enough yapping, very first page is already ripe with shit that is going to be retconneced later
Firstly, description of Kurama's abilities. Naruto's orange puppy certainly can not start tsunamis and landslides with just his tails, lmao, this is something closer to Ten-Tails. If the terrain allows it, sure, I can see him starting a landslide, but orange puppy isn't starting anything in the seas, he's got siblings with lesser number of tails for that haha.
Secondly, the entire second paragraph feels like a fever dream honestly. "Suffering people gathered the shinobi clans to fight this menace" = Konoha was founded as a way to stop the endless tiny conflicts between the shinobi clans living in the Land of Fire (why have small-scale conflicts between each other when you can have literal world wars with the guys from beyond the border lol, jk, I know Hashirama wanted a peaceful future for the kids, but ultimately hidden villages system solves none of the issues of the previous system besides "7 year olds die on the battlefields" because now we have "15 year olds die on the battlefields"), Kurama literally wanted nothing to do with humans (as far as we know) during the warring states period, he was literally frolicking in some meadows and eating weird twins from to-be Kumogakure, got captured by Uchiha "read some mossy stone that my clan carried for years for some reason and went totally delulu" Madara, was used to attack Konoha, got bitch slapped by Hashirama a few times before Mito stuffed him into her stomach. And people are surprised why is the orange puppy so evil most of the manga lmao. But anyway, the entire sentence also implies that Fourth Hokage had some sort of mega-epic showdown with the evil puppy... while in reality it was something closer to Konoha's nuke being stolen by a delusional angry fourteen year old and Minato had to simply recapture the nuke again.
anyway, that was a long-ass rant lol
love the early style, it's so goofy, Kakashi is especially wonky in it
first question: why are we tying up school kids after they are caught for their terrible pranks? what is the educational idea behind this thing? like, i get doing that on the training field, imitating combat and all, but why do the same thing in the classroom? is it supposed to encourage the kids to learn how to run away after being tied down by some ropes?
(if that's the case i guess i know at least one academy student who always failed this task, yeah, looking at you, rin, i'm sorry, i can't hold myself back from bashing that thing, lmao)
anyway, back to the manga, i really love how it mentions that Naruto flunked this exam two times already (and it's not stated how often this exam is, so I guess yearly?), and only graduates at like 13, which is supposed to be a super late age and Naruto is such a lazy bum for that... but then you realize the funny fact that Naruto's classmates aka "genius" Sasuke, "book-smart" Sakura, team Asuma and team Kurenai are all the same age as him. Lmao. This isn't the first time Kishi will forget about this silly thing called "timeline".
let's... not adress this gag.
AHAHHAHAHHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAH.
Naruto, allow me to introduce you to this wonderful concept called "nepotism". It's quite common in your village. Second Hokage was First's younger brother, Third Hokage was the student of the Second, Fourth Hokage is the student of a guy who studied under Third, Fifth is literally both the granddaughter of First and a student of Third, Sixth is the student of Fourth and you, Naruto, is the son of Fourth and the student of Sixth.
I absolutely love how early Naruto is trying to be this story about this poor underdog when in reality our MC is the nepobaby to ever napobaby lol. I think only Iwa beats Konoha at having the most absurdly nepotistic system for Kage, because 3 out of 4 Tsuchikage are directly related to each other through blood and the one guy that isn't happens to be the teacher to Third.
(I do remember there was so bullshit about Kazekage clan or something but I think it's pretty much only a title and only Rasa and Gaara are actually related to each other through blood)
>badge of adulthood
>given to literal 9-13 year olds who can't throw a kunai in a straight line
yeah, you know what, this actually checks out.
you immediately know that mizuki is fucking evil when he says "nah let him pass iruka, he managed to produce a single shitty clone, he's totally not gonna be killed after 30 seconds on the battlefield" like WHAT IS THIS SYSTEM OF EDUCATION
also another good question to the world building: does Konoha have other schools besides Academy? Like, what do kids do if they don't want to pursue military career? Their parents hopefully teach them how to read and count and that's it? I mean, Konoha is a military settlement at the end of the day, but they can't be teaching only guys who will be throwing knives at each other?
absolutely nothing, naruto, lmao. you were born a nepobaby, prepare to have an endless supply of chakra for any tricks of yours and the best senseis Konoha has to offer.
is the Hokage building supposed to be their residence as well? huh.
also let's not talk about this gag.

pairing: kakashi x f!y/n
a/n: it's midnight where I'm from so it's officially my birthday (feb 25th) “🥳“🥳
“Y/N…Y/N…Wake up, Y/N.”
Y/N’s sleeping face scrunches up at the sound of her husband’s voice gently calling her name, pulling her out of her comfortable slumber.
“Mmm…Five more minutes.” Y/N grumbles sleepily and turns away from Kakashi in hopes his voice wouldn’t reach her ears.
Kakashi chuckles at his wife’s adorableness before mockingly sighing in a dramatic way, “I didn’t want to resort to this.” He says, “But you leave me with no choice.”
Before Y/N could process what Kakashi had uttered, his long fingers are instantly on her and mercilessly tickles her.
“Ka…Ka-Kashi!!” Y/N sequels her name in a fit of giggles, desperately wiggling her body away from his wiggling fingers. When she jumps out of bed, Kakashi grins in triumph.
Y/N glares at him but there isn’t any heat, she fights the urge to smile at her husband, wanting to show that she is very upset. But her resolve shatters within seconds and she is soon giggling, Kakashi joining.
Running her fingers through her locks to tame her hair, Y/N asks, “So, may I know why the hell you decided to wake me up at-” She glances at the clock on the wall across from their shared bed, “Eight in the morning on our very rare day off?”
Kakashi musters up a serious expression which in turn makes Y/N snort because she could see the amusement twinkling in his eyes. It reminds her of when she invites Naruto to an all you can eat ramen day for his birthday.
“Close your eyes for me.”
Playfully sighing, Y/N does as told and plays along to whatever plan Kakashi has concocted. Shortly afterwards, she feels his scarred fingers covering her eyes.
“I won’t peek.”
She feels a rush of cool breath fanning the back of her neck before hearing Kakashi’s giggle, “Not risking it.” Is all he says.
Y/N rolls her eyes behind her closed eyelids but lets Kakashi take the lead in directing her out of their bedroom and into their kitchen space.
“Ready?” Kakashi asks.
“Ready.”
Kakashi slides his fingers away from Y/N and quickly goes to stand next to the table, wanting to see her reaction.
“Okay, you can open your eyes now.”
Opening her eyes, Y/N is surprised to see the state of the kitchen.
There are baby pink and purple balloons; some stuck to the ceiling while a few were littered across the floor. There’s a white banner stuck to the cabinets and in pink cursive, Happy Birthday Y/N! Was written on it. The exclamation point has a heart on the bottom instead of it’s typical dot.
On the table, it’s set with their finest china (by finest china I mean plates that weren’t made out of plastic) and silverware. In the center, there’s a basket filled with croissants stuffed with all sorts of jam, mini brioche and mini vanilla muffins. On each plate there’s a warm cheese danish and a tall glass of mango juice next to them.
“Oh, Kakashi.” Y/N coos in disbelief, “When did you do all of this?” She looks up and into the eyes of her bashful husband.
Kakashi rubs the back of his neck. And despite being married for five years, he still blushes when Y/N looks at him with so much love in her eyes, love that he believes he doesn’t deserve despite her constantly reassuring him.
“I woke up early.” Kakashi says nonchalantly, eyes looking everywhere but at her.
Y/N’s lips curl upwards in a smile and walk to where Kakashi is standing. She wraps her arms around his neck, trapping him in place. She stands on her tip toes and pecks his lips once, twice and thrice before Kakashi presses his lips to hers and deepens the kiss.
They break the kiss with identical smiles.
“Happy birthday, Y/N.”

For your birthday bash, perhaps a cute Sayuri meeting Kakashi’s mom Yua ficlet? Just, Sayuri processing that Kakashi’s mother is a Samurai from the land of Iron and how the two of them get on??
Hello dear Taryn! It is your turn! :D I enjoyed exploring this relationship quite a lot. I think Yua would be very supportive of such a burned child <3 Thank you for letting me write that.
This is the Role Reversal AU, based on this story I've written for OC Shipweek
Mention of Kakashi x OC (well duh)
2421 words.
mention of past child abuse.
Pakkun jumped up on the little patio Yua was sitting on and sharpening her knife. She let the little dog walk over and sit right in front of her to deliver the message Yua already knew he was going to deliver. She didn’t know why Kakashi still felt like he needed to announce where he was going and when he was coming back, now that he was very much grown into full adult age, but she never complained.
“Boss is coming back”, the little dog barked as information. Yua moved her arm to pet him behind his ears. She nodded knowingly. “He isn’t coming alone” Pakkun added and that truly was new information.
She put her knife down and looked interested at the animal: “Who?” If Pakkun could shrug his shoulders, he probably would have: “Haven’t smelled her in a while, but now he smells all over like her.”
Yua immediately thought of the soulmate sign on his wrist he had told her about long ago. The name that was written on it of which he had been so insistent that it was not the Sayuri he’d known as a child, but that it could be any Sayuri since naming your kid after a flower wasn’t as uncommon - maybe something he had told himself for his own sanity. Kakashi had been nervous about meeting his old comrades again, the ones he had run away from in his early teens, no matter how often his mother had told him that they probably understood his decision.
So it must be that specific person, Yua thought, especially since Pakkun mentioned not having smelled her for a while. She did not want to think about what it meant that Pakkun could suddenly smell the girl “all over” Kakashi, but she had a pretty good idea what had happened. This was his business though. He was an adult after all.
“Thank you, Pakkun, I’ll wait for them here.”
– –
It took them two more days to arrive and Yua noticed immediately why that was. The girl was wearing a uniform that clearly identified her as a member of the elite assassin squad of fire country and would have gotten her arrested on sight here in the land of iron. Kakashi must have led them through backroads and thick forests which probably delayed their arrival.
The girl he brought was just about his shoulder height and her hair hung black in a braid over her left shoulder. When her eyes crossed Yua's, she looked away instantly as if she’d been stung by the light in it, but Yua didn’t take that personally. She must be very nervous.
“Mom”, Kakashi breathed out when he got within earshot and the relief in his voice to see her never really stopped to make her heart go lighter. The day he had finally come back to find her, when he was so much smaller and so much lonelier, he had also stood right here in front of her door and called her that way, a mixture of happiness and relief to be home. And Yua had replied then as she replied now: “Glad to see you’ve come home.”
Also not unlike the first time he had arrived, Yua now stretched her arm out to Sayuri and pulled on the sleeve of her uniform. “Quick'', she said and waved with her hand, “Time to go inside before someone sees you.” The girl stumbled past her and Kakashi stabilised her with a steady arm, which made Yua smile in a way that she couldn’t explain.
“I’m Uchiha Sayuri,” the girl said with a bow as soon as the door closed behind them. Yua waved with her hand: “No need to bow to me, child.” So she had been right about the soulmate connection.
Sayuri straightened her spine as Kakashi let out a little laugh: “I told you, you wouldn’t have to be so formal.” She frowned up at him and showed him her tongue. “It’s how I was raised, dumbass”, she said and Yua raised a brow at the insult but Kakashi just kept laughing at it. “Well none of the people that raised you were Samurai…”
“Samurai are even more formal than Uchiha elders,” the girl defended herself and poked finger in Kakashi’s side. Yua didn’t know the Uchiha as a clan other than what Kakashi had told her when he had explained how he had gotten the sharingan eye, but she had to give it to Sayuri, the samurai were a very formal group of people.
Kakashi moved forward and tipped his finger on Sayuri’s nose: “But not my mom. She doesn't care about conventions. You’ll learn soon enough.” There was red on Sayuri’s cheeks when she looked up into Kakashi’s uncovered eye but then she smiled.
Suddenly Yua was transported back into a different time, over twenty years from now. Kakashi had always looked a little like Sakumo, with Yua’s strong facial features also meddled in between. But Yua had never noticed as much as she did right at this moment when she saw his face lit up the way it was. She had seen that look on Sakumo’s face a long time ago and though that seemed so far in the past, she could feel something tugging at her heart now. Even though you moved on didn’t mean you couldn’t miss the tenderness of love once in a while.
Yua took a deep breath to get herself together: “I’m Hatake Yua.” She bowed her head just slightly. “I am, as he has undoubtedly already told you, Kakashi’s mother.”
– –
Sayuri turned in the kimono that was a little too large for her, but it tied well around the waist so it still held as good as it possibly could. “She’s scary, you know,” she said, her eyes running over the soft fabric of the clothing. “She looks like she had her sword ready any moment to slice my braid off.”
“She probably could,” Kakashi said, lazily draped over the futon that they had laid on the floor. Without questioning much Yua had put theirs side by side in Kakashi’s squared tatami room. It was obvious that she had known about the soulmate mark from the way she had reacted to Sayuri’s name, but still, it felt unnerving to have such an easily supportive parent- at least to someone like Sayuri.
It was not like he hadn’t prepared her on the way over. His mother was a stern personality, who was not accepting any shit from anybody. That she had defended him until the village they lived in accepted him, even as an outsider. That she had done the same for his father. That she wasn’t very nice to people who hurt her friends or comrades. “But she’d never hurt you,” he had assured her. “I’ve told her about you.”
That exactly made Sayuri nervous. She did not quite know which details Kakashi had told Yua about. She still didn’t know if he was aware of how Rin died and how her hand fell into that. She had wanted to tell him on their way, but had been nervous that he’d push her away again. Soulmates really were a weird little thing, once you were united with yours, parting almost seemed like losing a limp. She couldn’t imagine it.
“I hope I can properly make her like me, '' Sayuri murmured as she climbed under the covers into Kakashi’s arms who pressed a maskless kiss to her forehead. “Of course she will, don’t be so worried about it all.” It was sweet of him to say, but it only eased her worry a little. She just didn’t know how to deal with parents. Nobody had ever taught her.
Sayuri couldn’t sleep even after midnight had passed. She should have been tired by any means, at least after travelling as long as they had. But her heart kept beating in her ears. So while Kakashi was peacefully sleeping she got up and left the tatami room for the door. Now that she was in a kimono, surely she could stay outside a little longer.
To her surprise Yua was here on the patio, wind curling her hair up as she was looking at the starlight above her. Sayuri considered turning around and just going back to her bed, but Yua saw her immediately. “Can you not sleep?” she asked and Sayuri did a little gasp of surprise.
“I seem to have trouble adjusting to the new environment”, she replied to make it sound a little nicer than “My new partner’s mother makes me anxious”. Yua laughed: “That’s a very sweet way of phrasing it”, as if she had seen right through the excuse. Maybe she had. The woman patted next to her: “Sit, child.” So Sayuri sat.
For a moment they remained quiet then Yua said: “You don’t have to worry about me, I don’t question his choices.” Sayuri felt very found out and just answered with a very mumbled “I’m not-”
“Kakashi has told me about your childhood. He told me, years ago, that your mother died young and your father refused to be a father”, Yui continued and Sayuri laughed and quoted the older woman: “That’s a very nice way of phrasing it.”
But Yua did not laugh, instead she turned to the side and gave Sayuri a thorough look from top to bottom. Sayuri felt the red on her cheeks as the old, wise eyes scanned her like that, but she let it happen. “Has that changed from when you were eleven?” Yua asked and Sayuri averted her eyes.
It was as hard to tell now as it had been just a few days earlier when she told Kakashi. Sayuri said: “He got… worse, somehow.” She didn’t look at Yua at all.
The older woman took her hands in between hers very quickly. “Child”, she said sternly, eyes lit up and focused on Sayuri’s. “You are absolutely safe here. I will make sure you never have to go there again.”
Sayuri suddenly remembered the day she met Hatake Sakumo for the first time. When he had told her to come see him if her father ever mistreated her again. Maybe there was a reason why those two had ended up married. Also, she thought with a smile, Kakashi had his kindness from both of them clearly. “Thank you, Yua-san”, Sayuri said with a little bow.
“It will cause a little arguing”, Yua now said, letting go of Sayuris hands, “These people are hostile to outsiders. You will have to let go of the Uchiha clan-name.”
“Ah, that will be easy. I hate it so much anyway,” Sayuri laughed.
Yua continued: “You also can’t use your sharingan anymore. And seal that assassin uniform away for good. The more you look like one of us, the easier it will get.” She clearly knew what she was talking about. Sayuri nodded and realised that this must be the reason why Kakashi was so secretive about his eye.
“Why would you go to so many lengths to support me? This seems like it brings you a lot of trouble…” Sayuri asked the question that had been on her mind for a while already. She had meant to ask Kakashi about it, but he had been so adamant about his mother helping both of them, that she didn’t find the opportunity too.
Wind went through both of their ponytails. Yua put her head to the side: “Because he looks at you the way his father looked at me and I guess this time I should try to preserve that.” She looked at the younger woman beside her. “Last time, I let it slip through my fingers.”
Why she suddenly felt tears in her eyes Sayuri did not know, but she could hear her voice shaking when she spoke again. “I haven’t told him about the things I did in the past.” She could see Rin’s face in front of her mind's eye. “Things he would hate me for. If he knew, he’d push me away.” She took a deep breath to gather herself. “I’ve been trying to run from him, from his name on my wrist, all my life and yet …”
“Ha, that is how soulmates work apparently,” Yua said with a laugh, “You think you are running away from each other when in truth you are just running towards each other.” She took one of Sayuri’s hands again. “Let me tell you child, that nothing you did is ever unforgivable. Kakashi knows this too. When he arrived here, as elated as he was to find me, he was also angry. “Why didn’t you come get me when your soulmate mark disappeared? When Dad died”, he’d say. I wouldn’t have a good answer. Going to Konoha would mean leaving my life here behind forever, maybe I wasn’t ready for that.”
She pressed the hand she was holding. “Maybe it was my way of grieving. I could not forgive Sakumo for going back to Fire with our child and without me, but when my option was laid out to me, to leave my childhood home behind forever, I also didn’t want to do it. And I missed him, and I was angry at him….” She trailed off and Sayuri figured that Yua must be lost in memories. “Anyway,” the older woman continued eventually,” Kakashi forgave me about that. It wasn’t as if he didn’t understand my reasoning. So while I think for a while he still harboured resentment, in time, he got around to just letting it go.” She looked at Sayuri and winked: “I can guarantee whatever you did he will forgive you.”
Sayuri pressed the hand back. She really wanted to believe in those words. “Thank you”, she mumbled. She wondered how this kind of kindness and support would have been hers all her life if her mother had survived, if she had ever had a mother figure in her life. Well, wondering about the past wouldn’t change anything, what mattered was that there was something here for her now.
Without noticing, she yawned. “Try to go back to sleep, child, you travelled quite some. My son will probably have plans for both of you tomorrow.” Sayuri nodded a little dizzyily. “Be careful, though, sometimes he sleep walks to the kitchen and eats the sweet things he officially doesn’t like until it makes him feel sick.”
“Oh really?” Sayuri laughed. “Can you tell me more about that?”
Yua waved with her hand: “Tomorrow. Promise.”

The Bug Collector: Chapter Eleven - Honeybee
Word Count: 7.5k
Warning(s): Angst.
When Kakashi is appointed as the Sixth Hokage, he reveals that Obito Uchiha did not die in the war and that he plans to offer his former a friend a chance at rehabilitation and redemption. The few people who are aware of this secret project are supportive of the effort. Expect for Reiko Miki.
After her mentor, Shikaku Nara, was killed during the war, Reiko struggled to come to terms with his death. This issue is only made worse when Obito is placed in the only other house on her street. With seemingly everyone against the idea of serving true justice, Reiko decides to take matters into her own hands and make the Uchiha pay for all of the crimes he committed.
However, there may be more grey in the black and white picture she’d painted than she originally anticipated.
Chapter One - Chapter Two - Chapter Three - Chapter Four - Chapter Five - Chapter Six - Chapter Seven - Chapter Eight - Chapter Nine - Chapter Ten - AO3 - Chapter Twelve
“Do you know anything about space?”
Obito asked from his position lying next to her. The greenery around them had regrown to a healthy length since the big chop a few weeks prior. Though, there were still little clumps of yellow, dead, grass scattered around the yard. It made the blanket they were seated on bumpy in some places, but she was mostly comfortable. When she’d arrived for their fourth date, she’d expected the same as the second and third. Cheap takeout for dinner and a movie on the television that they completely ignored in favor of sharing passionate kisses in the dark.
To her surprise, Obito had greeted her in his living room with a bashful smile and a rolled up blanket tucked under his arm. When she’d asked him what he was doing, he’d guided her to the fenced in yard behind his home. In the middle of the grass was another blanket, already prepped with a bottle of wine, two glasses, and a tray of assorted picnic foods. The sun was already setting by the time she’d arrived, but the air stayed pleasantly warm even after the light had gone. After eating, they’d both laid back to stare up at the sky as the sound of crickets filled the air.
The stars twinkled above them against a deep navy backdrop. Living in this little valley meant that even her view of the sky was framed by the tips of trees and the jagged edges of the rocky cliffs surrounding them. Though it didn’t feel like it hindered her sight. Rather, it made her feel secure. Safe to view the heavens from a position on earth that was specifically made to house her. Well. Her and Obito, she supposed.
“Not really… It feels beyond my comprehension. Though I do know some of the constellations. My mentors friend had an interest in astrology.”
Reiko responded, adjusting her shoulders to lay flat against the ground as she folded her arms over her midsection. Obito shuffled a bit as well before letting out a long breath through his nose.
“Do you believe in aliens?”
She asked, turning her head to the side to better look at him. He grimaced and nodded, swallowing harshly.
“Yeah. I do.”
He said, though it felt like a weighted response. Like he knew for a fact that aliens existed, and his opinion of them was not good. She wanted to ask more, but he was shaking his body to dispel the feeling before she could.
“I’ve never paid attention to the constellations. Can you see them right now?”
He questioned, steering clear of the earlier topic. Reiko turned her head back towards the sky, nodding the best she could in this position.
“A few… when is your birthday?”
She returned, and he was quick to answer.
“February 10th.”
Reiko hummed in thought. Interesting.
“You’re an Aquarius then… See, right there?”
She replied, pointing up at a bright star above them. She glanced over in time to see Obito squinting his dark eyes to focus. Then, he nodded as well. She moved her finger in a straight line to the next star in the constellation. Then the next. Until she’d mapped it out for him.
“Aquarius is represented by a man pouring out a jug of water. See, this line is his leg… then, his torso and outstretched arm. The longer segment is the water.”
Reiko explained, moving her finger again to gesture to the different parts. Obito scrunched up his nose a bit, like it was hard for him to see and he didn’t quite get the picture. She chuckled a bit, dropping her arm back to her stomach.
“What does that mean? That I’m an Aquarius?”
He asked, his clothes rustling softly as he wiggled around beside her. Then, she felt his hand grabbing her wrist, tugging gently. Reiko complied, because there was no harm in holding his hand. Obito laced their fingers together and squeezed as she tried to remember something Inoichi had told her over a decade ago.
“Well… Aquarians are intelligent, idealistic, independent and progressive. They’re a bit strange and eccentric. They have issues with authority and hate doing things the ‘traditional’ way.”
Reiko said, lumping a few descriptors together as Obito let out an annoyed huff beside her. She turned her head again to look at him, only to see that he was frowning.
“What’s wrong?”
She questioned, and he shrugged, still looking up at the sky with that displeased expression.
“That’s just… too accurate.”
He responded, drawing a genuine laugh from Reiko. So, he was upset that the stars had pinned him down. Just like Shikaku had been. Her heart tensed and she turned her eyes back towards the stars as well. The nice moment soured in a near instant.
“What’s yours?”
Obito asked, and Reiko sighed as she attempted to lock away the thoughts of Shikaku for the time being.
“Virgo. Practical, logical, judgmental… mean.”
She said, drawing another scoff from her partner. Reiko quirked a brow, but before she could ask him what was wrong this time, Obito was speaking.
“That’s bullshit.”
He replied, spitting out the words like he was legitimately upset. Reiko raised her eyebrows in surprise, her head turning to the side again to look at him. He’d done the same, locking eyes with her to show her his earnest, pissed, expression.
“You’re not mean. Or judgmental. You’re kind and understanding.”
Obito said, almost like a toddler pouting and stamping their foot as they argued against something that they didn’t yet understand. Something that was an undeniable fact, but could not be accurately explained. It took Reiko aback and she could only stare at him for a bit, her eyes wide as he tried to will her into believing him. Eventually, she shook it off and turned her back upwards with a breathy chuckle.
“That’s sweet, but you may not know me as well as you think you do. Besides, there’s no need to get so worked up. Astrology isn’t an exact science or anything.”
Reiko stated, swallowing against the nervous knot in her throat when she was done. Then, Obito was sitting up beside her, turning to lean over her and drop a chaste kiss to her lips. Despite the many, much more vulgar, kisses they’d shared, Reiko felt her cheeks heat up when he pulled away.
“I know you well enough to know that you’re a good person.”
Reiko read over the same paper for the fifth time, trying to focus on the words as intently as possible. But she’d already gone over several stacks of files in the last couple of hours. The lines of text were starting to bleed together and she wasn’t retaining any of it. With a sigh, she lifted her eyes from the paper, glancing at the clock on the far wall… ten o’clock already? She’d been sitting behind this desk for nearly six hours without any movement. The last time she’d risen from the chair was a short restroom break and that realization called the pain in her lower back and neck to the forefront of her mind.
With a sigh, she stood from her seat and stretched her body, joints popping and muscles pulling tight against her skin. There was still a bit left to do, but she could probably knock it out in about three hours. Honestly, she could have stopped a long time ago. All of her current work was up to date and some of it was even done a few weeks in advance. Now, she was just going through old mission logs, transferring the information over to the new forms that had been implemented a few years prior under Lady Tsunade’s reign. There were decades of information that needed to be updated, but no one had ever dared to take on the task. In the last couple weeks, however, Reiko found that she was most comfortable when seated behind her desk. Going home meant having to walk past Obito’s. Walking past Obito’s house meant fighting the urge to cry, yell, or run up to his doorstep in hysterics.
Truthfully she hadn’t been home for a while. A week, at least. She would work on these papers well into the night, after everyone else had left the Hokage Tower for the evening, and then she would shake out an old pillow and blanket Shikaku kept in the office for hard times. She would curl up on the floor behind his desk and get a couple hours of sleep before waking up to wash off in the restrooms on the bottom floor. Then, it was right back to work until she couldn’t hold her eyes open anymore.
Just as she was about to gather her mug and leave the office in search of more coffee and a snack, there was a light knock on her door. It was so late in the evening, she couldn’t imagine anyone would still be here, but perhaps it was just someone on their way out late, coming to tell her goodnight and to remind her not to ‘burn the candle from both ends’. She grabbed her mug anyway and moved to open the door.
“Hey, Rei.”
Kakashi said from the doorway, looking down at her with his hands stuffed in his pockets. After Obito had kicked her out, she’d worried about seeing Kakashi again. Afraid that Obito had told him that she’d been plotting his assassination all along. Then, she would have ended up imprisoned despite never being able to produce results. But when the first week passed without issue, she relaxed a bit. Kakashi hadn’t bothered her much recently, despite the fact that he absolutely knew she was sleeping in her office.
“Hi, Kakashi.”
She returned, nodding down at her coffee mug and then past him down the hall in a sign for him to move out of her doorway. He took an easy step to the side and she exited the office, pulling the door shut behind her.
“Is something wrong?”
Reiko asked as she began to walk down the hall towards a small break room on the first floor. Kakashi moved to walk beside her, matching her stride. The Hokage Tower was silent at this time of night. The only sound being the squeaking of their sandals against the linoleum.
“No, nothing’s wrong. I just wanted to check on you before I left for the night. How are you doing?”
Kakashi questioned, the tone of his voice causing her to panic a bit internally. He almost sounded remorseful. Or conflicted. Had Obito finally told him about her plan?
“I’m doing well… yourself?”
She replied, keeping her cool despite the fact that her heart was racing. At this point, she shouldn’t care. If she was imprisoned for her attempt on Obito’s life, then so be it. There wasn’t much left for her in the world of the living anyway. Someone else could handle the paperwork. There were no friends that would miss her. The only person she’d really be leaving behind was her mother… But she would visit.
Despite the rationality in all of those observations, she couldn’t fight the urge to remain free. It was imbedded in her DNA. Fight, flight, freeze. Ultimately, being imprisoned was a threat to her life as she currently knew it.
“I’m okay. And are you… sure, you’re doing alright? I’ve noticed that you’ve been sleeping in your office.”
Kakashi said, eeking out the words like he was nervous to ask them. It soothed her worries momentarily, but she was also cognizant of the fact that this could be an attempt to get her to confess to what she’d done. That wasn’t happening. Not a chance in hell.
“I have… but I’ve been working late trying to get all of those old mission reports refiled, so it’s just easier to sleep here than walk all the way home in the dark.”
Reiko explained as they crossed over the threshold into the break room. She flipped the bright overhead light on and made a beeline for the coffee machine. Kakashi was still at her back, and he hummed in response to her answer.
“Right… So, there’s nothing else keeping you from going home then? Just paperwork?”
He questioned, and her shoulders tensed involuntarily. So, Obito had at least told him part of the story.
“I’m not sure what you mean?”
Reiko replied, her attempt at playing dumb failing horribly when Kakashi crossed the break room to lean against the counter next to her. He peered down at her with knowing eyes, but she returned his pitying look with one of doe-eyed confusion.
“Don’t look at me like that. I know better than to think you don’t know what I’m referring to… Obito told me about what happened. About your breakup.”
He said, and Reiko winced a bit, turning back to continue scooping coffee grounds into the paper filter at the top of the machine. Kakashi playing the role of match maker was irritating. She would almost rather he arrest her for the murder attempt.
“Oh. Yeah. It just… didn’t work out.”
Reiko said, hoping that excuse was similar to the one Obito had given him.
“That’s a shame. Honestly, I thought you guys would have been good together… but, things don’t always work out.”
Kakashi said, running through his words like they were afterthoughts. Part of something he heard in a movie once and was just now regurgitating. This could not be the only reason he’d come to talk to her. A tense silence followed afterwards, Reiko letting out a hum of agreement as she pressed the buttons to turn on the coffee maker. It whirred to life, the sound of water boiling and gurgling through the innards of the machine filling the silence between them.
If she thought about it for too long, the memory of Obito’s face in those final moments made her sick. The betrayal and confusion in his expression melting into nothing but apathy and barely concealed rage. The same man who had looked at her as if she’d hung the moon and the stars earlier in the night had told her to get out of his home with the coldest eyes she’d ever seen. In hindsight, she knew that she’d been falling in love with him. Denying it to herself over and over again for the sake of maintaining her beliefs. Her morals. Her dedication to Shikaku. But she was starting to realize that none of those things mattered when it came to love.
Since she’d had time to truly think about it, she’d also come to the realization that Obito had been manipulated into doing what he did. He’d been purposefully led astray by a much older man. The all powerful Madara Uchiha nonetheless… He’d been a child. Lost and hurt and scared. Madara had helped him get back on his feet, only to throw him back into an endless pit of despair and bitterness. He wasn’t absolved of all guilt… but she knew she could never hold hatred in her heart against him for the things he’d done. Not now. Not when she’d almost killed Obito in the name of honoring Shikaku. If she had been in his situation as a child, she would’ve done the exact same thing. There was no moral high ground for her to look down on him from.
She’d thought about returning in the days afterwards. To at least attempt to explain to Obito all of the details. Maybe, if he heard her side of the story, he would understand. Just as she understood his crimes. But there was a part of her that was still afraid to admit her wrong doing. In her mind, her feelings had been justifiable, and if she could justify them, how could she ever hope to apologize?
The coffee maker dinged, pulling her from her thoughts and reminding her of Kakashi’s presence. He was still quiet, so she shook her head a bit to snap herself out of it, reaching forward to refill her mug.
“Reiko… Actually, there is something that I want to talk to you about.”
Ah. Maybe this was it. The Anbu were waiting just outside the room. In a few moments, she would be bound and escorted to one of the cells beneath the Hokage Tower.
“Yes?”
Reiko returned, the knot in her throat swelling. Her hands remained remarkably steady as she poured her cup of coffee.
“I, uh… I understand if things didn’t work out between you and Obito. Some people just aren’t meant to be together. I get it. But… It’s just, Obito’s taking it hard. I don’t know if he ever told you this but you were his first girlfriend. Though, I’m not sure if you two ever labeled it that way…”
Kakashi stumbled over his words and sighed as he spoke. For someone who had approached her so casually about her relationship with Obito several weeks ago, he seemed surprisingly nervous about broaching this topic with her now. Maybe he assumed that Obito had done something wrong and had been the deciding factor in their ‘break-up’. It would make him nervous to think he was advocating for someone who had slighted her.
“I don’t really know what I’m asking here. I just think it might help him if you guys were to… talk it out maybe? He was having a hard time already, trying to re-adjust to being back in the village. And I’m not ignorant to the way some people feel about him. He isn’t either. So, when you showed up and treated him like… well, like he deserved to be here… I think that meant a lot to him. And now… he just sits in front of the TV and watches the same movies, over and over again… I’ve tried talking to him but I think it might mean more coming from you.”
Kakashi finished, rubbing the back of his neck and appearing entirely too bashful for a man who was supposed to be the leader of their village. Her hand was frozen, fingers curled around the handle of the coffee pot as his words rattled around her skull. It hadn’t been easy for her to accept how she felt about Obito. She’d been fighting it for months. However, after that night, it rolled over her in a wave of melancholy and she had no choice but to surrender to it. Though she hadn’t tried to fight against the truth at that point. Maybe it was easier for her to accept reality after the opportunity had passed. That way, she wouldn’t have to act on any of the things she was feeling. She could allow them to fester, undisturbed, and sink further into herself in retaliation. That was a feeling she was familiar with.
“That’s cowardice.”
Yes, it was. Many of the things she’d done concerning Obito were cowardly.
So, when Kakashi told her that Obito was crushed and inconsolable after their break up, it only served to make her stomach twist into knots. Guilt pulled her sternum inwards, collapsing her chest in on itself until she could only draw in a few staggering breaths. It was sickening to think that she’d hurt someone else in such a way. No one had gained anything in the end. Obito was heartbroken. Reiko felt empty and disgusted with herself. Shikaku was still dead.
“I don’t know, Kakashi… We didn’t end on great terms.”
Reiko replied, managing to get the response out before her silence became too indicative of her mental state. She poured the steaming coffee into her mug with a surprisingly steady hand, though the pot did clatter a bit when she returned it to the machine.
“He said the same thing but… I mean, if it’s not too personal, can I ask what happened?”
Kakashi questioned, and it felt like her tongue was swelling in her throat, cutting off her airways. She swallowed to clear the passageway, hoping to just choke on the muscle so she would’t have to navigate this situation any longer.
“It’s personal.”
Reiko managed, grabbing her mug from the counter and turning to leave the break room without so much as a glance in Kakashi’s direction. Despite the fact that she was clearly indicating that she would like to end this conversation, Kakashi followed behind her.
“Okay, I get it… Still, I think you should talk to him. He’s too wound up to approach you himself, but I know it would help… Just think about it, okay?”
Kakashi encouraged from over her shoulder. Reiko sighed, stopping for a moment to glance back at him. She forced a tired smile and nodded.
“Yeah, I’ll think about it.”
She returned before continuing down the hall and back to her office. The only place on the planet that still made sense to her.
—————————————
After spending his entire life beating it back, the guilt poured over him in the form of raging river water. Thrashing and bucking as his body was thrown against jagged rocks and pulled under the current. He could surface just long enough to draw in a gasp of oxygen, but then it was right back into the murky depths. He was torn between keeping his eyes screwed shut, praying for it all to be over soon, and opening his eyes so he could prepare himself for what was coming. But it didn’t seem to matter. There was no hope in fighting the rapids, and his eyes were burning too much for him to force them open.
It had been like this since the war had ended. Every little bit of joy he tried to steal away for himself came back to bite him. After all he had taken and destroyed in the name of his goal, why should he ever get the things he wanted? How could he continue to live this life, mostly free of worldly hardships, when Rin had never known anything other than pain and sorrow? When he had caused so many hardships for countless others?
Reiko seemed to inspire this reaction. He would soar so high when she was around, flying above the clouds weightless and carefree. Then, as soon as she was out of ear shot and eye sight, he plummeted back to the earth like a sack of rocks. Spiraling and spinning until he crashed and sank further than before. He’d become accustomed to the dip in his mood whenever she would leave, but this was an entirely different feeling. It was hard to grasp everything he’d experienced in the last hour, but one word had arisen from the nonsensical string of thoughts in the moments directly after their tryst.
Love. She had shown him love.
He was no stranger to that heady feeling. The very same butterflies used to erupt in his stomach whenever Rin was around. His cheeks would heat up and his head felt like a balloon, floating up and away from his body. However, what Reiko had just bestowed upon him was one of the greatest gifts he’d ever received. In the minutes he’d spent buried inside of her, time seemed to slow down. He was too consumed by the softness of her skin and the sound of her breathy moans to think about anything other than her. When she whispered those tantalizing words in his ear and they both reached their end, it had felt like… like they’d become one. Like he could understand her in ways he never thought possible. Like she could feel everything in his heart. Every twisted emotion and dark thought and she’d still accepted him. Drawn him into her body and writhed against him as if she couldn’t possibly get close enough.
The conflict between the desperate need to feel loved and the panic inducing fear of being known… that was what had sent him spiraling after Reiko had gone upstairs to clean herself.
Before he could truly determine the source, tears were welling in his eyes. He’d managed to pull his boxers back on, but as he seated himself back on the mattress, he felt hollow again. Empty. Guilty. Maybe he did deserve to feel that kind of pleasure and love. However, in the back of his mind, it felt like a betrayal to care for another woman that intensely and to have shared something so magical with her. He’d always thought Rin would be his first. They would grow up together and be each others firsts. She would elicit these wondrous feelings from him and they would live happily ever after.
Logically, he knew he had to quit living in the past. Quit making up these impossible fantasies in his head. But logic didn’t stop the pain. Irrational as it may be, he dropped his head forward and wept, all the while saying a silent prayer.
‘Rin… I’m so sorry. I still love you. There will never be a time where I don’t. But I think… I think I may be in love with someone else. Please forgive me.’
In his heart, he knew that she would accept his apology. In fact, she would probably tell him that he didn’t need to apologize at all. But sending that prayer up to her made his muscles relax a bit. The tears slowed and his breath evened out. When he picked his head back up and rubbed the remaining water from his eyes, he could see Reiko’s shadow extending from the other side of the doorway into the living room. Normally, the idea that Reiko had heard him crying would embarrass him to his very core, but he couldn’t seem to find the strength to be mortified. She’d seen him bare at this point. Seen him so lost in the throes of pleasure that his eyes had rolled into the back of his skull… She would understand. Just like Rin would.
“Rei?”
—————————————
“Rei? Hello? Anyone home?”
Shikamaru asked, snapping his fingers in front of her face to catch her attention. She jerked her head and refocused her eyes on the boy in front of her, nodding to let him know that she was still present.
“Yes. Sorry. Uh, I think… Maybe we could…”
She started to say, scrunching her eyes shut in an attempt to recall what he’d been talking about just a moment prior. Fog filled her head and she grew increasingly irritated with her inability to focus on the task at hand. Maybe sleeping in the office wasn’t such a great idea… She’d kept the same routine for another week after Kakashi’s ‘pep talk’ and all of the unsure hours were starting to catch up to her.
“Maybe we could…? What?”
Shikamaru asked, waving his hand in a motion for her to spit it out. Reiko sighed, her shoulders sagging as she accepted defeat.
“I’m sorry Shika, I wasn’t paying attention. Can you run it by me one more time?”
She admitted, and he sighed as he plopped himself down in the chair across from her. Shikamaru leaned forward, resting his forearms on the table as he tried to force her to focus on him.
“I said that I want to train under you.”
Shikamaru reiterated, and Reiko’s eyes widened as the words finally registered. Oh. Oh. How in the hell had she not listened to him earlier? That was a major step in a direction she wasn’t entirely sure he’d wanted to take up until this point. Shikamaru was every bit as intelligent and cunning as his father, there was no question in that assessment. It was clear that the Jonin Commander position would suit his talents, and she’d often entertained the idea that she was just a placeholder for the young Nara… However, after Asuma’s death and the war, Shikamaru had seemed content in continuing in his duties as a Shinobi. He did was what asked of him, but he was always a victim of his perpetual laziness. He didn’t actively pursue much. So, to have him in her office, requesting to intern under her… it was strange, to say the least.
“Oh. Train… as in… for the position of Jonin Commander?”
Reiko asked, making sure she understood his intentions clearly. Shikamaru nodded, sitting back in his seat once he was content that he had her undivided attention. He crossed his arms over his chest, and a tense expression on his face as his eyes fell shut.
“Yeah. I think that’s what dad would have wanted, ya know?”
He answered, causing Reiko to quirk a brow. Well, to be fair, Shikaku had trained her for the position. Shikamaru’s eyes peeled open and, when he realized what he’d said, he sat straight up and his dark eyes grew wide.
“That’s not to say that dad didn’t want you to do the job! He did! Of course he did! I just mean… Well, you won’t do it forever. So, when the time comes, I want to make sure I’m ready is all.”
Shikamaru clarified, one of his hands coming up to rub the back of his neck as he fretted over the mis-phrasing. Hm. Reiko was not ignorant to the ongoings in the village. She knew that Kakashi’s reign as Hokage was only temporary. He would keep the seat warm until Naruto Uzumaki was old enough to assume the title. When the Hokage changed, so did the upper ranks that supported them. Kakashi had left things mostly as they were when he took over, simply because he couldn’t be bothered to change every thing to suit him. He would much rather pour himself into the pre-made mold than reshape the mold entirely. However, when Naruto took over, he would likely promote his friends and classmates into higher positions. It worked best that way. If he surrounded himself with people he trusted and was comfortable with, his reign would be much smoother.
“When the time comes… You mean once Naruto is named Hokage?”
Reiko asked, and again, the young man’s eyes grew wide. A different woman may see this situation as disrespectful. It could be misconstrued as the younger generation plotting the decline of the current regime. Sneaking around behind the backs of their superiors to put things into place for their inevitable climb to the top. But, surprisingly, Reiko didn’t feel the least bit slighted.
“Yeah, I guess.”
He replied, deflating slightly like he was expecting a scolding. Or at least a clipped tone. Reiko had spent her entire life training for this position. Granted, she would have been prepared to handle it from a logistical perspective in her mid-teens. It only took her this long to assume the title because Shikaku had held it for so long it just didn't make sense for someone else to take over until he was truly ready to throw in the towel. Even when he’d died, he hadn’t been ready.
Regardless, she had stopped coveting the title of Jonin Commander long ago. At some point, her internship had become less about the end goal and more so about her time spent with Shikaku. It’s not that she didn’t want the job… rather, it just didn’t hold the same importance to her now that he was gone.
“Wow. Taking big steps in the self awareness department.”
Hmph. If she had admitted to herself that she loved Obito after everything he’d done, then she could definitely admit that she wasn’t a fan of her job.
“Well… I think that would be a fantastic idea. I just didn’t know you were even remotely interested in the position.”
Reiko replied, folding her hands together on the desk top as she leaned forward a bit. Shikamaru shrugged, rubbing the back of his neck.
“I didn’t think that I was, either. But after dad died… I got to thinking about it. And I think it would be the best use of my talents, I guess.”
He answered, eyes dropping from her face to her hands over and over again as he struggled to look her in the eye during this somewhat emotional moment. Reiko hummed, nodding. She understood. Of course she did. Shikaku’s death seemed to have inspired uncharacteristic things in both of them. Though Shikamaru’s revelation would lead to a long, fulfilling career. Her revelation had only led to heartbreak and sorrow.
Reiko had to make a conscious effort not to go down that rabbit hole again. In the first couple of weeks, work had been enough to overload her mind and prevent her from thinking too heavily about Obito. But the past few days, she couldn’t seem to shake him. Every thought led back to him.
“I understand… more than you’ll ever know.”
Reiko said, a mourning silence falling between them as they both glanced at the empty desk in the room. Her sleeping bag and pillow were tucked under Shikaku’s desk, though Shikamaru didn’t know that. Sleeping on the floor behind it almost felt like she was walling herself off from the outside world. Remaining in an area where she could still imagine his presence. All of his personal effects were still untouched and it worked as a living memorial to a great man… but, in the end, Shikaku’s items were just that. Things. They wouldn’t bring him back and a cup full of pens and paper clips could never hope to incapsulate his memory.
Maybe that area would be best used for something else. Maybe it was time someone else sat behind it.
“Would you like to start next week, then? You’d even have your own desk.”
Reiko added, turning back to look at Shikamaru with a soft smile. He fixed her with a wide eyed stare at the implications, but she didn’t feel strange about the offer at all. This is what Shikaku would have wanted. Them taking pointers and inspiration from his death, rather than what Reiko had been doing by letting her anger and grief consume her. Move forward. Lift up the next generation. Continue to pave the pathway for a better future.
“There ya go.”
After a moment of thought, Shikamaru nodded slowly, a smirk playing at his lips.
“Yeah… Next week sounds good.”
—————————————
Obito was sick. Truly ill in every sense of the word. When Kakashi had come over for their weekly visit after the incident with Reiko, Obito hadn’t even managed to pull himself from bed yet. He’d laid there for a full day, staring at the dried pools of wax on his floor and torturing himself with the lingering scent Reiko had left behind on his sheets. The situation was far more serious than he’d let on, but Obito couldn’t bring himself to tell Kakashi the real reason he and Reiko had ‘broken up’. When his friend had begun asking questions, Obito had simply said that she had, indeed, told him that she didn’t want to see him anymore.
Kakashi had tried his best to be supportive. Telling Obito to go shower and dust himself off. That one break up wouldn’t ruin his life and things would get better little by little, every day. And maybe that would have been the case for a normal break up. One where things ended amicably or where he’d known going into it that the tryst was temporary… but the falling out with Reiko was cataclysmic in nature. It wasn’t a simple dispute over an ex she was too close with. Or an understanding that the expiration date on their relationship had passed them by. It was much more devastating. As Obito sank further into the couch in hopes of becoming one with the fabric, he almost resented Kakashi for lying to him several weeks ago.
Nothing had gotten better.
In fact, it had only gotten worse.
At least, in the beginning, he could still justify being angry at Reiko. Anger didn’t leave him wallowing in bed, too sad to move, or crying into a pillow after being reminded of the gaping hole in his chest. Anger gave him energy. The desire for retaliation pulled him from the sheets for a few days after the incident. He had cleaned himself, pacing his house as he thought up ways to get back at that woman for breaking his fucking heart. For thinking she was even near capable of killing him. She wasn’t even a Shinobi for fuck’s sake! Did she really think so little of him? That he wouldn’t have been able to defend himself from the most mundane, idiotic, attack he’d ever had the displeasure of witnessing? Those thoughts were obsessive for a while. He couldn’t sleep. Couldn’t eat. But every time he moved to leave the house and enact some kind of revenge, he stopped short of the door. His hand would hover over the knob for several, long, minutes, and then he would deflate. Pulling away from the exit with a groan of frustration.
After several days of bearing the burden of this fury with no outlet to focus on, it seemed all of his strength was sapped in a single night. He’d finally managed to sleep through an entire night, only to dream about Reiko. Her smile. The shine in her dark eyes. Her laugh. Her moans and the taste of her skin. When he’d woken up to find that she wasn’t lying next to him, the reality of the situation sank into his bones like freshly poured concrete.
The woman he’d come to love over the course of several weeks had tried to kill him.
She had shown him the most beautiful thing he’d ever experienced in the form of her companionship. She’d wiped stray tears from his cheeks with the pad of her thumbs, only to lean forward and kiss him as if his weakness made him more attractive. He’d told her about his life and watched as she felt every single word, like she had lived through those horrible things with him… And, the entire time, she’d been plotting to kill him.
Obtio’s stomach churned again at that thought. Of course he’d understood the truth from the moment she’d admitted it to him. Someone she loved had died in the war he’d started, so she came to kill him as an act of revenge. In the end, he couldn’t be angry at her when all of these events were his fault. He had been the one to set the chain of dominoes in motion. Seeing her cry like that… down on her knees as she begged him to listen to her. To hear her out because she couldn’t go through with her plan… His throat tightened and his eyes burned at the memory. It was always that image that brought him off of the ledge his fury constructed. He was starting to realize that he could be angry at her for betraying his trust, while also being so disgusted with himself that his anger hardly mattered.
Most of all, though, he just wanted to see her again. It had been a month at this point and he still wasn’t any closer to moving on or forgetting about her. Was it wrong to crave kindness, even if it was fake? Was it wrong for him to want to feel her in his arms again after what she’d done? Would he ever stop asking himself these things? At the very least, he knew he needed ‘closure’ as Kakashi had called it. Though Obito never divulged the whole truth about the circumstances surrounding his break up with Reiko, Kakashi was more right than he realized.
He’d been so hurt and angry and scared when he’d woken up and seen her sobbing like that next to him. Then, the knife from his own kitchen lying next to her lap. He hadn’t even been able to return it to the block in the kitchen, opting to throw it away entirely in an attempt to scrub the night from his memory. Clearly, it hadn’t worked, and now he was one knife short of a full set.
The tape playing on the television clicked off, the player whirring and winding as it returned to its starting point. He’d been staring at the screen for hours, but there was nothing to be gained as he completely tuned out the film in favor of traversing through his inner thoughts. Every day was the same now. He put in a tape just to avoid the crushing silence of his empty home and then he stared at the flashing lights, hoping to burn his retinas past the point of use. Though, it was getting dull. There was no point in doing this anymore. He either needed to drop it and move on, or seek out that all important closure.
The thought of seeing Reiko’s face again didn’t anger him like it did weeks ago. Now, it made his chest ache in a strange way. Really though, he just needed answers. He needed to hear her side of events. Then, maybe, they could bury the hatchet. Or she could finally kill him. At this point, it didn’t matter much to him.
Just as that thought occurred to him, he heard the sound of swearing and items clattering from outside. It flared over the soft sounds of the television as the movie started over from the beginning and he jumped up from the couch in shock. Carefully, he made his way across the dark living room and towards the window. They were still taped over with old newspapers to keep the sunlight out, but he had ripped small peep holes in strategic locations. It wasn’t paranoia that spurred him to do this, too many years in the shadows and caves had genuinely made his eyes sensitive to harsh light. Still, he put his eye against one of the holes in the paper, squinting against the dirty glass as he tried to make out to scene in front of his house.
At the sight, his heart clenched and his chest tightened painfully.
Knelt in the road, cursing to herself and gathering a pile of spilled items from the dirt was Reiko. It was early in the evening, but the sun set quicker in the valley they lived in. It cast her in the shadows of dusk, her brown hair hanging in her face as she attempted to gather what appeared to be several weeks worth of clothes. She blew strands of hair out of her face, huffing as she hurriedly stuffed the clothes back into a large sack. Then, as if she knew someone was watching her, she jerked her head up to look around. Obito pulled away from the window out of instinct, but he was simply left standing and staring at the yellowing, cobbled together, newspaper.
His heart was racing and his hands felt clammy. She didn’t look any different from the last time he’d seen her. Still so beautiful and graceful, despite being knelt on the dirt road outside of his house, clearly agitated. Why was she carrying such a big bag of clothes? Then, he realized that he lived right next door to her, yet he hadn’t seen her in a month. Had she been staying somewhere else? Afraid to come home because she was scared of what he would do to her? Or maybe… because she regretted the things she’d done herself and couldn’t bare to confront him.
Now, more than ever, he wished he had listened to her that night. He wished he could have asked her all of the questions that had been burning in the base of his throat for the last several weeks. If he had just done that then maybe the decision he had to make right now wouldn’t feel so daunting. Closure. Closure. He had to have closure. So he didn’t have to feel like this anymore. So he could stop wondering about what could have been. So he could move on with his life.
Obito gripped the handle on his front door with a sweaty hand, the single thought of indecision being swiftly stomped on by the boot of his desperation. He would ask her now. He would see her again and he wouldn’t have to keep living like this. He just needed to-
The front door whipped open so quick the hinges didn’t even have time to squeal. Her name lodged in the back of his throat, ready to roll across his tongue and past his lips. But it never came. Simply dying and sliding back down into his lungs with a shuddering inhale. Obito opened his front door to find that Reiko was no longer in the road, and when he whipped his head in the direction of her house, her own front door was already latching shut. Sealing him out.

Hatake Kakashi
Kakashi is known for being a pretty cool and aloof kind of guy, but in one of the first few chapters we get this gem.
I'm unsure if this is Anime only or appears in the Manga as well, but either way I love me a dorky man (Seriously, i do. I married a punny man, this is right up my ally)
2) When Kakashi noticed Sasuke freaking out in the Land of Waves arc he takes a moment to assure his student that he'll do everything in his power to protect them, including dying if he has to. It's not a necessary thing to say, but Kakashi understands that his kids have been put on a mission way over their heads and they need support. In this instance, he supports Sasuke with a verbal promise. Later on in the same mission, after Zabuza and Haku's death, he supports Naruto by allowing his student to cling to him (holding onto his pant leg) and by supporting him when he calls Zabuza and Haku 'pretty cool'.
3) Just his general cool attitude towards Gai. Kakashi's never closed off to his friend, but he acts relaxed, and in their first few scenes together he can be seen asking Gai to repeat himself, to which Gai responds by talking about how 'cool' Kakashi is. I love this because up until this point, we've seen Kakashi as hyper-aware and although he's aloof he always seems to know what's going on around him. Then in comes Gai and he can play the 'sorry I wasn't paying attention' Card and I personally love that for him.
4) Teaching Sakura the Qi release technique. I know it's off-screen and only mentioned when she uses it, but I love that Kakashi found a moment to teach Sakura something that he didn't teach either of the boys. It highlights his ability to see potential in his students and to teach them useful things (even off screen) that they can make use of later.
5) How he protects his student. whether it's protecting Sasuke from Orochimaru by placing himself between them, protecting Sakura from enemy shinobi by killing them in one easy hit, or even guarding his friend's students as he does when Kakazu tries to attack Ino-Shika-Cho. I love that Kakashi's 'I will protect my precious people' isn't just words. that he really holds true to that and actually does everything he can to try and protect them. I love that he turns and walks away from Tsunade while she's demanding he go on a mission because he needs to go after Naruto and Sasuke. He needs to protect them. I love that he outright ignores Hiruzen's plan to send a letter to Danzo because he knows Tenzo is in danger, and instead he heads into root without any backup and only a plan to rescue someone he calls a friend. I especially love that through all of this, with him always being protective of others, Kakashi fights back-to-back with Gai and allows Gai to protect him. He won't accept protection from his students as a rule, or even from any of his other comrades that we see, but when he's fighting with Gai it's equal forces of protection/willingness to be protected. It's such a nice balance that I love to see.
6) I love that he recognizes Sai needs someone to reach out to him, and he offers that support and encouragement that Sai really hasn't heard from anyone else. and he does it in such a simple way. By saying 'I believe in you' and allowing Sai to hear that he is trusted. That he's relied on.
7) I adore that after years of being a good soldier and even giving up even more of his time to be a Hokage, Kakashi finally gets to just be a dork. I enjoy that he goes on Vacation with Gai and acts like a child. That he takes part in their usual competitions with the same energy (just shown in a much different way) as Gai, and he gets upset when Gai won't admit that he won their game of ping pong, showing that he really does care about their competitions and that he does like winning.
8) I love that he's gentle, even when he doesn't really have time to be. A great example of this is when he finds the Konoha boys laying asleep on the road (after Sakura knocked them out) and he takes a few moments to put them off to the side where they can be more comfortable and just a bit safer. I love that he apologized to them for not sticking around or helping more because he really did have to go, but he still found time to at least make sure they weren't laying in the middle of the dang road.
9. Kamuing away Diedra’s arm. A small moment but a brilliant way to introduce Kamui into the world. I love how Kakashi thinks in this scenario. ‘I have a problem. How do i solve this problem? I know! I’ll rip off his arm!’ Brilliant, beautiful, perfection.
10. (Book only) ramming his face into Gai’s ass in Kakashi Hidan. This poor man has suffered so much and now he must suffer me laughing his ass off. Also, talking up Gai before he swoops in to rescue him and then getting annoyed when Gai starts talking about how he understands what it’s like to have a ‘genius rival’. He was so done and i want to hug him. Actually most of that book has perfect moments. Both of his books did i NEED MORE
11. (Kakashi retsuden) ‘i’m not going to apologize for hiding who i am’ ya? And you’re gonna troll your little fanboy by sending him a book with your face on it as the big admission that yes, you are in fact the Sixth Hokage he looks up to? I love you you shit.
12: lamenting Redaku not having an Onsen because he just wants to soak in the nice warm water. Let my man rest.
13. Accidentally letting his cloth’s brush against the tent and thus waking up all the shinobi he hasn’t already knocked out, all because he got distracted thinking of a proud Iruka.
14: (anime only) forgetting he’s disguised as Sukea and almost giving himself away because Houki gushed about how cool he thinks Lord Sixth is.
15. Everything about kid Kakashi. Arrogance, brattiness, the full energy of an angry kid who has already lost so much and is trying so hard to protect himself from more hurt (only to fail because he genuinely cares). Man, i just want to give him a hug.
16. His arrogance. It Definitely eases a bit as he gets older, but once in a while that arrogance and confidence really shines through and i love it. Example: when he called 50 jonin rank shinobi ‘fifty nobodies’ because they posed absolutely no threat to him. Or how he confidently told Naruto he hadn’t even used his Mangekyo Sharingan against Kakazu because he didn’t feel the threat was big enough for that (straight shot to Kakazu’s pride if he’d been alive to hear that)
17: (Anime only) how he jumped over his desk to grab Iruka’s hand’s when Iruka’s words helped him realize a solution to his problem. This was a KakaIru’s dream moment and just adorable as all heck!
18: how just… dramatic he can be. Need to make an entrance into the chunin exam’s with Sasuke? A sudden appearance with leaves floating around them should do it! Want the enemy to believe they killed you? Throw your whole damned body into it my man or it’s simply not believable. Like seriously, he did not need to be this dramatic with his ‘death’ in the land of waves arc. It was over the top and i love it.
19: (anime only) cutting lightning specificlly to save Gai. It wasb’t a test of strength or ability. Kakashi saw danger and faced down a lightning bolt to protect Gai. One of his precious people. It’s a really sweet moment of him admitting to himself that he cares about Gai and wants to keep him safe, and it’s bad ass to see him slice lighting with his chidori,
20: stopping Kakazu’s lightning with just his hands to protect Team Ten. Shikamaru, Choji and Ino were surprised by Kakashi’s decision to place himself between them and Kakazu’s attack and who can blame them? Man faced a lightning attack head on and stopped it using only his hands. No jutsu’s, no fancy last second plan. Just his hands. It was awesome.
I love a lot about Kakashi, but these are some of my favorite things. Through all of his faults and mistakes, he really is just trying. He wants to be kind, he wants to help, and he knows he's limited in what he can do but damn it he's still going to do his best.

Hello! I just found this story in fanfiction.net that was similar to your team uzumaki prompt, but really old, like last update was in 2012 and it's probably Dead. But what it shows is a good read:
https://www.fanfiction.net/s/4991314/1/Escape-from-the-Hokage-s-Hat
Basically Naruto prevents sasuke escape and the council wants to make arrangements to avoid Itachi's wrath, one of those who is banish Naruto, unfortunately, Tsunade is in charge and instead of conceding, she decides to demonstrate why Konoha is a dictatariorship and arranges to take Naruto away for recovery while in reality she also is training him.
Is a NaruHina story, and also has really little Kakashi in this, but there's no bashing and the romance is not the main point. All around a really good read with the political maneuvers the Sannin pull.
Hope you and the others who are interested enjoy this!!!
P.S. happy late birthday!!!! 🎉🎉🎉🎊🎊🎆🎇🎈✨✨🎈🎇🎆🎊🎊🎉🎉🎉

Truth or dare...Mizuki and Kiba 🥺
KibaMizu - Truth or Dare
“YOU’VE SLEPT WITH SHIRANUI?!”
Mizuki sighed for the fifth time as she walked out of the Nara compound, having had one too many shots and wanting nothing more than to crawl into bed and clock out for a WEEK. But one screeching Inuzuka had other plans.
She knew the game of Truth or Dare wouldn’t end well as soon as Kankuro had suggested it, but the reckless part of her still went along with the game. It didn’t help that the man in question was present as well, as nearly every jonin in their circle was invited to Nara’s birthday bash, and had smirked when they made eye contact.
“Hey! Mizuki!”
She whipped around and glared at Kiba, not in the mood to hear anything louder than a whisper at this point.
“Yes! Yes, we’ve slept together but it was years ago and I don’t see what the problem is right now.”
Kiba frowned and pouted at her answer, looking like a kicked puppy. It took all of her resolve to not melt at the look, especially with his face dusted with a pinkish blush from drinking.
“Are you seriously going to be jealous of Toothpick, Kiba?”
“I’m not jealous”, he grumbled and stalked over to her, picking her up and throwing her over his shoulder. He marched towards their new apartment, ignoring her protests to be put down.
“At least I get a nice view.” She pinched his butt and watched with satisfaction as he yelped and spanked her hard. Ouch.
“Really though, you’d think I’d still be with the man if there was actually something that clicked. I have a fang kink, remember?”
Kiba snorted at her remark and proceeded to fumble with the locks on their door. “What about Kakashi? I heard he has fangs too.”
“Dude???”
He sniggered and kicked the door close behind them, putting her back down and stretching. “I was kidding. I’m sorry for over-reacting, the thought of him with you just set something off in my head even though I have no right...especially since I’ve slept with-”
“Don’t finish that sentence, Dog boy.”
“Yes ma’am”

Me: Okay, so just hear me out, okay? Tenten, but like, with actual attention. And she gets to use a bunch of cool new weapons. I'm talking axes, staffs, swords, spears, scythes, bombs, you get the picture. Plus she gets a battle sequence where she whips up these crazy combos. And of course Neji would get some love, too. Moments where he just gets to be vulnerable while his team fully accepts and loves the shit out of him. You know what would be fun? Him choosing loyalty to Team Gai over his duty to the clan, even if it's something stupid like he blows off a meeting to visit Suna with them. Bringing him back to life is a given, obviously. And while we're at it, might as well give Lee the appreciation and badass spotlight he deserves because he's more than earned it. Maybe he gets a huge surprise birthday bash thrown for him by all his friends. They shower him with gifts and words of affirmation. He gets specifically recognized for his hard work and bravery by the Hokage. Gai is there. He's probably crying. Oh, how could I forget about Gai? Yes yes, we'll need some of him just being a team dad and gushing about his kids to all the other senseis because he's just that full of love. Kids gawking at him like 'Wow!!! That's him!!!!"' Kakashi would comment about how strong he's gotten since they were kids and-
Kishimoto, sweating against the knife I have to his throat: Can you please let me go? Naruto's been over for like two years now, please just-
