I think part of what is so devasting to me about Boruto is simply the fact that the "villains" are just too strong.

The Naruto ending was very conclusive, meaning that in order for Boruto to have any significant conflict, they needed to reopen the ideas of Kaguya (the final boss). The issue I see with this is that the traditional ninja arts are just no longer relevant. You can't have taijutsu and kenjutsu specialists be successful in this time period because how are they going to do anything against a god? The Boruto universe has been forced into a corner where only high impact jutsus and other flashy techniques are of any use to shinobi. I miss the days of tactical fighting, of two opponents decking it out in a fist fight. This kinda disappeared in the war arc, but I think even more so in Boruto.

I know many people complain that Boruto is just about "aliens" now and many others counter by saying that Naruto wasn't about regular ninjas either, but I think they miss the point. Naruto was about ninja that could use magic. They were enhanced by it, but still often fell back on more fundamental shinobi practices. That doesn't happen in Boruto, they can't do that and it's a major flaw in my eyes.

It just feels like there is a complete lack of sincerity to the world. I think there are ways to have villains be truly bad people, but the Boruto execution is lacking. There is no sense of emotion. Characters don't necessarily need reason to be "evil," but I want some form of expression. Give me madness, give me hostility, given me irritation, give me obsession, give me grief, give me SOMETHING. I don't feel for the characters in any way. They seem hollow and it makes it hard to enjoy reading.

A hand slithered onto Jaune chest as it tried to drag him back into the darkness.

Kaguya: You've been through a lot worse than this...

Jaune screams, got farther and farther away as he was slowly dragged into the darkness.

Kaguya: Why don't you tell me more about this Pyrrha again~

Neo: ...

Boruto: ...you gonna help him?

Neo: 'Not my time yet'

Ruby: Waiting for season 10.

I think what makes kaguya fail as a villain is cause she lacks any defining humanizing qualities, even in comparison to other naruto villains you would label irredeemable like orochimaru, hidan and even danzo, who still had humanizing qualities even if they weren't likable or sympathetic.

orochimaru and his pursuit of immortality is driven by his deep fear of death from being surrounded by it from an early age

Hidan and his justification of violence through religion

Danzo and his disorted idea of what was wrong and right in order to "protect the hidden leaf"

None of these characters were necessarily sympathetic but were still compelling due to the effect there actions had on major characters.

Kaguya on the other hand felt somewhat disconnected to the story, as she isn't given the chance to do much being introduced in the same arc she is taken out.

Concept of the Hatake, as a wolf clan, worshipping Tsukuyomi, the moon god, as their god. Alternatively: it'd be incredibly funny and ironic if you leaned into Kaguya-hime as a moon rabbit, being worshipped by a wolf clan.

I have no specific thoughts (yet) bc I also love the idea of the Hatake not worshipping any one god but instead honoring just the vague spirits of the land (leaning into them as farmers) but like. Where's my "The Hatake worship Kaguya-hime" AU where things get really awkward when it becomes clear she's kind of trying to blow up the world or whatever from her prison in the moon.

Zetsu goes to a young Kakashi or Sakumo or smthn for help with freeing his mother bc the Hatake's have worshipped her for so long, so surely they'd help

Or if you have one of those role swap Kakashi and Obito aus, add a bit of flavor to differentiate between the villain, brainwashed, Akatsuki, Madara-impersonator Obito-- with brainwashed, Akatsuki, Kaguya-hime worshipper Kakashi, helping Zetsu, potentially with full knowledge of the eye of the moon plan bc he genuinely wants to free Kaguya.

In an AU like that, maybe Zetsu would be more open with him in general too, like, they share the same genuine goal, and also potentially the love for Kaguya. So I can see Zetsu maybe opening up to him a lot more than he would if he were fr just a puppet. At the very least, they could commiserate about "poor" Kaguya hime, trapped in the moon.

I just think it'd be interesting
