ALSO (my previous post was getting too long and this is related but still a tangent lol) the good thing about seemingly endless timeloops is that, y'know, a lot of roads get you to the same places, and this gives you endless AU possibilities. Do KYAL recruit Whiteman because in the first few loops he stumbles across the body naturally like Hillinghead, Hasan, and Maplewood, and proceeds to make such a fucking nuisance of himself - Hillinghead and Shahara's tenacity, but with a non-corrupt Inspector to back him up-- that the recordings Mannix does for himself the first fifteen times are all like "You've gotta do something about this guy, everything still works out okay but he's just ANNOYING." I mean, can't prove that's *not* what happens. In the middle loop, does Mannix question whether Hillinghead really has to die, because a live father in law is more love for him, right? So he changes things slightly and now convincing Hillinghead to let him court the man's teenage daughter is uh. Like trying to get a stone wall to move. Hillinghead's not *forbidding* anything he's just very aware that he doesn't have the money or the standing to protect Polly from a man like Harker if things go sour so spend the next three years convincing him that Polly's safe with you and then if POLLY is still interested, then you can marry. The recording from that timeline: this is what my last recording said happened, this is what I changed, next time round change it BACK and make sure you tell yourself that time round that it's better off that the man is dead even if it seems cruel. In at least three loops Henry Ashe punches Julian Harker in the face, you can't prove that he doesn't. One loop absolutely everything seems to be going exactly like the last time except for no discernable reason Whiteman and Esther slip their tail and make it up to Inverness. Now it's just. Panic because who's gonna shoot Polly and Mannix with their gunman playing dad to some kid he's known two minutes, all the way up in bloody Scotland?
So many possibilities to have a play around with....

Why does KYAL still exists at the end of Bodies? Why is Iris in 2023? What is she doing in 2023? Why does KYAL exists in 2023? What happened to Dafoe?

also quite obsessed with karl being as detached from the story as he is. there's nothing that makes him have to be the detective that has to be involved, but he unknowingly dooms himself by agreeing to work with the KYAL cult. every other detective basically deals with elias head on except weissman, who only meets him right before he kills him. like he's right when he says "by my choices" because everything that leads him to being mixed up with the mannix cult is himself. it's the gambling debts and the choice to do the dirty work for an organisation he knows nothing about. he's the only one that doesn't encounter that body doing police work and it's specifically because he's told to cover it up. he gets himself into the mess and eventually fixes it but the fact that esther always dies in the doomed timelines and he's always too late even if he starts wanting to change things ("till this child. esther.") it just makes me very ill
#sorry jane who heard this on her dms but now im posting it to tumblr cause im having a category 5 woman moment. AND ALTERNATIVELY:#i am also EXTREMELY obsessed with how its a time loop and the idea (so sorry tumblr user whose post i have lost and was inspired by)#weissman was just so fucking hard to deal with that they made sure that he was in their pockets. i just like the idea of the loop--#--having like. fixed points that elias would need to ensure the dystopia (body is covered up/the investigation closes/etc) but#how they get there is a slightly slower process and the earliest loops were the messiest/most unpredictable#and what we see in the show itself is like. the most streamlined version over hundreds of loops and attempts#so karl specifically. lonely that he is and determined to survive. AND with a cruel streak against people he doesn't like#kept nearly blowing their operation so they began to incorporate him in it instead#there's also another tragedy in there if /esther/ is what they realise works best against him..#just love and kindness for a girl that weissman comes to see as family and they immediately exploit it after learning during an early loop#im ignoring specific plot points here (polly seemingly panicking when esther shows up at the station) but I DO NOT CARE.#THERE'S ANGST HAPPENING RN. IM CREATING SCENARIOS TO HURT ME#now if i could write coherently this would be written as a fic but im stuck writing too long textposts#karl weissman#bodies 2023#bodies netflix#sorry to the other detectives. weissman in particular is my babygirl who i devote most of my brainpower to#personal

i dont think this is like a mindblowing analysis or anything but elias is a hypocrite. his whole thing is about love. so much that from what we know he named his cult KYAL and their moto is "know you are loved". and yet he mocks hillinghead for refusing to frame henry. "you did it for what... love?" for someone who proclaims to love everyone he cant seem to comprehend self-scarificial love. would he have done that for polly or hayden? somehow i think not

I have a theory I HAVE A BODIES THEORY! And abit of brain storm. Sorry If it makes absolutely no sense im just typing it out.
Spoilers
Elias doesn't exist anymore obviously, though he was the one who brainwashed everyone right before defoes bodies arrived, we've got the mains being brainwashed by elias who are in 2023 which are Iris and barber. And Iris seems to have memory. The timeline was reset JUST before the body was found but not just before everyone had got brainwashed. Even though they couldn't of been brainwashed by someone who never existed, why did Iris remember Shaharas name and the fact she's in 2023. It seems that victims of Elias seem to remember more then they should. For example, the detectives have a slight memory of someone who meant lots to them. Is there a new version of Elias? Has someone taken over because it seems KYAL building and cult has somehow made it into 2023? But then it goes for the throat? Iris was originally in 2053 where the throat is, and the throat seems unavoidable to make considering Defoe majors in physics? But of they did time travel then it would mess things up. So was iris never meant to be in 2053? Even if she was only an infant or toddler in 2023??
So yeah it seems like victims of Elias remember more then they should. Anyway even if it was this the detectives wouldn't need to play a big part anymore so if there was a s2 iris would be the main character, then again I think only shahara and Iris as detectives would play a big part while Alfred and Charles get on with their lives, literally having some sort of memory to who they loved or cared about.
And what if the detectives did remember more there they got closer to eachother, remembering things they shouldn't bc clearly the timeline isn't 100% fixed if everyone has memory's and we've got Iris here knowing IT ALL.

Still thinking about "Diversity Win! The Evil Dictator isn't homophobic" because, like. Mannix *knows* what Hillinghead is going to do when given the choice between his wife and his lover. They're on, what, loop 50? Hasan says? No matter if *Alfred* thinks he's choosing a third secret option in sacrificing himself, but Mannix will have heard his own voice, when he was younger, detailing how his future father in law is going to confess to murdering Defoe, and be killed on Mannix's orders. He knows that when he drugs Hillinghead to weaponise Victorian homophobia and so at that point, he's not doing it to use in an attempt to manoeuvre Hillinghead against Ashe, he's using it to manoeuvre Hillinghead in to the back of a police cab where KYAL can have him silenced. And IDK, I'd like to think that the little speech Mannix gives is trying to reassure himself that he's not a bad person for *checks notes* getting Hillinghead to out himself and then having him strangled ...but there's a whole 'nother option, my guy, it's called "you know how this went down last time, maybe don't stand in the fricking window this loop around."

ok I think my favorite thing abt bodies is the way that the events of the loop are “inevitable” & everyone in the cult including mannix himself use this to rationalize every bad thing they do — it’s all predestined and we can’t change it; we have to keep the loop intact because of our children; if I break the loop I won’t exist; I have to kill the child, but I tell him he is loved — yet, when presented with dilemmas by KYAL/mannix, the detectives ultimately choose active love, and what they think is right, despite the consequences to themselves — just as they each experience “othering” in society, and work within a system that actively fights against them, they choose sacrifice & to fight for what they believe in when given impossible choices... & despite the way those choices are also “inevitable” & essential to the loop they live to maintain, KYAL/mannix have incredible disdain for the detectives and their drive to fight. but in the end the “inevitability” of the loop is broken by that equally-“inevitable” goodness and tenacity, and mannix’s own decision to fight and sacrifice….
#gotta love when themes come together in a story and through lines are well executed#such a low bar to clear and yet.#anyway.#bodies netflix#bodies 2023#bodies

Hey wait a minute. Mrs. Morley fucking bit her tongue in half. She really didn't have to do that. I can excuse the whole "killing yourself and others in service of a cult" thing that the rest of KYAL had going on, but Mrs. Morley FUCKING BIT HER TONGUE IN HALF because she was SO DEVOTED to Elias' cult!!! what the fuck!!!
